Stevenson's _Humus Chemistry_ is THE source on soil organic matter (SOM), namely humic substances. It played an instrumental role as a reference in support of my masters thesis. I would recommend the book highly to anyone taking a course and/or with a serious interest in any aspect of SOM.

NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) was launched on August 25, 1997, carrying six high-resolution spectrometers that measure the abundances of the elements, isotopes, and ionic charge states of energetic nuclei in space. Data from these instruments is being used to measure and compare the composition of the solar corona, the nearby interstellar medium, and cosmic-ray sources in the Galaxy, and to study particle acceleration processes in a variety of environments. ACE also includes three instruments that monitor solar wind and energetic particle activity near the inner Lagrangian point, "1.5 million kilometers sunward of Earth, and provide continuous, real-time data to NOAA for use in forecasting space weather. This book offers a little bit of basic, medium and advanced techniques and will certainly help sailors that are willing to achieve better places on races. In spite of its age (issued on 1983) it offers concepts that are still being practiced by sailors all over the world.

Sailing Smart is smart sailing.......2006-11-03

I have been sailing for 20 years and had prided myself on becoming a pretty good sailor. My family and I have been on sailing vacations in the BVI, sail off-shore of Charleston, SC and enjoy weekend boat camping. Then, last year, I joined a weekend racing crew and found out I didn't know as much as I thought I did. We finished dead last in our first two races. My pride was bruised but I asked around the club and the resource most recommended was Sailing Smart by Melges.

This book is a gold mine. Buddy Melges lays out his wealth of experience and sailing knowledge in clear, easy to understand examples and tips. Understanding the little tweaks to make in any given situation improved our racing and my family sailing as well. We now arrive at our favorite gunk hole earlier and ended the season 8th out of 19.

Racing Skipper's Must Have.......2006-06-28

This review refers to "Sailing Smart" By Buddy Melges and Charles Mason...

Sailing season is in full swing. Day sailors, live aboards and racers are taking to the water, and although there is something to be gotten from this read for all of the above mentioned, this is a must read and geared towards racing sailors, and particularly Skippers. It is not a book for beginners, or those wanting to learn how to sail. A good knowledge of boating and sailing terms, and hands on experience is practically a prerequisite.It's for those serious about the sport.For those looking for more along the lines of help with the basics, I would recommend "Basic Sailing"(Diana Jessie) or "Sailing Fundamentals(Gary Jobson). These are both a great help, have glossaries and will prepare you for your certification test. See my reviews if interested. If you are completely new, hands-on lessons are a must.

"Sailing Smart" is an excellent look at what it takes for racers to become champions. It's a treasure chest of advice from a champion. It's a read that you will not only find extremely helpful, but one that is so well written and interesting to racers, that you can read it straight through the first time around, and use it often to refer back to and practice(practice, practice) for specific maneuvers.

Melges will take you from the beginning; preparing yourself and your crew, mentally and physically,preparing your equipment, understanding the elements, tactics for every leg of the race from the starting point to the finish, and some wonderful reflections on racing and winning. Every detail, no matter how small is talked about, and readiness for every situation that may occur is stressed. There are times when inches may make a difference, and this book will help you gain them. You will also find many illustrations, so you can visualize the maneuvers talked about.

This book is nearly 20 years old. Sure there is new equipment coming out all the time, but "Sailing Smart" is just that. Smart Sailing! Learning to work with mother nature, getting the most from your sails, getting just the shape you need to pick up some speed, these things will never be out of date.

A must have for every Skipper's library.(also a good read for crew members as well).I think even the very experienced can gain from the read. Just reading it through the first time will have you wanting to get involved in a race, and practicing the maneuvers, learning to read the wind will build your confidence as well.

If you think about sailing all the time, this book is for you. After the read, you will not be able to think of anything else!

I enjoyed this book and recommend it. Buddy Melges tells the reader what he is considering all the way around an olympic race course. This is a practitioners style of writting without the fluff. He tells you how and why and then moves on to the next phase of the race course. Learn the secrets and steepen your learning curve.

Thumbs Down if you are a serious traveler.......2004-07-27

I thought I was getting a 'real' map ... unfold it, spread it out on the kitchen table type Big map with details. Not the case. The actual Map dimensions of Beijing and surrounding area, when unfolded, is ONLY 9 in. x 11 3/8 in. Only 1 in. bigger than standard print paper.

There are MORE streets WITHOUT names than there are with. Then on the other side is the same size Blow up of Central Bejing.. Small! Again, not good on details. A magnifying glass is needed to find most of the other sights that Lonely planet did put on the map..... but then there no names of the streets to be able to find the sights .. only larger streets are listed.

I only give it 3/4 of a star for showing the Subway stops with their name.
I give them 2/4 of a star for laminating. There just wasn't much to laminate.

Convenient and Durable Though a Bit Dated.......2004-03-07

As one who just returned from four years in the city and is planning to return in a few months, I began a futile search for a completely updated map of Beijing and found this one. The search proved futile because the map makers always seem to be at least 2-4 years behind the times, which in Beijing time is like a decade or more in the States. Keep in mind that this map, while useful, reflects this time lag. For example, it does not show Ping An Li, a major east-west running street northwest of the city center, as a continuation of Dianmen to the east, which runs by Beihai Lake. Instead, it indicates that hutongs (alley streets) intervene. To be fair, none of the other maps depict this accurately either (and this street has been in this expanded form for at least 6 years).

However, this map is laminated, which will allow it to last much longer in a city where fine sand sometimes prevails and grime often works its way into everything. Moreover, it is user-friendly because all of the locations are in a combination of English and Pinyin and the layout enables both to be easier to read (especially in poorly lit taxis). For the sake of taxicab drivers (and users who cannot pronounce Pinyin), it would be even more helpful if it also included Chinese characters of major roadways, etc. Still, the inset maps of major tourist sites are nice and convenient and it's durable laminated surface makes it easy to open and close when you're in a hurry. Recommended.

Typical LP map - very handy for planning a first trip.......2003-06-02

If you're off to Beijing for the first time, then this map is for you. The bicycle tour is the best part and the map is pretty comprehensive with most of the touristy things you'd like to see on a map. The map is typical of most LP maps but lacks a Metro map which would be handy to have. Of course, use this map in conjunction with a good Beijing city guide and a Metro map, and you're all set.

Controversial and award-winning British author Melvin Burgess (Smack, Bloodtide, etc.) is in fine form in his brilliant, satirical novel about a hedonistic teenage girl who is turned into a dog by a mysteriously magical town drunk. Sandra (a.k.a. Lady) is dismayed at first, but quickly discovers the pure joys of unfettered freedom to do whatever she wants and have sex with whomever she pleases--a seemingly perfect scenario for a devil-may-care young woman who would "have shagged [Wayne] up against the wall for a bag of jelly beans a month ago."

Hooking up with a couple other humans-turned-dogs, Lady roams the streets and, well, does what doggies do: "One thing about dogs--they know how to greet someone. It's not so much scratch and sniff as sniff and lick--as soon as you see someone, you just gotta know what they taste like!" Her new life is not without inner turmoil, however. Part of her longs to return to her human life, annoying family, standardized school testing, boy-of-the-day "romances," and all. Living as a dog helps her study what it means to live as a human--with the responsibilities, silly inhibitions, stress, and worry that mark that species--but also the flip side: the security and love of her family.

Ultimately the decisions Sandra/Lady makes may be shocking, but Burgess's voice is undeniably, ruthlessly authentic. Readers in search of a traditionally moralistic diatribe against the reckless promiscuity of today's youth will need to look elsewhere. But those seeking a funny, sensual, and honest exploration of real teenage life and a much more intense and complex study of humanity will revel in the author's expertly crafted allegory. As Burgess himself says, "even someone who doesn't know what an allegory is will recognize that Lady is not a piece of advice, or a suggestion on how to govern your life; it's simply a way of trying to make people think about the ways in which we define work and play." An other great novel from Burgess.......2007-05-05

Once again Melvin Burgess captures my imagination. This was really great read. I couldnt put it down. The ending is totally not what I expected but expect from Burgess. I think the lesson with this novel is to live your life the way you want it.

Could have been so much better..........2006-10-25

The concept behind this book is great, but it was a dry and boring read. Instead of exploring many different things a dog might think or experience, the author just revisited a couple of different ideas over and over again.

This book is NOT for young teens! Very snappy read, very hip and really, really funny. Bittersweet story with the right ending- not sentimental, not moralistic, just plain fun. I read it straight through.

A bargain.

Wow not what I thought.......2004-11-16

Lady My Life as a Bitch by Melvin Burgess dealt with many teenage issues such as teenage love, independence from family, and behavior. The title refers to a girl named Sandra who becomes a dog named Lady. Sandra wants to be independent and is almost in control of her risqué life. One day while out with her current boyfriend, Sandra encounters a homeless alcoholic. When she accidentally knocks over his beer, the alcoholic changes her into a dog, which is what she deserves according to some, the way she lives her life.

Frightened and not sure what has happened Lady as she is mow called runs to her house where her mom screams, calls the police, and tries to shoo her out of the house. When Lady sees herself in a mirror she truly realizes what has happened to her. That night in a shack she meets two dogs, Mitch and Fella who were also turned into dogs by the neighborhood drunk. They explain the situation in between sniffing. They also explain how great being a dog can be the pleasures of running all night and chasing cats.

Although being a dog is great Sandra does miss her family and goes one day to see them. With her dog memory she can only just remember them. Sandra carefully sneaks into her old room and puts some of her old clothes on and creeps downstairs. What will her parents think? Will they believe their beloved daughter presumed missing or dead is alive in the body of a dog? Will she ever be herself again? Read this to book to find out.

Stupid.......2004-11-05

I had read many exciting reviews and great comments about this book and was looking forward to reading it. I ended up being very disappointed. At certain times the novel was so exaggerated , girl turning into dog, girl going to her house and her family somehow recognizing it was their daughter...as a dog, a dog walking down the stairs with a skirt & lipstick. It seemed as if the writer was trying too hard to make this story funny. It's also very pointless and stupid and the ending is completely unexpected. Throughtout the book I had to reassure myself that this wasn't a childen's book but when I came upon the sexual parts I got my answer. I thought it was a big waste of time and a completely pointless storyline.
