Book Description
This is one of the first four in a new series of fabulously illustrated natural history travel guides, intended for the general reader with an interest in natural history, and for the growing numbers of 'ecotourists' who want to know where to see wildlife in the countries they visit. The books are designed to complement each other and to build into a nature library, together giving an introduction to the natural history of Europe. Britain's compact scale belies the diversity of its landscapes - from sea-cliffs and rocky offshore islands, to the massifs of the Scottish Highlands, the low fenland of East Anglia, and the gentle wooded coombes of the south-west. This fabulously illustrated new travel guide describes hundreds of places where these landscapes and their inhabitants can be seen at their best, all in easy reach of the discerning traveller. Essentially practical, the book first introduces the ecology, geology, and wildlife of Britain, then goes on to describe where to see its natural history at its best. There are descriptions of a selection of some 200 sites to visit, each carefully chosen to show a range of habitats and fascinating wildlife. The entries are the personal choice of the authors and are based on intensive travel and research in the region. Described sites range in size from a few to thousands of hectares, be they National Parks, nature reserves, or simply common land, but all are open to the public and accessible to the ordinary visitor. Four colour throughout, this book has stunning landscape photographs, line drawings and photographs of individual animals of plants and animals, colour region and site maps, and a splendid composite painting encapsulating typical habitats and their inhabitants.
Book Description
The classic guide to catamarans, updated to bring readers the latest for everyman's sailboat. Fast, inexpensive, versatile, and exciting, catamarans are one of America's most popular pleasure crafts. Here is a complete course in catamaran sailing for the beginner and the semi-experienced sailor who wants to become more skilled in the arts of tuning, handling, and racing cats. Included are sections on buying a cat, learning the basics, heavy weather sailing, racing tactics, surfing, and more. Includes a new chapter on how to use high-performance sails.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and deep... could use better pictures and minor updates.......2007-08-06
I'm a relatively inexperienced sailer and just getting into catamarans, and have read several other sailing books (and many web sites) but still learned a ton from this one. This one really does focus in closely on things that are unique to cats rather than monohulls. Berman covers almost all the questions I had, and then some, and with clear, concise language and occasional very detailed lists of stuff you need or steps to take, which were extremely helpful. Minor complaints: 1) the pictures are low quality and often shot from too far a distance or in lighting (or print quality?) that makes it tough to see what you care most about or what the caption is talking about; 2) Last revision was 1999 so it doesn't say much about what's different about the newer Hobie rotomolded hull boats I'm looking at (Getaway and Wave), or some of the more modern accessories I see in sailing catalogs. But overall, unless you're a veteran cat sailer, I'd bet you could benefit from many things in here... and if somewhat new to it, this is absolutely a great resource.
Catamaran sailing 1 required reading.......2007-01-11
For anyone interested in catamaran sailing specifically - this is a comprehensive overview from purchasing decision factors to advanced racing techniques, and everything in between. The information is provided in an extremely user friendly format - the book is a joy to read - highly recommended for those considering starting cat sailing, just beginning cat sailing , or ready to race catamarans.
Great Beginner Book, that's it.......2006-06-17
If you are considering buying a cat or have never sailed, this is a fine book. Info on standing up the mast putting the sails on, etc. If you know anything about sailing (can leave a spot and hit land somewhere else), this isn't the book for you. Tons of generic information on buying a boat, sailing and turning a boat. Hardly any specifics on any boat. I was very dissappointed. I was expecting a little bit on batten tension, rig tension, etc. Book briefly covers mast rake, shifting gears, and other itermediate set up techniques, but does not give much specific information on "if you do this, this will happen"
Catamaran Sailing: From Start to Finish.......2005-08-03
This book is aimed at a novice sailor, covering all the basics about sailing, such as various points of sail and tacking and gybing. I did find information that I wanted in 2 chapters about sailing cats off the beach and surfing cats. So if you are a novice, a very good book, if you are experience, seek other sources.
It's all here!.......2004-07-24
This is the best complete book on catamarans I've found yet. Great illustrations and all sorts of practical information on everything including all the basics. A truly great reference book! Good effort! 5 stars plus....
Book Description
ox-y-mor-on-i-ca (OK-se-mor-ON-uh-ca) noun, plural: Any variety of tantalizing, self-contradictory statements or observations that on the surface appear false or illogical, but at a deeper level are true, often profoundly true. See also oxymoron, paradox.
examples:
"Melancholy is the pleasure of being sad."
Victor Hugo
"To lead the people, walk behind them."
Lao-tzu
"You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap."
Dolly Parton
You won't find the word "oxymoronica" in any dictionary (at least not yet) because Dr. Mardy Grothe introduces it to readers in this delightful collection of 1,400 of the most provocative quotations of all time. From ancient thinkers like Confucius, Aristotle, and Saint Augustine to great writers like Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and G. B. Shaw to modern social observers like Woody Allen and Lily Tomlin, Oxymoronica celebrates the power and beauty of paradoxical thinking. All areas of human activity are explored, including love, sex and romance, politics, the arts, the literary life, and, of course, marriage and family life. The wise and witty observations in this book are as highly entertaining as they are intellectually nourishing and are sure to grab the attention of language lovers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully enlightening.......2007-07-16
The quotes in this pithy little book are full of wit and wisdom. I have shared many of them with friends and family. It will be worthwhile reading for anyone who cares about words, history and real "rubber-meets-the-road" intelligence.
Conversation Starter.......2006-12-21
My mother bought this for me for Christmas one year...she calls me her little oxymoron. She just means that I love witty uses of language...and this book was perfect for me, because it's full of just that! It's split into 14 different chapters, each one showcasing a different type of oxymoron. This was very helpful, because it's easy to flip to whichever section you're in the mood for. This is a great book to set on your coffee table, because it will be a conversations starter at any gathering.
I love how there were oxymorons that make me giggle:
"Be spontaneous." (think about that one!!)
And ones that were just true and thoughtful:
"To lead the people, walk behind them." - Lao-tzu
A great gift for anyone who enjoys the fun of playing with the English language.
I doubt whether there can be a better concise collection of HQ oxymorons.......2006-08-09
I didnt expect that this handy little green book could contain so many oxymorons in 14 chapters (13 categories). Definitely a very useful and affordable tool in anyone's bookshelf for reference whenever necessary. Highly recommended!

A Tool For Wordsmiths: Mini-Review of "Oxymoronica" by Dr. Mardy Grothe.......2006-05-31
I have always found words to be marvelous tools, weapons or playthings - depending on who is wielding them and in what tone of voice. I marvelous at those who have the talent to express time-tested ideas in new and entertaining ways. So, I was delighted to find this little gem, written by Dr. Mardy Grothe: Oxymoronica - Paradoxical Wit and Wisdom from History's Greatest Wordsmiths." This HarperCollins book will be added to my bookshelf of hand reference works.
According to Dr. Grothe's own definition, "oxymoronica" are: "Any variety of tantalizing, self-contradictory statements or observations that on the surface appear false or illogical, but at a deeper level are true, often profoundly true."
The author has been collecting memorable quotations for many years, and out of the tens of thousands in his collection, he chose two hundred pages worth that best represent the art of verbal paradox.
I could share quotations from every page that are worth passing on, but to keep this mini-review from become too "maxi," I will share only a few quotations culled from my favorite authors.
From Dickens - the immortal opening passage to A Tale of Two Cities:
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,
It was the epoch of believe, it was the epoch of incredulity,
It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,
It was the spring of hope, it was the spring of despair,
We had everything before us, we had nothing before us,
We were all going direct to Heaven,
We were all going direct the other way."
(Page 197)
From Dickens Bleak House:
"He is an honorable, obstinate, truthful, high-spirited, intensely prejudiced, perfectly reasonable man."
(Page 205)
From Dostoyevsky's Notes from the Underground:
"In despair there are the most intense enjoyments, especially when one is very acutely conscious of the hopelessness of one's position."
"Man is sometimes extraordinarily, passionately, in love with suffering."
(Page 200)
From Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye:
"As in the case of many misanthropes, his disdain for people led him into a profession designed to serve them."
(Page 201)
From Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard:
"When a lot of remedies are suggested for a disease, that means it can't be cured."
(Page 204)
Joseph Heller, in Catch-22, is a veritable fount of oxymoronic wit and wisdom:
"Even amongst men lacking all distinction he inevitably stood out as a man lacking more distinction than all the rest, and people who met him where always impressed by how unimpressive he was."
"The Texan turned out to be good-natured, generous and likeable. In three days, no one could stand him."
Heller - in Something Happened:
"When I grow up I want to be a little boy."
(Page 207)
From Aldous Huxley in Point Counter Point:
"Several excuses are always less convincing than one."
(Page 208)
Washington Irving in Bracebridge Hall:
"Whenever a man's friends begin to compliment him about looking young, he may be sure that they think he is growing old."
(Page 208)
Edgar Allan Poe in The Purloined Letter:
"The best place to hide anything is in plain view."
(Page 211)
George Bernard Shaw in Man and Superman:
"The most unbearable pain is produced by prolonging the keenest pleasure."
Another Shavian gem, from Heartbreak House:
"The surest way to ruin a man who doesn't know how to handle money is to give him some."
(Page 212)
Finally, Alexander Solzhenitsyn in The First Circle:
"You only have power over people as long as you don't take everything away form them. But when you've robbed a man of everything he's no longer in your power - he's free again."
(Page 212)
This is a book you can read in one sitting, and then will return to again and again for inspiration and delight.
In keeping with the spirit of the book, let me conclude: "This little volume is a quick snack that will feed you for a lifetime!"
Enjoy!

A little more literature.......2006-03-14
This book has a more unique viewpoint than most others of its type, which makes it a bit more interesting. It takes more thought to analyze the entries, so that it serves as a "wake up" medium for emphasis when it accompanies other thoughts that one wants to express.
Book Description

On his journey, he meets other rain forest animals, not all of them friendly! Alas, the new tree he chooses is already home to another chameleon. She dons her aggressive coloring until she's sure that the visitor is friend, not foe. Then they welcome each other with brilliant, happy colors.Incredible photographs and simple text perfect for young children is rounded out with informative backmatter on one of the planet's most captivating creatures.
Customer Reviews:
Cama cama cama, cama chameleon.......2005-12-02
The concept of photography as an art is finally coming into its own. Once reluctant art centers are placing their Edward Westons alongside their Claude Monets. As recently as 2004 the very first Caldecott Honor was given to a picture book that contained photography in some way (it was "Knuffle Bunny" by Mo Willems). And Joy Cowley has singlehandedly reinvented the notion of the photographic picture book. Having begun this process with "Red-Eyed Tree Frog" (a title that National Geographic Press must feel they should've gotten first dibs on), Cowley has once again paired with photographer extraordinaire Nic Bishop with the multi-colored and magnificent, "Chameleon, Chameleon". Until these last two books, the notion of a fictional photographic tale has never been properly realized ("Stranger In the Woods" by Carl R. Sams does NOT count). Now all that has changed and Cowley & Bishop can be commended for formenting an entirely new genre in the picture book oeuvre. No small task.
Open the book and marvel at the first double-page image. A chameleon grasps a tiny branch, its eyes completely closed in slumber. The skin of the critter is aquamarine, cobalt blue, orange, sea green, yellow, and an array of other shades. When the chameleon wakes up it goes on a hunt for food. We watch its perfect little feet grasp thin tree branches. The reptile confronts a harmless gecko, a tiny chameleon, a frog, a different gecko, and a dangerous scorpion. At last the chameleon locates a caterpillar in a tree and ZAP! Its tongue shoots out and pulls the tasty morsel into its mouth. A female chameleon threatens the gecko with angry colors. It, in turn, calms her with bright colors and she turns an albino-like white to welcome him. "Two chameleon friends... have happy colors".
Prior to reading this book, if you had stopped me on the street and shouted the word, "CHAMELEON" into my ear, my first thought (aside from wondering, "Why is this person yelling reptilian names into my ear?") would have been of a green creature that is able to change its skin color. It was to my delight that I discovered, all thanks to this book, that chameleons sport beautiful mottled skins of every conceivable color when they are relaxed or happy. The book is eager to show other creatures that camouflage themselves to fit their environments. Sharp eyed young 'uns should check out the picture of the gecko as a twig and the other gecko as a leaf. In the back of the book, a factual "Did You Know?" section gives more details about chameleons and their defining characteristics. A further section labeled, "How the Photographs Were Taken" explains the process the photographer had to go through to get these riveting shots. There is a brief mention that because putting two animals together is "unpredictable", the pictures that had more than one reptile or insect in the shot have been "stitched" together, presumably with the help of Photoshop. This is a near seamless process in all but one picture. In the picture of the chameleon passing a tiny frog, the frog has that sharp-edged quality found in poorly merged Photoshop images. It seems to float on its leaf, rather than grasp it. Gravity does not seem to affect this frog. I do wish that Bishop could have improved on this photo before sending it off to the publisher. Ah well.
By and large, "Chameleon, Chameleon" fills the ever widening need young children have for non-fiction titles that speak on their level. Cowley doesn't suddenly burst into a paragraph long explanation of the feeding habits of chameleons. She is perfectly aware that her audience is small, likes bright colors, cool animals, and the proper use of words like ZAP! For those parents eager to get their kids hooked on science early, "Chameleon, Chameleon" is a worthy successor to the equally lovely and lively, "Red-Eyed Tree Frog". I sure many readers can hardly wait to see what Cowley and Bishop come up with next. I vote for toucans.
full of info.......2005-07-27
If you have ever wanted to learn more about chameleons this is the book for you. It features several chameleons and follows then through out their day. We see their homes, we find out how they catch their prey and how they eat it. We also we how they react to one another. The authors note in the back of the book gives lots of factual information on chameleons.
This truly delightful book gives a surprising amount of information. It would appeal to any age level, though its simple text is designed for a younger audience.
Yes The full color photos of the chameleon are great!
A Terrific Book for The Rain Forest and Earth Day!.......2005-04-25
Joy Cowley dreams up another simple fun book with pictures of great detail. It reminds what I have been missing, not looking at photographs of chameleons rather than drawings. The photos are spectacular!

A very entertaining and colorful story........2003-05-07
My 6 year old son was captivated by this story of a shy chameleon named Smedley. The story goes that Smedley is so shy he just blends into every background. He isn't noticed in school, doesn't participate much because he is so shy. That is until the new girl shows up. Sally Skinky who is the opposite of Smedley immediately takes to him and helps him to realize his potential for standing out. She works with him and talks to him which builds his confidence. He becomes so confident that he enters himself in an art show. All the other kids have a picture to show but Smedley uses himself, changing into many different patterns and colors. He wins the art show and now has confidence in himself. He learns that being different is not such a bad thing after all. Very colorful and adorable. If you have a shy child this shows them that they don't need to blend in, that being a little different has its own rewards.
