Book Description
The Chicago White Sox's march to the 2005 World Series title was as surprising as it was dramatic, and in Say It's So: The Chicago White Sox's Magical Season, Phil Rogers delivers the inside story of how it came about. Rogers, senior baseball writer for the Chicago Tribune, describes the gamble general manager Ken Williams took in breaking up a powerful but plodding team in favor of one built around pitching, speed and defense. A team, in other words, that could play the game the way manager Ozzie Guillen wanted it played. In Guillen, the Sox found themselves a charismatic, live-wire leader whose every move seemed golden. Rogers provides a front-row view of the eccentric genius the second-year manager displayed in delivering Chicago its first World Series since 1959 and its first Series title since 1917. There's the rock-steady Paul Konerko, whose big bat and steely clubhouse presence carried the team through the postseason. There's the unsung third basemen Joe Crede, whose spectacular fielding and timely hitting on baseball's biggest stage stamped him as a rising star. There's the irascible catcher A.J. Pierzynski, the "Eddie Haskell" of the clubhouse, who found himself smack in the middle of every controversy. There's the fire of Bobby Jenks and the guile of Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez. And finally there's a deep and talented pitching staff that saw the team through its only rough spot of the regular season and then was simply dominant through all three founds of the postseason. The 2005 White Sox were a uniquely multi-cultural group that reflected their city's ethnic melting pot. They truly were Chicago's team--and they gave their fans a truly magical season.
Customer Reviews:
Could have been so much better had production not been so rushed.......2006-05-14
I'll agree with the previous reviewer regarding the hasty and apparently haphazard production of this book, however I feel the book as a whole rated a little better. I also noticed the typos and the repeated paragraph (regarding the 1979 concerts at old Comiskey Park that decimated the playing field), not to mention the chapter ending with an incomplete sentence. One glaring factual error that jumped out at me referred to the 8th inning of World Series Game #4; according to the book, Willie Harris remained at second base after Carl Everett grounded out, when in fact Harris moved up to third base on that play before eventually scoring the decisive run on Jermaine Dye's single. I certainly agree that the relatively poor proofreading job can be attributed to the rush to get the book on the market (and perhaps these errors can be rectified in a subsequent print run), however while this book is not nearly as in-depth as it could have been this is still a pretty good read of an unforgettable White Sox World Championship season.
What a waste.......2006-04-11
Besides the plentiful typos, including repeated paragraphs and the end of one chapter missing, this book is a complete waste of money and time. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who is about as die hard as they come about the White Sox. The book adds very little insight into anything going on behind the scenes throughout last season. I'm serious, there's no lockerroom stories that anyone who followed the team didn't know. There's little about the emotions of the players, almost a total lack of observations from individual players, and pretty much nothing that anyone with a Tribune subscription didn't already know. Anyone who watched the World Champions play regularly last seaons could have written this book and added more personal stories than were here. The White Sox deserve better than rewriting Tribune Ozzie columns from last year and turing the box scores into different chapters. The White Sox deserve far better than this. The only thing that keeps it from getting 0 stars is doing a nice job of keeping track of how many times Jay Mariotti did a bout face in his opinion of the team. Criminally overpriced and woefully lacking any original insight or stories. At over 20 dollars, I feel cheated. With all the characters on this team, a better book should have been written. I highly advise to pass on this without a second thought.

Customer Reviews:
Does the job of a phrasebook, but hardly ideal.......2006-01-04
Lonely Planet's BALTIC PHRASEBOOK covers the languages of the so-called Baltic republics, Estonian, Latvia, and Lithuanian.
In terms of phrases, all three chapters cover the same ground. General matters like asking directions and shopping are included, as are more specialised things like visiting the doctor. The menu decoders are very helpful. Oddly enough, when a phrase contains a different word-form depending on what gender is spoken of, the order is "feminine/masculine" instead of the "masculine/feminine" of most phrasebooks and dictionaries.
In their coverage of grammar, however, each chapter differs. That on Lithuanian includes a discussion of noun morphology, although it only shows four out of the language's seven cases. This may enable the traveller with some prior experience with inflected languages, such as Latin or Russian, to construct sentences not found in the book. However, the chapter on Latvian doesn't give any information like that.
The book contains some general tourist information and maps for the Baltic republics, which makes it larger than it might be and somewhat redundant, as many travellers will already have a specialized guidebook for the region.
This phrasebook may not be an essential purchase for someone spending only a few days in the region. Most young people in these three countries speak admirable English, and older shopkeepers can be addressed in Russian without problems (the guidebook line that shopkeepers here take offense at being addressed in Russian seems to be a myth).
Incredibly Helpful.......2004-04-04
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone spending more than a week in the Baltics! Last year, I spent a semester in Lithuania, and this book made the transition much easier! From going to the pharmacy to buy flu medication, to trying to find out where the outdoor market was, to telling a doctor that I had hurt my knee -- this book was constantly by my side and helped me be very independent while in a foriegn country. I was also able to learn a lot of phrases that I wouldn't have in my Lithuanian class. My only complaint is that sometimes the phonetic guide was a bit confusing, but this rarely interfered with my communication (if it does, you can just show the phrase to the person you are trying to speak with).
I love this little phrase book!.......2000-09-15
Actually, I love all "Lonely Planet" phasebooks and travel guides. You can't go wrong with them. These are the road warriors in our collection. They are worn, used and helpful! I want to own stock in Lonely Planet!
So you ask, "isn't there a later edition available?" Don't let that stop you. They are using a winning format and when it comes to speaking at least Lithuanian, little has changed (Lithuanian is a really, really, really old language!)
The book is concise and compact (3.5 x 5 x 1/2). It easily fits in any pocket. That is a major selling point. It is the perfect size to take along.
It has an abreviated pronunciation guide compared the single language versions and no dictionary. That comes form having to divide the space between three languages, so it can't go as in depth. Still, all the essentials are here. If you are planning a few days in each place, you'll be fine.
By the way, when you go to the Baltics, look for a copy of the "In Your Pocket Series" available at the airport or in the major hotels. It will be a great help to you. You can also find it online through a simple web search.
It made me curious.......2000-05-14
This book made me plan my 2-weeks summer-vacation in Estonia.

Excellent for people on a budget (like me !).......1998-07-20
Lonely planet has almost become the Bible for budget travellers. This book contiunes the trend - most people in the youth hostels I stayed at in Sacandinavia had a copy ! As ususal, the book provides good information on places to stay and eat as well as suggested sights. If anything, the book is a little light on detail in some areas. This is basically because it trys to cover such a large area. Therefore, travellers are advised to use this book as a guide only. It does not compensate for making your own enquies and going 'off the beaten track'. As usual, the book is well organised and reference making access to information quick and efficient. This is certainly thes best guide for Scandinavia I found and a must for independent travellers. Enjoy your trip ...

Customer Reviews:
If you're buying 1 Baltics travel book, don't buy this one.......2007-07-27
I generally love Lonely Planet books, so was a bit disappointed with this one. It's good as a quick reference guide, but nothing much more. It doesn't have very much background or history about some of the area's most important places. If you're going to buy only one book before traveling to the Baltics, choose the Rough Guide instead - we ended up using it almost exclusively towards then end of our trip. Also, the hotels/accommodations selection in this edition is very poor.
Excellence .......2007-03-10
The book I purchased was delivered to my house in great condition. It was if I had just bought the book at a book store.
First Time Traveler to Lithuania September 2005.......2005-09-26
I found the Lonely Planet Estonia Latvia & Lithuania book very helpful on my first trip to Lithuania. Six women traveling, we felt very safe, the maps were well written and made our daily planning easy. Time distances on the bus were accurate. Information on customs made us feel more at ease. We looked for relatives because my grandmother left Lithuania 100 years ago and found them. A bus trip to the city she was from, visiting the Tourist Information Center(as was listed in the book), an English speaking person in the office and we asked for a phone book which listed two phone numbers with my grandmother's last name. Wow, thank you Lonely Planet.
Useful, but needs some work.......2004-09-27
As usual, Lonely Planet guides give the most detailed information on the "nuts and bolts" of travel (bus and train instructions, locations and practicalities.) We found this particularly useful in a region where we did not share a common language with the people.
However, tourism to the Baltic region boomed in 2004 with these countries' entry into the EU, making the book's hotel listings completely inadequate. I don't fault the authors/editors for not anticipating the boom, but rather comment that, for example, with only 3000 hotel rooms in Vilnius a guidebook now needs to list a lot more hotles so visitors can hope to get one of those now-coveted rooms!
The other drawback of this book is common to most other Lonely Planet titles: the information on cities, buildings, monuments, etc., is very dry (lacks color) and is overly terse. For such information, I have come to enjoy Rough Guides which usually include enjoyable walking tours of the major tourist areas.
Comprehensive and Concise.......2004-05-04
The authors managed to stuff everything you need to know in a relatively small book. I have been in the Baltics three times and know Latvia quite well, but this book will enrich my next trip (the relatives and locals can only do so much).
I recommed it.

Customer Reviews:
Disgraceful garbage.......2001-10-25
Another bomb from Lonely Planet. Incoherent, often wrong and poorly written. It amazes me how this company's guide books have become the most popular amongst young travellers. This one covers the entire Scandinavian region - including the baltic republics and St. Petereburg. Like most of the regional LP books, this one doesn't follow a standardised format and provides the reader with reams of useless information. How anyone is supposed to plan a trip using this book is beyond me. Garbage.
plain and honest.......2001-03-30
This book is obviously aimed at the budget traveler, and does its job well enough, pointing out clean and cheap places to stay, eat, and get around. It doesn't have much to offer however to those travelers who'd like to sleep and dine a notch up. It gives adequate overviews of the cities, but I found the cultural particulars lacking. It seems to have a bias toward Disney style miniature villages etc., more than major museums. Or perhaps that's just Scandanavia; I haven't been there yet, am still in the process of planning a trip this summer.
When you don't have a lot of time you want to know the outstanding sights in museums you'll visit, since you won't be able to see everything. Like most travel guides, this one will work better if you also read its competition, such as Fodors, Michelin Green, Insight in planning your trip. LONELY PLANT however, by skipping those glitzy color photos that might lure you away from home in the first place, creates a light and compact package that's sufficient for the journey, as long as you've used other guides and resources for advance planning.
Very good, very comprehensive.......2001-01-07
Give credit to Lonely Planet for packing all of these areas together in one book. It would have been very easy to keep Iceland, Faroe Islands separate, the Baltic States separate, and a St. Petersburg city guide in a different book or just with Lonely Planet Russia.
Besides the fact that the area it covers is very comprehensive, here's why I like this book over others. Lonely Planet does a great job covering budget options for food, hostels/pensions/hotels, and activities. The city maps are extremely comprehensive. For example, there are exact points for each place to stay, place to eat, and other important landmarks (train station, post office, bus station, sights, etc.) in each city map. How easy is that! In addition, Lonely Planet is the best guide to cover how to get there, get around, and get away. I find that many guides only assume you are getting around by Eurail or bus. And unlike other guides that treat only the major cities and outlying areas (Frommers, for example), Lonely Planet is just as concerned with telling you where to find the smaller, less-crowded parts of Scandinavia and Baltic Europe (Norway's fjords, Iceland's hot springs, etc.) Without a doubt, get this book.
Easy and interesting Scandanavia.......2000-05-15
Lonely Planet Scandanavia made my recent journey up north easier. the book covers nearly every aspect necessary for travel. The additional information regarding history and culture gave me a rare insight into the cities i visited. The range of accomodations, however, is limited but sufficient.

Egg and Binky McNaughton have dark memories of Roger from grade school, when he picked on Egg. Could Roger have changed? Or will he be as merciless as ever?
Roger's long-time girlfriend, Cindy, is no gem either. She's manipulated her way into friendship with Anna Marie Arnold one so dangerously exclusive she doesn't want Anna Marie even talking to anyone else! Just what is Cindy up to?
Can Lexi Leighton and the gang put a stop to Cindy's and Roger's bullying ways before someone is seriously hurt?
Will the taunts torment Egg for the rest of his life?
