The classical restricted three-body problem is of fundamental importance because of its applications in astronomy and space navigation, and also as a simple model of a non-integrable Hamiltonian dynamical system. A central role is played by periodic orbits, of which many have been computed numerically. This is the second volume of an attempt to explain and organize the material through a systematic study of generating families, the limits of families of periodic orbits when the mass ratio of the two main bodies becomes vanishingly small. We use quantitative analysis in the vicinity of bifurcations of types 1 and 2. In most cases the junctions between branches can now be determined. A first-order approximation of families of periodic orbits in the vicinity of a bifurcation is also obtained. An outstanding book........2005-03-28

Perhaps, if you could afford to go anywhere on earth for your holidays, you might consider buying a copy of this book. Then you could spend the rest of your life's vacations visiting the 52 most outstanding natural wonders that the earth is able to provide.

My only disappointment was with trying to marry the word "Atlas" in the book's title with the content. By it's very definition, any Atlas is a book of maps or charts and this is the first time I have ever picked up anything claiming to be an Atlas where there are "NO" maps whatsoever. Not one. Secondly, the 52 chosen sites are put together in no apparent order - logical or otherwise. For example, in successive chapters we visit Ayers Rock in Australia, Mount Fuji in Japan and then it's all the way back to Australia for the Great Barrier Reef. More preferable would have been to depict each of the sites in question as a number shown on a map of the world - and then to visit each of those numbers in turn as though it were a single journey.

Nevertheless, this is still a first class book which - but for a slight lacking in organisation, could so easily have scored a full 5 stars. The content is still there, the outstanding photographs are still there and so are the facts surrounding an incredible selection of places.

A good explanation of the philosophy and intent of Tai Chi.......2007-01-10

This book has less to do with the physical part of Tai Chi practice and more of the history and philosophy of the art. The author explains such concepts as Chi, Jing, and their uses for martial arts applications. The Tai Chi classics are translated here with explanation and additional comments. I found these first sections of the book especially useful. The book concludes with a description of the form - but I do not recommend learning Tai Chi from a book; seek out a qualified instructor.

Tai Chi Internal work.......2006-11-03

This book contains very important notes on internal work.
For me, they cover some "blind spots" wich I can not find in
numerous other Tai Chi sources.
It is one of the best Tai Chi books!!!

Great book, but read his other one first...........2005-11-09

While this is a great translation of the classics, and has a good history and perspective on Taichi, the jump into cultivating and applying Jing is fairly advanced. I recommend reading his new book "Chi-How to Feel Your Life Energy" first, and then Taichi Classics...whether you are a beginner or advanced practitioner. Why? Because in it, he gives a thorough overview of Chi, where it comes from, how Taichi helps strengthen and purify life energy, and why this is important for health and spiritual development, and also discusses applications of Chi -- such as martial arts and healing-- . These fundamental yet profound concepts will give you a better feel for the internal art perspective Liao is coming from. His newer books, even Nine Nights With a Taoist Master, are available here now, so you don't have to go through insiders or other websites to get them. Just do a search on this site.

Some useful commentaries.......2005-08-18

After a brief consideration of the history and origins of tai chi, the author proceeds to explicate the most important principles of tai chi through a presentation of the three most important tai chi classics, along with modern commentary written by the author. I found his elaborations on the more condensed and sometimes cryptic sentences and paragraphs in the original classics very helpful, and in fact, most of the text in these chapters is actually his, not the classics themselves. The chapter on jin theory and its many types and their nature and applications was also excellent.

Ultimately, no book on tai chi can really capture its full essence and complexity but this book I thought did a good job of trying to explain it in understandable terms. The author's explanations and claims about the physics weren't always correct, and one has to take with a grain of salt the idea that ch'i can travel faster than light, but then I don't expect tai chi instructors to be that knowledgeable on western physics. It's just the way it is. (As I am a western trained scientist I can figure that part out for myself). But the author's treatment of the other aspects of tai chi was much better in my humble opinion and I enjoyed the book for that.

The essence of Tai Chi from a *true* master.......2005-07-09

SIMPLY, ONE OF THE 3 BEST BOOKS ON ORIGINAL TAI CHI AND INTERNAL POWER I'VE EVER FOUND.

(The other 2 best books are Master Liao's recent works which just became widely available in '05. For example, his "Nine Nights with a Taoist Master--DSE" was life-transforming and practice-transforming. But reading this "Tai Chi Classics" essentially set the stage for me .)

Tai Chi Classics gives one the definitions and conceptual understanding needed to grasp the energy dynamics of Tai Chi. (The acutal Tai Chi forms are best learned person-to-person in classes from a qualified teacher or second-best via a video.) It covers the roots of Tai Chi in Taoist wisdom, the actions of the Yin and Yang powers, and the processes for developing one's Chi, refining it into Jing, and applying it in various ways, such as transfer power.

The core of the book is perhaps the best part. In addition to providing English translations of the three classic texts of Tai Chi, it offers insightful commentary on each passage---written by one who has practiced & experienced these things (as opposed to, say, commentary by a linguistic scholar who has never practiced Tai Chi). Highly Recommended.

This book is a pocket-sized slice of Asian wisdom, succinctly covering the history of Chinese internal martial arts, an explanation of chi theory, some basic internal exercises, and a few excerpted "Tai Chi Classics" by revered masters of the art.

Beginners, dabblers, and advanced students could do worse than spend a few bucks on this book; it costs next to nothing, yet it contains genuine, expert advice in a concentrated form. Good stuff.

A great balance to the physical form.......2001-08-03

This is a wonderful summary of Tai Chi Classics by the same author. My Sifu spoke very highly of Waysun Liao as well as Marshall Ho'o, who's works are also available through Amazon. This book, exactly as it's title says, is the essence of the internal martial art of Tai Chi. As a beginner, I have found it a great companion to the physical aspect of the form. If you are serious about the art/philosophy of Tai Chi, then this is a perfect travel version of an even greater book.

I have read this book and it is a fascinating book to read. I first read it when i was learning tai chi and it help me improve my practice alot. I gave this book only four stars becasue it didnt have more pages to read. But is was very insiteful.

"Death's Door: Modern Dying and the Ways We Grieve" is a splendid achievement and a fine companion for the "Inventions of Farewell: A Book of Elegies." I believe the elegies collection gave birth to "Death's Door."

Gilbert combines clarity and compassion, an essential combination to bring to the ultimate topic: death. The book is divided into three major parts: I. Arranging My Mourning: Five Meditations on the Psychology of Grief; II. History Makes Death: How the Twentieth Century Reshaped Dying and Mourning; II. The Handbook of Heartbreak: Contemporary Elegy and Lamentation. From this selection of categories alone, you can savor her ear for phrase and mind that adventures and gathers together psychology, History, and Literature.

Gilbert is woman and scholar and teacher and writer in this magnificent book. I read "Death's Door" as my mother lay dying and found much comfort here. I received the additional benefit of having the context of my own work illuminated and enlarged.

Sandra M. Gilbert's "Death's Door: Modern Dying and the Ways We Grieve" gave me a context to place my work within. "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary" fits into a tradition I was not consciously aware of as I wrote. I felt I had come home into a larger family with many voices.

We humans are the only animals that know we are going to die. The only real questions are how and when. For Ms. Gilbert's husband, he went in for a relativly minor operation and never recovered.

We use a lot of euphemisms to refer to death: a hit, a contract, passing away, crossing Jordan. And through the twentieth century we have seen a lot of death: World War I with its machine guns and poison gas, The Holocaust (In capitals, that means the jewish one in Germany, but there have been several from Turkey/Armenia, Cambodia, 'ethnic cleansing,' and the current Darfur situation.), Natural disasters from tsunamis, earthquakes, and of course 9/11.

There's been a lot of literature about death, from the Bible through Shakespeare to numerous others (Amazon lists hundreds of titles). This particular book has two real strengths: First comes from Ms. Gilbert's mastery of the language and her analysis of her own feelings of grief. Then there is a carefully made selection of quotes from past literature.

I don't know that this makes our own future any more clear, but it certainly helps in the understanding of our grief when a loved one dies.
