Book Description
In this invaluable book, leading agronomic researchers provide in-depth reviews of present conservation tillage practices in a wide variety of temperate agroecosystems. Each chapter characterizes how conservation tillage has been developed and adapted or modified to fit specific environments, with the chapters divided into the following climate regions: Cool Humid, Cool Humid to Warm Humid, Warm Humid, and Sub-Humid to Semi-Arid Continental. Each chapter also discusses important topics such as weed problems, crop rotation, fertilizer requirements, soil properties and processes, soil erosion, soil chemistry, soil physics, and environmental issues. A perfect working reference, this resource provides a synthesis of existing research and practices and shows how soil, climatic, and biological constraints can be overcome or circumvented.

Book Description
Soil tillage is, and will remain, the guiding component of soil management and consequently has far-reaching implications for agroecosystems. Understanding structures and functions of soil ecosystems under different tillage/no tillage practices is an essential requirement for any future farming concepts. Soil Tillage in Agroecosystems emphasizes these aspects in all 12 chapters, highlighting both the short- and long-term effects of soil cultivation practices on the soil ecosystem above and below the soil surface. Using the knowledge of soil ecology under natural, undisturbed conditions, the text focuses on how cultivation affects soil and the soil environment. In particular it highlights how methods of soil tillage can influence soil structure, soil chemical processes, soil borne pathogens, and pest species. Covering the aspects of soil tillage on different taxa, the book concludes with a synthesis of the role of soil tillage in securing a sustainable agricultural environment. Soil Tillage in Agroecosystems offers a broad and comprehensive view of the interrelations of multifaceted tillage practices and the biological, chemical, and physical components of soil ecosystems. Tillage effects are highlighted within the context of the whole farming system, so as to provide the scientific basis for choosing different tillage options in order to achieve the best possible sustainable base for long-lasting agricultural production.

Sanitized facts which can be taken and twisted by the Politically Correct droolers out there.......2007-06-21
Yes, in this work you get all sorts of little details about Comanche habits - food preparation, preferred camping spots, etc. All very nice and quaint. As for their more notorious habits, well, these have been omitted or sanitized ( These days, authors must never be Pollitically INCORRECT by writing about uncomfortable FACTS surrounding all the lovely Native Americans of yesteryear! ) and so the reader who buys books like this is aways left in the dark about many, many things connected to the Comanches which they should know about in order to acquire a complete picture of these Indians.
For a far better overview of just what these aboriginals were like, read my reviews of Nine Years Among the Indians, 1870-1879: The Story of the Captivity and Life of a Texan Among the Indians and also Three Years Among the Comanches: The Narrative of Nelson Lee, the Texas Ranger and don't even think of missing Scalp Dance: Indian Warfare on the High Plains, 1865-1879 and Life Among the Apaches (Bison Book)
If you take the time to read my extensive reviews of these books and then purchase them, you'll easilt get much more on the Comanches than these present-day, Politically Correct, sanitized works can offer by far.
But for the ULTIMATE in information on the Comanche - and their even more fierce allies, the Kiowa - quickly purchase
Comanches (Pimlico Wild West)
and
The Kiowas (Civilization of the American Indian Series)
These are two books which far surpass any others which are strictly dedicated to AmerIndian tribes.
A classic Work on the Comanches.......2002-03-13
The Comanches: Lords of the South Plains, by Ernest Wallace and E. Adamson Hoebel, is a comprehensive ethnological study of the Comanches. It assesses the minutia of their origins, social structure, government as well as a history of their communal existence. An underlying tension regarding this work is the credibility of late day informates as opposed to period records. At issue is the comprehensive interpretation suggested for Comanche government and law as opposed to the meager allowance given to Comanche cosmogony. Regarding government and law, after citing very limited source data from informants, the authors suggest an extensive system of government and law. Focusing on various aspects of the Comanche social experience, they drew parallels with modern day legal code. In the end, it seems, the authors imposed a system with nomenclature upon the Comanche social culture that did not in totality exist. On the other had they are adamant that the Comanches did not maintain extensive philosophical or theological thought. Yet, the evidence they present clearly suggests they did. Comanches commitment to the "guardian spirit complex", and the "Great Spirit" in every aspect of their lives evinced an unequivocal as well as pervading theology. Nineteenth century observers of the Comanches, Dodge, Neighbors, Babb, Burnett and others noted that the Comanches maintained deep theological notions. Nonetheless, Wallace and Hoebel are skeptical and suggest that later Christian writers forced their views upon Comanche theology because descriptions of Comanche cosmology, similar to certain Christian believes, were not supported by the evidence given by informants in the 1933 Santa Fe Laboratory group. It truth, informants said very little about theology or cosmogony. Clearly, data taken from the Santa Fe Laboratory study is given credence over recorded witnesses from the period.
Despite the source issue, overall, this work is a superb study of the Comanches.

It makes me embarrassed to be English........1999-05-07
A liveley narrative with a knowledgable insight into a way of life destroyed by English arrogance and ignorance. I didn't know this part of history before reading the book and it has inspired me to read further. Few liberties appear to have been taken to make people any more heroic or cowardly than they might have been in real life.

Book Description
Every year, hundreds of thousands of children play “Cal Ripken Baseball” in the largest division of Babe Ruth League, Inc.
Play Baseball the Ripken Way is the ultimate guide to playing the game, by one of the sport’s living legends.
Baseball is America’s national pastime, but that doesn’t mean we’re all born naturals. Kids of all ages (and their parents) are eager to improve specific skills, and now they can learn from one of the most respected baseball families in history. Cal and Bill Ripken have written a thoroughly illustrated instructional book that clearly explains proper baseball fundamentals—hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching, and much more.
Based on the teachings of the late Cal Ripken, Sr., a player, coach, manager, and scout in the Baltimore Orioles system for thirty-seven years,
Play Baseball the Ripken Way shows players just what they need to do to be their best while maintaining a sense of fun and accomplishment with every new lesson. The Ripken Way consists of the following principles:
*Keep It Simple: Teaching that is too complicated is difficult to remember and can result in frustration.
*Explain Why: A teacher who cannot explain why is not truly teaching. Lessons that make sense will stick with players.
*Celebrate the Individual: No two players are alike, so why treat them as if they are?
*Make It Fun: The game gets serious enough quickly enough on its own. Drills and instruction should be structured so that players can enjoy themselves while learning.
The book also includes tips for parents and coaches, practice workouts, and drills for players of every level.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Play Baseball the Ripken Way.......2007-03-16
Very well written, very informative down to earth explanations and philosophy.
Good tips and drills.......2006-11-10
Gives insight that can be used for any age player. Breaks down to a fundamental level. Recommend for any youth coach.
Bookworm's Crash-Course in Baseball.......2006-09-02
I picked up this book at the local sporting goods store while I was buying gloves, bats, socks, pants, and etc. for my two sons who were starting little league baseball.
Just a few weeks earlier, I had declined a spot as an assistant coach due to not being "athletic", and I saw Ripken's book as an opportunity to learn some of the things that other dads had learned as kids.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have not read it cover-to-cover, but have browsed and spot-read it throughout the season.
As a result, I now understand more of the things other dads are yelling out. For example, for those in the field, "keep your eye on the ball" means watch the ball from the beginning of the pitch, all the way to the bat, as it connects with and leaves the bat, then all the way to the glove.
Chapters are given for each of the aspects of the game, pitching, fielding, hitting, catching, running, and so forth. Text narratives are easily understood, avoiding or explaining the sports "jargon" that confuses many beginning players (e.g. "choke up on the bat", "take two"). Pictures explicitly illustrate concepts such as batting and fielding stances.
Ripken's narrative also provides fun training excercises used by coaches (both major and little leagues) to develop baseball skills.
I have kept this book within an arm's reach in my office all summer long. Ripken's baseball insights have enabled me to help my sons develop their own throwing and batting skills.
Maybe next year, I might take that assistant coach position!
Not bad.......2006-01-26
This book isn't bad. I have not finished reading it, but it does give quite a bit of useful information. However, Cal seems to repeat himself several times in the book. There are many books out there that offer adequate, if not better, knowledge of how to play the game. Louisville Slugger's book is good as well as Coaching Pitchers. I would suggest only buying this book if you are a die hard baseball fan and plan on collecting many books. One good thing about the book is that Cal does give that sense of how to be a good teammate and maybe even a great family member.
What You would Expect from Cal Ripken: Excellent.......2005-12-19
I am a baseball fan. I played as a kid and go to seem MLB games in my home town of Toronto. We are in the same conference as the Baltimore Orioles (American League East), Cal's old team so I saw him play quite a bit. He is a graceful and thoughtful player. His four trademarks were a love of the game, natural ability, a lot of practice, a thinking player, and he has a lot of experience. Also he comes from a baseball family. In short he is among the best all round players to have ever played the games and to our benefit he stayed late after every game signing autographs - a rarity today.
If I was going to pick one recent player to write a book an learning baseball he would be the man. He has intelligence, experience and the love for the game. Many other players might be faster, or better hitters, etc. but he was the total package, a guy that could pace himself on and off the field and a person that really loved the game and cared for the fans.
So that brings us to the book. It is impressive! It is a work of love by the authors. It is well laid out with a chapter by chapter review of the game with lots and lots of bright color photographs, some in a time sequence so they show how the action evolves. He and the other authors appear in the photos wearing simple black and white uniforms demonstrating baseball fundamentals. He tries to explain some of the more subtle yet important parts of the game. He covers all the basic aspects such as pitching, how to hold the pitched ball, catching, playing the infield, the outfield, hitting, etc.
Excellent for all levels of baseball, playing or a fan. Highly recommend. Everyone will learn something new, even old fans like me.

Book Description
When a teenage boy's widowed mom gets a job as a stripper, it makes for some tricky social maneuvering in this coming-of-age story from the wonderfully witty Ron Koertge.
"Anyway," Sully said, "I've got just what you need to take your mind off your troubles."
"Thirty pounds of chocolate decadence?"
"A girl."
"I don't need a girl."
"You do. Now more than ever."
"And what would I tell her my mother did for a living?"
"Lie."
Life has not been easy lately for sixteen-year-old Walker. His father has died, his girlfriend has moved away, and the family finances are in a shambles. Finally it seems as if things are looking up: Walker has a date with Rachel, the beautiful new girl in his class, and his mother has announced she's gotten a job. Only not your average, run-of-the-mill mom's job. Walker's mother is going to work as a stripper. What if his friends find out? What if Rachel finds out? Coincidentally, Walker's dad has left him a piece of land on which Rachel's father is scheming to build a mall, and after seeing the land, Walker goes about the hard work of farming it - and the hard work of being in love for the first time. Propelled by Ron Koertge's rapid-fire repartee, this is the funny and touching tale of a winningly honest protagonist discovering the perils and rewards of family, friendship, and romance.
Customer Reviews:
incredibly funny!.......2005-12-02
wow, this book was sooo funny! This book is about a teenage boy, whose mom is a stripper at a sleezy club. He's completelly ashamed of his mom, so he doesn't tell his girlfriend. He is a typical teenage boy; very insecure. His only real friend is a girlcrazy self acclaimed doctor. This is all until he meets his future girlfriend. She's beautiful, and new to the school. When he finally gets the courage to ask her out, she automaticlally says yes.
He finds later, that he really loves this girl, and he can not keep the secret about his mom. Him and his girlfriend broke his virginity, and did everything together. This book is better for teenagers, because much of the subject matter is "unsutible for young children" lol
so increadibly hallarious!! Robin gail.......1998-11-30
im 13 and i read this book a couple days ago. all i need to say is that anyone remotely in their right mind has to read this to know how funny it is. especialy being a girl. i understood everything in the book so its not like it was new to me or anything about the way guys act and what they might do, say, or think about behinde closed doors. the only bad things about the book was when they talk about food so much and how fat he is. its so gross! that wasnt neccasary at all. the other really sick thing was that walkers- the lead character- mom is a striper and hes like 15 or 16 and he goes to the joint to wathch his mom!!! how sick is that?!!! the tittle really has nothing to do with the story so dont judge it by its cover. if you do, you really wony want to read it but im extreamly happy i did. definetly read it no matter what mood your in or if your a guy or whatever cause its totaly worth it! definetly a 13-19 or 20 reading age book. just read it!!!!
