An alright book, reviews a lot of positions which is important, but not enough submisions in my opinion, however it does cover a variety of techniques for takedowns and those are very important. It does not show counter-attacks nor defense if you get in trouble.

Good book for the beginner.......2006-08-06

The main complaint I had was that I was expecting to see alot more on techniques rather than history. About 1/2 of the book is spent discussing the history of how BJJ began and how it has evolved MMA. The technique section was OK and didn't have anything new. This would be a great book for someone who's just started doing BJJ, or thinking about getting into BJJ

The Whys and Wherefores of Grappling.......2006-01-22

This is one of the earlier books on grappling from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu perspective. Renzo is one of the big name Gracies form the Gracie Barra school and an early Pride veteran. He is also cousin to Royce Gracie of UFC fame. And that is where this book leans. The combat applications of Jiu Jitsu.

This is both a how-to guide and a snapshot of where Jiu Jitsu was in relation to MMA and self defence a few years back. The game has changed, but the book is still relevant. The book is largely about grappling against the striker, but includes enough striking work to show where jiu jitsu fits into the big picture.

Excellent But Not the Whole Story.......2005-11-21

The reviewer who said this book is poorly written and that Reno Gracie can't teach must read a different book than me. Reno (and his co-author) write with grace, precision and clarity. The Gracie family identified and corrected two key weakness of tradional martial arts:

1) Lack of ground skills.
2) Lack of strategy.

Reno wisely points out that powerful punches and kicks are often no use on your back. Many street fights end up on the ground and traditional striking fighters have no idea what to do there. In a real fight that's fatal. BJJ (Brazillian Jujitsu) teaches the ground fighting that (most) traditional martial arts sorely lack.

Second, most martial arts dont teach fighting strategy. What do you want to do? How are you going to do it? How will you attack your enemy? How will you win? This leaves people with no idea how to proceed. Chess masters say players with no stategy are just pushing wood. Experienced chess masters know what they want to do from the beginning of the battle until the king is crushed. Without a cohesive strategy you're just flailing around.

That said, BJJ isn't perfect. This book fits well into any martial artist's library, but it should be read with a critical eye. The book only covers one on one fighting and says there are no defenses to multiple attackers. That's ridiculous. Traditional kung fu, such as Choy Li Fut and Hung Gar, covers defenses against multiple attackers in depth. Kung Fu techniques were formed in battle, often against multiple opponents. Gracie says multiple times that because they've won a bunch of MMA fights BJJ is clearly superior to other martial arts. That's just dumb. As close as MMA are to real fights, they just aren't the same thing. And to say that kung fu and the like have no value is totally short sighted. He also says that by removing lethal techniques and using only techniques that can be practiced at full power that they created a stronger martial arts form. That's also patently absurd. Deadly or vicious techniques, such as eye goughing, stops, neck strikes, groin strikes, etc, are hard to perform in a real battle, but not impossible. To eliminate them in foolish, because you also eliminate defenses for them. Besides if you blind your opponent and kick him in the jewels, I guarantee that most of his ground grappling goes right out the window.

The perfect martial art would be a mixture of striking, deadly techniques and grappling, as well as hard and soft power. Maybe it doesn't exist yet and so we have to pull from multiple sources in order to become complete fighters. This book is a good start for your cross training.

Book Description

Melanie and Trent are fighters. They fight to hold their dead-end jobs and stay in school at the same time. They fight to stay off the streets, fight against a welfare system that is worse than useless for them. They fight to stay together.

The two surviving Bloom triplets (Rose died at birth), have lived a very good life until Lily tries to kill herself over a boyfriend; deadhead Iris knows she cannot cope because she is so shook up. She flees her relatively happy middle class Colorado home. On the road she meets Oregonian environmental activist Blair Jaeger fleeing a situation that went wrong. They journey together stopping in San Vacio, Mexico for some needed respite.

The hotel is a dump so Iris asks elderly ailing American expatriate Henry Whitman if they can rent his other house that he owns since he only uses one. Henry was going to refuse until she notices and comments about his Scrabble board. As they play Scrabble every night, a warm relationship forms until he begins to show signs similar to Lily's. Iris wants to flee out of fear for what Henry might do. She has no one to turn to as Blair is off to his next environmental event and the married doctor that she is half in love with ignores her. She soon realizes she needs to be with kindhearted dying Henry who has given her back her life one tile at a time.

FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS is a deep character study that focuses predominately on Henry and Iris as each find a way to live through their warm relationship. The story line enables the audience to comprehend why Iris fled Colorado and is considering running away before Henry dies, but she has matured so plans to be there for the person who was there for her. Barbara Haynie provides a deep look at people nurturing one another during a time of crisis.

From the author: The present study investigated the knowledge and perceptions of vocational rehabilitation (VR) of adults with learning disabilities (LD), as well as control variables which describe adults with LD and may have a bearing on access to VR services. This was accomplished by 1) determining the knowledge adults with LD had of their rights under federal rehabilitation regulations; (2) examining demographic control variables (e.g., sex, age, education level, hometown population, employment history, and income), which may have a bearing on the need for or access to VR services by adults with LD; and (3) examining experiences/perceptions of adults with LD regarding the VR application/eligibility process. A pretested questionnaire appeared in the January 1989 ACLD Newsbriefs. Findings indicate that while there was a group of respondents who were satisfied with the rehabilitation services they had received, there was also a large group of respondents who were either ineligible for rehabilitation services or dissatisfied with services they received. Generally, respondents' knowledge of VR was limited.
