Easy to understand, really works.......1999-04-25
This book gives a good explanation of the different laws and was easy to read. I followed some of the advice and was able to prosecute my case without a lawyer. I obviously saved lots of money.

Book Description
"In this fine book, Mary Neth looks at the economic and cultural world of farm people... She writes from the inside, showing us its attractions and especially its dependence on family and engagement with community... Her book, like the farmers she writes about, defends a world that does not share the dominant American values. She is to be congratulated. She has done a thorough, thoughtful, and provocative job of it."--Annette Atkins, American Historical Review
Between 1900 and 1940 American family farming gave way to what came to be called agribusiness. Government policies, consumer goods aimed at rural markets, and the increasing consolidation of agricultural industries all combined to bring about changes in farming strategies that had been in use since the frontier era. Because the Midwestern farm economy played an important part in the relations of family and community, new approaches to farm production meant new patterns in interpersonal relations as well. In Preserving the Family Farm Mary Neth focuses on these relations -- of gender and community -- to shed new light on the events of this crucial period.
"Neth does not romanticize the hard work of farming in its less industrial stage; nor does she smooth over the deep division of class, race and ethnicity that existed in rural communities. Her careful and very human portrayal of the impact of these circumstances on the lives of farm women and men provides insight into the complexity of such communities, illustrating how the intersection of home, work and community is constantly changing, negotiable and gendered." -- Cornelia Butler Flora, Women's Review of Books
"Preserving the Family Farm is well written, meticulously researched, and extremely useful for anyone interested in agricultural, rural, midwestern, or women's history. Neth does a good job of making abstract issues personal... Neth has done much to refocus rural history and give it a richness that it should, but often does not, have."--Pamela Riney-Kehrberg, The Journal of American History

Learn about the past thoughts of our solar system!.......2003-09-03
I remember back in the seventies when I rescued this book from being pelted by the rain from the back yard of my 6th grade teacher. I brought it home, dried it out, and read it over and again throughout the summer. Asimov's writing, particularly in the area of science is exhilarating, adventurous, deliberate, and amusing. His explanations of astrophysics, and planetary geology enhance the experience of black and white photos/diagrams/captions even though many of the facts, figures and labels may be out of date. And, it certainly did not stop me from reading it again this summer- 30 years later.
Asimov on planetary geology and atmospherics.......2003-06-22
I still remember how excited I was after finding this book back in the early seventies. Up to that time it was the only popular book on planetary geology. I remember that the section on Mars was especially interesting and extensive. Of course, thorough as always, Asimov also speculated on the nature of the environments of the other terrestrial planets and the moons of the gas giants. It was quite well illustrated with black and white illustrations.
This book fueled an interest in planetary geology in me that persists to the present day. I'm sorry that I let my old copy slip away somewhere along the line.

From the supplier: There is a wave of reactionary reporting in environmental journalism following the unquestioning acceptance of environmentalists' concerns in the early 1990s. The 1995 Earth Day anniversary encountered an extremely skeptical media, which seems willing to be manipulated by lobbyists of polluting companies. While the contrarian reporting emerged as a healthy alternative to earlier environmental reporting that lacked objectivity, it has become anti-environmental and lacks balance.

Book Description
This is the first guide to identifying the lichen species that grow in the White Mountains, Green Mountains, Adirondacks, and nearby alpine and rugged coastal environments. Based on extensive field work and research, the book explains the fascinating biology of lichens, which thrive where other plants can't survive, and provides full-color magnified photographs, a color bar for identification, scientific and common names, descriptive notes and information on growth forms, substrate, reproduction and comparisons to similar species, as well as references, a glossary, and a bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
I'm Lichen this book!.......2005-09-30
It's about time someone put together a hiker-friendly field guide to lichens! And this is a high-quality publication at that. The author included some stunning photos in this guide, and they actually match what you see when hiking around. I love the layout and the easy-to-read nature of the lichen descriptions. I have been fascinated by these little life forms since a friend at grad school took a keen interest in them. With grad school long behind me, I am glad to now finally have this book as my companion.
Good lichen guide.......2005-09-20
Very nice lichen guide. Good color pictures and lots of information that will enable amateurs to identify common alpine lichens. Covers about 60 species - wish it covered more! Money well spent.

Book Description
LOST BALLS is a unique and colorful look at the game of golf from the perspective of the under-celebrated wayward shot. Charles Lindsay's photographs offer a humorous and inquisitive foray into the hazards where golf balls are lost-rough, woods, bunkers, and wetlands-as well as unexpected encounters with wildlife on and off the green. An avid golfer with plenty of experience losing balls, Lindsay photographs his way to the heart of the game with a light touch and an eye for telling details. In the process, he discovers balls ravaged by golfers, gators, and foxes-and lost for over a century.
Customer Reviews:
The best coffee table book in the house.......2007-07-13
This book's photographs are absolutely brilliant! I first saw the book walking through a store and picked it up only to open up to a page where a golf ball was stuck in a pile of poo. I was flipping pages before you knew it and every shot had me smiling, laughing, reminiscing and just really enjoying the photos. If you are a golfer or going to be buying this book for a golfer I am sure they will get as much enjoyment out of it as I have. Everyone comes into our home and I catch them flipping pages on the book and enjoying it. So don't pass this book up, buy it now!
For every golfer.......2007-06-27
I gave my husband Lost Balls for Father's Day and he absolutely loved it. My 16 year old son and I both enjoyed it as well. This book has beautiful pictures - the photography is excellent - that capture some incredible and impossible lies. The scenes are lovely and make one appreciate golf as a form of relaxation. The many precarious positions that are captured make one appreciate golf as an obsession. For those who love and hate this game, this book will be enjoyed.
A book for every golfer.......2007-03-20
I bought one for a friend and another for myself. If you play
golf, you think that maybe the results of some of your own
golf shots may not be so bad. Even if you don't play golf,
the pictures are funny and interesting (as long as it is someone
else's ball). Well worth the money.
Cover misleading.......2007-02-04
The cover indicated unusual scenes on the golf course. The other monthly pictures were rather ordinary.
Great photos.......2007-01-10
I bought this book as a gift for a friend, but ended up sharing it with various family before wrapping it up. It was also the hit of the party when it WAS opened. Very entertaining and a book easy to pick up and look at more than once. A hit for golfers or those who enjoy a photo with a message.

Book Description
Fourteen-year-old Carolina has been through a terrible loss. As she struggles to speak openly to her new boyfriend and to relate to her distant, sad mother, the reader slowly realizes the nature of their shared tragedy. Through letters to her sister and by using her father's camera, Carolina tries to see the past clearly and find a path to an uncharted future. Though she feels she cannot bear any more pain, her strong character sees her through the wrenching changes in her life. Carolina's clear vision and sense of humor help her to find her way and connect to her boyfriend, her mother, and a life with new purpose and hope.
"Williams’s story of family, friendship, and romance is heartfelt and sympathetic. . . . Illustrates the complexities of relationships, especially how appearance and reality can differ." — Booklist
"This is a finely crafted novel in which Williams’s spare, lyrical prose depicts an adolescent blossoming into a thoughtful, caring young woman." — School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
I wish there was a sequel!! :P.......2004-09-24
i randomly picked this book off of my school library and i luv it! It's a sweet story about a girl named Carolina who has to suffer through amny things that we should be glad we have. She has lost a father and an older sister that was like a best friend to her. my absolute favorite part was the end when Carolina caught Mara and Garret. I was grinning, ear to ear, and smirking, litterally scaring the heck out of my family, mentally screaming 'YES!! YES!! IN YOUR FACE!' hahaha. it really is a great book and i thik it'll make u stronger if you'll just walk up to your closest library!
Moving book about dealing with loss.......2003-09-05
Dealing with the loss of loved ones is hard enough, but Carolina is also having to deal with the pains of betrayl and first love. This book handles both topics with great sensitivity and realism. Carolina is a wonderful character who will capture your heart and leave you hoping for a sequel.
Carolina Autumn.......2002-03-10
The book was about a girl named Carolina McKinney. She lives with her mom after her father and sister died in a plane crash. Her character is very emotional and thinks that her father and sister are still alive. She has a boyfriend named Poindexter who lives right next door from her. Her best friend's name is Mara who is a big backstabber...
My favorite part of this book was when Carolina and Poindexter were running and Carolina fell and got hurt then Poindexter helped her get back home. I also like the part when her mother and her were hugging in the middle of the street while it was raining. It was so sweet and I wish that my mother and I can do that too. The only thing I do not like about the book are when Mara flirts with Poindexter a lot! It is not right to do that while your so-called-best-friend is there.
I personally think that people should read the book because it is so wonderful! It touches your heart.
Another Home Run for Carol Lynch Williams!.......2000-10-07
Carol Lynch Williams certainly understands teenagers and knows how to bring them characters they can identify with and learn from. Carolina Autumn is no exception! I read the first chapter aloud to a group of junior high girls taking a Creative Writing class from me, and they laughed in all the right places, then shared the similaries in experience with Carolina as she gets her first bra. I remembered well my own feelings of uncertainty in budding teenage romance and the fears of my best friend "taking him away." A great book to help teenagers deal with death, as well. This book's short length makes it perfect for the reluctant reader.

Book Description
A story of two people in the autumn of their lives. Cassie Jean's checkerboard past only sharpens the realization that she has only two great loves: Bill is one of them, and the other is her painting. This is an old-fashioned love story. There is something about Cassie Jean that is Everywoman and there is something about Everywoman that is Cassie Jean. The story makes you aware that life is never a straight line. The simple act of living in a less-than-perfect world is enough to make our hoped-for straight line turn serpentine. But we make it worse; we always take care to build our own stone walls or chiffon barriers along the way.

JACK PYLE AN HONEST SOUTHERN VOICE.......1999-12-22
Stories of the Blue Ridge Mountains have always been of interest and this one is especially interesting because it explores the clash of cultures when a Florida woman marries a mountain man. Any woman who needs someone to tell her to "go for it" before it's too late will enjoy Cassie Jean's story. Read it, then "chuck it all" and live the life you've dreamed of living.

Funny, colorful, informative, delightfully laid-back!.......2001-02-01
Charley Karnes' "Autumn Across Carolina" is at times hilarious, at times suspenseful, always laid back. The reader will savor every sweaty page of this very personal (and true) adventure story about the fantastic highs and frogs-belly lows of the long-distance bicycle rally. And there's a bonus: If you ever wanted to get the flavor of what North Carolina is REALLY like when you get off those boring interstate highways, this book is sure to satisfy.
