Book Description

Phineas Taylor Barnum was born on July 5, 1810 in the city of Bethel, Connecticut. He wasn't always the famous American showman as most people know him. In 1834 Barnum moved to New York City where he experimented with a variety of jobs. He tried selling hats and caps, running a boardinghouse, and working in a grocery store each unsuccessful.

Barnum began to write. He wrote of his perilous adventures among wild men, showing how wild beasts are captured and manageries are made.

Barnum was involved in things other than his circus. In 1865, Barnum was elected to the Connecticut legislature and led a fight against the railroad lobby during his first term, which turned out to be successful. From 1875 to 1876 he served as mayor for Bridgeport. Barnum was married and sadly his bride died in 1873. In 1874 he was remarried to an English woman. Barnum died in Bridgeport on April 7, 1891.

"The Greatest Show on Earth" was bought in 1970 after Bailey's death. Today, you may see the amazing circus, which still carries on the old tradition.

Animal Stories is written by P.T. Barnum extolling on his adventures in the wild. His descriptions of the animals, the reptiles and birds are so vivid, that one feels in the same place, at the same time as Barnum.

Reading this book was a lot of fun. There are a few gems of knowledge that can be picked out of this book, but truly I would only buy this book for the entertainment value. If you are looking for info on how to turkey hunt, your best bet is to go find someone who has been doing it for a while. Barring that, there is good information on the internet to get you started.

This book is a lot of fun, but definitely not a how to.

An absolute must read for ecery turkey hunter........2007-01-26

Tom Kelly is my favorite author of all time and Tenth Legion is a true masterpiece. It is a must read for every serious turkey hunter. His wit and humor are flawlessly intertwined with years of turkey hunting experience. The literary value of this book, as with the rest of his books, is in a class by itself. I am convinced that Kelly could write about anything and make it a pleasure to read.

Not so great.......2006-04-24

I didn't find that this book met my expectations. I've read better and don't understand all the hoopla about it... On the other hand my father loved it and is buying copies for his friends. So there you go, a mixed review. I still think the Flaming Turkey is the be all end all of turkey hunting stories.
This doesn't compare in my opinion.

The best book on turkey hunting ever written.......2005-07-20

Tom Kelly is the Mark Twain of our time. I have read this book more times than any other book save the Bible. The stories are so well written that I slow down my reading so that I can admire the way he plies his craft. Every hunter should have this book in his library.

Great point of view.......2004-12-11

Tom Kelly has a great dry wit and it comes out very well in this book. I refer in particular to his opinions on deer hunters. A great quick read for anyone who enjoys turkey hunting.

One of the Best.......2007-08-16

I've bought a lot of grammer books over the years. Some of them are well written some are not. They don't help me much but I keep buying them and hoping that someday I'll find one that helps me with all my style problems. I consider Elements of Style the best of the lot, but this one is a close second. Her examples of good writing as opposed to poor writing are very helpful. She provides not only a poor sentence and an alternative one but also various alternatives of style and sentence structure. I think the process of working towards a clear crisp sentence very helpful.

I'm a working writer who has found this book very helpful. An original hardbound edition holds an honored place in my library.

If you want to improve your own writing, then this is the book for you. You would likely only need one of the copy editing books recommended by other reviewers if you are (or want to become) a working copy editor.

Superb! I am a programmer by day and a writer of articles on programming at other times.

Growing up in England I was taught every miniscule detail of the English language. How to construct sentences and how pronunciation changes depending on word stems, Country of origin and so on. I had a pretty good grasp on writing. At work I spend some of my time re-writing briefing notes, user manuals, and proof-reading emails.

On top of this I study grammar and style manuals. You get a feel for where I'm coming from in terms of expertise.

This book changed my entire outlook on writing. I am only up to page 26 and already I have hacked through some articles like a whipper-snipper through a weeded garden. I found some habitual mistakes I constantly make and curbed some emerging ones. This is a fantastic book!

The last briefing note I edited started as a monstrosity of bad grammar and ended as a shining example of what this book has to offer.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It is only 200 pages but not a word is wasted. It is concise and packed full of information and is an example of its own subject.
