Book Description
To develop staff effectively, supervisors need consistent standards. This practical guide contains detailed samples of standard position functions--complemented by objective and measurable assessment criteria--that can be adapted for use by all libraries. Standards for paraprofessional staff include public services, technical services, and administrative jobs. Standards for professional staff include department heads/administrative tasks, public services (divided into reference, bibliographic instruction, online searching, Internet usage, interlibrary loan, government documents, and circulation/ access services), and technical services (divided into cataloging, acquisitions, and systems automation). Also contains performance standards for student workers, a special section covering background and management issues of performance standards (including EEOC and legal issues), a bibliography, and an index.
Customer Reviews:
Down-to-earth, immediately useful manual........1998-05-20
This title presents a readable overview of performance appraisal in libraries, followed by specific standards for almost any type of library position. Most standards given are measurable, although explicit measures are not always indicated. While standards for student assistants are NOT explicitly presented, several of the standards given for paraprofessional staff could be applied to student assistants, and there are several references given to other works on assessing students.
Ms. Goodson presents a sensible, step-by-step approach for reforming a library's appraisal process. In addition, she instructs both administrator and non-administrator how to proceed.
This book, while a little expensive for the personal bookshelf, is well worth the price for any library involved in any type of performance appraisal. In a library which is beginning a reform process, ideally every member of the reform team would possess a personal copy of the text (or at least the second chapter).
Book Description
Original ads, historic design drawings, and factory photographs tell the definitive story of the American tractors development, mechanical innovations, groundbreaking designs, and company histories. Best-selling author Randy Leffingwell researched and photographed restored classics and one-of-a-kind experimental models from coast-to-coast to deliver the goods on American farm tractor. This is the book that started it all! Previous hardcover edition (0--87938-532-4 pub 1991) has sold a staggering 150,000copies!

The History Of Tractors With Great Photographs.......2005-05-27
This is a nice book for persons involved in farming and tractors. It is an attractive large-size full-color book that is an excellent coffee table book. If you have been involved with tractors over the years, you will certainly enjoy this book's look back on the American Farm Tractors over the years.
Barnes & Noble republished this book in 2002 with the very same cover. Whether you locate the original 1991 edition or the more recent 2002 edition you will have essentially the same book.
This book will definately be a "keeper"........2002-05-10
Bought for my husband for Christmas since he comes from a few generations of tractor owners this book was the perfect gift for him to gather his son on his lap and share stories and pictures. We wish it had more pictures of more classic oldies. The brief histories given on the pictured tractors are pretty good though. I bought this book second hand, in great condition and plan on saving to give to our son when he has children so he can pass along the stories.

good job by an young author.......2002-12-05
An informative, interesting book, considering that the author was only 16 when he wrote it. So many tractor books seem to be written by people who have never seen or driven one. This author is a young farmer, with a genuine interest in tractors and their history.
Book Description
Spin up the turbo, lock it into all-wheel drive, and shift into high gear to take a high-horsepower tour of the tractors of the 1960s! American Farm Tractors in the 1960s discusses and explores the history of John Deere and other prominent manufacturers such as IH, Famrall, J.I. Case, Allis-Chalmers, Massey-Ferguson, Ford, and White farm equipment, along with the people who produced them. Minor marques like Caterpillar, Stieger, and Versatile are also discussed, along with obscure marques and orphans.About the AuthorThe author/photographer team of Rod Beemer and Chester Petersen Jr. have collaborated on several books including Inside John Deere, Ford N-Series Tractors, and John Deere New Generation Tractors. Beemer is a writer, researcher, and tractor enthusiast. Petersen is a writer and photographer whose work appears regularly in Successful Farming and The Farm Journal. Both men live in rural Kansas.
Customer Reviews:
OK book, great pictures.......2003-01-10
Fairly decent, however there are some big pieces of misinformation. For example in a picture caption it states that the Oliver 2050 and 2150 had Cat V8 engines. Anyone who knows anything about Olivers knows it was the 2255 with Cat engine. Also a caption of JD tractor says it is a 5010 when it has a row crop front end? Nice pictures and short company history for each of the companies. Just be aware that not all of the info is gospel.

Good pictorial review and brief history.......2001-10-03
A 96 page book where every page is dominated by one or more pictures of restored and unrestored examples of some of IH's earlier models up to the Magnum series. A great book if you like pictures, but don't expect many details. I've had the book for about 7 years and still look through it from time to time because of the good pictures.

A must for 70's 80's and early 90's tractor enthusiasts.......2001-06-19
I bought this book after I purchased "Modern Farm Tractors" by the same author. While it is not as perfect and outstanding as "Modern Farm Tractors", this book brings out details of some more obscure tractor companies before they were sucked up in the massive mergers of the late 90's. Most of the pictures are great. I especially appreciate the fact that many of the tractors in the pictures have spent some time in the field--they are not "factory fresh" OEM photos.

Book Description
She's the mascot for the University of Maryland's sports teams (their slogan: Fear the Turtle) and her ancestors were nearly driven to extinction by Victorians who indulged in turtle soup. But as she buries herself in the mud every night to sleep, the diamondback terrapin knows none of this. The size of a dinner plate, she can live at least forty years and is the only turtle in North America who can live in brackish and salty waters.
The diamondback terrapin is named for the beautiful concentric rings on its shell. Its habitat ranges from Cape Cod to Corpus Christi, Texas, with seven subspecies identified along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Several diamondback populations have been the subjects of ecological studies in recent years, but most of that information was buried in scientific literature and various state and federal reports-until now.
Synthesizing all known research on this remarkable animal, Diamonds in the Marsh is the first full-scale natural history of the diamondback terrapin. Focusing on the northern diamondback, Barbara Brennessel examines its evolution, physiology, adaptations, behavior, growth patterns, life span, genetic diversity, land use, reproduction, and early years. She also discusses its relationship to humans, first as an important food source from colonial times through the nineteenth century, and more recently as a cultural icon, frequently depicted in Native American art and design. She concludes with a look at contemporary hazards to the terrapin, and urges continued study of this marvelous creature.

Endangered by Turtle Soup, this book is great for turtle lovers, especially Diamond Backs.

for anyone who wants to learn about this wonderful reptile........2007-03-25
Diamonds in the Marsh is an excellent source for anyone who wants to learn about this special reptile. Written with the biologist and non-biologist reader in mind it gives a historical and current history of the diamondback terrapin as it struggles to survive along the eastern coast. For the biologist it gives lots of scientific information and footnotes. For the average nature lover it also includes stories of how people are working to protect this lovely creature. A must book for anyone who is studying or just appreciating the diamondback.

The instructions are fully illustrated with photos and drawings as well as exploded views and parts lists, and much of this information can be applied to other guns with similar actions.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific value at this price.......2007-06-01
Most of us have come to understand the differences between performing routine maintenance and accessory installation, and chambering and fitting a new barrel. If you are standing in the midst of expensive machinery, and you know how to use the equipment with a quality result, you don't need this book. If you'd like to install your own scopes, recoil pads, replace small parts and tinker with a gun to improve its accuracy, you would probably find this book to be useful.
"Do-It-Yourself Gun Repair" is presented into five logical parts: An Approach to Gunsmithing in the Home Workshop, Basic Maintenance and Repair, Disassembly - Repair and Reassembly of Popular Firearms, Advanced Techniques, and The Final Steps. The book begins by showing ways of assessing if your firearms need work or maintenance, then it move on to a chapter dedicated to determining the scope of work that could reasonably attempted. There is a chapter presenting common and useful hand tools and a brief section covering frequently used power tools. The section that follows, which addresses the work area, special tools and parts supplies is pretty sketchy. A chapter titled "Thinking Like a Gunsmith" is thoughtful, but not substantial enough in content to assist someone in acting on some of the suggestions.
"Basic Maintenance" is more of a page filler. It mostly advises how to clean a firearm, something that could be found in many sources, including packaged in a cleaning kit. A follow on section covering analyzing and correcting accuracy problems is well written and, based on my own experience, would be very useful to almost anyone. "Ten Easy Gunsmithing Projects" is OK, but the projects are a little specialized and most lead to purchasing tools or material Brownells. The section isn't bad, I just believe there are more universal and common projects, and I am not taking a poke at Brownells. They are one of the best tool and material sources out there for us gun owners.
There is an excellent section regarding proper scope mounting that results in centered optics and proper hardware alignment, and included the proper use of shims under mounts for the purpose of leveling. This is an area so fundamental to good accuracy and frequently people don't take the time to perform this task correctly. The section on various firearm disassembly and assembly is actually very good. The author includes popular firearms, very good illustrations and photos, assembly tips, and coverage of common problem correction for each specific firearm.
Some of the information offered in other sections is not so directly useful. You are not going to learn how to checker from half a page of text and one picture of a checkering tool; artistic craft work takes a lot of talent and practice to master. There is an eight page chapter, chapter 23, dedicated to drilling and tapping a firearm for sights that is decently done, but you would need to purchase a $160 B Square Professional Drill Jig or a $400+ Foster Scope Mounting Jig to do the job, and you would have to possess the basic skills of drilling and tapping and how to properly set up fixtures. There is a good information addressing the repair of stocks and fitting a recoil pad, but they all presume prior woodworking and machine operating skills and the use of some specialized machinery and fixtures. Work of this types, to justify the cost of fixtures, needs to be a frequent requirement or it is easier and less expensive to drop the gun off with a good gunsmith. Still, it doesn't hurt to know what you are asking a gunsmith to accomplish when you purchase services.
Very good reading.......2005-10-07
A great general reference. Ed did a great job with this one. I can say confidently, I enjoyed this book. Not a bad investment if you want to get a small taste of the craft. Enjoy, and thanks Ed!
Love the book, not the author.......2005-08-20
This is a great book for people aspiring to become a professional gunsmith. It may have some usefulness for the normal gun owner as well. The detail and comments provided show this book was written by someone with an extreme amount of knowledge and experience in the subject. Unfortunately the author realizes this and wrote this book to reflect it. His egotistical lectures of exactly what the reader should do go beyond what I expected to gain from this book. Then there are the contradictions that lead me to not believe in the author's knowledge as much as I did when I started.
If you want a very technical guide on how to become a professional gunsmith, this is the book for you. If you want a Do-It-Yourself Gun Repair Manual (Gunsmithing at Home) look elsewhere.

My 4 year old daughter LOVES this book! I had to read it for a week straight for her, being a cyclist myself, I didn't mind. My daughter now wants to go for a bike ride every day I get home from work. The book it self is incredible with conveying the value of team work. I highly recommend this book for all aspiring cyclist out there. The only negative is that my daughter wants to put pizza in her jersey poket on every ride, read the book and you'll understand why.

Customer Reviews:
Self-serving book but better than most first person jock books.......2007-06-11
This book is mostly what you would expect from a jock telling their story in the first person. That said, Ernie does reveal some interesting things about his first marriage, his dealings with Texaco, and Kyle Petty.
Ernie was married about three years to his first wife and had two sons by her - or so he thought. DNA tests several years later proved that he was the father of neither child. The book implies that the person of the two children were the same man. Anyway Ernie was understandibly hurt by this and no one can blame him. Second, when Ernie gave a thank you speech at his first NASCAR awards dinner at the Waldorf in NYC he inadvertingly forgot to mention his major sponsor Texaco. Immediately he went over to the table where the Texaco executives were sitting and apologized, but nonetheless the executives went into a huff. Maybe those executives never spoke to a large ballroom of people on national TV. So much for filling my car up with Texaco. Third, Ernie believes that Kyle Petty would have been a much better driver had he learned how to drive on short tracks. Of course with his pedigree Kyle never had to work his way up the racing circuit. Interesting.
I found it interesting that when Ernie won his first Daytona 500 he went home that night to sleep in his studio apartment. The book is good at telling you how it is to work you way up through the racing car circuit and and the problems drivers have when not blessed with the support of good racing organizations and rich sponsors.
If you a NASCAR fan you'll want to read the book, and unless you're an insider to the sport you will learn from the book.
Good and satisfying book.......2005-03-22
I had bought the book for about $1 at a dollar tree store, and figured that it would be a boring and uninteresting biography or something like that, but boy was i wrong! When i first started reading it i couldnt put the book down, and before i knew it i was six chapters in. So after reading the rest of the book, i came to a conclusion this was the best thing that i have ever gotten for under $1. Awesome book although it did lack some things but thats alright because he is not a writer.
Good story, but............2005-03-02
Irvan's heartwarming story is shared in "No Fear". The balance between family and racing is appropriate; and a nice collection of photos is presented in the book.
However....
Thumbs down, and 2 stars off to whomever "edited" this book. The book is full of typographical errors; "Morgan Shepard" instead of "Morgan Shepherd", "Texaco/Haviland" instead of "Texaco/Havoline", as well as factual errors. "it was a long race...600 miles..."; in fact; the fall race at Charlotte is only 500 miles.
A good story; however; the content needed a better review before going to print.
No Fear.......2004-03-02
The book No Fear was a book of one mans struggle up through the ranks of racing, and how it all could have ended in a heart beat. This book first takes place at Michigan speedway. Ernie Irvan is a racer on top of his game, a professional at what he does. They are out doing practice laps the day before the race at Michigan, trying to get the setup right. Larry, Ernie's crew chief, told Ernie to take only 10 laps and then come in, and Ernie, being Ernie, is going to take 11, whether Larry likes it or not. On the eleventh lap in turn three, Ernie blows a tire and hits the wall nose first at 190 mph. Even with all of the restraints and safety they have, hitting a wall at 190 mph and coming to a dead stop, will screw you up because momentum continues with your intestines. The doctors predicted that Ernie would not make it through the night on life support. After months of rehabilitation and having the "never give up attitude" that he had, he was able to continue racing, even though no one thought he would be the same after the accident. It took a long time to get to where he was, coming from a low class family with barley enough money to race, let alone utilities, but Ernie was determined to do his best and become a racer. Even after his father walking out, and watching his best friend die in a race, he never gave up. His favorite saying was "When times get tough, the tough get going," and he did believe in that saying because no matter what he just kept going!
This booked was a very well put together story of Ernie's life. It showed all of the hardships he had to go through, the ups and the downs. It really made clear how much he had to struggle to make it to where he was, and how he almost lost it all in the blink of an eye. The book had some choppiness to how the races were put together, like how it would only explain some and not even mention others and then bring them up later, was a little difficult to comprehend. However, how he talked about his incident first to get the readers attention and to bring them into his childhood was an excellent way to start the book. It was a very good representation of how NASCAR was coming up through the years, just like Ernie and how he was struggling with his career.
I thought this book was a very interesting and excellent way to show how his life went and the struggles he had to go through. It will keep you interested through the whole book, and it has very encouraging words in it. It will show you all of the things he went through, and you should be able to see what it is like to have to go through it to try to get to your goals. Even when it seems like you can't and the people around you think you won't be able to, to keep on trying, never give up, and have No Fear!
No Fear.......2000-02-29
Ernie explained everything that I had ever wanted to know in this book. I always knew that there was so much more to the Texaco story. It's an inside look at his life. I watched him in his career and always wanted to know more. This is more.

Book Description
Trent and Adam were best friends and rally racing buddies until a terrible accident, when Adam was at the wheel, puts Trent in the hospital. After a long separation, the teens try to pick up their friendship where it left off, but Adam's guilty feelings and Trent's odd behaviour make it tough. Why is Trent hanging around Marcus, a guy he says he can't stand? And why isn't his Ritalin working anymore?
When Adam discovers Trent is dealing with the dark side, it's a race to save his friend from himself. Racing Fear is an action-packed ride that takes a hard look at the selling of prescription drugs.

Ashleigh has never been more excited--her favorite horse, Aladdin's Treasure, is running in the Kentucky Derby! But just before race day Aladdin has an accident while his jockey is breezing him. But with the Derby just hours away, can she bridge their trust in time?
Customer Reviews:
Will Aladdin win the Derby?.......2003-03-26
Aladdin's Treasure is a racehorse that was raised at Edgardale. He is going to run in the Kentucky Derby! Two weeks before the Derby, Aladdin is spooked and his jockey is thrown. She becomes afraid of him and the colt doesn't act the same. His jockey thinks he should be scratched from the Derby. Will Aladdin still get to run? This book was great! Definitely read it!
Shadow Roll, Anyone?.......2001-05-07
I loved this book, and I really enjoyed it, but on the cover, where's Aladdin's shadow roll? I think the cover artist shouldn't have forgotten it, it's too importiant!
Excellent book.......2000-12-18
This book is filled with excitment! I'll tell you a little about it Aladdin's Treasure is a black colt and his owners are thinking about running him in the Kentucky Derby. But before the race Aladdin is badly spooked and throws his rider and it's up to Ashleigh to convince his owners not to scratch him from the Derby. Derby Day is really interesting and I recommend it to any horse lover!
A Great Book All Around!.......2000-06-01
This book was great! :) I liked it a lot, especially that Ashleigh helped solve the problem to make him run better. But it is a little unrealistic that a little girl figured it out, when these top-notch trainers were stumped. But still, congrats to Chris Platt on a great book! I like the Ashleigh Series, although if you've read Ashleigh's Diary you inevitably know what happens in the end. When is it going to end? Not that I'm waiting or anything... Well anyway Derby Day is a good book! Email me if you read the series too! JoHorse1@yahoo.com
Nice!.......2000-01-02
This book was a wonderful edition to the Ashleigh series. Both Ashleigh and Rhoda are faced with confidence problems and they help each other out. Although, in the early Thoroughbred books, Ashleigh says she has never been to a track. And here, there is a Derby winner. But this book was one of the best books in Thoroughbred OR Ashleigh series. Keep up the good work! Signed- a faithful reader
