Product Description
The space vehicle spectaculars of recent years have been revealing the full scope and beauty of our own solar system but have also shown that a growing number of other stars too have planetary bodies orbiting around them. The study of these systems is just beginning. It seems that our galaxy contains untold numbers of planets, and presumably other galaxies will be similar to our own. Our solar system contains life, on Earth: do others as well? Such questions excite modern planetary scientists and astro-biologists. This situation is a far cry from ancient times when the five planets that can be seen from Earth without a telescope were called the "wandering stars". This notebook-cum-workbook provides an introduction to those profound and still-developing modern studies. Written by an expert in the field, it is pitched at a level suitable for beginning students. It is designed particularly for self-study but can also provide background support for students attending lecture courses or teachers developing such courses. The reader is encouraged to add to the arguments of the book as the subject develops. A special feature here is a substantial glossary of terms and people which serves as a starting point for further entries. Wandering Stars is a key to unlock the door to an exciting and fascinating universe which is still the object of active discovery.

Dated, But Great Pictures.......2007-05-19
My son checked this out of his preschool library. We read it as a family. It has great pictures, although a little old looking. The text is not something a 5-year-old can read, but it is easy to understand if you read it to the child. It was published in 1988, so the information is somewhat dated.
Customer Reviews:
A nice overview in a Q&A format.......2004-02-06
Although slotted for the age range 9-12, I read it aloud to my 6 year old and he understood and enjoyed the book. The format is question and answer, which you may or may not like. We found it fine, as many address common questions. The answers are detailed with many statistics and what some would call "trivia". The tone of the writing is not patronizing and it seems to cover just enough information for an overview.
The subjects covered are: stars, our sun, explanation of "sun rising and setting", galaxies, the Milky Way, constellations, planets, orbits of plants, earths rotation, earths composition, Earth's atmosphere vs. space, our moon, asteroids, comets, meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites, is there life elsewhere and what are some unanswered questions we still have? This is a good overview. Note that each planet is discussed in one paragraph. I feel that for a more thorough study we will need to delve into each planet a bit more, but this book was enough information on all the other topics it covers. The picture books on each planet by Seymour Simon are wonderful for getting more information on each planet and for their great illustrations.
The illustrations in this book are drawings, which are nice but not as great as some of the wonderful photographs that are available. I am granting this 4 stars due to the illustrations being all drawings, and because of the lack of detail on each planet. I suggest supplementing this book with at least browsing through some other books such as coffee table books or other adult books about space so that the child can get a different perspective and to appreciate the beauty that is captured in our modern high tech photography.

Book Description
This remarkable new book is for everyone interested in the origin and evolution of the universe. It relates the history of chemicals, from the earliest generation of the light elements in the Big Bang, to their transformation into heavier atoms and their subsequent molecular evolution into
myriad forms, including life on Earth. Spanning both organic and inorganic chemical combinations, the survey thus covers billions of years and involves evidence coming from the analysis of long-extinct as well as ongoing processes. The techniques used in this fascinating study are also described.
They include the analysis of many sources: isotopes from ancient nuclear reactions and still-active radionuclides; molecules from space--frozen in meteorites or continuously generated in vast interstellar clouds; and the detritus of volcanic and geochemical activity. This is also the story of the
origin of life, which can be biochemically detected through the modern descendants of early microbial life-forms and from laboratory experiments in prebiotic chemistry. The author also describes the history of ideas in the study of chemistry and the development of modern theories on chemical
evolution. This is a highly readable account of central issues and ideas in modern science that will be read with absorbing interest by a wide range of students, researchers, and general readers.
Book Description
A new edition of the only guide to detail all the known routes on 570 peaks in the Sierras, thoroughly updated, with 60+ pages of new material covering 80 new routes, and new photos throughout.
The diverse terrain and unspoiled wilderness of the High Sierra makes it one of the best places in the world for "the practice of mountains" - advanced hiking, cross-country rambling, peak bagging, rock and ice climbing, and ski touring. Here it is possible to begin a hike in the desert of the eastern Sierra, scale rock and ice to a mountain top, and end in the lush redwood groves of the western slopes.
The most comprehensive resource on this explorer's paradise, The High Sierra details all the major and minor routes to the area and covers approach roads, trails, and cross-country and climbing routes. Sections called "Wrinkles" provide alternative and lesser-known linkage routes between and within regions.
Customer Reviews:
Great guide to the High Sierra.......2007-08-15
i have loved looking through this book and cant wait to go out and see some of the territory it covers
Are you a technical climber or a hiker?.......2007-05-28
Are you a technical climber going to or dreaming about the High Sierra? If so, this book is for you with plenty of details on mountain ascents. But, peruse another book if you a hiker, wanting to know in advance the sights to see, altitude to gain and miles to cover on the passes and trails of the HIgh Sierra.
THE High Sierra Hiking/Climbing Encyclopedia.......2005-07-13
This massive tome is oriented to those who really want to stray from the beaten path and adventure the Sierra Nevada. The book covers the Sequoia/Kings Canyon region to realms north of Yosemite. Trails, cross-country treks, mountain passes and peaks not found in other guides receive mention here. The comprehensiveness of this makes it a singular achievement that stands out from the many other books on this region. Be forewarned though, because of the sheer scope here, a great deal of information can not be listed for each topic. If you plan to hike an established trail, you would be better served by any number of other guides out there. Secor's text is oriented more for the Sierra veteran, particularly the climber, and mountain peaks seem to get a bit more space here. Nonetheless, there is still plenty here for the non-technical backcountry adventurer. Despite the encyclopedic style of this thing, it's not altogether dry. Sample text: "The only thing 'enchanted' about Enchanted Gorge is its name. This is a difficult cross-country route..."
One clearly needs good topographic maps handy to make use of this book. Even so, the book could stand to have a few more maps. Furthermore, the text descriptions ought do a better job telling one where a particular entry would be located on a map (abbreviated UTM coordinates are sometimes as good as it gets). Nonetheless, this is the only widely-available book that describes so many remote corners of the Sierra. This book is kind of an updated and far expanded version of Steve Roper's classic "Climber's Guide To The High Sierra", whose "Sierra High Route" book is a great source as well.
a must have.......2005-06-16
This is THE guide to mountaineering and peak-bagging in the High Sierra. All others pale in comparison.
Some here seem to bemoan the fact that topos and route information are not included for each of the hundreds of peaks in this book. No one guide could possibly do that, and if you're going to climb a peak, I'd really hope you'd do a little more research than just the write-up from just one book anyway.
This guide is a perfect starting point for any of the thousands of peaks up there and is probably the only place where peaks other than the 14ers and homes of classical technical routes get mentioned.
Not For Novices.......2005-02-11
Secor's Tome really is a wonderful book for experienced hikers with routefinding and rock scrambling skills. I can sit for hours with topo maps and his book, looking up peaks and routes. But be careful if you're a beginner (or experienced only on-trail) when reading the reviews that say this is the "Bible" for the Sierra or "the book to own if you're only going to own one". Beginners could easily get themselves into more than they bargained for.

gotta have it!.......2007-01-07
i have been collecting the guiness book of records since 2001. i got mine out the other day and noticed i was missing the 2006 edition. i just about went crazy...so if ur looking for things to collect these books are great for any age...even me at age 16 =D
A must have book!.......2006-11-10
I love this book because it has lots of pictures and a mind-boggling list of feats in ever imaginable category! It's a great book to just have lying around! No other records book comes close! This is a must have book!
Most People Will Like This Book.......2006-06-15
I especially like the machinery and sports because it has a lot of information about breaking records. The only thing I don't like is there is only a little bit about each subject.
My daughter loved it!.......2006-03-22
My 10 year old daughter loved the book! She was amazed at all the facts and photos. Great gift for anyone!
An essential reference tool........2006-03-14
Whilst some readers will always buy the latest edition of this book because they are interested in the largest, tallest, fastest or whatever, personally I have always found this book to be a first class reference source.
It was from the Guinness Book of records that I learned that the largest Turtle known to man was a giant Leatherback Turtle which (to my great surprise) was washed up on the shores of Ireland - and "not" some Caribbean country as one might expect.
Of course, not all the records are repeated from one edition into the next or each book would be identical except for any new records achieved during the past 12 months. For this reason, the reader might need to collect a few editions of the book in order to have as good a collection of records as possible.
Just a few loose thoughts really.

Book Description
Hurt and angry after his brother’s tragic death, 17-year-old Nick escapes the pressures of his family in Vancouver by working as a research assistant for a conservation group on the beautiful Point Reyes coastline of California. There he meets Marty, and, to his surprise, finds himself drawn to her quiet, intense manner. Shy and intuitive, Marty discovers that she is able to communicate with a mother gray whale forced to summer nearby with her sick calf. When Nick and Marty learn that the conservation project is a front for a scheme to plunder the treasure of Sir Francis Drake’s sunken frigate, a tense confrontation occurs. Love, anger, hatred, and forgiveness fill this many-layered, deeply felt novel as it builds toward an unforgettable climax. This riveting environmental tale about two teenagers in love and their bond with a mother whale and her baby was written by award-winning Welwyn Wilton Katz, one of Canada's leading novelists for children. “A whale sings, history repeats itself, and two teenagers find what they most need in this haunting, complex story.” — Kirkus Reviews “The major characters, although battered, come through alive, and perhaps more whole, to face their future. Intriguing.”— School Library Journal

Best Book.......2002-01-18
this is one of the best books i have ever read and i am a book gobbler this book has a excellent plot and is very inresting just dont read it too often or else you will memorize it and it will lose all feeling
Whalesinger.......2000-04-20
absolutely inspiring for anyone, any age who loves whales and believes we communicate
A powerful book.......1999-10-03
I first read this book in 7th grade, and I continue to pick it up and read it even now in College... Katz does an amazing job with her characters in this book, as well as others I've read by her. She captures the essence of the worries and angst a teen goes through. Adding her slant, the depression and isolation that the young girl feels, is her telepathic/empathic connection to a mother whale. This amazing book connects earths pollution problem, teenage life, and the idea of first love in a compelling format! READ THIS BOOK!!!!
Very good book.......1999-01-18
I haven't read the other books by Katz, but this one was very good. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I was the first to review this book and I hope that I'm not the only one.
