Not Just Any Quote Book! THIS ONE IS AMAZING!.......2004-08-16

I confess, I like quote books. I even have my own blank book that I've filled with quotes over the years. Well, FOR GIRLS ONLY is like a gold mine!!! I'm not kidding, it has around 500 GREAT quotes that aren't the usual ones we've all already heard. I don't know where Carol Weston gets them, but she has great quotes from poets, singers, celebs, and some people that I thought I alone had discovered. It's just a great mix. I always liked her "Dear Carol" column in Girls Life, so I like having all her own advice under each quote. I mean, I grew up reading her novels and column, so I trust her. I read one page of FOR GIRLS ONLY every morning and I also go to it whenever I get mad or depressed or whatever. It gets me in a better mood because it gives me a new way to look at things. I gave this book to everyone who came to my last birthday party and it got us into some really good conversations. I recommend GIRLTALK too, but since I'm into quotes, I wanted to review this one. Get For Girls Only! You'll be glad you did!!!

TOTALLY INSPIRING!!!.......2004-08-06

I love how this book is full of excellent advice that I can read whenever I'm feeling confused or depressed. I am a big fan of Carol Weston's "Dear Carol" column in Girls' Life magazine (and also of her novels) so it's really cool to have her best advice in one book. She also quotes a ton of my favorite musicians, actors, and other writers. Basically, thanks to FOR GIRLS ONLY, even if I've already talked to my mom and best friend about a problem, I still have another place to go for good advice or just to get me motivated to get my work done or try to meet new people or whatever. FOR GIRLS ONLY is FOR YOU!!!

This book is Helen Nearing's personal collection of astute quotations on various topics relating to homesteading and simple living. The topics are grouped into chapters, including: the rewards of country living, frugality and economy, weather and the seasons, gardening and the soil, woodlots and fire-making, money and true wealth, and solitude and contentment. Within each chapter, the quotations are organized chronologically according to when they were first published. Authors of quotations range from the well-known, such as Cicero, Shakespeare, and Thoreau, to others who have been forgotten or obscured by time. William Alcott makes a number of appearances in this book, as do Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Frank Lloyd Wright. To help you locate quotes by author, there is an index of authors' names at the end of the book.

Great words cover every page in this book. I would love to hang a selection of them on my refrigerator for prominent display every day, starting with "Men dig their Graves with their own Teeth and die more by those fatal instruments than the Weapons of their Enemies."-Thomas Moffett, Helth's Improvement (1590). One fact that becomes clear from reading this book is how long a history the philosophy of simplicity has in our culture. Ben Franklin reminds us "With frugality, there will be no lack; with extravagance, there's never enough." Later on, Frank Lloyd Wright points out "Many wealthy people are little more than the janitors of their possessions." In 1938, Lin Yutang saw simplicity as a movement of the future, arguing "I do not think that any civilization can be called complete until it has progressed from sophistication to unsophistication, and made a conscious return to simplicity of thinking and living."

One fact that struck me while reading this book is how even those who try to live simply today are blessed with a much higher standard of living than was ever imaginable for even the very rich in the past. In the chapter on woodlots and fire-making, a number of quotations refer to the need for conserving wood, using every scrap, and letting the house go cold at night. A proper fire that warmed the whole house could only be lit a few times a year. After all "it took fifty or more cords a year to feed the kitchen fire alone,"-William Reed, Life on the Border, 1882. Fifty cords of wood per year for just a kitchen fire?! Thanks to today's construction techniques and materials, and our modern efficient stoves, it's simple to keep a moderately-sized house (but gigantic by pioneer standards) at 80 degrees 24-hours a day all winter on only 3 cords of wood. Simplicity can be a wonderful blessing as it frees us from unnecessary appliances and possessions. Nevertheless, there are some facets of modern technology that can go a long way in making our lives truly simple.

Great Book, not for beginners.......2006-12-18

As said by the first reviewer, this is a beautiful and well written book. It only has about 12 fly recipes, and each fly is discussed and photographed for many pages. This is not your regular fly tying book with 100-300+ fly recipes.

Mike's flies are amazing, and it's great that he works at a local fly shop where I could ask him questions.

With that said, as amazing as this book is, it is not for beginners. I'm not even sure if it is for intermediate fly tiers. I find the flies difficult to tie and very challenging.

I am not trying to be derogatory about the book. I think the book is amazing, beautiful, and the text is wonderful. Great for begginers to read. But this should not be your first or even tenth fly tying book. It was not made for a beginner, and I'm not sure if it was made for an intermediate fly tier.

There are many great beginner books (I learned by Randall Kaufmann's wonderful books, and Dave Hughes' Trout Flies). If you are an advanced fly tier, then this is a great book.

BTW, I fish many of Mike's flies. Today I will be tying on a Micro Mayfly, but it's not one I tied.

One of the Rare Books That Won't Make You Regret Spending Time Reading Instead of Fishing.......2005-09-04

Those who have known or heard of Mike Mercer and his innovative fly designs have waited a long time for this book. Mercer's all too rare Cal Ripken/Lou Gehrig-esque, quarter century long dedication to his job at the Fly Shop in Redding, California, along with his overwhelming and overriding commitment as husband and father, have left many a fly tyer and fly fisherman who owe their success to his creative inspiration hungry for insights into just how he does it. Despite uncounted articles in virtually every fly angling/tying publication on the newstand; no matter his contributions as a long time "Signature Fly Designer" for Umpqua Feather Merchants (39 patterns in their current catalog by my unscientific count); never mind his all too infrequent, 'standing room only,' personal appearances - it is still common to find fly shop employees and anglers who are great devotees of his creations but either don't know his full name or where he's from. (The biographical "Introduction" goes a great distance in mitigating one's ignorance on this count; not to mention, once again confirming that kids who spend what many adults consider to be a bit too much time knocking around, not taking things 'seriously enough,' can still do great things.)

If you've done any fly fishing worthy of the title in the last 20 years, particularly on waters in Northern California, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, or pick your state, then you have most likely either used, heard of, seen, or been made aware of one or more of the author's patterns. In "Creative Fly Tying," Mike Mercer gives you step-by-step instructions, replete with fantastic color photographs, for twelve of these piscatorial treats: Gold Bead Poxyback Green Drake Nymph, Copper Bead Micro Z-Wing Caddis, Profile Spinner, Rag Sculpin, Micro Mayfly Nymph, Alaska Lemming, PMD Trigger Nymph, Gold Bead Biot Epoxy Golden Stone Nymph, Sac Fry, Rag Hex Nymph, Zebra Midgeling, and Glasstail Caddis Pupa.

To the readers' great joy, this is not merely a "how to," pedantic list of materials with captioned photographs which barely outline the steps involved in recreating his brand of trout candy. Within the total 146 pages of text, 126 pages are dedicated to not only providing detailed instructions, but in giving aspiring tyers a rare glimpse into the often humorous, sometimes serious, but always entertaining stories behind the development of these patterns.

As an example, in his usual, easy going style, Mike tells of the angling excursion which served as the catalyst which set the wheels spinning on the road that led to his now famous Poxyback series. Unlike the typical, dry "I observed this...the insect was this shade, with just a hint of this...consulting with two world class entomology texts" accounts so common in today's tying literature, Mercer starts by describing his approach to the stream that day: "When I voiced my uncertainty to Andy, he just grinned and vanished over the rim of the canyon. Feeling like Alice chasing the Rabbit, I plunged after." [p. 21]

Such sentiments express, as well as anything else could, the feeling fly tyers will have as they plunge into the vast resource this work provides.

Good Beginners Book!.......2005-04-12

I have several books in this series called "The Complete Fly Fisherman." Most of the books, including this one have been very useful to me. I have been fly fishing for about 2+ years.
This book was one of 3 books that I used when I began fly tying. The pictures are clear and instructive (unlike some other books). I often refer to the pattern catalogs when I am trying flies. Only thing I could wish for is for it to be spiral bound so I could open it up when I am tying. Otherwise its a great book. I enjoy this "series" because they have lots of excellent color photos as well as useful information.

A Fly-Tying Must.......2000-04-05

'Fly-Tying Techniques and Patterns' is a wonderful book for beginners; its progression through concepts, tools, materials, basics, and fly patterns is perfect for a first timer. I found the step-by-step color photographs extremely usful and easy to follow, and I love the tips for beginners! All in all, I found 'Fly-Tying Techniques and Patterns (The Complete Fly Fisherman)' well worth my time and money!

This book has only come to my attention in the past week or so and as a Trout Fly Tying Instructor at our local Evening college it has proven a great hit amonst my Students. Some of the comments passed are, "Life cycle section" is clear, concise and as comprehensive as a book of this size can be. "Materials and Tools" this section is clean clear and precise in its coverage of the subject and its photography. The "Steps to Tying" and "The Tying Sections" are also of a high standard of presentation with the unusual use of a dark background to highlight the subect. Followed by the individual sections for Nymphs Wets and Drys etc The layout of this Publication has obviously had a lot of thought and effort put into it and its Authors shuld be congratulated on a job welldone

If you are just getting started at fly tying then this CD-Rom is a must have. It will show you just about everything that you will need to know to tie great flys, and the tools needed to tie them. The videos are one of the best instructional aids you can have for fly tying, and the fly catalog is more than enough for just about any kind of fishing.You will not regreat buying this CD-Rom.

What a great resource.......2000-07-08

This CD really, really helped me to learn to tie flies better. I had minimal instruction, and was trying to teach myself from books. The value of a CD-ROM package is that you can see video demonstrations of many (but unfortunately, not all) the techniques needed to tie flies. The video of how to spin deer hair flies really helped me because I could see how much hair to use, how to pass the thread around the hook shank, and how to pack the hair -- something that is difficult to glean from a written description or picture in a book.

This CD covers only the basic techniques used in fly tying, but does so very well. The different areas are easy to navigate, and you can jump from place to place easily with a click or two of the mouse. The video and still images are clear and large enough to show good detail.

This CD-ROM also has hundreds of fly pattern recipes with a searchable fly pattern index making it a good reference source. However, only a few patterns have "how-to" tying videos from start to finish. Yet, each fly does have instruction on how to perform each generic technique needed to tie the fly.

It's Good, It's Good.......2002-12-24

It's good it's good. Being light weight and small this edition is convenient. Plenty of useful information. The maps are accurate and comprehensive. Consulate information, and arrive/departure info. is good. The central area of Saigon is walkable and you can get some good exercise while seeing local street and shop life while admiring the nice archictecture. Some recent historical notes on what happened where in the city piques the interest. There are many listings in this LP edition for additional reading on Vietnam, and these books can be picked up here in the city, thanks to master copying abilities and black market. Changes are taking place here rapidly, but the communist government remains paranoid
