Book Description
In the ten years since the publication of Modern Soil Microbiology, the study of soil microbiology has significantly changed, both in the understanding of the diversity and function of soil microbial communities and in research methods. Ideal for students in a variety of disciplines, this second edition provides a cutting-edge examination of a fascinating discipline that encompasses ecology, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology, and makes use of biochemical and biophysical approaches. The chapters cover topics ranging from the fundamental to the applied, and describe the use of advanced methods that have provided a great thrust to the discipline of soil microbiology. Using the latest molecular analyses, they integrate principles of soil microbiology with novel insights into the physiology of soil microorganisms. The authors discuss the soil and rhizosphere as habitats for microorganisms, then go on to describe the different microbial groups, their adaptive responses, and their respective processes in interactive and functional terms. The book highlights a range of applied aspects of soil microbiology, including the nature of disease-suppressive soils, the use of biological control agents, biopesticides and bioremediation agents, and the need for correct statistics and experimentation in the analyses of the data obtained from soil systems.

Book Description
This is one of the first four in a new series of fabulously illustrated natural history travel guides, intended for the general reader with an interest in natural history, and for the growing numbers of 'ecotourists' who want to know where to see wildlife in the countries they visit. The books are designed to complement each other and to build into a nature library, together giving an introduction to the natural history of Europe. France is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and exciting European countries for the naturalist. It is remarkably varied, with an enormous coastline shared between three seas, and vast areas of semi-natural habitats stretching upwards to the highest mountains in Europe. Ecologically, it lies at the crossroads of Europe, and shares species from virtually all the climatic regions in the continent. It is also at the hub of the European migration wheel, and huge numbers of birds pass through on the way to their breeding or wintering grounds. Essentially practical, the book first introduces the ecology, geology, and wildlife of France, then goes on to describe where to see its natural history at its best. There are descriptions of a selection of some 200 sites to visit, each carefully chosen to show a range of habitats and fascinating wildlife. The entries are the personal choice of the author and are based on intensive travel and research in the region. Described sites range in size from a few to thousands of hectares, be they National Parks, nature reserves, or simply common land, but all are open to the public and accessible to the ordinary visitor. Four colour throughout, this book has stunning landscape photographs, line drawings and photographs of individual animals of plants and animals, colour region and site maps, and a splendid composite painting encapsulating typical habitats and their inhabitants.
Book Description
Triathlon is certainly physically demanding, to say the least, but most triathletes would agree that it is the mental aspect that can determine whether or not they achieve their competitive goals. Resources addressing this key aspect have been hard to come by — until now. In The Triathlete's Guide to Mental Training, the authors — both accomplished sport psychologists and Ironman triathletes — offer readers in-depth, practical information and skills they can use to build mental muscle. Readers learn first how to assess their psychological strengths and weaknesses, and then discover the six mental factors that most affect triathlon performance. The book includes essential tools for training and competition, such as routines, mental imagery, and tips on getting organized and setting goals, and also explores what it takes to be an Ironman, the unhealthy side of triathlon, and valuable lessons to be learned from the world's best triathletes.
Customer Reviews:
Good effort not just for tri's.......2007-05-13
I saw the author at the Velo Swap in S.F. in December 2006. Gave a great presentation and his way of thinking fit my training regimen for my bicycling. The style and presentation fit my mindset and when it is rainy, snowy, blowing or just don't care. You realize you are not alone and gives the tools and techniques that get you going. Not your average mental training guide but new stuff and odd angles make you approach your workout and mind in a different way
A Mental Success.......2007-04-10
Success in sports requires as much mental strength as it does physical, and this book will teach you how to approach your sport... and your life.
Must have for the endurance athlete.......2007-01-12
This book was inspiring and a key to my race successes last season. Dr. Taylor enlightens the reader by introducing how the mental aspects of training and racing are integral to success. The reader will learn not only how to approach sports, but also many of the topics discussed apply to all aspects of one's life. Analysis of mental skills and techniques to improve areas of weakness are key points that are discussed. This book was instrumental in my development as an athlete and I often reread sections prior to key races.
The greatest mind strengthening book for any endurance athlete.......2006-04-20
I started reading this book because I was struggling with my bike racing and ironman training. With racing criteriums it involved getting myself ahead in the pack, being worthy of staying in front and preparing physically and mentally for the training load of an ironman triathlon.
Step by step the book slowly guides the reader through numerous stages of fear/suffering/pain management/human emotions under stress--all the wild head games we go through as we walk through our lives. The reader is automatically comforted by the normalcy of human emotion and feeling "okay" with oneself as author Jim Taylor uses direct quotes and examples from professional triathletes who have also suffered the same mental games.
After two weeks of reading the book, I had my first cycling time trial. It took most of my mental patience and mind control to visualize myself hurting, suffering and pushing through the race. On race day I played positive dreams over and over again in my mind (realistic of course.) I practiced the ways of the book and used up every ounce of my physical energy during the race, repeating phrases like "Focus Forward" to drive the energy ahead and ended up winning the race. I truly believe that Jim Taylor's book helped me get in touch with the real competitor inside myself. Not only has it helped my racing and training, but it has helped me accomplish numerous goals in my everyday life.
A wonderful and insightful read. It's been a lot of fun!
A must read for all athletes!.......2006-04-04
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better triathlete. This is the most comprehensive triathlon mental training book I have read and it can benefit triathletes of all levels. This book will help you become a "Prime Triathlete" and gives you important information that you can apply to your training in topics such as motivation, goal setting, positive self-talk, pain management, and making sure triathlon is a healthy part of your life. The quotes, insight, and advise from professional triathles throughout the book are also very effective. This book is a must read for any triathlete!

Customer Reviews:
An incredibly helpful guide.......2002-09-20
I spent 4 months studying abroad in Santiago and this book was indispensible! It had all kinds of information I needed about places to see in the city, restaurants to try and places to shop. It also has a few pages of day trips from the city (Vina del Mar, Valparaiso, and Rancagua) and maps of those places which were really helpful. If you plan to spend a good amount of time in Santiago, this is the book to get. However, if Santiago is just one small stop on your trip throughout Chile, stick with the Lonely Planet Chile guide (also very helpful). The city guide doesn't have too much more to offer, but it is much smaller and easy to take with you anywhere. If you're spending a long amount of time in Santiago, get this book.
not good value for the money.......2002-01-01
My friend and I spent 2 months in Chile -- 1 in santiago, 1 traveling in the south. We had both the LP Chile and LP Santiago, and the latter provides very little beyond what is found in the former. You get a few more maps, but really I expected a lot more for my money. The Santiago book generally struck me as personality free (in contrast to other LP guides, e.g. LP Peru) and it's too bad there's not a Time Out Santiago. The Time Out guides are better in almost every way-- more detailed info, more interesting tidbits, better maps and a much hipper sensibility.
A great guide to a great city, yet to be discovered..........2000-12-29
Having lived in many Latin American cities, such as Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, and also Santiago, I never quite understood why Santiago never ranked along its neighbour major cities in terms of tourism. Indeed, Santiago is a wonderful city all to be discovered. Her nightlife is at least up to the standard of Buenos Aires - and much cheaper ! At least as happening as Rio de Janeiro - and much safer ! The food is fabulous, the people are wonderful, the women are gorgeous. The only black spot on Santiago may be its high level of pollution. But apart from that, I love it ! Finally, here is a guide that contains it all. Advice for the budget traveller as well as more researched data on fine restaurants. Plenty of tips and data. By all means, take this to Santiago with you.
