Usually, books on the subject of experimental soil mechanics focus on laboratory procedures. This book, however, goes well beyond the procedures (which are neatly explained and illustrated with high quality photographs) and provides tools to process the resulting data with the help of common computer software.

Those two features could be enough to make it an excellent choice for a textbook in experimental soil mechanics, but the author gives much more than that. The book provides the complete and solid theoretical background for each one of the experiments, such as the consolidation theory, the analysis of stresses in a soil mass, and the foundations of the strength of soils, etc., before introducing the respective test procedures. This is a very useful reference for teachers and students and very effective as a way to link theory and experiment.

Besides all that, the book includes a detailed compilation of data about the soil properties that are studied in each experiment, common empirical correlations with other parameters or properties (with a critical point of view), and exercises with real case data.

These proceedings are a continuation of the series of International Conferences in Germany entitled "Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils." The primary objective is to discuss and understand unsaturated soil behaviour such that engineered activities are made better with times in terms of judgement and quality. We all realise by now that in addition to the knowledge on the classical concepts, it becomes an enormous challenging task to adapt convincing new concepts and present them in such a way that it could be used in engineering practices.

The experimental studies reported primarily focus on the role of microstructure and fabric for the complex coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of cohesive frictional materials. Several papers consider the relevance of temperature affecting the constitutive behaviour of clays. Common features of state of the art theoretical and numerical approaches, including theory of porous media and mixture theory, intend to describe the complex multi-field problems of fully coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical initial - boundary value problems. Applications include highly toxic waste disposals, slope stability problems and contaminants transport in porous media.

If you want the best book on Herbs,try Culpepper's book instead.This book is charming to a point.It has the complete list of all well-known herbs and uses.Yet,there too brief and not very weighty in content.The references come from out-dated herbal source books that can not be so easy to verify.So,i withheld one star here.Yet,the knowledge presented is credible and useful. There are many interesting old pictures and illustrations throughout the book.There are many biblical names and meanings given also,such as the Balm of Giliad,Dragon's Blood,St.John's bread,devil's bite,shepards purse,etc.The bible phrases and biblical names are used so the average layreader can understand them.The bible being the number one source-book in the lives of the masses of yesterday's colonial frontier people. Also presented are various Indian herbal stories,native herbs and recipes for use.The settlers that adapted some of the Indians growing customs prospered and the others faired not as well.I guess you could say it is very similar to an 'Herbal Guidebook from the Old Farmer's Almanac'.This is another way of looking at the folk-history of global herbal use.In this day and age of quick man-made chemical otc drugs,this does give the reader a bonding healthier alternative through Earth's natural herbs.

Basic Course in American Sign Language Review.......2007-02-17

The book I ordered was exactly what I expected it to be, an educational resource.

What I was very, very, very dissappointed with was the shipping process at Amazon. Amazon offered free shipping on the item, but instead of shipping the item as soon as possible, the item sat in the warehouse for more than a week. The shipping information was sent to the post office, but the merchandise was delayed.

I felt that this was very inconsiderate on Amazon's part. If you are going to offer free shipping to attract customers, don't penalize them for not paying for faster shipping and delay the order. I will NOT order from Amazon again.

Good but not near as good as "The Joy of Signing".......2006-11-13

I ordered this book for the class I was taking. I like the spiral binding as it makes it easier to work with. However I don't think it is all that well-organized. It would be better if all the related signs were presented together. For example, food in one section, travel in another. I think the biggest problem is that there are no word descriptions on how to make a certain sign or reasoning behind the sign which helps a great deal when trying to remember it. I found a good sign language dictionary and the book " The Joy of Signing" and they are, in my opinion, the best resources for learning sign language.

This is a great book to buy if you want to learn ASL. Not only do you learn basic vocabulary but this book also teaches sentence structure for ASL. It's a fantasic way to learn how to communicate with those in Deaf culture.

Basic ASL.......2006-03-21

A great resource and one that I feel as though I will keep for a long time. The spiral binding makes it easy to use and to keep handy to look up words. I have one criticism...the vocabulary pages follow the practice pages which is backwards. Since I used this text for a class, the instructor always presented the vocab first, so it would have been nice to have the book set up that way as well. That being said, was well worth the price!

This study guide is a great tool to use with A Basic Course in American Sign Language. It reinforces each lesson, reviews and incorporates previous lessons. I took an ASL course using these two books and have gone back to the study guide many times to review lessons.
