Not impressed.......2005-11-18
As a former supervisor, manager, program manager, executive assistant, etc., I was not overly impressed with this book. For instance, I only extracted two quotes from it for my collection: "Employees want most to feel good about themselves and what they do. An effective manager enhances both" & (quoting Spencer Tracy) "Take your work very seriously, and yourself not at all." That's not many from a 392 page book. Mostly it's just common sense or irrelevant IMHO. Not recommended.

This book gives us the facts about how genetically engineered food is entering our diet. It looks at what they are, how they are produced, why they remain unlabeled, and how they arrive on our plates unannounced. This edition includes a new introduction and is updated throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on An Important Topic .......2005-01-09
The author presents a lot of important and useful information on the field of genetic engineering, particularly to the risks involved in the planting and consumption of genetically modified crops. His text is very well written and well substantiated through many references.
I was very impressed to read the thoroughly researched topics such as ecological risks of using genetically modified crops, which includes discussion of the emergence of herbicide resistant crops and insecticide resistant crops. The ethical and moral issues were also covered. Also, the possible health risks, such as allergic reactions and antibiotic resistance from eating genetically modified foods were particularly relevant to me.
As a consumer, I found this book a very informative and excellent read. Bravo!!
A most balanced view of a contentious subject........1999-10-09
Genetically modified foodstuffs are one of the most contentious subjects in the world today and will become more so as trade talks include their export. Nottingham has written a clear, balanced and judicious summary of both the biotechnology involved by how it impacts both developed and developing nations. The book is a must for anyone who wants to avoid the hype of both the agrochemical companies who produce GM products and the antis. Highly recommended.

Globalization and New Geographies of Conservation
ASIN: 1566704057 |
Book Description
A primary goal of agricultural research is to develop technology that will enable the world's farmers to produce enough food in a manner that is sustainable and economically viable. Genes In the Field: On-Farm Conservation of Crop Diversity is a comprehensive collection of papers focusing on agricultural conservation and diversity issues throughout the world.
Genetic diversity is important to individual farmers and farming communities and to the agricultural community in general. Recently, regional and local farm seed variety has been reduced because of increased population, agricultural science and technology and the integration of the world's many diverse cultures. Because of this, diversity on individual farms across wide regions is threatened by modern crop varieties that have been bred for broad adaptation, resistance to disease, and other risk factors such as their ability to better use water, fertilizer, and higher yields.
The views expressed reflect the many concerns in farm conservation. The concern of the farmers to maintain production levels and income often seems incompatible with those whose focus is on the maintenance of viable and sustainable ecosystems and maintaining genetic diversity. Exploring and understanding these different concerns is an essential starting point for answering some of the key questions about the implementation of "on farm" conservation and the role of local cultivators in sustainable development.
This comprehensive book addresses current and key issues associated with genetic diversity. Contributions to this book have been solicited with the aim of solidifying and extending our knowledge of what is taking place - and what could take place - in the field.

An essential, timely contribution to crop science studies........2001-01-05
Genes In The Field: On-Farm Conservation Of Crop Diversity is a comprehensive collection of papers focusing on agricultural conservation and diversity issues from around the world. Genetic diversity is critically important to individual farmers and farming communities for several reasons, chief of which is to prevent catastrophic disease and pest infestations wiping out agricultural resources and productivity. Regional and local farm seed variety has been reduced in recent decades because of such factors as increased population, agricultural science and technology, and the integration of the many divers cultures of the world. Genes In The Field discuses key conservation strategies, features numerous case studies with an international perspective, and focuses on policy and institutional issues. A benchmark publication, Genes In The Field is an essential and timely contribution to crop science, horticultural, and agricultural policy and practices studies, reading lists, and library reference collections.

Book Description
The genetic combinations found in plants are the basis for plant breeding programs, which are essential to the security of our present and future food supply. This book explains what these genetic resources are, how they are handled, and why they should be safely conserved for the future. The authors also explore the applications of this research to political and operational programs in all parts of the world and its impact on the conservation of biodiversity, ecosystem rehabilitation, and the future health of our planet.

Description:
Island populations have a much higher risk of extinction than their mainland counterparts for a number of reasons. Particular concern has been voiced that gene flow and hybridization between agricultural crops and native plant species may exacerbate their precarious position, especially if the gene flow occurs from crops developed through recombinant DNA technologies. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and vertical gene transfer (VGT) are the two possible ways for gene flow and introgression to occur. VGT is more likely to facilitate gene transfer between agricultural crops and native plant species, although this too is dependent on a variety of factors. In this critical review phylogenetic tribal boundaries were used as a limit to hybridization potential. Overlap was found between agricultural crops and native species in four tribes: Heliantheae, Gossypieae, Solaneae, and Phaseoleae. In each tribe the factors which increase and decrease the likelihood of hybridization were evaluated and distribution analyses performed. In general, it is concluded that hybridization potentials are low for most species (except Gossypium tomentosum that is known to hybridize with its cultivated relatives), however, small scale pollination studies should be performed for each tribe to quantify the risk and to better manage populations of native species.

Beautiful Pics, Interesting subjects, Really from the Heart........1999-04-17
Absolutely a gem. It was written by Ron Fisher, who has worked with the National Geographic Society for over 30 years. This is a book about the beauty of America's plains and prairies. Every page is glossy, and it is FULL of Wonderful Color pics! It conducts interviews with the real people of America. Goes into the culture and preparing of farming, talks about the training of the work, the animals required, and the history of America's farmlands. A must have for anyone who wants to learn what America used to be about!

The de Nemethy Method.......2003-11-10
Bertalan de Nemethy was coach of the US Equestrian Show Jumping Team for 25 years. His approaches work. This book is an invaluable guide for anyone who wants to know how to start a horse in jumping training and get good results. But it is far more than that. In less than 170 pages de Nemethy explains how to sit a horse correctly - and why - how to work the horse in the various gaits, how to start a young horse so that he will be supple and balanced, how to do ground work, and how to start and work successfully with a young or a more experienced horse over jumps. Many more pages have been written on all of these subjects, but de Nemethy manages to say it all clearly and briefly. The key to ones success in using this book is that it contains numerous wonderful photographs as well as diagrams and exact information on what exercises to use, what distances and heights to work with, and how the horse is likely to react to each phase of the schooling. Every element in the experience of the horse and rider is detailed and explained. It is a shame, for both riders and horses, that this book is not available at a reasonable price; in the last month I have advised three people to buy it, and I can think of several more whom I would give it to, if the base price were not upwards of $300! Thank goodness I had the sense to buy it when I did!
This provides a wonderful method for riding and jumping........1998-06-16
If you want to do it right and classically, de Nemethy's methods are the way to go. Try to get your hands on this book - it helps you correctly teach the horse to jump and sets him up for success.
De Nemethy emphasizes the basics and has a systematic approach to training the horse to jump reliably and confidently. The book is not complex and not filled with lots of esoteric stuff. It is clear, practical and sound. Do it right so you won't have to do it over ...
Customer Reviews:
One of the best..........2007-09-15
equestrian-related books I have read. Most of it confirmed what I already knew (but its always nice to know you're doing it right), but the tidbits of "new" stuff were invaluable. And I found it emphasized three main points 1) establish and maintain forwardness, 2) take your time to do it right, don't take short cuts, and 3) the horse's well-being (both mentally and physically) is paramount.
I also very much enjoyed the final section on the Spanish Riding School, including how they train the Airs and the history of the School. One warning: it will likely be dry for those not truly interested in producing a well-trained, very responsive mount. I also tried to read it in small doses, so I could process the information. But it is a MUST for all dressage riders.
Complete training of horse and rider.......2007-07-16
Classic that deserves to be on every horseowner's bookshelf. Wished I'd have read this gem long ago.
Recommended!.......2007-01-10
As a beginner to classical dressage, I found this book explained very clearly and logically how things should be done. I recommend this book to anyone that is curious about classical dressage!!
Classis Horsemanship Instruction.......2006-07-12
This is one of those "must have" reference books on horsemanship. I'm one of those riders who consider this book a "bible". It is quite technical in some ways, but provides straightforward rules to the art of horsemanship. I apply Podhajsky's advice in my riding every time I climb aboard. The best thing I've gotten from the book is the idea that practice is the most important way to apply these principles....and always, calm, forward & straight.
NOT for beginners.......2006-04-22
This is one of the all time great books for people who are ready to leave the shallows of horsemanship and begin to learn how to ride correctly and train their horse correctly.
Alois Podhajsky was one of the great horsemen of the twentith century and his works are an awesome body of information every serious horse person should read.

If you know that it pays to look a gift horse in the mouth, but aren't sure what to look for, The Horseless Rider is just the book you're looking for. Whether you're looking for a job in your local stables or an occasional low-cost hack, you'll find plenty of information to get the equine experience you seek, without having to invest in the expense of ownership. Throughout the book, author Barbara Burn provides education about the general care of horses aimed at beginners. Chances are that even experienced riders will learn from reading these parts; as Burn says, "it never ceases to amaze me how many horseless riders seem to believe that horses were born with tack in place." From proper trail etiquette to approaching your first ride, Burn tells you what to expect, what to hope for, and how you can make the best of any situation. Public stables can vary greatly in quality, and she has useful tips about checking for saddle sores, matching temperament to skill level, and gathering information about a specific horse's preferences and history. She cautions readers to be honest about their skill; anything else can lead to both embarrassment and injury.
Her horse-seeking suggestions range from basics like paying for lessons to seeking a job at a public stable or riding camp. More subtle ideas involve research--you will be surprised at the number of privately owned horses in search of more exercise, once you know where to look for them. Owners are always happy to have a volunteer stall-mucker; if you're willing to get dirty once a week, you may be well rewarded. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
The practical guide for people who cannot or choose not to own their own horse--revised and updated.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Read.......2007-10-03
One of the biggest problems I have with books written for equine enthusiasts is the effort it takes to read them. Most of us don't have time to sit down and read technical books for hours on end. While there is a lot of information to gain, you first have to comprehend it before you can commit it to memory or use. This book is opposite of anything I have read or tried to read recently. There were sections of it that I didn't want to put it down. I find that extremely rare and priceless. I'm done Christmas shopping for my horseless rider friends, they're getting this book!
Fun and Lively!.......2004-11-15
Being an experienced (but currently horseless) rider I loved this book! It's a wonderful celebration of everything that a horseless rider has gone through or dealt with. The author's stories of investigating a potential stable had me laughing from experience; the author seems to have found that not all barns with stunning white fencing are always worth their price.
I personally wouldn't really recommend this to a person who has ridden for less than five years because some of its advice will probably cause problems with other riders or stables. From my perspective the book was too quick to recommend readers to report to the ASPCA any stables with a horse that appeared to be thin. Some horses are "hard keepers" and will tend to look like that, they aren't always being neglected or abused. Additionally, the recommendations to "train" other people's horses for them while riding them will quite possibly not be appreciated by the owners if the horseless rider has not undergone extensive (and good) riding instruction themselves. My point is, unless you've been riding for a while, you wouldn't know any differently and might get yourself into some interpersonal relationship trouble.
Regardless, I loved this book and the wonderful way of writing that the author had and would not hesitate to read it again and celebrate memories of being a "horseless" rider.
Horseless people, you MUST own if its the last one you get.......2003-10-11
This is awesome. It tells about how to choose a good stable, how to be safe with other's horses, how to groom and care for horses, how to inspect tack, how to make you've got liability for borrowing a horse--plus humorous insights into the horseless. Adressed to the normal, horse-crazy public, this is a must have!
Packed with invaluable, practical ideas.......2001-09-11
Barbara Burn's The Horseless Rider provides a guide to riding, showing and enjoying other people's horses. From analyzing a stable's qualities to taking different approaches with different horses, this is packed with invaluable, practical ideas.
Inspiring for the horseless.......1998-03-22
This book nourished me through many dark days of horselessness, and helped me even see it as an advantage. This is an outstanding book for new riders who want to know how far they can go without the committment of becoming an owner (as far as you want!), or for those who already know they want it all but do not have the resources to have a horse of their own.

Book Description
An epic coming-of-age story
She suspects her boyfriend of cheating and her best friend of betrayal. But that's not the worst of sixteen-year-old Callie Weston's sorrows. The unveiling of not just one but two of her mother’s deceptions has driven Callie to despair. With an unlikely companion, she heads off into the wild and beautiful Madras Mountains to capture the spirit of her great-great-
great-great-grandmother Calico Bright, a nineteenth-century frontierswoman and family legend. But in so doing, she gets more than she bargains for and discovers Calico Bright in the unlikeliest of places.
The Return of Calico Bright forces its protagonist to confront not only her own adolescent sorrows but the seamy underbelly of a nation’s identity, in which racial hatred lurks in surprising places. The stakes are high and the outcome critical, but in the crucible of raw experience Callie emerges from her ancestor’s heroic shadow in ways she never would have imagined.
