Book Description
Many international forus have identified the need for comprehensive, transparent, scientific methods for the pre-release testing and post-release monitoring of transgenic plants to ensure their environmental safety and sustainable use. There is also wide recognition that the regulatory and scientific capacity for conducting assessments needs to be strengthened worldwide. In response to these requirements, a GMO Guidelines Project was established under the aegis of the International Organization for Biological Control, to develop biosafety testing guidelines for transgenic plants. This book is one output of this project, and focuses on transgenic maize in Kenya. Such maize includes genes transferred from the bacterium bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which code for proteins which are toxic to some insects. The book addresses both environmental and agricultural impacts, but does not evaluate human health impacts or ethical implications. It draws out some general risk assessment guidelines, but demonstrates the need for case-by-case analysis.

Are Dreams a Reality?.......2000-04-05
Simply remarkable that these people can think up such outstanding ideas. If the ideas of these individuals are possible, then what are we waiting for? The book brings into account almost every consevable aspect and scenerio that a manned mission to Mars would encounter for. If only I had a few billion, a rocket, some plasma and twelve months to spare. I would be there, on Mars. This books is exceptional if you plan on working for a space organization and will be working on this mission.

Book Description
In the tradition of Americaâs strong pioneer women, Rebecca Lawton was one of the first women river guides in the West. For millions of Americans and foreign visitors who have navigated Americaâs great rivers by raft or boat - and for those who wish they could - this book will help them understand rivers and their impact on the human emotional landscape in a deeper sense. It offers such seekers, not only the thrill rides and vacation destinations of our rivers, but also their rich ecosystems and spiritual wellsprings. As Rebecca Lawton says, "To those who come to know them well, rivers are home..It was the river that taught me instinctive responses, in an unparalleled mentorship that led me throughout the American West every day for more than a decade. Being on the river every day taught me to read water - to psyche out where rocks hid in riffles, find safe passage in inscrutable rapids, and keep moving in flatwater sections." Now, years later, she offers "Reading Water" and the countless lessons she learned from interpreting rivers and currents, living in the river community, and becoming part of a boaterâs subculture.
Customer Reviews:
Reading Water is a learning *and* feeling experience.......2006-12-15
This lovely book seems simple enough on the surface (the memoirs of a woman river rafting guide), but, like water itself, there's much more going on beneath the surface. Reading Water is part of the Capital Discoveries Book Series from Capital Books, chosen for their focus on "journeys of self-discovery, transformation, inner awareness, and recovery." This book is a perfect fit for that series.
Lawton weaves many threads into each essay, much like the interwoven currents of the braided rivers she describes in one essay. Some threads are past, present, and further past; others are experience, observation, and research. These threads feel somewhat unrelated until the questions gradually flow over the reader like a gentle sprinkle as opposed to a downpour of forced epiphany.
Her writing style is beautiful and poetic (with the minor exception of an undue fondness for sentence fragments). Her style takes a few pages to get used to, but then it becomes hypnotic. To pose an obvious metaphor, her phrasing pulls the readers along with the sureness and variety of a peaceful river with occasional rapids.
Lawton's greatest strength as a writer is how she combines a scholar's depth of knowledge with a romantic's depth of feeling. She does a great job of interlacing fact and experience. The curious patterns in the lives of salmon might be discussed objectively in one passage, followed closely by the delight of feasting on their flesh in the next. Turning the pages of Reading Water, like reading the best of memoirs, is a learning *and* feeling experience.
As a memoir or as an investigation of the power of moving water to affect human beings, Reading Water is strongly recommended.
Reading Life.......2005-05-09
"reading water" is the river runner's term for seeing things below the surface, things that might leave only a subtle sign on the surface but may be crucial to your survival. Lawton is a trustworthy guide to the subtle signs--signs of time and geological forces and biological creativity and poetic wonders and human truths--that are easily missed but which make life far more wonder-ful. This is a gem of literary nature writing, with a keen poetic eye, but unlike much of the genre, in which writers may have spent too many years in the classroom and then tried to impose too many abstractions or too many other writer's styles onto nature, Lawton's classroom has been the roaringly real and deep and raw and beautiful nature of the Grand Canyon and other wilderness rivers, where river guides must face real matters of life and death and meaning, and she has allowed it to speak to her directly and meaningfully.
as captivating as a lovely river.......2003-06-25
This collection of essays, in which Rebecca Lawton recounts adventures she's had in her many years as a boatman on Western rivers, is lovely. Though her descriptions of nature are not particularly lush, they capture memorable scenes with a brief, snapshot effect that leaves detailed images in the reader's mind. She fleshes out her descriptions with scientific and geologic facts--her writing is not burdened by science, but rather enlivened by it.
Lawton tells of how she nearly drowned a friend of hers with her own hubris; how she learned to get out of swift eddies; and how she became a boatman in the first place, despite the bias against females in that profession.
She also talks about her failed marriage, her mother's death from cancer, and a faithless lover. She draws life lessons from the characteristics of rivers, and although a few of the lessons seem too pat, or contrived to fit the river motif, many of them seem right on the money.
And always Lawson's writing has a sincere, honest tone, as if she is not trying to make herself look good so much as pondering what she has learned, from life and the river.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about lives they will never live, or who values the wisdom others have worked hard to attain.
Wonderful Essays about Nature.......2002-12-28
Rebecca Lawton's collection of essays is lovely. She describes her rafting trips, the geology of the rivers she loves so much and draws comparisons to how rivers are like life. I thoroughly enjoyed the tales of her adventures and learned a lot about life by reading "Reading Water."

Customer Reviews:
She is the best!!.......2007-04-03
I am not a skater but I am a great fan of Katarina Witt since my childhood..I have grown up with watching her skating programmes and when I was a little girl I was wearing my rollerblades at home and I was Katarina Witt:)collecting all the flowers -that my mum, grandfather, and other family members that I made them throw me flowers:))-but due to the lack of skating arenas I have never been able to start to skate seriously although I was very talented and willing but I always admired Katarina Witt. This book is really good for me to observe the mentality of the East German approach for sport and emposing being ambitious and tough to their sporters.I have read some comments regarding this book before ,some people say this book will not be a good example for young skaters in mean of nutrition but I want to say that in these years we were not as conscious as today regarding nutrition.Remember we were still watching the Cigarette Advertisements on TV.So the nutrition mentality has changed a lot in all over the world and Katarina just told her working conditions frankly .She did not give this as an example to be copied of..Besides today's teenagers and their trainers are so conscious that they will only take the parts that will be helpful to them from this book they are aware of what's good or what's bad..
On this book I reccomend to the readers that when you read for example Olympics part from the book ,it will be more fun to read the Olympic parts and after to watch Katarina's that show on youtube ..
Thanks a lot to AMAZON for providing this book !!

Mildly Intriguing.......2007-01-16
Throughout the 1980s and early '90s, East German Katarina Witt dominated the world of ladies' skating. In her autobiography, Witt describes what skating has meant to her, as she details a coming-of-age story being "told" to a young up-and-coming skater, Jasmine.
The book is a fast read, and while it is mildly interesting, it is also very repetitive. Katarina skates past her childhood in the GDR, briefly mentioning her parents, and glosses over the competitions she has had in her life as well. There is virtually nothing about her Olympic bids in Sarajevo, Calgary, and Lillehammer, and little is mentioned of her famous rivalry with American Debi Thomas. Instead, the book focuses on advice Witt has for young skaters - namely, stay true to your dreams and don't give up.
When compared with what is perhaps skating's most famous memoir, "My Sergei" by Katia Gordeeva, this book falls far short. There is virtually no emotion, and the character Katarina is supposedly telling the story to may or may not exist (it's not made clear whether she is real or not). Little insight is offered into the world of skating, either at the amateur level or professional (Katarina doesn't talk about her years on Stars on Ice at all).
Overall, this book is decent, but by no means great. It is emotionless, and mildly intriguing, if more for its outrageous title than anything else. Looking for a great skating book? Try "My Sergei" instead.
Where's Katarina's involvement with the Stasi?.......2006-09-05
I wonder why Katarina stirs clear about her real life and her close involvement with the Stasi, and how it ruined and destroyed people's lives, it would at least have made a more interesting read than this dull book.
Ho hum, it has been said that Ms. Witt was never a very naturally gifted figure skater, that even her wonderfully choreographed programs were never easy for her to do.
It's also rather odd that for such an unrepentant and strident communist to take advantage of all the opportunities western life has given her, but she doesn't seem in the least bit grateful. Everything is about her, her, her. Definitely NOT a good role model for young girls or women.
The Crystal Charm of Katarina Witt.......2006-02-13
Tear your eyes away from the winter spectacle of the Turin Olympics and treat yourself to multiply talented skating superstar Katarine Witt's most intimate memories. She tells them all to a young girl whose name she kindly changes to "Jasmine," a young girl who comes to her in need of advice. Witt sees Jasmine as a version, perhaps, of her younger self, the self that grew up behind the Iron Curtain, indeed behind the Berlin Wall only to become a pawn of the feared Stasi. As Jasmine spends a week luxuriating in the presence of the adored Katarina, she asks her mentor a series of penetrating, even probing questions and these questions, together with the Delphic replies Katarina makes in response, form the backbone of this wise, witty and winning little book. Some may say, it feels like only about 30,000 words, far too short for a book costing $23.50, but i say, it was just the right length.
Jasmine asks about dating, and of course Katarina, as one of the most beautiful women in competitive sports, or indeed on Planet Earth, has plenty to say about it. Did you know the she once dated East German rock singer Ingo? In fact he was her first serious boyfriend; they met at a "youth festival" and fell madly in love. Those European "youth festivals" sound like fun. If I'm correct, that is where ABBA met each other a bit further north! Anyhow the government soon separated the young lovers. Jasmine then asks Katarina if it is true she once dated "McGyver"! Yes, she uses the name McGyver, almost as if she could not remember the actor's name who played him! (Richard Dean Anderson.) Instead of getting huffy, Katarina smiles sadly and reflects on how neither she nor Anderson were willing to move to the other's continent and that killed the romance, which however was quite "intense." What's little known is that McGyver himself (RDA as his fans call him) isn't a bad skater himself! In love, Witt advises,"if you want to become really serious, to have the relationship work, then somebody has to play second violin." Doesn't she sound charming and old world, where we in California might say, "second fiddle"?
Katarina also discusses her famous nude appearance in PLAYBOY. And she puts it in context, the context of the way that in Europe, particularly her country, nudity is natural. Until she was sixteen she walked around topless everywhere. Reading her life this way, you realize that an appearance in PLAYBOY was just like breathing in and breathing out for Katarina Witt. Ahe is magnificent, the Princess Caroline of Monaco of the ice world. Long may she reign, in the USA at any rate, for she admits that in the US audiences are warm and love an old skater, whereas in Europe the attitude is much more, you're old, get off the ice. In America, she says, she was shocked to see Dorothy Hamill still feted and hailed and worshipped by audiences even in her late forties! Wouldn't happen in East Germany, Hamill would be relegated to cooking strudel for the younger players.
What a bore.......2005-12-20
I am a big figure skating fan. I have read every skating book out there.
I thought Katarina's story would be interesting. While not my favorite skater, her background would certainly be worth the read.
I was wrong. For one thing, this book seems to be set up in a way where Katarina is giving advice to a fictious up and coming skating star. Never quite sure if this girl actually exists or not.
Also, this book is preachy and....boring, boring, boring.
Where are the great skating stories, the background info on skating in Germany?
What about Katarina's fears and thoughts on life in general.
None of this in this book.
Skate right by this one.

Book Description
Christine and Danelle have been best friends forever, a relationship as seemingly infinite as the glow-in-the-dark stars they have affixed to their bedroom ceilings. Lately, though, the girls have been drifting apart, as Danelle's quirky moods turn into wild and reckless acts. At first Christine wonders if her friend is on drugs, but what kind of drugs make you climb a rooftop one moment and send you into the depths of despair the next? The truth behind Danelle's ups and downs is far more complex and dangerous than Christine ever could have anticipated. Ceiling Stars is a moving story about the strength and limits of friendship in the presence of mental illness.

A Ceiling of Stars.......2006-10-31
A Ceiling of Stars
Do you like a story with lots of adventure, and touching, sentimental moments? A Ceiling of Stars is a very heart-warming book that will keep you anxious to read more. It is told through a 12 year old girl, Vivian's, journal entries.
After reading this story I was very grateful for all of the things God has blessed me with. The story began after Vivian's father dies. Vivian and her mother are trying to get to Oregon from Ohio. They had little money so they stayed in a camping tent Vivien and her mother owned. While in Denver, Colorado, Vivien's mother went to find a job in the city to raise some money for the rest of the trip. She never came back that night, like she told Vivien she would. After three days of waiting, Vivien left the camp in search of her mother. She met many homeless people, including her new friend Locket, on the way. Locket and Vivien lived together on the streets for a long time. They would sleep in sleeping bags under bridges or any place that was warm. In the middle of the story, Vivien and her friend met Gabe. Gabe worked at a place called the Arch House. The Arch House was a place for the homeless and street youth. There they gave you food, clothes, a bed, and whatever else you needed. Vivien decided to stay there with Locket. After she and Locket were there for a few days, they started to search for Vivien's mother again. They asked the homeless people all over if they had seen Vivian's mother. No one knew her except one person named Mags. Mags was another homeless girl who had been helping to look for Vivien's mother. She knew right where she was, in the hospital! She wound up there because she was out late everyday drinking alcohol. Vivien was so happy just to hear that her mom was alive. From then on, Vivien and her friends lived on the street again. Soon, Vivien was caught by the police and was taken to the police station. She did not tell them her mom was in the hospital so she was sent to a foster home. She liked her new home, but wanted to be at the Arch House again. She was afraid, but had to go to a new school. This is where the journal entries end knowing where her mother was, even though she couldn't be with her, would have to be enough for Vivian.
In conclusion, I liked this story a lot. It had a lot of adventure and many sentimental moments that almost made me cry. Overall I would give this story a four out of five because of the lack of a strong ending.
A Ceiling of Stars.......2005-10-31
I LOVED this book. Its almost made me cry. Hey, if you liked this book, or want to read this book, you should also read 'StarGirl' and 'A Song For Jeffery'
A Ceiling of Stars.......2001-10-30
A Ceiling of Stars starts out with Vivien sending a letter titled, "to the person who finds this tent". Through letters and journal entries, Viven tells how she survived without a mother who had been seen around at bars late at night and her father who died even before that. Vivien becomes a city girl known on the streets as "Copper Top" and her range of friends include Skinny Willie, Sergeant Sam ( who thinks he is an officer) Catman, Mags and Locket. Vivien tells the hardships she has to face and visions about life before her father and mother basically disappeared out of her life.
Excellent.......2001-09-30
In absoulutly loved the book it was so good. It almost made me cry.
I really enjoyed this book.......1999-09-22
This book moves fast and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen to Vivien next. I could really feel the way Vivien missed her father because she remembered so much about the stories he used to tell her. I think Vivien was a really strong girl and I liked the book alot.
