Book Description
Drawing on his vast knowledge and direct experience of most of the key events in astronomy and space exploration during this century, Patrick Moore takes a sideways look at the historical reports and contemporary thought behind a wide range of astronomical topics. The Wandering Astronomer presents his personal accounts of the towering characters of 20th-century astronomy, intriguing facts about puzzling astronomical phenomena, and amusing stories about the quirkier side of astronomy and space exploration. This collection of essays covers everything from the case of vanishing planets to UFOs over Selsey. Entertaining and informative, it will be enjoyable reading for both seasoned and amateur astronomers as well as general science readers. About the Author Author and broadcaster Patrick Moore is a lunar specialist who makes observations from his home in Selsey on most clear nights. He has written more than 100 books, and for the past 43 years he has presented BBC TV's Sky at Night program without missing a single episode. Moore served in the RAF during WWII and has been involved in astronomy since he was a boy. In 1967 he was awarded the OBE for his services to astronomy, and in 1988 he received the CBE. He also recently received a knighthood in the New Years Honours list.
Book Description
Ecology has never been a more exciting science than it is now. Indeed, challenged with everything from guiding society towards a sustainable biosphere to passing judgment on conservation plans for spotted owls, ecology is attracting the best and brightest students.
To meet its challenges, ecology draws inspiration from economics, chemistry, physics, and atmospheric sciences, while remaining firmly grounded in the natural history of organisms. But professional scientists are not the only ones who must struggle with ecological questions and think along interdisciplinary linesóafter all, environmental debates commonly find their way into courtrooms, legislative bodies, and the voting booth. The task of nurturing our biosphere demands that we all have some familiarity with ecology, if only so that we can distinguish false prophets of ecological doom from those justified calls to political action in the service of our environment. The last century was marked by the industrial and computer revolutions; the next century will likely see the environmental revolution. We need sound, yet provocative, informationósuch as that developed by the contributors to this volumeóas well as information that contributes to a basic understanding of ecology as well as specific environmental crises.
Exploring Ecology and Its Applications is not a comprehensive textbook. Instead, it is a collection of articles from American Scientist, in which leading researchers explain their personal approaches and points of view regarding ecological problem-solving. Too often, textbooks homogenize science into a bland soup of principles and examples, as though all participants in a field agreed upon one common pathway to truth. Such is never the case in science, and it is even less the case in ecology than in most other sciences. Ecology is a fractious field, with approaches ranging from painstaking observations of organisms in their natural environment, to clever manipulations of population densities in small experimental ponds, to computerized interpretation of satellite images. Designed to provide vivid supplementary readings for ecology or environmental science courses, this text exposes students to the many different ways of doing ecology by encompassing the major questions that ecologists are currently tackling. Indeed, for majors, non-majors, and professionals alike, Exploring Ecology and Its Applications introduces a richly rewarding literature.

The first comprehensive sailing start-up kit for adult learners
Your First Sailboat is the only book that puts entry-level sailboat selection, use, maintenance, and lifestyle issues all in one place for new sailors who happen to discover this wonderful sport as adults. This book answers questions that other books don't even think to ask: Can a keelboat tip over? Can I take a centerboard boat onto open water? What's a fair price to pay for the boat I want? Can I trailer a keelboat? How do I make this boat move? How do I make it stop moving? How do I take care of it? This complete guide for the beginning sailor:
- Offers authoritative advice on choosing a sailboat
- Provides decision trees to guide the reader to the perfect starter boat
- Discusses lake vs. ocean boats, family day sailing vs. racing, and more
- Answers all of the new sailor's questions
Customer Reviews:
Your fisrt sailboat: How to Find and Sail the Right Boat for you.......2007-09-03
There has got to be better books out there for the first time sailboat owner than this. The information is very sparse and lacking in any kind of detail. As an example there is a chapter on "From Whom Should I Buy?" that is two pages long. Even a novice such as myself knows that you are either going to buy from a private owner or a broker. In fact there are 39 chapters in this book, and they are all about two to three pages long. The book just does not flow well. In the introduction the author makes you feel as if after reading this book you will grasp all the basic concepts of boat ownership and sailing, when in fact you walk away with more questions about sailing then when you started reading the book. The one thing the book did tell me was that I better read other books on the subject before I continue on the path to sailboat ownership. One thing I would recommend is that you get profesional instruction on sailing and ask a lot of questions of other boat owners before you decide to buy a boat and start sailing. If you feel you need to read this book, get it at the libarary, and save yourself the money.
NOT for the person who is seriously thinking about buying a boat..........2007-02-03
I bought this book for a friend who is looking to buy her first boat. My decision to buy this particular book was based to a large extent upon the positive reviews that had been posted. Upon receiving and reading the book, however, I was fairly shocked that it had been rated so highly.
I know how to sail, but even if I didn't, I would still be a little insulted by the child-like, basic level of the material. I might buy this for my 9 year old son who is just being introduced to sailing - it would be appropriate at this level. However, I can't imagine this book being useful to anyone with any basic understanding of sailing, and certainly not useful for a person who possesses the necessary level of knowledge to even be considering buying a boat. If you need to read the part about "How do I make the boat go", save the $11 you would spend on this book and either take a basic dinghy sailing course or buy a truly educational book on the subject.
I'm glad that other buyers were satisfied with their purchase of this book - however, I immediately returned mine.

Excellent book. Really enjoyable read as well as informative about sailing lifestyle and everything you need to know about buying your first sailboat.

Practical Sailing Advice in ENGLISH!!!.......2006-01-20
My husband and I have signed up for ASA Sailing classes, so we have been reading many "how-to" books on sailing. Lots of these books jump right into sailing lingo, and so the subject matter is very confusing for the novice sailor.
We finally found Your First Sailboat when we looked for books on the subject of buying a sailboat. This is the book we should have read first!! Daniel Spurr writes humorously about the selection of boats, and along the way, we learn about sailing techniques as well. He approaches the sailing sport with clarity and common sense, and he writes in plain jargon, not the technical language that would overwhelm a beginner.
We love this book!

A detailed guide.......2000-01-21
This is one of the most complete guides to the region that I have ever seen, and I've lived in all the states covered (including Washington, DC) except for Delaware. There are some holes--northeastern Maryland is not covered at all nor is part of Virginia's Allegheny Highlands--and the book now suffers from Lonely Planet's practice of not updating their guides annually, but for in-depth coverage of off the beaten track areas such as western Maryland and southwest Virginia, where I live, this book is superior to any other guide I've ever seen.
This book is not up to the standards of LP.......1999-03-27
The figures and schedules are way outdated. The maps are fairly accurate. It does have some good suggestions on "Places to Eat", but not really on "Places to Stay". I've used several LP guides for many different places in the World, and this book is definitely way below the rest. Still, it offers some help for the firts time travelers.
Book Description
Bad girl in town ...
Steven Wakefield is crushed when his girlfriend, Tricia, dies after a tragic illness. The only things that keep him going are the memory of their love and his promise to Tricia to take care of her sister, Betsy, after she's gone.
Betsy Martin's wild exploits with drink, drugs, and boys have left her with the worst reputation in Sweet Valley. But when Steven takes her into the Wakefield home, Betsy makes a promise to change. And as her goodness grows, so does her love for Steven.
Jessica, Steven's conniving younger sister, doesn't like this one bit. She makes a little promise of her own to get Betsy out of the house and out of Steven's life... forever!

Choose the SVH adventures..they are better........2001-08-03
Betsy Martin's sister is dead and Steven Wakefield is just as devastated as anyone is as he was in love with her.He will no way forget his promise to Tricia,to take care of Betsy,a wild, troublesome girl. The Wakefield family feel that he is going too far, even letting the rebellious bad-girl live in their house.Nobody is more peed off than Jessica either!!!!!
Promises, Promises, Promises..........2000-02-02
This book was perfect! It was very shocking that Betsy is moving to Wakefields. I hated Elizabeth in this book. Why? Because she believes that Betsy can change but in "Head Over Heels" and in "Memories" she doesn't believe that Bruce and Cara haven change. Of course Betsy have, but Liz is still a hypocrite. This book was wonderful. The beginning was sad and ending was happy. Isn't that cool?
People can Change.......1998-12-17
That's the moral of this book. Betsy is trash but Steven is helping her go straight. While Jessica is trying to get Steven away from her. This book was good. It's sort of like book number 10 about Annie Whiteman changing. But it's still good.

Why Mr. President.....you ARE a feminist.......2004-09-08
Bill Clinton earned the moniker `the nation's first female president' for his intense interest in `women's' policy issues and was simultaneously lampooned by the talk shows...etc for apparently contradictory personal behavior, but Martin emphasizes he was not the only one. Throughout the latter 20th century, most chief executives had a contradictory response to women, and especially organized feminism.
In an effort to win women voters (who apparently preferred Nixon during the 1960 election) and quell simultaneous intra-party controversy over the Equal Rights Amendment (then opposed by organized labor), John F. Kennedy created the President's Commission on the Status of Women. Identifying and recommending changes in the sociolegal status of American women, the PSCW (and by default the Kennedy administration) encouraged the revival of American feminism. Pondering how he would have built on PSCW findings if he had lived is an interesting exercise for today's feminist policy makers.
Most people would be hard pressed to call Richard Nixon a liberal feminist, but he supported the Equal Rights Amendment, Affirmative Action, and refrained from attacking the Roe decision (as predecessor Reagan would begin in the 1980 campaign). Nixon appears moderate by some liberal feminist group standards, but Martin fails to explain how the administration's now-disclosed hatred of social justice movements ultimately affected what policies were enacted; if the FBI spied on the women's liberation movement it is safe bet the Nixon White House was in no hurry to align itself with this same cause.
Martin gives Jimmy Carter the most credit for advancing women's status prior to the 1990's.Carter not only continued to increase the number of women hired for White House policy positions, but pointedly looked to the feminist movement for his talent pool----hiring Midge Costanza and her successor Sarah Weddington to act as bureaucracy-movement liaison. Carter's wife Rosalyn (who is the first `first lady' to sit in on Cabinet meetings) also obviously influenced how the Carter administration saw and then acted upon gender equity issues.
Overall this is a good book for graduate presidency/women in politics classes and selected readings can be assigned to graduate classes. Martin took pains to make her work decipherable outside the academic realm; activists and lay readers alike will be fascinated by the hidden American history.
