Book Description
Why does a gifted, world-savvy New Yorker pass up lucrative career opportunities and move to a quiet salt-marsh farm in coastal Virginia in mid-life? What kind of welcome will he and his wife encounter and how do they adjust? And what is the texture and meaning of such a life and what lessons does it teach?
Headstones in their front yard provided some local history; trashpits and outbuildings gave up revelatory objects; they learned about imprinting, marshes, mummichogs, black rail, and much else. They learned about a subsistence lifestyle built on food gathered from the road and the use of local plants and animals. They learned from the diverse group of visitors who came every year. But throughout, Reiger is most drawn to the seminal questions of land use; while he offers a full and rich portrait of a coastal farm and way of life, he finds in this life important and telling implications for our understanding of how we might live, even in the late twentieth century - and he offers some unsettling choices.
Heron Hill Chronicle is a book for all those who think deeply about stewardship and our relationship to the physical world, by a man whose books and articles have underpinned much of the momentum - and controversy - in the modern conservation movement.

Book Description
This is the story of a dedicated group that goes to Antarctica to study the Weddell seal, the only mammal on earth able to survive year-round in the most extreme Antarctic temperatures.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging book on Antarctic research and on the Weddell seal .......2007-01-14
_The Hunter's Breath_ by Terrie M. Williams is an engaging account of six field seasons the author and seven colleague spent studying the Weddell seal of the Antarctic, where they spent 10 weeks at a time in a camp on the sea ice of McMurdo Sound, off the western coast of Ross Island, situated near openings in the ice where seals could haul out and sun themselves (and in particular pregnant seals could give birth, and raise their pups).
For years scientists had been frustrated in studying the Weddell seal, in particular observing how they feed and behave beneath the ice. The seals operated under many meters of ice, in very deep and very cold waters that were inaccessible to human divers and even submersible robotic probes. In 1997 miniaturized video technology finally caught up with the dreams of Dr. Williams and other researchers. Williams and her colleagues invented a device called a VDAP or Video Data Acquisition Platform, a waterproof device able to withstand tremendous pressure that could house a Sony 8mm video camera connected to a microcomputer. Also connected to the computer were an array of sensors, including devices to measure dive depth, swimming speed, compass bearings, heart rate, water temperature, a hydrophone to record sounds heard and emitted by the seal (seals are very vocal underwater), and a tiny acceleratometer mounted near the seal's tail to record the swing of every flipper stroke. Attached to the seal on a neoprene pad, the devices performed brilliantly.
The device invented, the team selected with great care a suitable study area and camp site. They wanted to find an area containing cracks large enough to allow the seals to breathe and haul out but not so thin or fractured as to be unable to support the weight of the camp.
The team went to great efforts to counter the various dangers posed by Antarctic research, notably frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration, and the sometimes fierce weather. They contended with temperatures as low as -70 degrees Fahrenheit and hurricane-force blizzards called herbies, monstrous storms with driving grit-like ice blown in from the continent in winds between 60 and 75 miles per hour. After three back-to-back herbies and then an actual snowfall the camp site had so much snow that the ice started to bend and the camp started to sink; quick work was required to save the facility.
Their efforts were well worth it, as they accumulated many dozens of hours of footage of seals beneath the ice, mountains of data, and enough results for a slew of scientific papers. You can see some video stills (along with many of the test subject seals, such Ally McSeal, their first test subject seal, Godzilla, the only male they used, and Ms. Zodiac, a lazy seal that spent so much time on the ice sunning herself that they eventually removed her equipment) in beautiful photographs in the book.
Although the trials and tribulations of the researchers were interesting the seals were the stars of the book. A mild-mannered species of phocid seal, Weddell seals are the only year-around mammalian resident on the permanent ice shelf in Antarctica. They survive colder temperatures, dive deeper, and live further south than Antarctica's three other seal species (Ross, Leopard, and crabeater). They are usually nine feet or more in length and average about three and a half feet in width in the middle. Colors range from bluish-black to soft gray and they have whitish spots that are particularly prominent on their upturned bellies when they sun themselves (originally they were called sea leopards). They were first mentioned by Captain James Weddell in a book recounting his Antarctic explorations from 1822-1824 and formally scientifically described a few years later. Though apparently not seriously hunted by sealers, some were killed by Antarctic explorers to provide blubber to burn for heat and to melt snow and ice for drinking water (explorers as a result often appeared dirty in photographs thanks to the oily soot of Weddell blubber) and to feed sled dogs.
Weddell seals are champion divers; only sperm whales and elephant seals can perform as well or better. She compared the dives of these seals to a person running a 10K race on a single breath of air. They can travel up to four miles under solid ice on one breath, can stay submerged up to 82 minutes (a typical dive is 20 minutes), and dive to depths of 1,312 feet.
The seals have huge eyes to enable them to see in the depths, eyes two and a half times the size of a human's, almost the size of a tennis ball. This, along with their keen hearing and whiskers enable to them be excellent hunters of giant Antarctic cod, schools of flittering Antarctic silverfish, and fish dubbed "borks" (_Pagothenia borchgrevinki_), which live just beneath the ice in 27 degree Fahrenheit water.
Every year the seals make an annual trek under miles of solid sea ice to ice cracks in McMurdo Sound to find mates and raise pups, as cracks always open in the ice in certain areas thanks to tidal stresses and ocean currents. Simply getting there is a tremendous feat, requiring unerring navigation and careful calculations of how far they can get on a breath of air; to make a mistake would mean drowning. They make use of every single hole, weak spot, or air pocket they can find to get a breath along the way, covering a distance of 80 miles from the open sea to their final destination (30 miles more than normal thanks to the giant iceberg B-15, 170 mile long and 1000 feet thick iceberg that completely disrupted the annual cycle of sea ice formation, breakup, and dispersal). In addition, their anatomy is adapted to enlarging even the smallest hole in the ice; their large, reinforced canine teeth stick out from their skulls, giving them a bucktooth-appearance but enabling the seals to scrape ice from the sides of holes in a behavior termed reaming.
Hot read for cold subject.......2004-04-16
Dr. Terrie Williams has written an enchanting book about her research and her enthusiasm for the natural world---a world few of us have the chance to experience. The book blends the rigor of her scientific approach with a fine-tuned talent for story telling. If this book were an eye into the harsh world of the Antarctic it would have a twinkle in it.
Book Description
For thirty years Bob Scott's Lacrosse has been the ultimate guide to the "fastest game on two feet," explaining the men's game at its highest level and promoting the Johns Hopkins philosophy, which has become synonymous with lacrosse excellence.
In this long-awaited updated edition, Coach Dave Pietramala, whose Blue Jays won the 2007 and 2005 NCAA men's lacrosse championships, and Neil Grauer, a Hopkins graduate and veteran writer on lacrosse, among other subjects, have reworked every chapter, modernizing sections on rules, equipment, preparation, and tactics. They revisit topics such as drills and skills for specific positions, game strategy, clearing tactics, and the history of the game itself -- including a section on the Johns Hopkins contributions to lacrosse. New diagrams and images help to clarify concepts and instructions in the text. Action and instructional photos by Hopkins photographer James Van Rensselaer capture some of the drama from the 2005 championship year and accompany the teaching chapters.
Like the Bob Scott book on which it builds, this edition will soon become familiar to every serious student of the sport.

Doing Justice to a Great Book.......2006-10-31
David Pietramala and Neil Grauer have managed to take a classic and update it without sacrificing the integrity, spirit, and purpose of the first edition by Bob Scott. This Second Edition is an absolute must read for any lacrosse coach, player, and fan. Pietramala has done a masterful job of giving the reader insight into the modern game and his own personal views on the sport and the players, much as did Bob Scott before him. Neil Grauer has performed a flawless job in fine tuning the syntax and overall style to make it a very enjoyable read while remaining instructional. Truly the best contemporary book on the sport of Lacrosse. It is a rare and wonderful glimpse into the mind of a great player/coach, and the legacy that is Johns Hopkins Lacrosse.

Book Description
A delightful excursion through the Yiddish language, the culture it defines and serves, and the fine art of complaint
Throughout history, Jews around the world have had plenty of reasons to lament. And for a thousand years, they've had the perfect language for it. Rich in color, expressiveness, and complexity, Yiddish has proven incredibly useful and durable. Its wonderful phrases and idioms impeccably reflect the mind-set that has enabled the Jews of Europe to survive a millennium of unrelenting persecution . . . and enables them to kvetch about it!
Michael Wex—professor, scholar, translator, novelist, and performer—takes a serious yet unceasingly fun and funny look at this remarkable kvetch-full tongue that has both shaped and has been shaped by those who speak it. Featuring chapters on curse words, food, sex, and even death, he allows his lively wit and scholarship to roam freely from Sholem Aleichem to Chaucer to Elvis.
Perhaps only a khokhem be-layle (a fool, literally a "sage at night," when there's no one around to see) would care to pass up this endearing and enriching treasure trove of linguistics, sociology, history, and folklore—an intriguing appreciation of a unique and enduring language and an equally fascinating culture.
Customer Reviews:
It's like old times.......2007-10-03
Reading has been limited so far, but even in small bits it's enjoyable and memorable.
Born to Kvetch by Wex.......2007-10-01
Kvetch is the art of complaining. The book is written in Yiddish rather
than standard German. The author explains how Jews take their Yiddish
with them into Slavic countries. Acceptance of Talmudic authority
distinguishes Jews from non-Jews. The Fasting of the Firstborn is
described on the eve of Passover in gratitude for G-d having spared
them.
Kosher foods are described in detail. These foods are considered fit,
proper or right. i.e. fish with fins and scales; all birds not forbidden
in the Talmud; mammals with clover hooves that chew the cud or eat
noisily with their mouths open.
Luckily, the volume contains an extensive glossary for the readership.
The acquisition would be excellent for both Jews and non-Jews alike.
In the Ground, Baking Bagels.......2007-09-02
I am not Jewish, but I grew up in Jewish homes and am guilty of being a Jew wannabe, if there is such a thing.
Not everyone seems to have loved this book, but after Wex's explanation of Talmudic scholarship, I would have expected no less. This book is scholarly, witty, insightful and revealing. The style is a little odd, in that a series of cultural insights is followed by a page of definitions; that's the only reason I withhold the last star. That said, he takes us in the darkest and earthiest origins of the Yiddish language and how it reflects the restless and oppressed culture that formed it.
One of my favorites is the expression that translates to: "I'm lying in the ground, baking bagels" given in response to the question "how's business?"
If you're lying in the ground baking bagels, you're obviously dead, it's hot, you're working instead of resting, you're dead and there's no one to even sell the bagels to.....
You get it.
kvetch.......2007-08-01
very funny. very informative. maybe a little too much information but the first 50 pages are great.
Oy a Broch, Oy veys meer, Oy Gevalt...running out of Oys!.......2007-07-28
Funny book, interesting informative. I like the style, but the best is, it's funny. (Not as funny as the memoir I also bought, entitled : "My Parents Went Through the Holocaust and All I got was this Lousy t-Shirt", which made me laugh, and cry hysterically, people thought I was having a nervous breakdown. Funny is how we survive the pain that would otherwise kill us!
Michael Wex should read Hanala's book, especially the glossary called "JEWBONICS", which is something like he has in this book. They should get together, is he married?
BetteMy Parents Went Through the Holocaust and All I Got Was This Lousy Tshirt
Book Description
As the main spoken language of the Jews for more than a thousand years, Yiddish has had plenty to lament, plenty to conceal. Its phrases and expressions paint a comprehensive picture of the mind-set that enabled the Jews of Europe to survive persecution: they never stopped kvetching about God, gentiles, children, and everything else.
In Born to Kvetch, Michael Wex looks at the ingredients that went into this buffet of disenchantment and examines how they were mixed together to produce an almost limitless supply of striking idioms and withering curses. Born to Kvetch includes a wealth of material that's never appeared in English before.
This is no bobe mayse (cock-and-bull story) from a khokhem be-layle (idiot, literally a "sage at night" when no one's looking), but a serious yet fun and funny look at a language. From tukhes to goy, meshugener to kvetch, Yiddish words have permeated and transformed English as well. Through the fascinating history of this kvetch-full tongue, Michael Wex gives us a moving and inspiring portrait of a people, and a language, in exile.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to listen.......2007-10-11
I came here just to say what another reviewer just said, about the last sentence in each word is stretched out. It was not so much the accent, as the way the last words is pronounced, that makes this recording painful to listen to for more then a short time. The author also speaks very quickly giving the mind very little time to digest what he just said, before he jumps ahead to another topic.
I got the CD from the library, but it should have been sold with a text copy, so one can stop the recording, and look at the text for clarification.
The whole book is read in a whine, which can be entertaining during the times when he is telling a joke, but for the majority of the book he is discussing complex material about Yiddish. If he varied his voice, and used the whiny voice when it was appropriate to his context the CD would have been much more enjoyable. I also had to give up listening to it, like the reader before.
There are some things on the first CD that are laugh out loud funny in regard to Jesus being described as something that would not fly, and there are a large number of jokes and humorous stories to keep one entertained.
If you are a serious student of Yiddish you may be able to over look the readers voice, but this is not for the casual reader who is just interested in the topic.
Great book - but reading is hard to bear.......2007-07-12
Like most previous reviewers, I loved this book. I did want to mention that the audio version, narrated by the author, is problematic. On the positive front, the author pronounces Yiddish correctly! The problem is in how he pronounces English. He has a very odd way of speaking, with the last word of each sentence articulated very slowly (str-e-e-e-etched out) and about three notes lower than every other word in the sentence. Every sentence ends with a melodic downturn. I found it quite maddening and really had trouble enjoying the book because of it. You may want to be careful if you plan to buy the audio book because his diction is really rather odd.
very well written.......2007-01-12
this is a scholarly, as well as entertaining, book. I always say that if I'm not complaining, check my pulse. Well now I know why.
You'll laugh, and most importantly, you'll gain understanding.
Even my husband the shaygitz enjoyed it.
So, what's not to like?.......2007-01-01
First of all full disclosure, possible conflict of interest: I know Michael Wex and think he is a genius. I would buy anything he writes, records, I don't care. His shopping lists are probably more exciting than half of the stuff in print today. So, I don't pretend to be neutral.
Recently I spent four days listening to him lecture at the annual Klezkamp get together. I couldn't stop laughing. My sister sat next to me. She was laughing so hard I thought she might need emergency medical care.
The material is potentially beyond dull. Wex's genius is that he makes it dance and makes me beg for more. Granted, I am a Yiddishist and love the language and culture. Also, I come from a similar background having sat in a yeshiva (rabbinical seminary) for several years, so I identify with much of what he discusses. However, as the old commercial for Levy's rye bread went, "You don't have to be Jewish to love Levy's." Anyone with the least interest in European Jewish culture will find this work to be a gold mine.
Why? Because what he says ( writes in his book) is, as far as I know, totally original. There is so much sentimental nonsense written about Yiddish and European Jewry. This book totally strips that away. Here you get the real, unvarnished thing.
Some people complain about his voice. For me, it is the perfect voice for this book. It is the quintessential Eastern European Jewish voice with a beautiful Canadian undertone. The tone, the flow, the candence are all classic kvetch with a generous contribution from Leonard Cohen. I grew up with many people who spoke this way. I find it totally wonderful that the publisher would have Michael read his own work; it is a stroke of genius. I listened to the entire set in my car. At times I laughed so hard I was afraid the police would pull me over. " Your honor, I was overcome with an eruptive kvetch. What can I say?"
Now I'm listening to it again. And then I'll probably do it again, and again.....
My Turn to Kvetch.......2006-06-30
Publisher's Weekly has it right. I found the author's voice annoying almost to the point to not being able to listen. But I stuck with it because the book is full of valuable information. And then just when I thought I couldn't stand it any more, he came up with a zinger that I found hilarious. So, my advice is if you can ignore or get used to the whiney voice, try to listen for the content and humor.

Book Description
In these stories, five different kids take us five different places. For Zorana, it is a trip to Pakistan and a ride on a camel; for Raj Dhillon, it's a night alone learning wilderness survival; for Amit, it's a trip to McDoanld's with his Bengali-born grandmother; for Jaya, it's on stage for a performance of Indian classical dancing even after a classmate has tried to wreck her costume; and for Shanaz, it's a visit to an understanding neighbour who helps her see that there are beautiful parts to her Muslim heritage and she must learn to share them with others.
The kids in these stories do the ordinary and the not so ordianry and they are always interesting to read about. In an amusing and entertaining manner, they cope with the challenge of growing up Canadian and South Asian at the same time.
