              Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "processing or preserving meat and meat byproducts from purchased meats excluding poultry and small game" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for processing or preserving meat and meat byproducts from purchased meats excluding poultry and small game across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                  Book Description

Since its development by The Pillsbury Company as part of the US space program, the HACCP (hazard analysis critical control point) system has become the most important technique for the identification and prevention of foodborne biological, chemical and physical hazards in food processing. This book presents the latest information on the HACCP concept and gives practical examples of its implementation at all stages of food production and processing from the farm to the consumer. In addition, guidelines are given for the management of the HACCP system within the food industry and how it can be incorporated into a total quality management program. The role of predictive microbiology in HACCP is examined and the relationship of HACCP principles to existing and future international agreements and regulations is explained. This book is essential reading for quality control personnel, production and processing managers in the food industry, and for government regulatory officials. It will also be of great interest to academic researchers studying the microbiology and quality of meat, poultry and fish products.

                        5 out of 5 stars Timothy Mikolay.......2000-06-06

During the summer of 1999, it was reported that Lake Erie would be 10-18 inches lower than normal and that boaters should be aware of this change. Did anyone bother to ask why, because the papers certainly didn't bother to research the matter. If you would like to know, then read this book. It provides some possible conclusions as to why a major lake like Erie would suffer such a drastic loss of volume. Additionally, Lake Michigan's levels have dropped, but millions of Great Lakes dwellers aren't exactly aware of Ice Mountain bottled water. It is the only water bottling company that has been allowed to pump water OUT of Lake Michigan, due to a kniving political maneuver. If such corrupt business deals are allowed to continue, we can continue to watch Great Lakes water levels decline.

Although dated, because some of the places described have changed considerably, i.e. the Cleveland flats, this book contains some elegant, historical descriptions of the Great Lakes' former natural glory and the beginning of and up to present man's devastating manipulation and tragic destruction caused by centuries of industrialization and neglect. At present, the Ice Mountain bottled water company sucks out Lake Michigan water to sell. A terrible first for ANY of the Great Lakes. This is an indispensible learning tool as well as a teaching tool for how we have changed forever the lifeline of these lakes and how we continue to do so, whether good or bad. Did you know that it's possible to empty one of the lakes into the aquafier underneath the water-guzzling, midwest breadbasket?

The book was published in 1987 so one can imagine if more destruction has occured since and if not, then maybe some good has come about. In any case, there are other sad truths to be read about in this classic of environmental history. I recommend it with the highest degree of respect.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for Great Lakes States residents.......1998-10-21

I read this book as part of the curriculum for my 'American Dreams and Realities' history class as an undergraduate student in the fall of 1991. The Late Great Lakes gives a good history of Native American and European use and abuse (most of the abuse perpetrated by the European folks) of the Great Lakes ecosystem. If you are a fisher person, this book will be interesting to you as it documents the numerous massive swings in dominant species in the lakes caused by overfishing and the introduction of non-native species over the last few centuries. The aspects of chemical pollution in the Great Lakes ecosystem are also important and well documented. A must read for anyone who spends time on the lakes in any recreational or commercial capacity (I used to live in Monroe, MI).

                              Book Description

For the first time, a series of detailed studies is available on the Late Palaeo-Indian occupations of the Great Lakes margins. These thirteen papers by prominent Canadian and American archaeologists and geological scientists will be of particular interest to anyone wishing to learn more about point typology, site disposition patterns, and geological events of this fascinating period. Editors Lawrence J. Jackson and Andrew Hinshelwood have assembled a diverse collection of articles providing an initial overview of the region from Lake Ontario to Lake Superor and beyond during this time of immense environmental change and challenge to human survival.

From the author: In 2001 and 2002, we inventoried the bird communities and vegetation of two 6.25-ha plots in a late-successional spruce-fir (Picea mariana-Abies balsamea) forest of northern Minnesota that was severely disturbed by a 1999 windstorm. We compared these results with those from two nearby plots that were largely unaffected by the storm. Using vegetation data collected from one of the two plots in each location before the disturbance in 1996 and 1998, we examined similarities between plots before and after the storm. The most significant effect of the storm on vegetation was a [greater than or equal to] 80% decrease in tree cover and a > 100% increase in shrub-layer structure because of trees that were tipped over or snapped off. Of 30 territorial bird species, 9 held territories exclusively in the blowdown, while 2 held territories exclusively in the control. By foraging guild, 10 of 11 (91%) species of ground-brush foragers had more territory cover in the blowdown, while 7 of 13 (54%) species of tree-foliage searchers had more territory cover in the control. Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia), Chestnut-sided Warbler (Dendroica pensylvanica), Mourning Warbler (Oporornis philadelphia), Yellowbellied Flycatcher (Empidonax flaviventris), and Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus) had significantly (P < 0.05) more territory cover in the blowdown, whereas Blackburnian Warbler (Dendroica fusca), Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa), and Yellow-rumped Warbler (Dendroica coronata) had more territory cover in the control. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that differences in avian territory cover were primarily attributable to changes in vegetation structure, in particular the increase of structural debris on the ground and the reduction in tree canopy, occurring because of the wind. Received 25 October 2004, accepted 30 August 2005.

                                      Description:
Large severe fires are typically rare in the northern hardwood forests of eastern North America, with estimated return intervals as high as 1400-4500 years. We investigated the history of large severe fires in western Quebec, Canada, where sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.), and eastern hemlock ((Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.) dominate a landscape at northern limit of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest region. Using a combination of provincial archives of fire data, interpretation of historic air photos and dendrochronological sampling, we estimated fire frequency in a 179,300ha landscape and tested the hypothesis that time-since-fire is a principal determinant of canopy species composition. Our results indicated that despite its proximity to the boreal mixedwood forest, fires have been relatively infrequent in this landscape, with over 60% of the landscape remaining unburned during the 413 year period of study. The overall fire cycle, an estimate of the time required to burn an area of equivalent size to the study area, was 494 year (95% CI: 373-694). This estimate showed strong temporal partitioning, with an elevated frequency that coincided with the period of pioneering settlement beginning in 1880, and spatial partitioning according to surficial deposits, pine dominance and ecological site type. Multivariate analyses elucidated both (i) distinct assemblages of canopy species that differed in their association with time-since-fire and (ii) the relative importance of environmental variables affecting canopy species composition, where time-since-fire explained the largest amount of variation. This time-since-fire effect suggested an important role for secondary disturbances in influencing composition of the canopy. Given the current long fire cycles, it is likely this landscape will experience an increasing dominance of fire-avoiding species such as sugar maple and eastern hemlock, with consequences for fire-adapted tree species and fire-dependent communities.

                                          Book Description

This is the first and only book available on the tier whose techniques with epoxy and silicone revolutionized saltwater fly tying. The family of flies Bob Popovics developed over the last three decades (dubbed "Pop Fleyes," a spelling that incorporates part of his last name with the fact that eyes are a prominent feature in their design) have proven devastatingly effective for stripers, bluefish, false albacore, and many more species. This book goes beyond the basic recipe format to provide the thinking behind Popovics's pattern development, a guide to key tying techniques and detailed notes on how to fish Pop Fleyes most effectively.

Anyone who fishes with a fly in salt or fresh water should consider this superb collaboration as fundamental reading. Seriously, I believe this book will together with G.E.M Skues's works, LaBranche and Pete Hidy's collaboration with Leisenring, will be referred to over the next century as fundamental revolutionary and rare works.

Again the applicability of the theories expressed extend well past the tidal zone up through rivers and trout streams to glacial lakes. The commentary on the evolution and stagnation of fly design in the first chapter alone are priceless, to those who seek to seek to imagine the timeless struggles of life below the surface.

With the vast and somewhat ridiculous glut of fly fishing books currently available, finding an honest, clearly understandable and sage guide may seem more difficult than landing one of Skue's day's of 5 brace of 3+lb wild brown trout. But beyond the finer works of Sy Nemes, Gary Borger and David Hughes, this work synthesizes a wealth of new tying techniques with cogent natural observation and clear theoretical principles. That is why it is one for the ages, and will forever remain next to Minor Tactics of the Chalkstream, The Art of Tying the Wet Fly on my tying desk.

Bob quickly becomes your friend and mentor , guiding the reader through each tying stage without prior assumption .Personally , and I,m sure for most readers , this book sets trains of thought in motion . What more could a fly tier want ?

                                            #5: KISS

I've heard that you can learn everything you want to know about a man's heart through just one kiss. We'll see about that.

It all began in a funky brownstone on Perry Street where Gaia Moore lived with her foster family. But Gaia's little Village was brimming with people hell-bent on her own destruction, and her efforts to stay safe took her from parkside chess tournaments to greasy spoons, from the posh Upper East Side to scuzzy college dorm rooms. Along the way she managed to pick up a skate rat, a beauty queen, a hottie reformed school nerd, a recovered punk-rocker, and even a Soviet junior detective. None of whom turned out to be what he or she originally seemed....

Now, in one volume, keep pace with Gaia's latest adventures and revisit the origins of her unique story!

                                            #29: LUST

The good news: we found my dad. The bad news: he's in Siberia. The good news: I'm going there to free him. The bad news: Loki's coming with me. The good news: I finally get to see him. The bad news:
I have to tell him his girlfriend tried to kill me.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2003-09-11

The new Fearless book "Lust" was extremely good. It's odd seeing Gaia working together with Oliver/Loki. It's amazing how quickly he has gone from good guy to bad guy. I also thought it was fun to see the escape methods in Siberia. This book was slightly different from the other ones, which is what made it so good. Ed's still leading Kai on, which is really mean of him to do, and Gaia's a walking pile of confliction between Oliver, Jake, Sam, and a lot of other things. This book didn't have as big a cliffhanger as most of the other ones have had, but that's fine with me! The thing that kept me on the edge of my seat is the wondering about Oliver slipping back into Loki, which is the biggest threat so far! I do reccommend reading "Before Gaia" if you read this because knowing some of the information and characters in it can help you figure out who has kidnapped Tom.
