stories for whitewater boaters.......2004-06-02

This collection of whitewater stories centers on the theme of new experiences and adventures from the perspective of river runners. Some of these stories have been published elsewhere. The quality of the writing varies but it's a good collection and a worthy addition to any paddler's library who enjoys stories from the river. The collection leads off with Andrzej Pietowski's adventure with a crew from Poland who set off down Peru's Rio Colca, which they completed despite formidable barriers to success. Richard Bangs, who would later record many first descents across the world, tells his story of learning to guide on the Grand Canyon. William Nealy, the sport's best-known cartoonist, tells his hilarious childhood story with appropriate cartoon illustrations of floating down a forbidden drainage ditch, known as Polio Creek. Yvon Chouninard joins the legends of class V explatory boating for a 3-day first descent of the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone. Robert Portman and Dan Reicher relive their experiences on the Yangtze paddling from Yuyang to Wushan and through the first of the Three Gorges, and then on the Li River. Pete Skinner provides a rare account of kayaking the Niagara River Gorge. Jamie McEwan tells the story of the pioneering run on Mexico's Santa Maria with his brother Tom along with Wick Walker and Andy Bridge. I agree with the reviewers above (below) that this book complements "Freedom of the Hills". In particular it focuses more on the decision making process than most books of these types. Although I've never traveled with either of the authors, they seem like lovely people and the stories they tell flesh them out for the reader. They also answered a question I had when I wrote them via email. In all, a solid book that it would do to put on your bookshelf.

The section on Common Problems with Decision Making was alone worthy the purchase!I could identify many issues and suggestions with my own experiences. Very well laid out book and a must read for anyone venturing into the sport of climbing, or those of us who wish to brush up on skills and ponder ways of continuous learning no matter the level of prior experience. One of definite climbing "bibles" written by people who do it for a living and are prepared to share their experiences and knowledge. Five stars IMHO!!! Happy climbing!

A gem of a book for all aspiring and experienced climbers. Mark Houston and Kathy Cosley are highly respected working mountain guides. Their book is full of practical and modern advice based upon their years of climbing around the world. Climbers of every level will want this well written addition to their library.

Climb harder than Freedom of the Hills..........2005-08-10

...but not to the extreme.

This book is the second chapter in an aspiring alpinists handbook. I found myself over the years amassing a pile of pooks on running, fittness*, nutrition*, supplements*, advanced rock climbing, ice climbing, crevasse rescue, orienteering*, navigation*, avalanche evaluation, etc. This book would have saved me a few bucks by putting alot of this in one place.

* = These are covered well in this book.

If you know Freedom of the Hills like the back ouf your hand, have Extreme Alpinism and a good book on slightly more advanced rock skills, don't bother. If not, get it.

Even with this book, you need a resource of some sort in avy eval and advanced rock/rope skills.

Sweet spot between the basics and the extreme.......2004-12-28

This book hits the sweet spot between Freedom of the Hills and Mark Twight. Finally, a book for those of us who know the basics, maybe have done some guided mountaineering trips or novice routes, and already know how to rock climb, but need to know more in order to venture further on our own. The authors frame everything in terms of making decisions, which is very helpful when you are doing things for the first time. Good discussions of equipment, hazards, weather, navigation, and protective systems. The approach is very down to earth and practical.

inspiration, please.......2002-08-01

Typical Lonely Planet in that it gives you all the facts, but very little inspiration. Basically for those who have already made up their mind and know exactly where they are going. That said the guide is incredibly detailed, it certainly doesn't leave out much of the nitty gritty kind. Then again, you don`t really need all this info as there are outfitters in Pakistan (forget the US/UK ones) that will take care of all the logistics for you at a price you can't beat, not even doing it all yourself.

THIS BOOK IS A VERY LIFE RELATING STORY. IT IS ABOUT A GIRL WHO THINKS SHE'S A BLIMP WITH WIRED FRAMED GLASSES, SHE HAS TWO FRIENDS, AND LIKE ANY OTHER GIRL, HAS A CRUSH ON A GUY AT SCHOOL. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK A LITTLE, BUT I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TITLE. THIS BOOK MIGHT HAVE A WEIRD TITLE, BUT IT HAS GOOD DESCRIBTIONS THAT PAINT PICTURES IN YOUR HEAD. I WOULD RECAMEND THIS BOOK TO SOME ONE WHO LIKES HUMOR AND REALITY RELATING STORIES.

The Cat Ate My Gymsuit ( a Parent's perspective).......2006-03-20

I decided to read this book along with my third grader (it was on her list of reading material rated for third grade reading). She and i both liked the book ok. I felt that the material was too advanced for a third grader to grasp. There were so many life lessons in this book. It will be better understood perhaps by middle school students or perhaps high school students. I had no appreciation for the lead character (Marcy) always putting herself down. She was way too introspective of her shortcomings. And because her Mother was weak in character, she could not help Marcy see the beauty in herself. It seemed morbid at times the way that this storyline keyed in on Marcy's insecurities. I understand the time that this book was penned (1978). Things were different for some women. I remember women being strong and working towards their independence. In 2006, this book would be counterproductive for young and older women.

The Cat Ate My Gymsuit is a really awesome book. It is realistic, funny, sad. I had a really hard time putting this book down. (even for a spelling test.) If you haven't read it, i suggest you do immeadiatly.
I read this book shortly after Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, which was wtitten around the same time, and found them to be similar in a messed-up sort of way. But I can totally relate to Marcy Lewis's feelings in the book. I also love the way it's written. Almost like a kid actually wrote it. The kids in the book were so similar to the kids at my own shcool. The entire book has this awesome sour-sweet taste to it. It was way cool.
