5 out of 5 stars This book is a GREAT return on your investment.......2000-06-19

Dr. Phillips has simplified a very complex concept. His step-by-step recommendations to conducting ROI studies are clear and concise. However, caveat emptor! He simplifies ROI so well that it seems relatively easy; but beware: there are great hurdles to leap when conducting ROI studies. While Phillips does cover some of the most serious obstacles one may face, such as getting management buy-in, isolating training effects, and handling soft data, conducting a ROI study is by no means a cake walk. For instance, ROI is more than a fifth level of evaluation after Kirkpatrick's four. It should be conducted at all levels of evaluation, which Phillips does suggest. Furthermore, ROI, or any evaluation effort for that matter, should not be viewed as merely a summative attempt; it should be conducted in an ongoing formative manner. Every project should have an evaluation component that parallels each task through the lifecycle of the project.

Additionally, in my opinion, Dr. Phillips' conservative approach to ROI is the greatest selling point. He accounts for error in all his measurements. For instance, when collecting self-report data, he has the respondent allocate a confidence weighting to their estimates. This confidence value weights the response while taking into account error. Furthermore, when calculating values for hard data or converting soft data (i.e., work habits and attitudes) to monetary benefits, he offers formulas that result in a range and suggests that the lowest, most conservative value is reported. Converting soft data to monetary benefits can be painstaking, but Phillips very eloquently addresses the conversion. By obtaining estimates from stakeholders (with a confidence weighting, of course), soft data can contribute to the overall calculation of return on investment. Therefore, your final conservative monetary return is not only based on hard data, but it is based on the less tangible elements of your organization as well.

If Phillips' approach to calculating ROI is too quantitative or laborious for your organization, you should consider calculating the return on expectations. Return on expectations can be assessed via a concept mapping (a multidimensional scaling approach) technique derived by Dr. Bill Trochium at Cornell University. Visit www.conceptsystems.com to review his technique. With Dr. Trochium's visual approach, you have stakeholders (i.e., stockholders, executive management, clients, employees, etc.) set expectations for your organization and then assess the alignment between set expectations and the actual performance of end groups. The result is a graphic pattern match that is easily interpreted and empowers decision-makers at all levels. Concept mapping has some of the same problems inherent in ROI, such as obtaining management buy-in. However, it is much easier to conduct than an ROI study, is based on a sound measurement techniques, and produces graphical results that, when considered collectively, illustrate the expected bang for your organization's buck

The formula Phillips uses is a good one and he illustrates his model with many practical examples. There is a particularly good chapter on isolating the effects of training and this answers many of the objections raised to this sort of model where dollar amounts are calculated. The problem with the model is that it is mainly retrospective which means that you are closing the stable door after the horse has bolted in some cases. Having said that, it does deal with topics such as the collection of post program data in a thorough and clear way. If you are interested in intangible benefits of training then there is a chapter which deals with this topic. I would recommend that you also read the ASTD publication which Jack Phillips edited called 'Measuring Return On Investment'. Here there are 17 case studies which demonstrate how you can do ROI studies in the real world. Both these books are vital for anybody interested in the whole area of ROI on investment.

            Book Description

This symposium was devoted to a new celestial mechanics whose aim has become the study of such `objects' as the planetary system, planetary rings, the asteroidal belt, meteor swarms, satellite systems, comet families, the zodiacal cloud, the preplanetary nebula, etc. When the three-body problem is considered instead of individual orbits we are, now, looking for the topology of extended regions of its phase space. This Symposium was one step in the effort to close the ties between two scientific families: the observationally-oriented scientists and the theoretically-oriented scientists.

              2 out of 5 stars I've seen better.......2006-10-14

I've used other Falcon guides in Montana, and was very impressed. I admit I haven't fished in Yellowstone yet, and from the other reviews it looks like it's pretty useful.

But from just a reading standpoint, it's not very good. The pictures are terrible, and I don't think there's a picture of a fish in the entire book, if you can believe that. Also, there needs to be an overall map of some kind, so you can figure out where in the park the little maps are. Even if the big map was split into quadrants spread out over several pages it would help alot. Check out "Fishing the Beartooths" - now that's a great book.

              Just my two cents worth.

4 out of 5 stars A Map to the Cutthroats Homes.......2002-07-18

Recently, I managed to get the hay baled, unload several cow-calf pairs at the sale barn, and endure a screaming diatribe from one of my neighbors who was desiring to cut a road across the corner of my property for ill-defined reasons involving an elk hunting camp. When I demurred, spittle flew out of his mouth and he became quite agitated. For a moment, I thought I might have to get the Mossberg. In the end, he promised to make things so hot for me with our County Board that I would think the devil himself was after me. Against this backdrop, I decided it was a sovereign time to go fishing in Yellowstone.

I have mixed opinions about the worth and accuracy of some Falcon Guides, but not this one. Armed with this guide, I wended my way through the bunkers of industrial tourism that blight our otherwise wondrous first national park, dodging the hatch of RVs and uncurious flabbos that choke the roads in high season. I settled first on a stretch of the Lewis River, which Merriwether Lewis never actually saw. It fished about the way the author said it would, and his descriptions were accurate and clear.

Of course, anyone can write a roadside fishing guide but what about the pristine streams and creeks accessible only by foot or horse? I shouldered my pack and hiked twenty miles into the backcountry in search of some of the original strain of cutthroat. Again, his descriptions of Wolverine Creek and the upper Snake were clear and easy to follow. I used various atttractor patterns recommended by the author and some that weren't. Each produced an equal and abundant share of fish. I finished my week with a couple of nights on Pebble Creek in the NE corner of the park, fishing the undercut banks and big pools in the manner the author suggests. The cutthroat were plentiful, surprisingly sizeable, and not too selective. As a bonus, I saw a wolf pack cruising across the valley as I made my way down the stream bank.

The short sections on ethics are a pleasure to read. Use barbless hooks at all times and don't poach another angler's water if he's clearly fishing a stretch you covet. Get out of bed earlier next time. The author occasionally gives short shrift to some of the more difficult trails in the Park, but if you want to get away from your fellow sportsmen and enjoy Yellowstone the way Colter did, take such damnings with a grain of salt. Overall, his impressions of the park's waters and their fishability mirror my own over the last 15 years or so. Also, he is not kidding when he estimates the number of fisherman who crowd popular sections of river, such as Slough Creek and the Yellowstone near Hayden Valley. Leave these waters in high season for the Zebco crowd and plan on fishing them in the off-season.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for where & when to fish Yellowstone.......2002-02-23

The best book on access points and times to go inside and outside the park. It provides many useful hints on further exploring you might do as well. It is a perfect complement to Craig Matthews' Yellowstone Fly Fishing Guide, which focuses more on hatches and flies rather than specific access to each stream or river.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book on Fishing in Yellowstone!.......2000-08-16

I had purchased this book and one other for my trip to Yellowstone. This was by far the best book, had all regulations and great information on where to fish in the area. I studied this book in anticipation of my trip, had always wanted to go to Yellowstone and fish. With the use of this book and its recommendations, I had the best day of fishing in my life, caught 40 trout in one day. All I can say is get the book read it and follow the recommendations and guide you wont be sorry. Jeff

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and intimate guide to fishing Yellowstone........1998-08-26

Extensive and very detailed tour of fishing in the Park, organized by watershed and with detailed information re: seasons, popular flies and lures. This book is packed with useful information and does not waste the reader's time with flowery descriptions and sentimental musings. Directions to fishing waters are clear and concise. Thorough maps are included. Poor fishing areas are identified as such and may save the reader from fruitless efforts. Guide includes directions and descriptions of waters which may be fished from the roadside as well as those requiring a day-hike or multi-day pack trip to reach. Highly recommended for novice and expert angler alike.

5 out of 5 stars Best starting point for learning Arabic.......2007-06-25

When I first starting learning arabic on my own this was the first book I bought after checking many other titles. If you are going to start out by yourself this is the perfect book to choose and it is cheap. It covers just enough without confusing you too much and introduces the material in an accessible and concise manner. The key to learning how to read and write is practice, practice, and much more practice, and that is why the simplicty of this book is important in my point of view. It gives you the structure to learn and gets out of your way, the rest is up to how dedicated you are.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-13

Having tried for several months to learn Arabic, through various means, I came across this book, bought it, and suddenly, it all makes sense to me. This is the best source I have found in my quest to understand this increasingly important language. About halfway through the second chapter, everything clicked into place in my mind and "I got it". If you are going to learn Arabic, start here first, and the learning process will be made so much easier.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-05-04

I have been trying to learn Arabic for the past few years. I've bought many books but none have been as helpful as this one. I wish I knew about it before. I probably would have been speaking, reading and writing Arabic a long time ago.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the Arabic alphabet...........2007-04-23

This book is exactly what its name implies, a good introduction to the Arabic alphabet. It does a good job of introducing the letters as they occur in different positions, introduces some basic vocabulary and gives you a good grounding for further study. It accomplishes this goal in less than 100 pages in a very accessible, non-intimidating way.

I say this is a good start because to actually read and write Arabic one would need to know more grammar and some of the nuances of the script which are not covered. However, for an introduction this is very thorough and some of the shortcomings are discussed in the spotlight reviews, so I won't repeat them here.

As a Westerner who has a casual interest in learning Arabic and Arabic script, I found this book to be ideal. A good accompaniment to it is Read and Speak Arabic for Beginners which for about $12.00 gives you some basic vocabulary, a 1 hour CD to help with pronunication and a set of flashcards to review recognizing words. This book and the one I'm reviewing make an excellent, inexpensive and fun introduction to a very difficult language.

                    Book Description

"There was more to do than music, of course. She was a good human."

That's what Dolores's brother Jimmy thinks about her when she's seven years old and can scream Nirvana lyrics at the top of her lungs in a voice just as angry and knowing as any teenager's. Dolores is a force to be reckoned with. As she grows up through these seven stories, you can call her what you want -- strangely beautiful, weird, quirky, a loner, brave -- it doesn't matter. Because Dolores always will be, quite simply, Dolores.

5 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: DOLORES: SEVEN STORIES ABOUT HER.......2002-10-08

"'New girl?' asked Mary in her minimalist way, displaying absolutely no interest; Dolores had detected a mean and iron spirit beneath her falsely charming demand for fealty from the other girls. 'Not really,' said Dolores. 'I've been one all my life.'"

DOLORES: SEVEN STORIES ABOUT HER is a memorable collection of short stories about a girl who you'll long to meet. A day after reading it I'm already missing her! The seven glimpses we are given of Dolores--set chronologically between the ages of seven and sixteen--provide a brief-yet-vivid portrait of a girl who is growing up strong, who is comfortable with who she is, and who is an absolute joy to know.

Dolores's growth, from the seven year old who is able to gain the admiration and respect of her big brother's teenage friends, to a teenager herself--ready and able to face down the fiercest threats flung her way, is accomplished with the ever-present support of that big brother, Jimmy. The most poignant scenes in the book are those in which Jimmy is there, time and again, to guard her from harm, to converse with her at the crack of dawn, or to smile and wave at her from up in the bleachers.

"They heard the sound of things being scraped onto plates. Twice.
'Now the music will go up,' said Dolores.
The music went up. It was jazz piano.
                    Footsteps came down the hall.
'You think he likes all this?' Jimmy asked, in spite of himself.
Jimmy heard a rustling in Dolores's bed as the footsteps drew near the door.
'I think he likesus,' whispered Dolores. 'Now, pretend you're asleep! It's the least we can do.'
Jimmy closed his eyes and lay still. The room was quiet as the door opened."

Dolores, a girl who has learned how to slice through all of the popularity nonsense, how to wield a hot hockey stick, and who also plays a mean electric guitar, is a girl you've gotta meet ...
