Book Description
Statistical techniques, in particular time series techniques, are widely used in astronomy and meteorology. Despite this, until recently there have been few attempts to bring researchers from the fields of statistics, astronomy, and meteorology together to discuss and formalize important problems. Applications of Time Series Analysis in Astronomy and Meteorology brings together a series of papers by experts in these fields, evenly devoted to the theory and methodology of time series, and to its applications to astronomy, meteorology, and climatology. The topics covered include detection of periodicities, spectral analysis of unequally spaced data, detection of change points and higher order spectral methods of non-linear and non-Gaussian signals. Estimation of fractal dimension and applications of wavelet methods to astronomy are also considered. Applications of Time Series Analysis in Astronomy and Meteorology is of interest to statisticians, astronomers, meteorologists, and climatologists alike.

Tame and Terrifying Tales.......2004-05-25
I bought this book for stories about fishing, hunting, trapping, wilderness travel and "white knuckle" adventure. What I found was a book that covered a wide variety of topics, all relevant to Alaska but in some cases a little "tame" or mundane for the typical adventure reader.
So, as is always the case, whether or not you'd like this book depends on your particular interests. I give it a high rating because it has something for everybody. In fact, the book contains almost 60 stories and if you find only 10 that you really enjoy the book is worth buying. I also rated it high because while every story is not a "gripping" adventure thriller, many of them are, and others are informative, entertaining or interesting in other ways.
Among the more "riveting" stories are two about men surrounded or pursued by wolves; one about researchers on a frozen lake during an earthquake; one about a fisherman caught under a capsized fishing boat and one about a daring float plane rescue of men stranded in a deep canyon river. There is the obligatory "avalanche" story and another about a raging walrus, and several "big fish" stories.
One or two stories deal with the psychological effects of prolonged isolated, wilderness living. Another, and one of my personal favorites, is a unique and revealing story about crime and punishment in the bush. It is entitled "Of Traps and Treasures--Klutuk."
Another story, "My Sunset Moose" deals with the realization that time changes everything, and that for better or worse, change must be accepted. Another, "A Trapper Leaves the Country" deals with the same subject, in the same somber way, but in a different context.
But my single favorite story is "A Few Mosquito Bites." I believe that any man or woman or any child old enough to understand simple language would enjoy this story about a man, his hybrid wolf-dogs and life in the wilderness. In fact, it would be worth buying this book just to get this story.
But please don't think that every story is about men going hunting or fishing, or getting killed or maimed in the woods! Many are written by women about the extraordinarily tough and determined women who were attracted to life in the the world's last great wilderness and last free country!
Lots of stories, lots of fun, easy reading. Recommended.
An Interesting Collection of Stories.......2003-02-21
"The Last Frontier" is an interesting collection of feature stories that originally appeared in "Alaska" magazine from 1935 until the present. They were chosen by the current editors of the magazine. The subject matter is quite varied, featuring outdoor adventure tales, life among the native people, wildlife exposes and much more. The stories are as varied as the people who inhabit the last great American wilderness.
The caveat I would note for anyone interested in reading the book is that most of the stories are quite short, and because they were published for a then-contemporary audience, someone not familiar with local history or geography might sometimes get lost in the narrative. Also, "Alaska" started out as a sportsman's magazine, so a lot of the early stories are about hunting and trapping, which some people might not enjoy.
Those cautions aside, "The Last Frontier" is a decent read for those who likes outdoor adventure stories.
Book Description
For thousands of years Alaska has called to us. The hardy souls who first answered that call endured bitter temperatures, maddening isolation, and often harrowing adventures for the privilege of living there, and many lost their lives in the process. The wonder of Alaska, as well as its terrifying dangers, come to life in this anthology, featuring true adventures described by some of the best writers in the world, each hand picked by bestselling writer and Alaska aficionado Spike Walker. Alaska: Tales of Adventure from the Last Frontier will open your eyes and stir your soul as it celebrates the untamed beauty of Alaska.

Book Description
The real mogul-skiing instruction you're looking for. Whether you want to ski gentle moguls with comfort and confidence, turn heads on your local mogul run, or compete in mogul contests, this book will give you the specialized techniques you need to reach your goal. In this first-of-its-kind book, mogul-skiing competitor Dan DiPiro reveals techniques that have remained largely unknown and unaddressed outside of competitive mogul-skiing circles. Most skiers try to ski moguls using only groomed-trail techniques, says DiPiro. But the bumps require a special set of techniques that have nothing to do with groomed-trail skiing. With an understanding of these special techniques, most fit, expert skiers can become good mogul skiers, and some can become excellent mogul skiers and even mogul competitors. For the aspiring mogul skier, this book is full of invaluable instruction. For the seasoned bumper, it's an ideal tune-up guide and a long-awaited affirmation. For all skiers interested in broadening their understanding of downhill skiing excellence, it's an original, eye-opening read.
Customer Reviews:
Well written and a great resource.......2007-09-17
The author does a great job of contrasting mogul technique with carving techniques used on groomers. For those who have been working at moguls and are looking for the final pieces to go over the top, this seems like a great resource. Mogul and race techniques are both hugely enjoyable things to learn and great skills to develop -- the author does a great job of helping those who have only learned one way of skiing (based on racing/carving) to learn a hugely enjoyable skill that can really fill out a skier's tool box. Thanks for writing something that makes it so clear.
This Book Cracks the Code.......2007-01-30
At last, there is a book that de-mystifies mogul skiing. Dan Diprio's book simplifies a rather complex form of skiing that plagued me for years. I must have taken 3 lessons on mogul skiing, and they were all a waste given that all 3 emphasized short radius turns (i.e., slalom carving) over and thru the bumps. What a waste of money and energy !!
Dan has it right. DO NOT listen to those carving experts who wrongly think that carving skills on the groomed and hard pack apply on the bumps. Bumps require a far different skill most expert carvers lack or don't appreciate (e.g., less round turns and edging, steering the skis, reduced hip angulation, weighting both skiis equally, etc).
Just returned from a Winter Park Colorado trip, and can now do moderate sized bumps on intermediate trails thanks to Dan's book.
Thanks Dan for a well written book that is easy to understand and will allow skiiers to venture beyond the groomed !!
Great instructional reading, Dan Dipiro really get's it done........2007-01-11
I've read my fair share of articles and books on sports intruction and can say without hesitation that this book ranks as high as any other.
Dan Dipiro provides the reader not only techniques and drills to apply on the mountian, but also the same for when your off the mountian. I highly recommend this book to any level of skier who's interested in increasing his bump skiing ability.
At last, a practical book on mogul skiing........2006-12-01
First, I am 63 and have been skiing for 40+ years. I now live in Southern California but generally ski at either Mammoth or Snowbird. I can turn my skis right and left and can usually get down most of the in-bounds trails at most resorts including the mogul runs. I like it all, but I really like bump skiing.
To that end, I want to give Dan DiPiro a big THANK YOU for writing Everything... . Frankly, my experience suggests he's absolutely right when he says that most ski instructors do not know how to ski bumps and try to teach people to ski bumps using racing technique. So while I do OK in the bumps, I have never quite mastered skiing the zipper line the bump skiers use.
Of course, it never dawned on my until read Dan's book, that the problem was not me, but my not knowing the techniques that the pro bump skiers used. I found the way in which he broke down the differences between trail and mogul skiing to make a lot of sense and I am looking forward to using the exercises he includes in his book to develop an alternate skill set that I can use to improve my bump skiing. So here's to Dan - for making a major contribution to skiing in general and my bump skiing in particular.
A must reading for bumpers.......2006-11-18
Dan's book is clear, straight forward and a very easy read. All instructional books should be like this. I've been struggling with bumps for a couple of years now and, with Dan's advice in my quiver, I'll be approaching the effort this winter with new found confidence. Believe me, it is well worth the cost and time to read and learn. Happy bumping!!!

Customer Reviews:
The most helpful.......2007-10-12
This is the most helpful workbook I own. Explanations are clear, examples are clear and practice sentences are many. Thanks.
Great help with learning Spanish.......2007-10-11
Deciding to try and renew and expand my college spanish has been hard, but since I work as a nurse in the hospital it is also necessary. This book has been very helpful in finding verbs and conjugating them. However you'll need more than just this book to really put things together.
great for anglophones.......2007-08-16
however I would have rather an all Spanish book on this topic since I find it easier to understand/comprehend Spanish grammar instruction, in Spanish
this book is a fine addition to my library and I recommend it
Amazing, but even Better with Behind the Wheel Spanish.......2007-08-14
I believe that if you do not know how the words are to be joined, then you cannot speak the language.
Prepositions are essential to learning any language, including Spanish.
Dorothy Richmond accomplises this task in a straightforward and easy-to-understand way.
I recommend that you use this amazing reference with Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs and text. In this fashion, you can get the 'hands on' practice you need while you drive, hearing the prepositions and pronouns being spoken by a wonderful native speaker in the comfort of your car.
Practice Makes Perfect does not have CDs so this is an excellent approach.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour
A new learning experience.......2007-08-11
I have been studying Spanish for five years, for the most part independently, using CDs text books and other forms of learning tools. I had a good sense of the language and could converse in simple sentences, with a patient listener. The main reason I could not move forward at a greater pace was a lack of command of the subject matter contained in the book.
I teach English to immigrants and my current student speaks it better than most. She can tell me when I make mistakes in Spanish, but cannot provide the rules (not many of us think of grammar rules after high school). This book does that and achieves it in a fashion that I think is so "right on" that one cannot go wrong.
Thank you Ms. Richmond!

Book Description
The last thing Nicholas wants to do is spend time in the Alberta bush, with the bugs, the bears, the cold. But when he crosses the school bully at the Grade Seven dance, his Dene friend Elvis's invitation for a weekend away suddenly seems much more attractive.
Walking on the muskeg, Nicholas feels completely lost--the landscape is strange, and so are the language and customs of Elvis's native family. Soon, however, Nicholas sees the point of what they say and do, how it helps them adapt to the harshness of the environment. When Nicholas and Elvis's bushplane crashes, killing the pilot, they need to draw on all the skills they have--and some they didn't even suspect they had.
Set against the harsh background of the northern bush, Plan B is Total Panic is the story of how two young men of very different backgrounds are brought together by crisis.
