How you learn and what you learn are inextricably linked. Every time a person avoids a task or uses an unsuitable approach, an opportunity to learn is lost. If you're striving to improve productivity and profitability--and foster job satisfaction—in your organization, then you need to create a learning environment. With the Learning Tactics Inventory (LTI), your participants will discover how they learn best and how they can adopt new learning strategies. The Facilitator's Guide details all key workshop procedures—including setup, administration, and follow-up—and provides you with reproducible overhead and handout masters. Any facilitator, even non-training professionals, will be able to run an LTI workshop. Your participants will quickly score and interpret the inventory using the practical Participant's Workbook.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Soil Book I have Read.......2005-03-20

This is the best soil book that I have read. It contains excellent detail and a lot of information. For example, "Soil is a mixture of air, water, mineral particles, and decayed (or rotted) plants and animals. Scientists call the mineral particles inorganic material. The particles made up of dead plants and animals are called organic material." Covers such topics as soil components, formation, types, and conservation. Also covers organic farming and composting. Includes interesting topics such as african mud cloth, soil orders, solving crime with soils and pH. The book design is orderly and there are photos as well as illustrations. Mentions the occupation of pedologist or soil scientist. There are lists of additional resources, a glossary, and an index. Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

The Internet offers photographers an unprecedented opportunity to exhibit (and sell) their work worldwide. This insightful and succinct manual gives them the expertise needed to do it. No sophisticated or expensive equipment is required, and the easy-to-follow approach to building and maintaining a professional-looking Web site will reassure even those with the most basic computer skills. The first part of the book provides a general introduction to the Internet, its capabilities and limitations, and to Web site design and planning. A more comprehensive discussion of specific issues follows, including creating your first Web page, combining text and graphics, using tables to control layout, getting noticed, and legal matters.

                  3 out of 5 stars A good book for the web-novice photographer.......2005-05-02

I am not, by any stretch, a professional photographer; but I do enjoy snapping plenty of images as a hobbyist. Nor do I have experience at building a website; but may like to try my hand at making an amateur photography site with an Alaskan twist. So when I saw the book, "Photographers' Guide to Web Publishing," I was intrigued.

The book is written by Charles Saunders, a pro who specializes in medium format monochrome photography. This book is one of a series published by Photographers' Institute Press (PIP) in the UK (sold through Sterling Publishing); and the first I have encountered for the novice web author with an interest in photography. Ideally written for the self-employed professional who would like to bring their portfolio to the web.

At under 200 pages, the book is an easy read and does not get bogged down on the technical end, but rather gives the beginner the basics of good web design. In the first half, Saunders gets the reader thinking about the intended web audience and their surfing expertise as well as browser requirements and HTML standards. Also covered, are topics such as shopping for an ISP, web hosting service, and domain name.

The second half of the book lays down a framework for the beginner to actually write their first web page. Covering first HTML, then moving on to cascading style sheets, the use of JavaScript, management and organization of images and content on the site, and tips on enhancing the user's experience. It caps off with business promotion, protection and legal issues.

Photographers' Guide to Web Publishing is well illustrated in full color (except where the author uses his own B&W images), and offers plenty of room in the margins for notes. I found it to be well thought-out and organized. The example screen shots are, unfortunately, from the Window's side, but the text is, for the most part, non-platform specific. Saunders gives examples of how your web design choices may look different when viewed from a Mac verses Windows machine and advocates choices that compromise to look good from both platforms. Disappointingly; however, he makes no mention of Safari.

For the web-ignorant professional photographer, to the amateur shutter bug with an interest in taking a first 'swing' at building a web site, Photographers' Guide to Web Publishing is worth the $19.95 cover price.

I have an autographeed copy the ©1946 edition of Driftwood Valley. I had the privilege of growing up in the same rural Pennsylvania town as Ms. Fletcher. When I was a teenager, I was employed by Ms. Fletcher to clean house for her one summer while she was away. She is a very nice woman with a remarkable background. She has set aside a nature conservatory in Northeast Pennsylvania which is open to the public. She has always been active in protecting the environment and wildlife. I re-read Driftwood Valley every couple of years and just love the adventure and challenges of this true-life story. What made it even more exiting for me is that the author was from my hometown.

I am pleased to see this book has recently been reissued. I have an old, but treasured paperback copy. The author is observant of, informative about, and acutely responsive to the environment she describes. Having experienced winters in that region I would say she is especially adept at rendering the harsh, but radiant winters.

This book is an amazing journey into the frontiers of nature, exploration and science in the 1930's.

5 out of 5 stars Move Over Annie and Tell Henry David the News.......1999-12-19

Do not buy one copy of this book! When you finish you will press it on a friend, who in turn will press it on another. In a month it will be out of the county; in two out of the state. You will not see the book again and you will sorely miss it. So buy two copies: one for re-reading, one for evangelism.

Driftwood Valley is easily the best book written on an outdoor theme by a woman. Why it remains buried in obscurity is a wonder. The best contemporary writing in the genre connot match it. Pilgrim at Tinker Creek comes close; but to read the two books successively is to realize the limitations of Annie Dillard. Stanwell-Fletcher stands in better company with Thoreau. In her depictions of winter life in particular she approaches the master. One is reminded constantly of "The Pond in Winter", "Brute Neighbors", and "Winter Animals". There is some of the grandeur of Thoreau's contemporary, Francis Parkman, in her prose, too, when she lifts her eye to sweep the horizens of the immense British Columbian landscape.

Ultimately, this is a big, confident, heroic book. No trembler in the world's genetically reductionist sphere is Theodora Stanwell-Fletcher. She sees Heaven's glory shine, and revels in it. So will you when you read this most neglected of American masterpieces!

A last note: Ms Stanwell-Fletcher is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. I learned this from the bookjacket of the original edition I picked up for a dime at a yard sale. Having spent a year at Mount Holyoke as an exchange student, I took special heed of this and called their library seeking information. Was she still alive, etc. But no one there had heard of her! Later, a friend in South Hadley went to the alumni office, learned that she is indeed still with us, and was able to forward a fan letter to which she received a gracious thank you. I would suggest that any Holyoke grad reading this get the book, read it, contact your alma mater, and demand that they honor this lady. Ms Stanwell-Fletcher deserves it!

                            5 out of 5 stars Driftwood Valley.......2000-05-19

I read this book after finding it in a box in my parents attic at the age of ten. I have been trying to remember the title or author for years so I could read it again! This book is a magical read for anyone familiar with the ebb and flow of life in the wild. It inspired me to move to the Pacific Northwest and I am now planning my own trip to the Driftwood Valley. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors and reading about nature! Top notch!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book read over and over by my entire family........1998-12-06

I first read this book while on a solo bike tour of southern Vancouver Island (1973). Over the past 25 years I have reread Driftwood Valley several times and have passed the same tattered copy to family and friends multiple times. A must read if you are lucky enough to find a copy. Does anyone know what became of the author or the family of the author?

5 out of 5 stars I read this book over 25 years ago. It was a non-stop read........1998-01-10

The adventures and challenges of a married couple sent to a remote part of British Columbia to catalog flora and fauna. The book is the compilation of the authors diary notes written down over an 18 month period. Her descriptive talents are exemplary. One can easily visualize the natural beauty of this unchartered area and feel the winter cold, or the spring onslaught of the first mosquito hatch. A captivating true life story I read in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars All time favorite........1998-01-03

I first read this book when I was 16 and sick with the chicken pox. It is the only book I return to read every 2-3 years. My all time favorite.

For the four decades he's been writing about baseball for The New Yorker, Roger Angell has led all shortlists of the game's most astute and elegant chroniclers. With A Pitcher's Story: Innings with David Cone, he attempts, with thrilling command, something he's never tried before--devoting a whole volume to one player by spending an entire season at his heels. In pitcher David Cone, a cerebral student of his game and articulate practitioner of his craft, Angell finds a subject as perfect as the perfecto Cone hurled against the Expos on Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium in 1999. Better still, he finds in Cone a partner unwilling to shrink beneath the hot light of what would prove to be an agonizing and introspective year.

One of the game's premier pitchers, Cone came unglued in 2000; his 4-14 season was a disaster. The "wizardly old master" Angell had intended to extol was suddenly "Merlin falling headlong down the palace stairs." There's gold to be spun from that, though, and Angell, the essayist as deft alchemist, spins away. The more Cone struggles--the more he battles age, doubt, injury, and the various curves baseball fate can throw--to regain what he's lost, the more valiant he seems. It gives A Pitcher's Story its depth, its heart, its spirit, and its honor. If Angell entered into the project with the intention of getting a grip on the delicacies of pitching, he does, but he comes away with so much more. Like good battery mates, Cone and Angell work with, and off of, each other. Together, they evoke a canny portrait of a career at the crossroads, and a meditation on the powers of an elite athlete's pride. --Jeff Silverman

Great authour, great pitcher, poor book.

I am a great ball fan and a regular at the Blue Jays games - especially when the Yankees or the A's or Seattle come to town. Cone was here when we (my team the Jays - I do not own the Jays, everyone here calls them his team) won the world series in 92 and we all loved him.

I was excited when the book arrived from Amazon.com, but very disappointed when I actually read the book. I never finished it. I thought it was slow and a bit light. The author cannot keep your attention and the book wanders. Waste of money only two or three stars. Sorry but that is my humble opinion. Read DiMaggios's book "The Hero's Life" for a good biography about life on and off the field.

5 out of 5 stars brought back memories about a great pitcher.......2003-06-19

I've been a fan of David Cone since I was a little kid growing up in New York as a Met's fan. Even as my team started to unravel after 1986 and 1988, Cone was stellar, leading the league in strikeouts and being the one constant quality player that the team had. When he was traded out of New York I still tried to follow his career and was happy when he returned to New York, even as a Yankee. It was with great disappointment that I read about his last season where he just fell apart and ended with a 4-14 record. It was a sad ending to a great pitcher.

I wanted to read this book about David Cone. The book was originally supposed to be about the craft of pitching, how a top level pitcher prepares and the mechanics of pitching. That is the book that Roger Angell intended to write. However, when Cone's mechanics broke down and his season fell apart, Angell stayed with him and realized that he had a completely different story. This is the story of David Cone's last season with the Yankees and the collapse of a talented ballplayer.

Baseball is a game of digression. Since the only action in the game takes place during frenzied bursts of motion between long periods of waiting, this gives the sportswriters and broadcasters time to talk about the game at hand as well as games and moments from years past. This is a good thing to think about as you begin to read the book. Roger Angell takes us through the 2000 season of David Cone. He also provides a biography of Cone as well as moments from different parts of his pitching career. This is just like a baseball game where everything is connected to history. What is happening in May might recall David's rookie year, or his high school days. This is how the book goes, from the 2000 season when Angell is spending time with Cone right to David's childhood and back again. It may feel at times that there is very little organization, but I felt that it had part of the natural flow of watching (or listening to) a baseball game.

Some readers might be put off by the lack of chronology to the book and that it jumps around quite a bit. It is a little distracting, but it wasn't bad at all in my mind. It just felt like this is the way you tell the baseball story. I was completely enthralled by this book and I'm glad that I got the chance to read about one of my favorite pitchers from my childhood.

                                      3 out of 5 stars A Journey with Mr.Cone.......2003-05-29

Roger Angell takes you through the troublesome and nail-biting career to the ordinary every day life of the renowned pitcher, David Cone. From his first participation in a major league uniform with the New York Mets, to many thriving seasons with the Yankees and Red Sox, and from the time that David's arm felt like a stable rocket launcher, to the end of his career when he prospered by throwing mostly split-fingers and curveballs instead of a blazing fastball. A Pitchers Story not only makes the reader envision a life as an imfamous pro-baseball player, but also learns from the way to handle themselves under extraordinary pressure. This book is also similar to a pitching lesson in itself, as grips of seams and the twists of wrists are manifested by the masterful Cone. I am sure that this story has made hundreds of people realize how hard-working and dedicated a person must be in order to maintain a respectable and successful career in the big-leagues, as Cone consistently did throughout his almost two-decade career. This book is certainly better than the average biography, and I would recommend it to any lovers of "America's Past Time."

4 out of 5 stars The Essential David Cone.......2002-08-14

I'd been waiting a long time for a book to be published about my favorite baseball player, David Cone. This book is excellent in describing Cone both professionally and personally. A must-read for David's fans!

4 out of 5 stars If life gives you lemons............2002-07-31

and your name is Roger Angell you turn them in the best lemonade you can make. Mr Angell's books are the heart and soul of my small baseball books collection and I need only take one of them on a trip away from the ballpark, to be sure that whatever happens the sounds, smell and feeling of the game are close at hand.
Reading this book, knowing already that the task at hand was not what either Cone or Angell had bargained for, I was at first not overly impressed with the story. It went several directions at once and with all due respect felt like the book by an older writer who was too respectfull of his subject. But I take it all back after having finished the book. How many writers would have written this book in the first place? And of those how many would have been able to write a book that shows an athlete, flaws and quirks and all, yet always painting the true picture of the man. The bad year Cone has had makes for a somber tone in this book and maybe that fits with the time we live in. I think you cannot help but admire Cone and his frankness in his talks with Angell. And we cannot thank Mr Angell enough for having the courage and craftsmanship to turn this story into a beautiful novel.

                                          Book Description

A previous National Director of Education for Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics presents his do-it-yourself program for increasing reading speed and boosting comprehension.

"Speed reading is one of the truly useful educational ideas of the last few years, and this book can be the least expensive and most efficient way you can learn it." --William Proxmire, United States Senator

The perfect answer to today's information explosion, Peter Kump's rapid reading method has already helped thousands of people to read up to eight times faster, with better concentration and retention.

This program brings together the best of what classroom speed reading courses have to offer, and distills fundamental principles and skills that can be learned at home with the help of the drills and exercises provided. And because it lets readers choose their own material and set their own pace, it's the ideal method for busy people juggling a full schedule.

Breakthrough Rapid Reading makes conquering information overload a reality. So whether it's cutting down on that backlog of business reports and technical matter or scaling that mountain of newspapers and leisure reading, getting up to speed is only a matter of time and practice.

A very good book to help you speed read in no time!
Shipping was very fast. Just as what you'd expect from amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but adequate.......2007-08-27

This book covers the basics but you have to look hard to find them. This book came out in 1998 so it is a bit dated especially with the new training software that is available now. Reading pages in a book and timing yourself is a pain. I would say go with some newer software like Speed Reader-X or Ace Reader (just search amazon to find them) which is much easier to use and has newer updated information.

5 out of 5 stars BEST SPEEDREADING BOOK EVER!! 6 STARS!!.......2007-04-23

I will make this review concise for you slow readers, who have yet to learn the magic powers of speed reading.
Throw away all you think you know about reading faster. Many people do not start a speed reading course because they think they will not enjoy reading faster. YOU WILL ENJOY READING FASTER. People do not begin a speed reading course because they think that they will not be able to comprehend what they read. HOW ABOUT 80-90%+ COMPREHENSION?
I have studied various methods and techniques of speed reading. I have taken the Howard Berg course, the Photo Reading course, and have read several other books about speed reading. I have also taken the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics course (which this book is heavily based off of seeing that the author is the former director) Nothing has helped me more than this book. This book gives you a step by step (1 chapter a day) time line and drills so that within 6 weeks you too can be reading 3-8 times faster (750-2000wpm+ some 5000+!) WITH GREATER COMPREHENSION AND RECALL. This book teaches you how to read everything (similar to Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics course). It teaches you how to read fiction, nonfiction, text books, newspapers, as well as correspondence, and mail. One thing that I do have to add as a sidenote: if you are more of a visual or auditory learner i recommend the Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics, and Evelyn Woods Learning Dynamics courses (very cheap on ebay) only because I know that it may be difficult for ADHD prone individuals like myself to have the executive function to sit down and do the drills everyday. It actually took me over 2 years before i finally sat down and did the drills and went through the book, but I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY I DID. My comprehension and love for reading has gone up dramatically.

                                                      If She Had Only Known-

Darby Ellison isn't sure what she's gotten herself into. When she signed up for Brentwood High's new student-run broadcast program, she thought she'd get two credits and a bit of excitement. What she got was an assignment tailing an ambulance and witnessing a birth thirty miles from the nearest hospital-.

Then there is Jake Saunders, Darby's teammate on her first assignment for Live From Brentwood High, who is smart, handsome and friendly. Romance is just around the corner, but so is their teacher Ms. Wright, who has firmly declared that Live! is no dating game.

Chasing flashing lights and dodging a date with Jake are definitely NOT what Darby had in mind-.
