          Product Description

The Miller GAAS Guide describes the engagement standards, practices and procedures in use today--including Statements on Auditing Standards and their Interpretations, Statements on Standards for Attestation Engagements and their Interpretations, and Statements on Standards on Accounting and Review Services and their Interpretations. The book's sensible organization follows the arrangement of the AICPA's Professional Standards. Within each section, an organizational structure is used that is both simple and insightful. Each section begins with "Authoritative Pronouncements", listing the auditing-related documents that are pertinent to the section. An Overview is provided, followed by a Promulgated Procedures Checklist that identifies the essential professional responsibilities that must be satisfied in each part of an engagement. Under Analysis and Application of Reporting Standards, readers will find a concise discussion of how each specific promulgated procedure should be supplied. Finally, many of the sections have Practitioner's Aids to help apply the promulgated standards to specific engagements. Within each section, readers are alerted to key guidance to help plan engagements. This guidance is classified as a Risk Assessment Point, an Engagement Strategy, a Planning Aid Reminder, or an Observation. To help sensitive CPAs to issues affecting auditor reponsibility for fraud, this edition contains "Fraud Pointers" that integrate fraud issues related to a particular professional standard's requirement. This should aid CPAs in considering fraud risks throughout the entire audit engagement. Also, to help CPAs stay abreat of potential changes affecting AICPA professional standards, this edition contains new overviews of outstanding exposure drafts. These overviews, labeled "Important Notice for 2006 Engagements," highlight key elements of possible changes to existing professional standards. All of the exhibit material in the book appears on the free companion CD-ROM that comes with Miller GAAS Guide. The sample letters, reports, and checklists found in the text can be printed and customized to meet all of your auditing needs. The Guide also includes a cross-reference to the original pronouncements and a detailed topical index. The Miller GAAS Guide meets accounting industry standards overseen by the peer review system and contains a document covering the peer review of this book.

                      Book Description

Like American business executives, many government leaders realize that a continuation of the traditional management of objectives approach will achieve failure. Those willing to change are searching for a new approach to managing government. The authors of Teams in Government believe the best approach is Total Quality Management (TQM). Why TQM? Because it consists of gradual, unending improvement activities that involve every person in the organization in a totally integrated effort to improve performance and quality at every level and to increase customer satisfaction. The government has two types of customers-the person who receives the benefits of its services and the taxpayer who supplies the money to fuel an efficient and effective operation. If you are looking for the tools and techniques that will enable you to deliver government services that not only meet but exceed the expectations of your customers, to do it right the first time, you need Teams in Government. Any government organization that wants to switch from focusing solely upon meeting the needs of the bureaucracy (primarily on meeting objectives and quotas designed by the upper echelon), who are furthest from your customers, will find TQM to be extremely effective.

                        Book Description

Winner of the 1990 Best Book Award from the New England Council on Latin American Studies

This study of Bolivia uses Cochabamba as a laboratory to examine the long-term transformation of native Andean society into a vibrant Quechua-Spanish-mestizo region of haciendas and smallholdings, towns and villages, peasant markets and migratory networks caught in the web of Spanish imperial politics and economics. Combining economic, social, and ethnohistory, Brooke Larson shows how the contradictions of class and colonialism eventually gave rise to new peasant, artisan, and laboring groups that challenged the evolving structures of colonial domination. Originally published in 1988, this expanded edition includes a new final chapter that explores the book’s implications for understanding the formation of a distinctive peasant political culture in the Cochabamba valleys over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

                          Book Description

Cochabamba is the principal agricultural region of Bolivia, with a peasantry that has been especially active in small-scale commercial agriculture and marketing. Focusing on this region, Brooke Larson supplies the first long-term historical view of rural society in colonial and nineteenthy2Dcentury Bolivia. While examining the impact of mercantile colonialism during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, she offers an important corrective to the "world-systems" approach to agrarian transformation. Weak Andean resistance and the emerging interregional market created extraordinary opportunities for Europeans to turn Cochabamba into an agrarian hinterland of Potosi: Professor Larson locates the dynamic of this kind of historical change not only in the global forces of commercial capitalism but also in the local tensions and conflicts among Andean peasants, Spanish landowners, and the colonial state.

Combining economic history and ethnohistory, the author shows how the contradictions of class and colonialism gave rise to new social forces from below that both accommodated and challenged the evolving structures of domination. She argues that the adaptive vitality of the Cochabamba peasantry gradually undermined the economic power of the hacendado class and the moral authority of the Bourbon state, with landlords and colonial administrators resorting to new forms of exploitation in the late colonial period. The book then examines the social consequences of these agrarian patterns for the region and nation in the late nineteenth century.

This unique atlas is the first to present maps of the structure that exists in the distribution in space of the nearby galaxies. The atlas has three groups of maps. The first group illustrates the distribution of 2,367 known galaxies on the plane of the sky. The second group is a representation of the three-dimensional characteristics of the same group of galaxies. The third suite of maps situates the nearby galaxies within the structure on a much larger cosmic scale.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on ski conditioning.......2007-01-18

This is a good book - a relatively inexpensive book to help know how to get in shape for skiing season. I also purchased Fitskiing (hardback) which is more exhaustive (and was more what I was looking for), but this book is worth the cost.

4 out of 5 stars Flexibility - yes! Fitness and conditioning - not really..........2003-06-22

It is well established that stretching improves agility and quickness of skiers. Resistance exercises strengthen the muscles, but they also shorten them. Stretching makes muscles longer again. This leads to flexibility (greater range of motion in the joints) which allows to get the most out of your training program and helps to ski longer, in better control, with less fatigue. Many books in the past emphasized primarily physical training during off-season period. In the last few years, flexibility and stretches got increasingly large attention. This book is entirely focused on stretches. It contains a well-illustrated 10-20 minute warm-up and stretching routine, and several additional excersises to improve balance. The exercises are very easy, and can be done, e.g., in the morning before work. They help to wake up and to feel better. Additionally, there is a section on warm-up and stretches recommended for the slopes before skiing (partly with the skis on), and a few exercises on skis to improve balance.

The authors emphasize that it is important to do these stretches every day since the result will be nil if you do them irregularly. However, it is not quite clear what kind of progress you can expect if you do them every day. While I appreciate the importance of stretches, I strongly suspect that the result may be rather insignificant if you do these routines every day, but nothing besides them. Stretches obviously work best when they are combined with more vigorous exercise program, such as strength training or aerobics. It is a pity that this book includes very few of those - if it did, it could be an indispensable source for pre-season conditioning. The good part, however, that practically all suggested exercises can be done at home on the floor or standing against the wall, with the equipment which can be purchased at a local harware store, or with no equipment at all.

The subtitle of the book (see the bottom of the book cover) is misleading as it says "flexibility, fitness, and conditioning for better skiing". Flexibility is definitely there, and is very well written; fitness and conditioning - sorry, guys, I did not see much of it in the book. Four stars.

I'm a personal trainer working in a New York City gym and when a client of mine wanted some exercises for his favorite sport, I did a search and found this book. It has been excellent. All I needed to tailor a program for him, and even exercises he can do on the mountain in full gear. Clear, honest and effective. I highly recommend it.

                                                      All-hour study fests . . . all-night parties . . .

Going away to college means total independence and freedom. Unless of course your freshman year is taped and televised for all the world to watch. On uncensored cable.

Sweet and normal Ally Cavanaugh is one of five freshpeople shacking up on In the House, a reality show filmed on her college campus. (As if school isn't panic-inducing enough!) The cameras stalk her like paparazzi, but they also capture the fun that is new friends, old crushes, and learning to live on your own. Sure, the camera adds ten pounds, but with the freshman fifteen a given anyway, who cares? Ally's got bigger issues -- like how her long-distance bf can watch her loopy late-night "episode" with a certain housemate. . . .

                                                      Freshman year on film.

                                                      It's outrageous.

                                                      It's juicy.

And like all good reality TV,

                                                      it's impossible to turn off.

For anyone who's ever watched even one episode of a reality TV show, this is a fun behind-the-scenes peek at a college student who signs up for her life to be broadcast over the air.

The action moves along at a great pace, and the dialogue and situations are all very realistic. Even though you understand that Ally, the main character, got herself into this situation by wanting to be on this reality show in the first place, you immediately sympathize with her as well for having a difficult time blending in with the rest of the campus while there's a cameraman following her around at all times. The book is funny, witty, and difficult to put down.

Some authors seem to have a tough time getting inside a teenager's mind, but Lauren Barnholdt does this beautifully. Ally is a well-rounded character with the same insecurities and flaws that all people have (though not neccessarily the same ones...). It is obvious to everyone but Ally that her relationship with her boyfriend is doomed, but you still understand why she wants to be oblivious to these problems.

The book is told, alternately, in "NOW" and "THEN" sections; part of it is Ally reflecting back on the whole experience, and the other part is her narrating her life as it unfolds.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, breezy read. My only complaint is that I wish the ending would have been a little more all-encompassing. I want to know what happens next!

Being a college freshman is hard enough. There's homework to worry about, the dreaded freshman fifteen, guys, parties, and a lot of other things. When Ally Cavanaugh starts college she has one other thing to worry about, that most don't have to: cameras.

Ally's every move during her first semester at college is taped for the popular reality show, In the House. At first, it seems like a dream come true. Ally's show is being broadcast nationwide; she's practically a celebrity! She gets to live in an awesome house with her roommates, who don't seem too bad.

But soon, things start to turn around. Ally's faraway boyfriend is acting really distant, and she thinks that she may be developing feelings for her hunky roommate. Her escapades at a fraternity party are recorded for the entire world to see, including her parents!

In the House is Ally's reality check; how tough life can be sometimes, but to take it in strides. You never know what great things are in store for you around the corner!

REALITY CHICK by Lauren Barnholdt was a fantastic read. It was fun, fresh, and fabulous, with a great concept and flawless reality. REALITY CHICK is a must read for those looking to lighten up the new school year!

There's quite a bit of intelligent analysis and thought-provoking insight packed into the pages of Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, which is a little surprising considering how darn stupid most of Klosterman's subject matter actually is. Klosterman, one of the few members of the so-called "Generation X" to proudly embrace that label and the stereotypical image of disaffected slackers that often accompanies it, takes the reader on a witty and highly entertaining tour through portions of pop culture not usually subjected to analysis and presents his thoughts on Saved by the Bell, Billy Joel, amateur porn, MTV's The Real World, and much more. It would be easy in dealing with such subject matter to simply pile on some undergraduate level deconstruction, make a few jokes, and have yourself a clever little book. But Klosterman goes deeper than that, often employing his own life spent as a member of the lowbrow target demographic to measure the cultural impact of his subjects. While the book never quite lives up to the use of the word "manifesto" in the title (it's really more of a survey mixed with elements of memoir), there is much here to entertain and illuminate, particularly passages on the psychoses and motivations of breakfast cereal mascots, the difference between Celtic fans and Laker fans, and The Empire Strikes Back. Sections on a Guns n' Roses tribute band, The Sims, and soccer feel more like magazine pieces included to fill space than part of a cohesive whole. But when you're talking about a book based on a section of cultural history so reliant on a lack of attention span, even the incongruities feel somehow appropriate. --John Moe

                                                        Book Description

Countless writers and artists have spoken for a generation, but no one has done it quite like Chuck Klosterman. With an exhaustive knowledge of popular culture and an almost effortless ability to spin brilliant prose out of unlikely subject matter, Klosterman attacks the entire spectrum of postmodern America: reality TV, Internet porn, Pamela Anderson, literary Jesus freaks, and the real difference between apples and oranges (of which there is none). And don't even get him started on his love life and the whole Harry-Met-Sally situation.

Whether deconstructing Saved by the Bell episodes or the artistic legacy of Billy Joel, the symbolic importance of The Empire Strikes Back or the Celtics/Lakers rivalry, Chuck will make you think, he'll make you laugh, and he'll drive you insane -- usually all at once. Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs is ostensibly about art, entertainment, infotainment, sports, politics, and kittens, but -- really -- it's about us. All of us. As Klosterman realizes late at night, in the moment before he falls asleep, "In and of itself, nothing really matters. What matters is that nothing is ever 'in and of itself.'" Read to believe.

Countless writers and artists have spoken for a generation, but no one has done it quite like Chuck Klosterman -- with an exhaustive knowledge of popular culture and a seemingly effortless ability to spin brilliant prose out of unlikely subject matter. Whether deconstructing Saved by the Bell episodes or the artistic legacy of Billy Joel, the symbolic importance of The Empire Strikes Back or the Celtics/Lakers rivalry of the 1980s, Chuck will make you think, he'll make you laugh, and he'll drive you insane -- usually all at once. Drunken Real World skank footage is inherently worthless. Saved By the Bell storylines are inherently worthless. Tribute band road stories are inherently worthless. You'd think a book about disposable pop culture would be as worthless as its subject matter, but this book trancends all that. It is the perfect example of the whole being more than the sum of its parts. This book will frequently force you to stop reading and put it down until you stop laughing. It will also force you to try to get everyone you know within 5 years of your age to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Pop Culture as an example for life.......2007-10-06

Klosterman's book is one of the most enjoyable reads I've found. He cleverly ties items from every end of the pop culture spectrum, from sports, to music, to tv, to porn and spins them all into a clever web which at the end begins to look a lot more like you and I than the characters on tv.

Laugh out loud funny, but well written. And spot on analogies.

                                                        4 out of 5 stars Worth skimming.......2007-10-01

I recommend borrowing this book from your hip literary friend, who already owns it. It has some very funny chapters, and some of the interludes between chapters are truly great. However, it's really unsatisfying in large doses; after finishing a lot of the chapters, I just felt that I had wasted my time. Klosterman has a nice dry wit, and he's good at BSing about quirky topics. But that's really not enough for me to buy a book. Skim it at the bookstore or get it from the library; this is not a book that you'll ever want to reread.

2 out of 5 stars An oxymoron for Gen Xers.......2007-09-16

I decided to read this book after considering the many positive reviews along with the accolades of several independent book sellers. I shouldn't have. I'm not going to say this book is bad, but its certainly not anywhere near being good either.

This book is a self-described manifesto, which it is not. It is the inane ramblings of someone who does not suffer from lycantrophy. It is dysfunctional, poorly written, and is essentially about nothing at all. I liken it to a Seinfeld episode, in print form, but without the distraction that comes from actual humor or entertainment value. In hind site, I'm starting to wish Klosterman did suffer from lycantrophy.

If you don't believe me, I will let a Chuck Klosterman quote from the book serve as a one line synopsis:

"Do you not see what I am no longer not saying to you? If so-congratulations!"

Reading this book is like having a long conversation about life with the most sarcastic/ funny person you know. Klosterman is easy to relate to, even when you haven't got the slightest idea what he is talking about.
