                  Book Description

Here's how to see the world from your boat. More and more people are taking off on their cruising boats for a few months or even a year. After they've tasted the cruising life, prepared and equipped their boats, and developed some experience, many cruisers begin to dream of voyaging farther--maybe even an around-the-world voyage.

The Voyager's Handbook offers specific information for cruisers considering such a vast undertaking. An experienced circumnavigator, author Beth Leonard shows cruisers how to prepare their boat and themselves. She offers complete, up-to-date information on the latest gear and techniques and detaile, hard-earned advice from dozens of experienced sailors, about boats, crew, and costs as well as crucial but easily overlooked aspects of long-distance passagemaking such as health, safety, weather, provisions, fresh water, and foreign port protocol.

With a balanced, down-to-earth approach, The Voyager's Handbook tells it like it is, for any cruiser considering that voyage of a lifetime.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book FIRST! Best ocean voyaging preparation manual.......2007-10-01

To sufficiently prepare for, what we plan will be at least five years of ocean voyaging, we have purchased and read more than 20 books, in addition to subscribing to Seven Seas Crusing Association and reading greater than fifty online articles, user forums, blogs and websites. The Voyager's Handbook, is by far, the single best resource for preparing to sell out and sail off. The book is extremely well organized and conveniently offers topic specific browsing or cover-to-cover reading. We each read the book, with great appreciation, the first week it arrived. My husband and I have raced sailboats and cruised both sail and power boats for over twenty-five years. We have cruised and raced offshore. We have owned thirty boats. I mention this only to demonstrate that we are experienced boaters. We were thrilled at the quality and scope of this publication. We were seeking a comprehensive checklist/action plan and gained much more. We would have saved countless hours and over $500 if we would have found this book first. Neither of us know the author or anyone financially benefiting from the sale of this publication. We took the time to write only to help others prepare more efficiently, as we have benefited from the comments of both readers'and professional reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent if planning to refit a boat for offshore.......2007-03-17

Terrific book which finally made it clear to me why I had been ground into the dust refitting an older boat; namely, the enormous number of jobs and the huge amount of labour required to refit a 20 year old boat, even if in moderately good condition.

Table 4-5, page 117, lists desired upgrades for three styles of offshore voyagers - simplicity, moderation and highlife. Their costs and labour are shown in detail in Chapter 10, Putting it All Together From Refit Plan to Balanced Boat, pages 248-266.

There is also a real world FOUR YEAR refit example and information on what was left off going from Leonard's Silk to Hawk.

This is NOT in the first edition, which for me makes the second edition the only choice.

This book is as necessary as Hal Roth's How to Sail Around the World and Nigel Calder's Mechanical and Electrical Manual and Cruising Handbook

2 out of 5 stars I liked the first edition better.......2007-02-08

Some things are best left as they were. The first edition was simple to read, and did not seem to be trying to be the most complete guide to cruising ever written. Unfortunately I loaned my copy to a friend and it never came back so I ordered a new copy and got this one. I think the author has tried to write about too many subjects and include too many different ideas- it comes off like a compendium of conflicting ideas. Also this book more than the previous edition shows the author has a pretty big budget. Not the best guide for those of us with more limited funds.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource & very readable.......2007-01-10

This is the book we have been looking for! Very easy to read, but has lots of very useful information for anyone wanting to go offshore sailing. Gets you organizing your thought processes and keeps you focused. Good sense of humor and very descriptive - feel like you are right there with them in the discussions. Recommend to anyone thinking about offshore but also read her other book as well!!

                  5 out of 5 stars WHAT A MASTERPIECE!!!!! .......2006-12-06

First of all, I am not a child of 13, this was the only space I could find to write this review. As a matter of fact, I am a grandmother and I have recently return from a two year, double handed, Atlantic circle. I have sailed all my life.

Beth Leonard has produced the most valuable book I have ever seen for cruisers of any level. I wish I could give it to everyone I've met along my voyages. I can't think of anyone who would not benefit. Certainly not a frilly coffee table item, instead, something of real value. An encyclopedia of research and a dedicated documentation of pratical information.

This book is excellent. The skills are great if you are teaching social studies and other curricula that involves reading. It teaches students how to break the information down and deal with the information out of a book that is above a student's reading level.

3 out of 5 stars Nice read, could use more concrete lessons.......2007-01-04

As an English teacher, this was a useful read. The chapters were short, and there were nice teaching suggestions at the end of the chapters. However, I would have liked to have seen more concrete lesson plans and blackline masters. I had to read this book for a class, but I will definitely hang on to it as an instructional resource.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, so I have to buy it..........2006-05-02

I'm currently facing the end of my first year teaching, and I'm already looking forward to the new beginnings of next year. As a "newbie", I picked this book up from my school's professional library and fell in love with its conversational writing style and practical ideas. Frustrated by the fact that I can't write in the school's copy, I'm now buying my own. You should too.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for new teachers!.......2006-04-17

This is a very great, practical, realistic book. It is a very easy read, and is only 120 pages total. If you already know alot about reading comprehension, it is nothing earth-shattering, and you may only pick up a few things from it. But, if you are a relatively new teacher, this book could help you significantly. Tovani's writing is very simple, easy to follow, and straightforward, and you can tell she is still a classroom teacher and not some out-of-touch researcher, since all her tips are very practical. Even if you already know alot about comprehension, this book will probably give you a few new things to think about, and it can easily be read in one weekend. It will not be a waste of your money!!

5 out of 5 stars Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? Content Comprehension, Grades 6-12.......2006-02-21

This book is short and to the point but filled with valuable information for teachers who want to strengthen reading comprehension in their classrooms. I highly recommend this book as a starter text for both teachers who are motivated to learn more about content area reading and those who may be hesitant. It's a great title for a collegial study group.

My 10 yo son really enjoyed this book, going through the history, enjoying hearing about the unusual situations, challenging the 10 best home runs and disparaging the fact that so many of the listed ones were hit by stinkin' Yankees. It's the sort of book that he picks up on a regular basis and just browses though several times.

                    Book Description

No single act in sports has had as great an impact on our culture, our language, and our imagination as the home run. So how come weve had to wait so long for the definitive biography?! Dingers! tells the history of the round-tripper, from Babe Ruth to the chasing and breaking of the Babes records to todays pumped-up tater totals. Its narrative will trace the relationship among home runs, players, and fans, showing how going yard has grown in importance to the point where jacking the ball over the wall often overshadows the actual results of games. Easy to read for history, browse for nuggets, or use for reference, Dingers! appeals to casual fans and seamheads alike. Think of it as your one-stop guide to going downtown.

Dingers is obviously a book about the home run and its effect on baseball. Keating traces the history of home runs in baseball, from the "Dead ball" era of baseball's early years through the "Hyper Inflation" era of the late 90s, and to the current era which seems to indicate a "coming back to earth" (no pun intended) phase for home run hitting. Along the way, the book has all kinds of interesting facts and figures about home runs, everything from most HR's by position, the oldest player to hit a homerun (Julio Franco, are you listening?), most career grand slams, most HR's by a teenager (Ed Kranepool, where are you now?), and so on.

There's also lots of sidebars about famous (and no so famous) HR hitters, famous games involving HR's (and no, most did not happen at Coors Field!). The history Keating writes about here does not make any conclusions and is clearly not meant as a serious study on the topic, but more of a fun and quick look at the phenomena of home runs and how much the fans enjoy them. "Chicks dig the long ball," that 1999 TV commercial stated but I think it's safe to say guys like them too.

Watching the flight of a home run ball as it leaves a park is always great fun, and so is this book.

This is a fun read--written for everyone who loves the game of baseball, and especially those who feel a thrill when they hear that "pock" sound when a slugger connects on the sweet spot of his bat, and the ball soars into the sky and the crowd roars. Here are lots of fun facts connected with round trippers--probably all the record combinations you've ever thought of (HRs and stolen bases), and many you haven't (HRs and low batting averages). I've followed the game all my life, and I learned a lot. Keating covers the history of the game, going decade by decade, showing who hit how many. Along the way, he spotlights certain sluggers. With some of the text, Keating is the writer, in other places, he is the editor. But the overall impression is a seamless storytelling. One thing I was reminded of while reading this book: baseball is a good way to teach children math. Many a boy has learned a love of statistics while looking up his favorite player's numbers. This is a good book to read while watching Bonds chase the Babe and good ol' Henry Aaron.

                    Book Description

Jack Walker is most content outdoors, especially not far from the lush green fields of Seals Stadium and Fenway Park or his neighbors' perfectly manicured lawns. He finally gets his dream job, mowing the Molders' lawn, not long after a heart attack felled Mr. Molder in his living room. But the job ends abruptly when Jack learns that a fellow left-handed pitcher, a veteran major leaguer, had mowed off one of his toes. Jack's own baseball career ends unceremoniously. "Great job, Lefty," says his coach, after Jack's first outing of the season, which happens to be his team's final game. "I'll use you a lot more next season." Says Jack: "I'm a senior, Coach." "Well, you certainly pitched like one today." And then there were horses, schools and girls, including one whose father prowls around like a bear.

Jack Walker is a kid with a healthy wariness about most things. Blessed with unusual powers of observation, Walker proceeds cautiously, and sometimes clumsily, through childhood, worrying about what might happen next. Often, his fears are justfied. As a kid, he's sent to a hell hole of a summer camp. As a teen, he's violated by a quick-draw enema artist of a school nurse. Jack survives it all, and comes through his often hilarious adventures a little wiser, and less innocent. It all makes for a wonderful read, a coming-of-age tale that unfolds as naturally and unhurriedly as a Saturday afternoon baseball game. Heller, a copy editor at the Washington Post, writes with the sensibility of a novelist and the precision of a veteran journalist. He has a gift for dead-on descriptions and small insights that evoke memories of what growing up was really like.

                            Description:
We investigate empirically how industrialized countries and US states share consumption risk at horizons between 1 and 30 years. US federal states share about 50% of their permanent idiosyncratic risk through cross-state capital income flows. While insurance against transitory fluctuations in output is virtually complete, OECD countries do not share any of their permanent idiosyncratic risk. Our results suggest that purely transaction cost based theories cannot explain the home bias, since the potential welfare gains from insurance against permanent shocks would by far outweigh that of insuring against transitory variation. We conclude that permanent and transitory shocks constitute two qualitatively different kinds of risk and that various forms of endogenous market incompleteness may render permanent shocks a lot harder to insure, in particular at the international level.
