      Book Description

In the field of psychology, research areas often develop in relative isolation. Researchers in different areas are either not aware of, or seem to fail to see the relevance of findings from other areas even though it would seem that the findings are directly relevant to their own. One striking example of this is to be found in research that focuses on the effects of evaluation on performance.
This volume integrates thinking from five different research traditions - Achievement Goals, Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation, Goal Setting, Social Loafing, and Social Facilitation - through the unique format of a give-and-take conversation between leading academics from each.

2 out of 5 stars Caveat Tractor .......2004-08-26

I purchased this manual to get a layout of the undercarriage of a Toro lawn tractor so that I could correctly place the belt guides. Toro was included in the list of manufacturers covered. Although Toro indeed had a section devoted to it in the manual, the layout I was looking for was not included. In fact, no undercarriage diagrams were included. The Toro section basically covered the engine components and not the mower and drive belt components. The Toro section was also rather abbreviated, covering only a few pages. This also applied to many of the other manufacturers; some seemed to be addressed in good detail and some in scanty fashion with entire assemblies not covered at all. I also felt that the illustrations were crammed, inadequate and hard to distinguish. Clymer would have been better off doing detailed and complete sections of fewer items and publishing several volumes, rather than to publish a comprehensive and purportedly inclusive manual covering all makes. Alternatively, they could have excluded power train information and concentrated on providing thorough data on the mowing platforms.

Bottom Line: this is a poor excuse of a service manual.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping adventure story.......2004-02-07

I read this book several years ago from the library. I rarely buy a book but this one I have. Great adventure story about the challenges two young men face living in a cabin for a year in Manitoba. The description of the first six days trying to find the cabin after getting dropped off is a page turner.

Makes me wish I did something similar at that stage im my life as opposed to sitting at a cubicle. This books gives me the inspiration to maybe strike out and seek my own adventure someday.

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening experience for any Arctic traveler.......2003-11-22

The opening sequence of their expedition rivals that of any true life-and-death experience, including "Touching The Void." A must-read for any winter-camper who ventures off the beaten path more than a few days away from luxuries like mechanical heat from an automobile. This is one of the most profound stories of northern wilderness experience that I have ever read. Their story is similar to going to the moon on an Apollo mission, with no backup and no radio contact, and making it on their own. Truly the best story ever told of a modern Arctic expedition with a happy ending. This is a book that I read and immediately gave to a friend to read, and it has passed around to no less than 12 people as a "must read" already, and is still in motion.

4 out of 5 stars Simple, refreshing and sincere.......1999-01-15

Although I found the book simple and intellectually unchallenging, its sincerity, freshness and admiration for the wilderness and being a part of it were emotionally stirring. It reminded me of the importance of being able to step away from comitments to work, banks and acquaintances to experience something larger than all of us. We need this to remind us of the essence of being alive and human.

5 out of 5 stars A great personal adventure story. Wish I couldhave done it........1997-12-01

Most of us dream of adventures when we are young ... but the responsibilities of the world often derail them. David Scott's story is a tale of the dream of adventure fulfilled.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful exciting adventure........1997-10-12

I love outdoor adventure books and this book is a great one. This is a story of living and thriving in the Canadian wilderness. I was fascinated with the authors adventures of building a cabin, hunting moose, and exploring. If you like outdoor books I recommend this as a must read.

3 out of 5 stars Too much information.......2007-06-19

I love basketball! I played it and I've coached it. I chose this book to find out the story of a team and how it got its act together to be successful.

Well, I got that information, but it was mixed up with lots of other factoids that I really didn't care about. You were told about the town, the colleges, the weather, the families of the players, the kinds of summer jobs the players had, whether they were popular or not....the list goes on and on.

The writing was descriptive, but I feel like the author just got bogged down by too many details. This book wasn't what I hoped for.

4 out of 5 stars In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle.......2007-05-28

In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle is an extremely uplifting story that shows what young women can do when they put everything they have into it. I really enjoyed this book because it not only portrayed basketball scenes, but also the storys of all of the girls on the team. The down-to-earth stories of small town girls allowed me to realize that these were real girls who accomplished something that had eluded them for years. Although at times, the story seemed to not move along fast enough, for the most part it left me always wanting to read more. The ending of In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle left me utterly speechless with a huge smile on my face. The joy and triumph that the Amherst Lady Hurricanes felt literally jumped of the page and into my heart.

              3 out of 5 stars Wonderful - but ..........2004-09-13

I confess to being a fanatic about girls basketball. I've coached my daughters over a total of close to 9 years, and loved every minute of it. I also went to college in Amherst, as did my eldest daughter. She even knows one of the assistant coaches in the book.
I loved the book because of those interests, but I was a bit disappointed that it didn't provide more that would catch the interests of people who are not already passionate about it. I was hoping I would be able to recommend it to the middle school girls I coach to provide them some inspiration, but it didn't fit that bill. It is more of an almost superficial study of some very committed girls without giving any insights as to why they were so committed. Everybody knows that it takes commitment to win championships. Where does that come from?

I recommend the book to the parents of girls who are passionate about basketball. I recommend it to coaches of girls teams. And I recommend it to anyone with ties to the Amherst area. Beyond that, it's an ok read, and pretty short so it won't take a whole lot of time.

p.s. unlike another reviewer, I didn't find a feminist agenda coloring the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story, Beautifully Written.......2004-03-30

I have read dozens of books about sports, and this one ranks up there with the best. First of all, Madeleine Blais tells a great story, start to finish, of an exciting basketball season played by high school girls at the top of their game. But Ms. Blais makes the reader care deeply about these girls by bringing them to life as full human beings. The snapshots of their home lives, academic efforts, and personal relationships brings these girls alive. Finally, this is a thoughtful book that, without ever preaching, makes you realize that girls are naturally just as competitive and spirited as boys. Indeed, in these girls hope is a muscle. May they all live long, productive, and happy lives.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2004-01-17

I first read this book while I was still a member of a high school girls' basketball team. While my teams never reached nearly the pinnacle that the Amherst team did, I think that this book captures the dynamics and ongoing relationships in sports, especially on a girls' team. Each character comes vividly to life after reading it just once, and after a few times, they seem like good friends. This book is a must for anyone who plays sports, watches sports, or is a sports parent.

                          Book Description

Sixteen-year-old Susan Bennett, boarding school reject, shaves her head and returns home to her parents' mansion...the war-zone. It's the scene of so many battles, watched over by her bloated older brother, Neat. He hasn't spoken in eight years, he's a medical oddity, and the subject of his father's internationally award-winning book, 'The Silent Boy'. Situation 'normal', right? Wrong! Susan and Neat meet Todd, whose street theatre troupe seems to have a strange impact on Neat. Sweet-eyed, sharp-tongued Susan is in for a surprise. Neat is talking! And he wants to save the world!

1 out of 5 stars Fat Boy Bores World.......2005-07-30

I noticed this book because it has a quirky title. "Fat Boy Saves World," what can that be? So I gave it a try. But it's poorly written, completely unengaging, and not memorable at all. I think you can judge a good book by whether or not you want to read it again once you're finished, but this is one novel whose pages will remain closed for me.

                          5 out of 5 stars Refrshingly Fantastic.......2004-06-29

To put a label on this book seems a crime, but I will try anyways. It reminded me of "Catcher in the Rye" as seen through the eyes of Tim Burton.
It started out as being a very odd title, that turned into an even odder story. The charicters were very well developed, and the author expressed his views on life and the world without coming off as preaching.
The really puzziling thing about "Fat Boy Saves World," is that I stole it from my library's teen section, and not the general fiction shelves. Trust me there is a lot more to get out of this book than most other teen novels. I would suggest it for any age.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and interesting.......2003-01-10

Susan Bennett has been sent home from boarding school in disgrace after going one step too far and shaving her head. At home she is left to care for her older brother who the rest of her family calls Brian, but to Susan he will always be Neat. The rest of the knows Neat as the Silent Boy, so it is a huge surprise when he speaks for the first time in years. That single moment takes Susan, Neat, and their new friend Todd on a fast-paced adventure that no one seems to be able to control. An unforgettable novel.

I describe this novel as unforgettable because even though the writing isn't the best I have ever read, the characters and the way they interact makes it a very interesting read. The bizarre thing is I didn't like this novel that much when I started it, but I couldn't put it down, and the character of Neat refused to go away. While I wouldn't recommend this book to everyone, if you like something a little different, a book that is unique and creates its own identity - then this is the book for you. There are parts of this book that make you sit up and take notice, and there are parts of the novel when you just sit back and wonder at this boy who has become this icon for the world - and the sister who is so angry at her parents.

If you have read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, or most of the Chris Crutcher books - then you should enjoy this book too.

                          3 out of 5 stars hmmm...........2002-01-26

Well, this book wasn't BAD, per se...

But it really wasn't that good either. Not badly written, badly plotted or badly imagined. But, not good either. A little bit cool, but a little bit boring. Almost exciting, sometimes.

                          A mediocre read.

3 out of 5 stars This Book was different.......2001-10-17

The reason I bought this book was because it was different. It was sorta confusing in the beginning and everything, but then I got used to it. I enjoyed the middle but toward the end I got knida bored. The way Ian Bone writes is good, and the characters are really funny in this book. I would recommened this book to someone who wants to read something much different.
