These are the proceedings of a 1999 meeting at Heriot Watt University, focussing on the cambium. In the nature of things this is a somewhat heterogeneous gathering of papers on contemporary cutting edge research. As indicated by the price it is meant for institutional libraries only.

In the past ten years, the interest in the functional and structural aspects of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates has increased enormously. Great insights have been made into the mode of action of glycans in cells, tissues, organs and organisms. As more and more information becomes known implicating carbohydrates in biological function, increasing pressure is placed on all aspects of biophysical methods to adapt and advance in order to provide structural insight into the biology of carbohydrates and conjugated glycans. Many existing tools that have served admirably to probe structure-function relationships in proteins are difficult or impossible to apply to complex glycans and glycoproteins. Established structural methods, such as X-ray diffraction or NMR spectroscopy also face enormous challenges when applied to the study of biologically relevant glycans in glycoproteins. Because of the challenges and limitations of traditional experimental methods, computational techniques can contribute unique insight into the relationship between oligosaccharide structure and biological function. Perhaps in no other field can biomolecular calculations make as major a contribution; whether they serve to provide models to assist in the interpretation of otherwise insufficient experimental data, or to provide a priory models for the structure of oligosaccharides, or insight into the mechanisms of carbohydrate recognition. From the application of quantum mechanics in the study of carbohydrate-processing enzymes, to the classical dynamics simulation of oligosaccharides and their protein complexes, the range of systems being examined theoretically is rapidly expanding. Given the structural diversity and flexibility of carbohydrates, it is not surprising that both experimental and theoretical methods face many unique challenges. Contained within this text are examples of the latest NMR and computational methods applied to oligosaccharides and their complexes with proteins.

Good stuff to know.......2007-10-08

This is not a book that will teach you how to use a sextant. What it will do is give you an appreciation for the evolution of the instrument and its care and feeding. And you should definitely read it if you're planning to go shopping for a sextant to complement your GPS.

How to read signts--Nowhere in the handbook.......2007-09-05

The most important use of a handbook is to tell you how to read sights taken by the sextant. That, you cannot find here; thus the 1 star.

To be fair, there are 2 attempts at this, but by way of captions to figures or drawings. The first is Fig. 2-3 at page 41. The supposed reading is 29* 42'.5. The 29* is easily shown by the arrow pointed to the scales in the arc; and so is the 42" indicated in the micrometer drum. But how can you tell .5 minutes from the vernier?

The second is Fig. 7-4 at page 129 that demonstrates index error corrections for "on the arc" and "off the arc" index errors. Again, the "minutes" portion of the readings are easy, but that for fraction of "minutes" is pure guess work.

The handbook should have devoted an entire section to correct reading of the sextant.

The Sextant Handbook, by Bruce Bauer.......2007-02-20

Bauer -- no, not Jack Bauer, and Bruce isn't his brother -- is an ex-Navy man and often it comes through his writing, which sets the books mood and tone. If you've battled with self-learning celestial navigation (as I am) you'll appreciate the beginnings of the book, and it IS more readable and understandable than much of what I've been through before. The second edition is dated 1992; the pricing he gets into on used sextants is worthless; his seemingly complete disdain for plastic sextants (I have a Davis Mk. 25) is pretty clear as well. Nonetheless, this is pretty clearly written, and in many cases explained theory/math that I was unable to grasp in other instructional books. I've still yet to make a correct sight, but I'm getting closer all the time!

sextant repair and use.......2001-07-11

This book is a necisity for anyone that wants to sail beyond the coast. It has excelent advice on the use adjustment and purchasing of your primary navagational aid. Yes I know you have a gps (genuine piece of ) you must be able to find your way without it.

A book for the sextant lover.......2001-05-16

Sextants are bautiful instruments that let us determine our position by observing stars and planets. They are very precise optical instruments, and today, the least expensive new metal sextant costing around $... Such a precious and expensive instrument needs to be cared for properly.

This book contains very helpful information on how to adjust (or how not to adjust, to avoid damage) your sextant to ensure accurate sightings. The book also covers what can be done to continue to use a sextant after damage, including what repairs can be done by its user. It covers the use and storage of the sextant at sea, gives good tips on how to get good sights and times, and describes a number of sextant types, apparels, and accessories, along with their pros and cons. It also contains interesting information about the history of celestial navigation. I bought my sextant new, but there is a really good section on buying a used sextant. Cmd. Bauer also gives numerous contact information for sextant manufacturers, importers, and retailers, though I haven't checked if they are still up to date. At the very least they will be a good guide for the prospective buyer of a new or used sextant.

The pricing information on the book is outdated, and so are some of the things that are described, like Davis' prism to ensure verticality of the sextant, which is not manufactured or distributed anymore. But it is really well written, full of good information, and a very nice companion to your sextant, or a good guide before you buy one, used or new. Obviously, Cmd. Bauer knows what he writes about, and how to present his knowledge in a compelling manner.

In this book we have two main characters with total different attitudes, thoughts, actions, and many more. This book focuses on one person named Jake who has a big problem. Jake here has a problem that no one ever knew. Lainy, a fourteen year old girl that lives on a farm that Jake and his dad lives on is now a victim of Jake's. Lainy finds herself in a decision only she can make nobody else can. When Lainy finds out about Jake she's running for her life, but finds out that she can't run because she cares about Jake. Putting herself in danger, Lainy is getting more and more threats sexual and physical, she finds it deep in her heart to stick up for herself against Jake to do something about it.
My likes and dislikes about this book are that this book is very interesting, There is action all the time. It's never boring. When you stop on a page, you always are thinking about what's going to happen next with Jake and Lainy are going to do next. I really don't have any dislikes about this book but one thing is that it makes you think that this same thing in this book happens everyday in the world. Me, it makes me mad because people need to stick up for themselves no matter what. If you are a person who gets made fun of, stick up for yourself o something about it.
I would really recommend this book to someone who loves mystery and conflict. There is defiantly a lot of mystery between Jake and Lainy. I hope for all people who read this, go to the library and check this book out. I guarantee you that you will love it.

Mystery and Romace with a twist.......2005-09-28

i just couldn't put it down!.......2005-03-30

i started this book at 5 in the afternoon and literally could not put it down untill i finished it. it is amazing.the plot was full, the characters rich and not only could both males and females relate to lainey's character but we also got to see who jake was without having to follow him around like most characters in a book. i also liked the way that lainey kept refering back to the irreparably damaged statment made by the councelor about jake. it really brought the theme of the book out in full detail.

Great, but little confusing.......2004-10-30

This book is about a boy that is normal but yet not. He has parents and he has friends. He is normal for the most part, but at times he will go psycho and be very mean. His parents are scared at times because of the way he acts. How it ends is up to you to read this book.
Things I like about this book are that it doesn't use words that you have to grab a dictionary and look it up. This book does have a lot of action in it. It doesn't get confusing often, but will every once and a while.
Things I didn't like were the lack of details used in this book. The book needed more conversation and it would be much more interesting. When it gets confusing it gets really confusing.
