Photographers: note the photos, and the stark parallel images of trees versus factory stacks. They make the point of the entire book in dramatic thought-provoking images that make you want to go out and stop every smoke-producer in the world.

The Rapture of the Deep.......2006-09-05

I really appreciated Van Dover's perspective. She gave an intriguing glimpse into an area of our world which is too seldom viewed, and even less reported upon. Though the writing at times was not at the top tier, she has a wealth of knowledge that translates well onto the page. I particularly enjoyed her perspective as a woman, describing what it's like to break into a predominantly masculine field. On the other side, at times greater humility would assist in the quality of the work. Overall Van Dover's passion and enjoyment of her work are thoroughly communicated, and for brief moments I am transported below the surface with her, into a fascinating unknown and alien world.

Fails on all fronts.......2001-12-08

The explication of the science is a failure. The ecology is poorly treated and the implications for evolution are under-addressed.

As a piece of science-journalism it fails to ignite. The author spends too much time dwelling on her own success at becoming the first female pilot of deep-sea vessel, Alvin. She forgets the "gee-whiz factor" which is necessary for a book of this type.

This is the only book I've given away in over 35 years. No strings attached.

a wonderful adventure for oceanography fans.......1999-07-09

In Deep Ocean Journeys, Cindy Lee Van Dover shares her love of the ocean and her fascination with the deep diving exploration that is revealing a truly remarkable dimension of this planet. Van Dover has invested a major part of her life in deep diving ventures and the rigorous laboratory research that increases our intrique with the mysteries of life in territory seemingly alien beyond hope for life forms. This charming book lets us go into the abyss with Cindy Lee, peer out into the darkness illuminated by the research submersible Alvin's lights, and gaze at hot vents pouring out water that would be steam were it not for the intense pressure of the great deep...we see colonies of giant tube worms living without the benefit of photosynthesis and have to open our minds to new possibilities for living organisms. This little book is beautifully illustrated and written with an open and friendly voice. It is a winner to those of us who want to let our imaginations open doors. I love Deep Ocean Journeys and have used it with students. Readers might do well to consider it as a present for young, would be scientists. The oceans offer major opportunities for discovery that should attract those who want to be a part of cutting edge research! Thank you Cindy Lee Van Dover

Very useful for understanding Yang.......2007-06-13

In order to make my own practice of the dynamics more meaningful, I study The Essence and Applications of Taijiquan. But that book has only static pictures of Yang Chengfu performing the dynamics. So I use Fu's book to more thoroughly understand what Yang is trying to teach. This book is very good in this way with multiple diagrams for each dynamic. You could easily learn a better long Yang form with this book alone than you could from many teachers.

Great reference book!.......2007-04-01

I highly recommend this book to serious practitioners. I use it diligently. Even though it's a publicized 'health' version of the Yang style form, the book serves as a repeated reference for years to come.

NOTE - Must be used in conjunction with lessons!

It's a thick read, complex, and detailed, so go at it with the mindset of looking up the posture you're working on, reading up on that posture, and getting maybe one or two things out of the text. Practice for a few months, go back and reread the same posture and you'll pick up a couple more things. Wash, rinse, repeat. This is what makes it an incredible book with great depth.

The negatives of this book are that it could use more photos of in between movements, more footwork diagrams, and definitely application, but there's a companion book by the same author covering that information - The Essence and Applications of Taijiquan

RECOMMENDED - a good guide for the intermediate practitioner.......2007-01-10

This book is a translation of Fu's step-by-step description of the Yang style Tai Chi form as it was taught to him. Each technique is described in detail, along with illustrations and notes for the student. The ONLY problem I have with this book is that instead of presenting the material in a linear fashion as Fu's original, the reader is required to flip back and forth when referring to material already presented (so I docked one star for this cheapness/ laziness). There is also a brief overview of push hands, and what I believe to be a more faithful translation of the Tai Chi Classics - more closely capturing the poetic beauty of the original Chinese.

That's the best book of Yang Style Taijiquan i've ever read. Much better than the others (including the book of Yang Chenfu, and Zhen Manqing and Yang Zhenduo's books). Its incredibily clear and detailed. But that's not a beginner's book, its for those advanced students who already knows the traditional yang long form.

Pretty much what you are looking for in a Yang family style book. It will not teach you Taijiquan, find a teacher for that. It will help you look upon what you are doing better and with a wider eye. It is very interesting, and if you are asking questions about the forms and stuff you are learning, this will answer them.

A definite must for any Yang family Taijiquan lookers ;) Very nice, Very much worth the money, yet it should be worth more, in my opinion.

This is the perfect book for people who are trying to achieve some semblance of fluency in Spanish who have not had the opportunity of living in-country for any substantial period of time. I'm so grateful for this book, the author is to be applauded for producing one of the most useful books ever written on learning Spanish. A MUST HAVE for every student of Spanish. PLEASE do yourself the favor of owning this book.

This book is AWESOME! It's a must have for all who are determined to get past the basics and really start talking like a native Spanish speaker. I recommend it to all of my friends who head overseas to Spanish speaking countries.

Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish.......2007-08-27

This is a great book! I have studied Spanish for 10 years and didn't think there was anything I could get out of a book for "beginners". My friend had the book with her when we went to Guatemala to study Spanish and I started reading it on the plane because I had nothing else left to read. I read the book from cover to cover and enjoyed every page. The author does a great job of explaining false cognates; it made me laugh out loud at the stupid things I have said in the past, and was embarrased by some vulgar things I've said and not realized it. I recommend this book for Spanish students of all levels.

Great insight on concepts underlying the language and common mistakes English speakers make (Ser/Estar, Traer/Llevar). I came to Argentina to learn Spanish and I've been carrying this book around with me everywhere - if I can only take a few books with me when I go out, I take this one and my guide book and leave the dictionary/verb book at home. Best book I bought for this trip!!!!

Going Beyond Classroom Spanish.......2007-06-03

In a change of pace from most foreign language instructional texts, this book was written not by an academic but by a native English speaker who at the time of publication had lived and worked in Mexico for 10 years and whose wife (I am guessing from the acknowledgments) is Mexican. This is a "Been there, done that, don't make the same mistakes as I did" kind of book.

The book is written in a straightforward, conversational style that is often as amusing as it is educational. The book will help you in your quest for fluency (but of course, you won't become fluent from reading the book any more than you could learn to ride a bicycle from reading about it).

Perhaps I can save you some time in reading the reviews by summing them up. Almost everyone loves this book. Most people wish the book had an index (and you will too). Most like the fact that the book has a chapter on vulgarities (if only to know what to avoid saying) while a handful flinch at seeing the topic broached in the book. Everyone agrees that this is no stuffy textbook.

This book will suit a wide range of learners, from those just beyond beginner Spanish to those who are nearly fluent. As you progress in learning the language, you will continue to find things of value in the book.

OK, so the book is great, you could learn a lot, but is it right for you? It is if you know the basics of the language and want to learn to speak more colloquially. If you need to know how to conjugate verbs, then you're still a beginnner, not ready to break out. If you're looking for a book to help you pass the next quiz in your Spanish class, this is probably not for you. But if you are ready to converse with native Spanish speakers, this could be your passport to travel out of the classroom and into the real world.
