The Soul of an Organization: Understanding the Values That Drive Successful Corporate Cultures
ASIN: 1567204368 |
Book Description
This book draws on studies that quantify the link between individual development and organizational value creation. Strengthening this link is key to building a strong sense of affiliation and a more productive workforce. The author provides frameworks for characterizing the workforce, listening to the organization, using inclusion as a key differentiator, and applying mathematical modeling techniques to explore and quantify related areas. We are entering an era when it makes sense to move away from mere retention strategies of control and toward more mutually beneficial strategies of affiliation. This trend can be traced to the recognition of the knowledge worker's influence and the value of human capital in today's economy. To succeed in this emerging work world, organizational leaders and human resource professionals must create new relationships with individuals built around the concept of affiliation. This will mean changed roles and behaviors that respect mutual interests, and will require a culture of inclusion expressed internally through workforce diversity, externally through workforce partnerships, at a community level through philanthropy, and globally through the pursuit of a greater good.
Customer Reviews:
Better than the title.......2002-11-25
A friend saw this book, Affiliation in the Workplace, on my desk, and commented to me, "That's not the kind of book I would expect you to be reading." That's true. The title conjures up a variety of visions. However, the book is not an irrelevant academic treatise, it isn't about dating people at work, and it isn't advocating a blind faith proposition that treating employees well will result in wonderful benefits for an organization. The secondary title, Value Creation in the New Organization, comes closer to expressing the focus of the book for me: Thoughtful approaches for strategizing and then maximizing the impact of people. In short, Elsdon makes a business case for the value of developing and retaining people.
The book is targeted to leaders and senior HR strategists. You don't need to go to Chapter Six which is chock full of calculus and models to realize this is something different. Also, there are no overly simplistic answers provided, no silver bullets that any organization can employ. Elsdon clearly points out that many variables determine what solution is best, such as the type of business (people or capital intensive), the life stage of the organization (Early Growth or Maturity), etc. He tells you which approaches may be most appropriate, given the characteristics of your organization and workforce.
Basically, the book suggests that organizations choose wisely when defining the relationship that they want to have with their employees. He points out that in many cases we are paying a large price for the "free agent" mentality that has been fueled by many recent organization practices, such as downsizing. However, we cannot in most cases go back to traditional, paternalistic relationships either. He argues for an energetic, inspiring work environment coupled with employee participation and strong support for focused employee development. This will in turn result in the broad-based creative and intellectual contributions that are required from employees today together with organization commitment and increased employee retention. It will help create what he describes as a "highly efficient internal job market."
This really is an interesting book, and you can "get through it" relatively quickly. I recommend it to anyone charged with making the most of an organization's human resources.
A Must Read for Leaders of Organizations.......2002-11-13
Leaders of successful organizations in the next century will need to understand and implement the priciples contained in this outstanding book.
The author sets forth concepts that challenge current thinking about how to lead successful and competitive organizations. But he does much more. What makes this a significant work is clear-cut demonstration of value. Implementation of these concepts will become increasingly important as baby boomers retire in the next few years; organizations that learn how to build workforce affiliation will attract and retain human assets and will be more successful.
Dr. Ron Elsdon has already been awarded the Human Resource Planning Society's Walker Prize for advancing state-of-the-art thinking in human resources. This book clearly advances thinking about how to be successful in leading organizations in the next century.

Book Description
Biological control is among the most promising methods for control of pests (including vectors), diseases and weeds. In this book ecological and societal aspects are for the first time treated together. In an ecological approach the aim is to evaluate the significance of certain biological properties like biodiversity and natural habitats. Also, it is important to see biological control from an organic (or ecological) farming point of view. In a societal approach terms like ‘consumer’s attitude’, ‘risk perception’, ‘learning and education’ and ‘value triangle’ are recognised as significant for biological production and human welfare.

Book Description
The study of orbits in dynamical systems and the theory of order and chaos has progressed enormously over the last few decades. It thus became an essential tool in dynamical astronomy. The book is the first to provide a general overview of order and chaos in dynamical astronomy. The progress of the theory of chaos has a profound impact on galactic dynamics. It has even invaded celestial mechanics, since chaos was found in the solar system which in the past was considered as a prototype of order. The book provides a unifying approach to these topics from an author who has spent more than 50 years of research in the field. The first part treats order and chaos in general. The other two parts deal with order and chaos in galaxies and with other applications in dynamical astronomy, ranging from celestial mechanics to general relativity and cosmology. This book, addressing especially the astrophysics, is also written as a textbook on dynamical systems for students in physics.

After watching a figure-skating performance, do you ever wonder what just happened on the ice? The skater supposedly executed a flawless double Salchow and triple Lutz, among other things, and then the judges posted a bunch of numbers. Maybe you need help from the Dummies. Written by 1992 Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi (with a foreword by Scott Hamilton), Figure Skating for Dummies is a primer for spectators and would-be skaters alike. Learn the lingo, understand the judging practice, and--if you're really committed--embark on a practical training schedule in hopes of performing your own double-toe loops and triple axels.
Book Description
Twirl and spin your way into the artistic and high-precision world of figure skating with none other than Kristi Yamaguchi, 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist and former amateur winner of thirteen titles, including two consecutive World Championships. Whether you love skating around the rink or you're a fan of the sport and never miss a live or televised skating event, Kristi Yamaguchi's
Figure Skating For Dummies covers all the important topics, including Finding the right equipment (from boots to skates) that fits your budget Selecting a practice rink and choosing a choreographer to compose movements to enhance your performances Picking a great coach and getting the most from your lessons Discovering the lowdown on the secret world of figure skating judges; what they look for in a performance and how they themselves qualify to be judges Deciphering what those scores mean and how a 5.5 score can beat a 5.8 score Finding out the requirements for passing each test offered by the U.S. Figure Skating Association Best of all,
Figure Skating For Dummies gives you the inside scoop about ways to improve and enhance your performance, and even lets you in on Kristi's personal conditioning program -- the one she used to win the Gold Medal in the 1992 Winter Olympics!
Customer Reviews:
The best FS book I've read.......2007-08-03
I wasted a lot of money on figure skating books prior to buying this one. This book includes everything you need to know if you are a skating parent or are new to figure skating. A lot of books either speak to you as though you are an idiot or they are too advanced. This book is just right and packs EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about FS into an easy-to-read and enjoyable format. Buy this one first, you won't need to waste your money on other books.
Awesome book! Very well written by a champ!.......2006-05-12
This book was not only extremely informative but it was written with a fun, light tone that made reading enjoyable. Everything was very user friendly and never, at any given time, was I slightly confused or bored. Great book for skaters (because secrets are revealed) and non-skaters (who always wondered about the names of things, how certain moves are done, etc.).
Dummies?.......2006-02-15
The title might just as well be "Ice skating for aspiring professionals." In any case, a wonderful book about skating, well written and clear. I saw the chart on the Axel and thought, "Oh! It's just a waltz jump with a full turn at the end. Wow! I can do that!" Fortunately, I haven't attempted that yet. I'd have to be a dummy to try. Knees are nice. (BTW I'm well over 13 y.o.)
Good reading, although the judging system has changed.......2004-08-16
This is a great book for fans of the sport, but especially those armchair fans who know nothing about the elements but want to appreciate the finer points of this lovely sport. An explanation of the jumps and spins, plus how a program is put together and an overview of the rules, make this an entertaining and useful tool.
Figure Skating For Dummies.......2002-07-12
I am a skater my self and This book has helped me to lear how to do my jumps and spins better. If you like skating and want to lear how to skate, or if you are just starting I would recommed theis book.It tells you how to chose the righ skate for you and It tells you how to do jump and spins. Its a verry good book all aobut skating from some one who has been skating their hole life.

Praise for Gerald Hausman.......2004-01-24
Gerald Hausman is one of Americas greatest living writers and a glorious human being. It is not by imagination alone, nor skill, that makes a great writer. It is also the spirit that resides within the writer and the experiences that make up a writer's life. In the case: spirit, experience, vision, along with a good mixture of imagination make Hausman a master of the writer's craft. Read his work. Enjoy his talent. See the world from his view, and learn.
The Coyote Bead.......2001-08-28
The Coyote Bead, by Gerald Hausman, is a book for Young Adults. It's the story of a young Navajo boy who survived an attack on his people by the "blue coats" (U.S. federal forces sent to relocate them). Not only must he escape from the blue coats, he's also pursued by Two-Face, a Ute Indian bent on destroying him. The boy, Tobachischin, has only the contents of his grandfather's magic pouch with which to defend himself. These include an arrow straightener, a horsehair whip, a porcupine quill comb, some red powder, and a blue bead called the coyote bead. Each item has been invested with powerful magic, and each, in turn, saves Tobachischin from death. The coyote bead must be reunited with a white coyote bead, carried by Two-Face. Tobachischin must therefore meet face-to-face with his powerful enemy. When the meeting takes place, Tobachischin uses his courage and cunning to defeat Two-Face. He then continues on his quest to live in the mountains with the remnants of his people. The story is a retelling of the near-destruction of the Navajo people and their renewal. They practice a coyote beadway ceremony, designed to "balance the opposing energies of peace and violence, harmony and war." The Navajo recovered from the devastating losses imposed upon them by the blue coats and are today a thriving nation. Although Coyote Bead is written for young adults, I think its meant for people of all ages, as I'm in the fifth decade of my life, and the story entranced me. Hausman is a skilled and exceptionally poetic writer. His work can be savored simply for good storytelling, as well for a personal understanding of a tragic event in American history.

A family tale of the Dineh, The Coyote Bead retells a heroic battle between the boy Tobachischin and his lethal enemy, Two-Face, the Ute bounty hunter killer incarnation of Coyote, the trickster god. The factual, sparse graceful prose style underlines the terrifying and bloody conflict of evil and good. Hausman's writing quivers and reverberates with underlying song power magic. The bravery of Tobachischin and his protective shaman Grandfather are contrasted with the evil cowardice of the Blue Coats (eeyoni) and their minions the Utes, who brutally murder and herd the Dineh on a 350 mile forced march to Fort Sumner, New Mexico, from Canyon Del Muerto, Arizona. Many Dineh died. This is a tale of a heroic few who survived and used the sacred land and animal helpers to build a new identity despite their pain and suffering. The Coyote Bead is beautifully written for young adults.
