Book Description
Summary
This booklet gives an overview of the Participative Design Workshop, a change strategy which enables an organization to function in an interrelated structure of self-managing work groups.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description
Two processes help organizations learn about and adapt quickly to environmental changes with plans that will influence that environment. The first process is that Search Conference. In Search Conferences, participants develop strategic goals that establish an active adaptive relationship between system and environment. The second process is the Participative Design Workshop. In the Participative Design Workshop, participants create a structure that leads to increased levels of responsibility and motivation to achieve the strategic goals set in the Search Conference. At the end of a Participative Design Workshop, participants know how to sustain performance improvement.
Participative Design Workshops may be used as a follow-up to a Search Conference to ensure that the active adaptative process is sustainable, or they may be used alone to produce a motivated and productive workforce through redesigned structures.
A Participative Design Workshop is a highly structured and participative process in which people redesign their own organizational structures. It is a comprehensive process during which the people also design in a set of measurable goals, their training requirements for the new design, and other necessities such as how they will cooperate with other groups. These are subsequently negotiated with others before final agreement.
Any organization can use a Participative Design Workshop. A community may use a modified Participative Design Workshop for designing itself an organizational structure. The key element involves systematically relocating responsibility for coordination and control from various levels of supervision and management to the people who perform the work.

Book Description
More and more civil engineering constructions are being built on soft soils. As areas with better foundations are used up the necessity to be able to build structures on soft soils increases.
The most troublesome of soft soils are organic soils due mainly to their high compressibility (much higher than in mineral soils), and also their very low shear strength. The large diversity of organic soils with respect to their origin as well as their properties make classification, testing, and engineering prediction of behaviour, very difficult. For this reason, engineers try, in general, to avoid constructing on deep layers of organic soils. If forced, by necessity, to do so, they manage with light structures e.g. embankments or low buildings.
The authors of this book have been involved in a joint research project on the testing of embankments on organic soils. This was carried out in the North-Western part of Poland by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics of Warsaw Agricultural University.
The results of their research is presented in this new book and provides a valuable insight into this growing area in the field of engineering geology.

Book Description
This book describes a mathematical model of flow past a lifting system performing steady and unsteady motion in close proximity to the underlying solid surface (ground).
The author considers various approximations based on the general method of matched asymptotic expansions applied to lifting flows. Particular importance is attached to the case of extreme ground effects describing very small relative ground clearances. Practitioners involved in the design of wing-in-ground effect vehicles will find in this book all the relevant formulae and calculated data for the prediction of aerodynamic characteristics in this important limiting case. More generally, this book is suitable for graduate students, researchers and engineers working or lecturing in the area of theoretical aerodynamics.

Hardcore Self-defense delves into the subjects of combat psychology, unarmed combat, and the use of weapons. Totally unlike any martial-arts book you've ever seen!
Customer Reviews:
Several Good Ideas for Anyone Interested in Self-Defense .......2006-10-24
"Hardcore Self-Defense" is not your standard self-defense book. There are no pictures or illustrations, and the book is not really intended to teach techniques. What "Hardcore Self-defense" does teach is concepts and principles that will help anyone learn to protect himself or herself from a violent attacker.
"Hardcore Self-defense" also offers numerous tips and ideas for improvised weapons. When I first read the book I found some things (like belt fighting) which seemed like a pretty good idea, and when I practiced them they worked out OK. A couple months later I was looking at "Hardcore Self-defense" again and found a couple more ideas that I liked (adapting large steel washers as a thrown distraction weapon; and the idea of hidden body armor beyond that of the `bulletproof vest'), that again after practice worker out quite well.
There is also a very interesting introduction to knife-fighting, where the author points out some of the finer points of using a knife in combat, such as the need for a longer blade (6+ inches, ala James Keating's American Blade Concepts / Riddle of Steel instruction).
Overall, I found "Hardcore Self-defense" to be a very interesting book with several good ideas for anyone interested in self-defense to consider.
"Strong of mind".......2006-02-27
Very interesting book. . .
Unlike other books in this genre, which seem directed at traditional martial artists or the average civilian, this seems to have been written for a more specialized audience -- those who are already familiar with self-defense, but want to take their knowledge "to the next level".
The bulk of the text seems to be divided into two main categories. First, several aspects of self-defense (i.e., preparedness, rape prevention, combat, and the aftermath) are discused from an abstract psychological perspective that is insightful, intense, and unlike anything else I've ever read. These are intermediate to advanced concepts which, once understood, can improve your chances of survival much more so than the typical collection of "tactics and techniques". Secondly, a significant portion of the book is spent discussing the various types of weapons available -- with great emphasis placed on improvised weapons -- and details the strengths and weaknesses of each, as well as explodes various myths about the "effectiveness" of a number of inferior choices.
This was a very unique book which anyone with a strong interest in the subject is encouraged to read. You WILL learn!
Sorry It simply didn't seem that great to me. Might be useful for some...........2006-01-27
Although I believe it was an honest effort, some of the information was misleading. A few of the authors views were in error as I know from experiance. (i.e. "a knife shorter than 3 inches is BS." I have seen people attacked and severely injured by screwdrivers and knives shorter than that.) There were some good points, and I'm sure that some people who have never been exposed to this will find the section on the use of a belt particularly interesting. Certainly NOT the holy grail of martial arts books though.
High on Quality Content!.......2005-11-07
This title is unique among self-defense books in the fact that it doesn't include hundreds of pictures of a uniform-wearing "instructor" showing traditional martial arts techniques the author claims to be self-defense. In fact, this title is just the opposite. It contains no pictures to distract the reader and instead emphasizes simple but effective self-defense techniques, tactics, and strategies.
It's one of the best books available on this subject.
I like it........2005-02-12
Great book. I use the principles in this book all the time in my self-defense seminars. I found the book to be more thought provoking than technique-orientated, but that's me.

Customer Reviews:
It's... there.......2007-05-07
Having been trained in JKD, I bought this book to maybe reinforce some teachings, or hopefully learn something new.
It makes a nice reference in case I forget the names of some moves, but aside from that, I couldn't really find a good use for it.
Might be a good read for someone a bit newer to the art.
Very good picture flow and explanations of moves.
Okay........2007-04-03
Unlike his older books, this one is more specialized to jkd'ers (& maybe wing chun folks). Also, imo, the techs. shown for dealing with grapplers are not as strong/solid as those shown in his older books, or in material taught in his seminars. Prof. Hartsell is great, but this is not my favorite work of his.
Fine book by one of the greats.......2005-01-31
For those of you who know Mr. Hartsell, he needs no introduction, but he's one of the Lee's original inner circle of JKD students and is also an excellent grappler. So he combines the best of outfighting and infighting techniques in his personal approach. I've never had the chance to train with Mr. Hartsell myself, but I had the opportunity to buy the Wisconsin summer camp training tape featuring him, Danny Innosanto, Paul de Thouars, and Sirisute a few years ago, and it was excellent. So when I saw this book I thought I would check it out.
Mr. Hartsell is no longer a young man and has been doing martial arts for probably 40 years (like me). I like guys like that since after four decades one knows what works and what doesn't, and one can distill the essence of one's art down to the most effective and essential and practical principles. It's fun to do the fancy stuff and moves and combos, and I sometimes show off a little bit too during my workouts and teaching. But when pressed, I resort to simple techniques which will work in almost any situation, but which require a good foundation in the basics.
Mr. Hartsell has done the same in this book about JKD. He is old and wise now in the ways of the fistic arts. As someone once said, "old age and trickery beats youth and strength." Mr. Hartsell presents the main aspects of JKD, from basic techniques to trapping and energy drills, wooden dummy, JKD sparrying, and basic and advanced strategies and tactics. As I said, one thing that impressed me was that he didn't try to write an exhaustive presentation of JKD, but rather has set down the most important concepts and techniques.
One controversial area of JKD and Wing Chun is trapping. As you may know, Lee during his last years decided trapping wasn't as effective as claimed and got away from it, and I even heard he stopped teaching it as part of the standard curriculum, a major change from the early days when trapping was part of the original "Chinatown curriculum." However, Hartsell addresses that issue too. There is a time and place for everything, and many things in the martial arts are situational rather than universal principles, and trapping is one of them, and Hartsell discusses the issues relating to trapping and how to deal with them.
My favorite part of the book was the section on advanced sparring skills and how to deal with various opponients, such as western boxer, wrestler, Thai boxer, streetfighter, and so on. There is some very practical advice here. Lee was nothing if not a profound strategist, and that approach is reflected here in this section.
Finally, there is a nice section showing the intial attack, and proceeding from there to counters, strikes and kicks, holds and chokes, and takedowns, covering the entire sequence of ranges and techniques, and from standing to ground-based arts. Also, there is an appendix done in Question and Answer format where Mr. Hartsell deals with specific questions and issues there, such as "How to cultivate a killer instinct," and more details on strategies for different fighters, such as tall, big, fast, slow, "hit and run fighters," and many other topics.
I had one last piece of advice, which is that if you're a novice this book should be used in conjunction with a video or videos on JKD showing the actual drills and techniques, of which there are many out there. It would be difficult to pick these up just from the photos. Steve Grody has done an excellent series specifically on trapping skills, and others have done video series covering the more general JKD curriculum. In fact, you can often find these used at bargain prices on e Bay. You might have to check the auctions there for a few weeks to find some, but eventually you should be able to get them. If you're an experienced JKD practitioner you shouldn't have any trouble following the photos.
Great Book.......2004-03-13
A great look at not only classic JKD techniques but also new ones developed by Larry Hartsell. Being an original student of Bruce Lee Larry has the rare ability to absorb what is useful and transmit that to his students. The drills found this book are very helpful and will help those of us with some expirince get better that much faster. For the Newbies it will give you an inside look at what JKD is about.
good collection of training drills and strategies.......2003-04-23
The book has a good collection of drills for improving one's sensetivity and trapping range skills, as well as sections on strategies for dealing with a few general categories of fighters; boxers, kickboxers, grapplers and "street fighters".
Although anybody interested in Jun Fan Gung Fu or Jeet Kune Do would probably enjoy this book and learn from it, I'm doubtful that someone who hasn't studied Jun Fan or Wing Chun under a qualified instructor will be able to follow what's going on in the energy and trapping drills. Although the photographs are very well done, and other than a few minor typographical errors, the descriptions are clear to me, I've shown the book to friends who've had no instruction in Jun Fan or Wing Chun and they weren't able to figure out how perform the drills properly from the book.
If you already know Wing Chun or Jun Fan, the drills are helpful, but if you don't, you're not going to learn trapping from them. It is also important to note for those w/o training that these are meant as drills and not techniques. I suggest finding a qualified Jun Fan or Wing Chun instructor (there is a directory of certified Jun Fan/JKD instructors at Dan Inosanto's web site) and then get this book after you've learned some trapping and the ping chuei gua chuie and 1-2 and 1-3 series. You'll get a lot more out of it then.
The book also contains a section on the Jun Fan wooden dummy form, but like the trapping drills, unless you already have the training, you may have a difficult time figuring how he's moving between the photographs.
Like all of Larry Hartsell's other books, this one is a must for any Jun Fan/JKD student's library, but it might be a bit hard for the untrained to get what's going on. If you're really interested though, go find a teacher :)

Haganah system in written form.......2005-01-27
This book includes the complete haganah self defence system. You can use the book by itself, but it is designed to be used with VHS or DVD set.
Haganah is self defence system that has been largely influenced by krav maga. The idea behind haganah is that all of the techniques are combat proven, and the system is being constantly evaluated and updated. What makes haganah different from other martial arts is that you don't have to study several years until you can reach the more advanced techniques. There are no hidden secrets available to only the most advanced students. Quite the opposite: Haganah training is based on military training principles, where you train all of the techniques in rotations, each of the rotations taking few months to run through. After you have gone through one rotation, you have been introduced to all of the techniques, and after few rotations, you begin to master them.
Another aspect unique to haganah is thing called point of reference (POR). This means that no matter how your opponents attacks, your aim is to end up in one of three positions relative to your attacker, and after that you have three options (incapacitating, killing or taking into custody), depending what you want to accomplish.
The haganah system is designed so that you can learn all the moves and techniques on your own, by studying the book and instructional films, therefore you don't necessarily need a teacher (although having one wouldn't hurt). The techniques are quite simple and straightforward.
The book has large pages, filled with clear illustrations. You can understand the techniques by just reading the book and studying the illustrations, but having the instructional films to support your study will help considerably. On some occasions, the details are different in the book and film. In such cases, I have gone with the instructional films.
I like the haganah system very much, and would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in martial arts as pure self defence, and not as a sport. The major downside with this book is that unless you have the instructional films or a teacher, it would be hard to understand the techniques from the book alone. That is not inherent flaw with the system, but rather with the media. It simply is very hard to teach physical skills without live picture or actual teacher.
Product Description
From back cover: Integrated Defensive Fighting Systems, Inc. is proud to present the official training manual of the Fierce Israeli Guerrilla Hand-tohand Tactics (F.I.G.H.T.) program. The F.I.G.H.T. program uses the most effective self-defense system available today- Haganah. The Haganah advanced combat systm is based on both Israeli martial arts and Israeli military tactics as used by Israeli Special Forces operatives in extremely hostile situations. Haganah is more than simply a martial art, it is a devastating street combat system, and represents the future of hand-to-hand combat and street fighting methodologies, intense, integrated, powerful, and effective.

This method was "rediscovered" by Rob LaPointe in his travels to China and Japan - and now it's catching on world wide. Rob's a 4th degree Black Sash and a Sparring and Push Hands Gold Medalist who's taught FBI, CIA, ATF, DIA, and DOD. He's even done a "special request" workshop for U.S. State Department personnel prior to deployment overseas, and in 1999 he was a featured speaker at the Annual Convention of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Over the years he's acquired some of the most effective and intriguing fighter's conditioning drills I've ever seen. His program is based on the "Animal Styles" training of Chinese Kung Fu.
The secrets of the ancient's are really the secrets of the animals.
Crane teaches balance and rooting
Tiger tones and energizes every muscle
Eagle develops grasping strength
Snake gives flexibility and quickness
Dragon trains laser-sharp concentration
Whether you're a ring fighter, or an average guy frustrated by stubborn flab, this program evicts fat, evolves skill, and bestows a monk's mental focus.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-09-19
This is a pretty good book. It focuses on writings though. If you would like to have a book that speaks on communication in general, then I would suggest "How to Use Power Phrases" by Meryl Runion or optimally both books. The examples in "Power Phrases" are verbal examples, but can be used in both situations. "How to say it" should be titled "How to put it in writing"
Great Graduation Gift.......2007-06-22
I believe the ability to write a thoughtful and effective letter is an important skill to have, and one that many younger people today are not developing due to all of our electronic communications. I got this for a graduation gift and it has truly helped me become better at writing good letters for my new "adult" life, from thank you letters to job correspondence and more.
How to say it.......2007-05-12
This is a must have for anyone who writes, talks, or otherwise communicates with other people. I use it all the time for writing letters.
Great Reference Book.......2007-02-02
I draw a blank sometimes on what to say and when to say it. That's why I bought to book - to fill in the blanks !! Love it ! More than I expected.
The best so far.......2006-07-14
A lot has been written already about this book, so I would like to concentrate on one major feature of this manual.
I have several books about letter writing and this is the one I most often use and whoever I showed this book to wanted to buy it. Books of this kind fall into two broad categories: 1. short explanations and a lot of sample letters. 2. long explanations and a reasonable amount of sample letters. This book, however, shows that something more can be done. I usually have the problem with the first category that some authors tend to empty their Document folders from the work computers into a book and write some clever remarks as an introduction to them. Rosalie Maggio's book introduces methodology into the editing process: she gives you useful advice and also warning what not to do, but after that the topics are built up from word level gradually through phrases, sentences, paragraphs until you get to the actual sample letters. This way, you get much more useful material than you could get only with sample letters.

Touch the heart.......2003-05-08
I truly enjoyed this books.I felt like I was there with the characters especially when Amy found out about Sara. I felt for both girls hurt. I think it is truly a great book for friends and love ones of young teens who think they may be gay.
A realistic story of jealousy and change........2000-05-09
Amy and her best friend Sara have always done everything together; but Sara's growing closeness to another girl is threatening their exclusive friendship. Amy discovers Sara has a secret - which she's shared with the other girl - and trouble quickly divides them. A realistic story of jealousy and change.
November Ever After.......2000-04-15
I loved this book! Laura Torres does a magnificant job creating a world where Amy, whose mom has been killed recently in a car crash, is trying to heal. Amy's best friend, Sara, who is Amy's support, seems to be slipping away. The great thing about this novel, is when Sara admits that she is gay, we see Amy is upset, not by her friend's sexual preference, but because Sara didn't trust Amy with this knowledge.
Torres has a way with words, and when Amy is alone, dealing with the grief from losing her mother, the reader feels that grief. Descriptions are perfect, lending a real sense of place, characters are strong (young love as well as best friends), and dialogue is fast-moving.
The only thing that I am disappointed about is that there aren't any other fiction titles by Laura Torres. I felt this was a fine, well-written first novel. I can't wait to read more.
