This book delivers!.......2006-07-24
My only beef about this book is its title. It should be "Leading for Sales Results".
It is rare with all the "me too" books out there to see something that delivers. Mr. Marks does just that. It's a book I simply couldn't put down.
Leadership has become quite the buzz word lately. You can't pick up any business magazine without seeing a relevant article. But most of it just transposes the word leadership for management. While Mr Marks book is still a top down management style vs my training in Dynamic Governance--it brings some of the concepts to light.
I won't go through the book on a one by one line item--but a few ideas will entice you to purchase.
Ideas on where to find salespeople using "Guerrilla" tactics are not new but bear repeating. Prospecting is very important to me. I often cold call an office to receive not an inquiry for a product, but an interview. If cold calling is important to you, and you are cold called upon--there you go. Look for places where people use this skills but may be underpaid and opportunity challenged. The author suggests Nordstroms, where they probably not only have the skills but a professional wardrobe.
In interviewing, evaluate how the person thinks about his/her purchases. If you market a product with a one time close cycle and your candidate is a slow, think it over, take your time kind of sales buyer--they may have trouble pushing a prospect to purchase differently than their own style. The Japanese have a saying, "as above so below". Its amazingly basic but I never thought of it that way.
A recent blog entry on my website was a article on dread. Salespeople live their lives in dread because of prospecting, yet managers pick their battles and don't push it. As the author points out, prospecting is discussed during the interview and is given lip service by the candidate, but no follow through. As a manager if you allow that to happen, you are more at fault than the salesperson. Marks "call to action" is so simple and step by step, you don't have any more excuses.
Nothing here is hard to implement. One easy "take away" I will implement in my sales training and coaching is the C-Letter or commitment letter. It simply says as manager you agree to give the employee all the tools they need to succeed. The employee agrees to use those tools. This letter becomes a talking point in follow up evaluations.
Follow up evaluations are explained in wonderfully simple detail. This is a great read and one of the very few I'd heartedly recommend.

I am in the throws of starting my own company and growing an effective sales team. This book was referred to me by a business associate. I can't even begin to tell you the many ways in which my own frustrations have been minimized since reading this wealth of information, let alone what it's done for my salespeople! I love the way he writes--it's easy to read and it makes a LOT of sense. I think this book would be a godsend to any size business, not just entrepreneurs like me! I was so thankful to my friend for the recommendation that I took her out to lunch!

This is the first and only (to my knowledge) book of its type for salespeople selling agricultural capital equipment. Running counter to the mindless spat of generic "me-too" books on selling, this book stands apart. It is specific, credible and practical. It is also written to be understood. Quickly. Frank Lee has written a book which should benefit all iron salespeople.

In the past decade, indirect (Doppler) imaging techniques have opened up a whole new discipline in stellar astronomy, providing increasingly detailed photometric, magnetic, and chemical inhomogeneity images of stellar surfaces. Furthermore, new optical interferometers are already being used with sophisticated interferometer techniques to image stellar surface structures more directly, and in the future the ESO VLT Interferometer and other instruments will extend these capabilities enormously. These developments are highlighted in the first two sections of this book.
The large number of recent results, ground-based and space-based, and the lack of a generally accepted dynamo theory with predictive power for the stars and the Sun, result in an ever-growing complexity of interpretation of individual results. The IAU Symposium 176 on `Stellar Surface Structure' consequently focused on spatially resolved stellar observations throughout the H-R diagram, from O- and B-stars to late M-stars. Two further sections in this book summarize the current observational data on surface inhomogeneities in stellar photospheres, chromospheres, and coronae. Finally, a special section is devoted to next generation model atmospheres.

Book Description
In this book Kerry Whiteside introduces the work of a range of French ecological theorists to an English-speaking audience. He shows how thinkers in France and in English-speaking countries have produced different strains of ecological thought and suggests that the work of French ecological theorists could lessen pervasive tensions in Anglophone ecology.
Much of the theory written in English is shaped by the debate between anthropocentric ecologists, who contend that the value of our nonhuman surroundings derives from their role in fulfilling human interests, and ecocentric ecologists, who contend that the nonhuman world holds ultimate value in and of itself. This debate is almost nonexistent among French theorists, who tend to focus on the processes linking nature and human identity. Whiteside suggests that the insights of French theorists could help English-language theorists to extricate themselves from endless debates over the real center of nature's value.
Among the French theorists discussed are Denis de Rougemont, Denis Duclos, René Dumont, Luc Ferry, André Gorz, Félix Guattari, Bruno Latour, Alain Lipietz, Edgar Morin, Serge Moscovici, and Michel Serres. The English-language theorists discussed include John Barry, Robyn Eckersley, Robert Goodin, Tim Hayward, Holmes Rolston III, and Paul Taylor.

No less obscure.......2005-10-25
"Divided Natures: French Contributions to Political Ecology" covers a broad range of Gaulic political ecophilosophy over the past half century. While an interesting summary and exposition, the author, Kerry Whiteside, does little to hold the attention of the reader for any of several reasons.
I was particularly struck by the feeling that Whiteside has spent very little time exploring aspects of the natural world outside of his head. And therein lies the problem with his conclusions. It's like Alfred North Whitehead's comment of his friend, Bertrand Russell's first Harvard lecture on the Quantum Theory: "I'd like to thank Professor Russell for his brilliant exposition. And especially for leaving unobsecured the vast darkness of the subject."

I bought this book because I need to make a bimini top for the used boat I just purchased. (The old canvas is gone.) Unfortunately, this book's instruction on how to make a bimini top boils down to: "It's hard to make bimini tops, so you should use your old one to make a pattern for the new one." No help whatsoever if you don't have an old one! Buyer beware.
Not what you think.......2007-05-01
I was pretty disappointed by this book. Anything with "Big Book" in the title should be very comprehensive, instead this is an out of date, amateur attempt that has somehow lasted all these years, probably the title.
If you need a serious technical book on how to layout canvas detailing the complex process required to ensure a professional quality result, this is not the right book. If you want to build canvas duffel bags and other meaningless items, then maybe.
Big Disappointment.......2006-06-09
What a disappointment! This is not a book about boat canvas, this is a book about sewing arts and crafts in canvas on a boat. Projects include "A simple duffel bag", a "Life Jacket Bag", a "Bicycle Bag"; and under "Interior" are projects like "Sheets and Quilts" and "Curtains". There is some discussion of exterior boat canvas, but the information is cursory and focused on sailboats. If you want to increase your knowledge of boat canvas before laying down a few thousand dollars to have new canvas made for your boat, this book will not help you.

Just another book of projects with very little detail. If you are looking for a book that explains the hows and whys of sewing boat canvas, this is not it.

Good starter book.......2002-01-01
This is an excellent book for the aspiring canvasworker. Covers everything from the basics of tools and materials to step by step directions for projects of all sorts. You can save a fortune by doing canvas work for yourself, and this is a great way to get started.

i could not have gotten around in cape town without this map. Thank God I had it. It made my movement in Cape Town enjoyable and easy. Easily slipped into your bag or back pocket (sticking out of course)- all landmarks are clearly marked. public transportation stations clearly marked. easy to follow. don't go without this map.

But life changes quickly when his mother remarries and they move from California to Montana. From the start, Scott has problems with his stepfather and his stepbrother, Brad. Scott won't let anything interfere with his dreams as he trains and races Kaylah, his Malamute, and the other dogs on the team. But Scott doesn't know the obstacles he must face.

The Three Dogs were big and muscular, there was Bruno, Kalia but that they look and sound cool. The book gets more better towards the end when the three dogs won the sledding contest at Colorada. Kalia is a husky, which is a type of a wolf. Bruno looks like a black lab mixed with husky. I wish I could have these dogs from The Three Dog Winter. This is a good book. I will rate it a five.

I think that this is a great book. I couldn't put it down. It's about a boy named Scott McClure who races sled dogs with his dad. Then his father dies and his mother remarries . He moves from California to Montana. He had troble with his stepfather and his stepbrother Brad. Scott won't lett anyone or anything interfere with his dream. If you want to find out whats next read this book.
A Great Winter Story.......2000-07-31
This is a thrilling winter story that took my breath away as I read page after page of this exciting novel. As Scott and his family are trying to recover from the death of his father, Scott's mom seems to immediately re-marry again. Scott and his dad had both loved sled dog racing. In the new home with more siblings, Scott wonders if he'll ever be able to race a great team like his dad, since he only has one dog. Especially with this new family and new home.

This book is a great book. If you can get it I suggest read it.I really enjoyed it. I is about a young boy who sets out to fullfill his fathers dream. sled racing. His father dies and Scott Mclure only has one dog left. His mom sold all the other dogs. Scott's mom remarries and they move to Montana. Scott has trouble with brad his step-brother. when Scotts dads friend comes to visit he gives Scott chinook his best dog. scott then races in the practice for billings race where brads dog gets injured.to find out what happens next read the book.
Three Dogs are so Hard to get Sometimes.......1999-03-24
This book was good I couldn't put it down. Scott has to have three dogs to run in the race, unless he wants to go with the little kids. Kayla and Chinook (Malamutes) are already trained sled dogs but the third dog comes and goes. They finaly end up with three beautiful dogs

Many hedgerow shrubs have the potential to produce an abundance of berries that provide a vital winter resource for a variety of taxa. This study examines the temporal variation in the availability of berries on three of the most common hedgerow species in the UK, i.e. hawthorn, blackthorn and dog rose. Because of their abundance, convenient size and early ripening, hawthorn berries are preferred when fruit of all three species are available. Berries are utilised from early October until the middle of January, by which time the crop is almost depleted. In the arable landscape of the UK, hedge cutting most frequently occurs between harvest and drilling (July-October). Later timing (and reduced frequency) of hedgerow cutting is therefore recommended to enhance the availability of this important winter resource.
