Book Description
Most businesses consider a multitude of factors to evaluate the performance of each business sector. In today's business culture, one singular number - OSHA recordable - typically measures safety. This is comparable to driving down the highway using your rear view mirror to steer. Business Measurements for Safety Performance provides a simple, effective, and applicable method of measuring safety performance. Just as other sectors consider equipment damage, lost product, employee turnover, customer satisfaction, and a host of other factors, so should safety performance. It can and should be measured using the same criteria as all other business sectors. Safety performance can affect a company's bottom line. The challenge: can we quantifiably measure safety performance in the same way we measure production performance, sales performance, or any other business sector. Business Measurements for Safety Performance supplies the tools you need for safety measurement to compete with other business sectors for company dollars, awareness, and commitment from management. Product Description
Much of what is measured in business, especially in safety, is governed by conventional wisdom. In many cases, there are absolutely no data to support the conventional wisdom, and often the evidence that does exist indicates that the conventional wisdom is wrong. This book improves on the conventional wisdom and help readers avoid misdirected decisions driven by flawed measures. The purpose of our book is to help others make better decisions because they have good measures based on sound theory of effective measurement. Rather than trying to lay out a set of procedures or practices that can used to improve safety, the authors hope to provide the theoretical knowledge that will enable the reader to understand and address the underlying causes of management-system problems.

Still relevant.......2007-05-13
Though Asian agriculture may not seem to be of interest to all, this book offers anyone who likes to grow things a look at logical simplicity in the use of land--permaculture at its best. It also adds to the history of the world, by providing obscure details about farming-village life, and many photos. Every culture has wisdom to pass on to another, and this book also features the cultural quirks and foibles alongside the logic.

Introduction to Algol

Customer Reviews:
An important book about a dead language.......2004-06-06
Those who remember how to write an ALGOL program are a dying breed -- literally. However, apart from nostalgia, there are several good reasons why someone interested in the history of computing might collect this slim volume.
The designers of ALGOL were the first to design a compiler specification using the now-familiar BNF syntax. Formal specification grew out of the desire to prove the correctness of computer programs. But more importantly in this case, it also separated the design of a computer language from its implementation as a compiler. Thus, it paved the way for compatible compilers running on different hardware.
Two of this book's four authors -- Bauer and Samelson -- served on the committee that designed the ALGOL language. Another committee member, John Backus, is remembered both as the architect of FORTRAN, ALGOL's "predecessor", and as one of the creators of BNF. Other committee members included John McCarthy, Peter Naur, and Alan Perlis -- all later recipients of the ACM Turing Award.
The authors' stated intent was to provide a tutorial for ALGOL, a companion and supplement to the ALGOL committee's "Revised Report on the Algorithmic Language ALGOL 60". That report, included as an appendix in the book, contains both the definition of the language and a short history of the drafting process that led up to it.
Even though ALGOL never equaled FORTRAN's popularity in the US, it was an important tool in Europe and for the beginnings of academic computer science. From the end of World War II until the mid-1960s, the computing literature was mainly published in scholarly journals and trade publications rather than in book form. Early participants in the field were almost all "immigrants" from other academic specialties and much of the scholarly output appeared in mathematics, engineering and physical science journals. This book stands as an early product of computer programming's shift from craft to academic discipline.

Customer Reviews:
Getting started.......2006-11-02
Excellent book, whether you've had a school for a while or are starting a new one. I found it to be comprehensive, motivating, and helpful- Highly Recommend
Basic Business Book.......2006-03-10
Much of the book is about business basics. If you took out the word "martial arts" you could replace it with just about any other business. For what it is, the book is well worth the purchase price.
Great , Helpful Book.......2005-10-27
This book is well worth the money. It contains alot of information and thoughtful ideas. Well written.
Marketing for Martial Artists.......2004-12-09
As a part-time martial arts instructor who makes a living with his business degrees, I gotta tell you that this is a really well written text. Karen Vactor is a well-rounded martial artist with a business degree who has built three successful karate schools. Susan Peterson, Ph.D. is a professional writer as well as an accomplished martial artist as well. The two have teamed up to create a comprehensive work which, while overly pithy in some areas, is really quite good. Be warned, however, that this book is all about creating and running a commercially successful school. Not all martial artists will agree with the authors' philosophical approach but none can argue with the quality of the materials they provide.
Chapter one covers marketing your identity, whatever it is that makes your school unique and interesting to potential students, including how to choose a name that reflects your image. Chapter two covers the business groundwork, something that very few martial artists really understand how to do properly. It covers advisors (e.g., attorney, accountant) that you might need and how to develop a business plan. Rule number one in retail is location. So is rule 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6... you get the idea. The next chapter not only covers how to find a good location, but also how to figure out what it will cost you, how to negotiate a lease, and how to layout your dojo floor space. Chapter five covers essential legal administrivia like insurance and regulatory compliance.
Chapter six covers student contracts, fee schedules, and hiring employees. Not sure I entirely agree with the author's philosophy here, but the advice is sound nevertheless. Chapter seven covers advertising tools such as brochures, business cards, flyers, and your entrance signage. Chapter eight comprehensively covers basic marketing such as mass mailings, yellow pages ads, etc. Chapter nine goes into more detail on the same subject. Once marketing brings perspective students to your door, chapter ten deals with how to "close the deal" and sign them up. Chapter eleven covers attendance, student tracking, and payment tracking. Chapter eleven covers the how to keep track of your cash flow and create basic financial statements. Chapter thirteen is a good overview of strategies that keep students motivated and interested in coming back. Chapter fourteen covers how to place and sell products associated with your training (e.g., uniforms). It covers the basics of pricing, costs, profits, inventory tracking, and display. The final chapter is a "troubleshooting guide" that can help you solve problems such as high drop out rates, attendance problems, "closing" problems, etc. The glossary of business terms is a great overview for folks who don't really understand all that stuff.

Good Book by Smart Writers.......2004-03-21
While not as detailed as similar titles, this is a good overview of running a school.
There is a lot to learn in these pages.

Great Resource for Writers of Children's Books .......2006-07-22
This is well-organized and has all of the information one would need to access publishers. Agents and publicists, as well as writers, need to have this "encyclopedia" of resources. There is a wealth of information needed for sending book proposals and manuscripts. Just excellent!
The Most Important Tool for the Children's Book Genre.......2006-05-24
Professionals in the children's book genre have been relying on the yearly Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market for 18 years. This guide covers everything writers and/or illustrators would ever need to find a home for their work.
The 2006 edition contains more than 800 listings of opportunities. Book publishers, magazine opportunities, literary agents, contests and conferences are just a few of the numerous types of listings you get in 400+ pages.
Each listing is updated yearly to make sure the contact information, pay rates and specific publishing needs are accurate. Editors of the guide generally work all year long to ensure the listings are up-to-date.
What makes this guide even more valuable are the articles, interviews and also help for those just getting started in the business. The guide could simply be a compilation of listings and it would be a great investment but the fact that these other resources are added make it a powerful tool for any writer or illustrator's career.
If you're searching for markets on your own, you're wasting precious time. The 2006 Writer's & Illustrator's Market does the tedious work for you so you can simply choose an appropriate market and find a publishing outlet for your work.
If you want to write for kids.......2006-05-24
If you want to write for kids, there's two things you need to do (i.e., other than writing your book!): join SCWBI and get this book. The book is full of great advice and contacts. A must-have for all children's writers.
Highly Informative- a book every personal library needs.......2006-03-20
This is a highly informative book that no household should be without. Held within these pages are countless words and expressions for every aspect of writing. From A to Z you will find references for everything. Fundraising letters, personal letters, query letters, sympathy notes, email, business, thank yous, etc. It is all found in this highly recommended book! Don't write without it!
Great for first-time authors!.......2006-03-09
This book gave me a good perspective on what it takes to "try" to get a children's book published. I really feel like I have a better grasp on the reality of writing children's books...it's not as easy as I had first expected!

An absorbing picture of the complicated Vietnam War era, Too Big a Storm is also a moving portrait of the healing power of family and friends, and of one exceptional young woman's self-discovery.
Customer Reviews:
Great story with big ideas and believably flawed characters.......2004-09-11
The summer of 1969 is life-altering for 18-year-old Brady Callahan. When she meets rich-girl Sally the night that men first walk on the moon, Sally kisses her on the lips, foretelling an unusual friendship:
" ...Did you like kissing me? Didn't do much for me."
Sally nodded thoughtfully. "Same, I guess. I want something to do that, Brady. I want to feel something and be shaken up."
"Be careful what you wish for."
Brady's belief that she can fix every situation is shaken when Sally finally finds her cause as a political radical opposing the Vietnam War. In the meantime, Brady's brother Will, fighting in Vietnam, vanishes. The FBI considers him to be a deserter and a traitor, leaving the family open to condemnation and confusion. Although someone using Will's name writes articles for a newsletter from Saigon called The Deserter Times, Brady is convinced that the writer is not her brother. Where did her brother go? Is he actually a prisoner --- or worse?
Brady will start college in the fall. Meanwhile, she works at the local center to assist vagrants, runaways and veterans. Here, she meets and falls in love with Mark, a young veteran. Although the relationship is important to her, it's just one thread of Brady's tumultuous life complete with family relations, peace demonstrations, job responsibilities, friends heading for the Woodstock musical festival, and government investigations into disappearances of people she loves.
TOO BIG A STORM is a good read filled with big ideas, set in a fascinating era. Brady, a likeable character in a cast of believably flawed humans (there's not a stereotype in the lot), matures in a realistic and gratifying manner. Recommended!
