    Book Description

When the economy was booming, it was hard to find good people. "winning the talent war" was a popular phrase, and those individuals with the right stuff could command hefty salaries and perks. When the economy crumbled, the headhunters were sent packing. Today, companies are starting to hire again, but instead of recruiting a group of fifty, they're hiring five. They're outsourcing and hiring temps. They're replacing staff due to turnovers, retirements, and areas that were downsized, rather than expanding. They're relying on reduced HR departments and in-house managers and staff to make critical staffing decisions. Surprisingly, in this environment, good people are hard to find; the top performers are staying where they are, and it's the weak and marginal performers that make up most of the available talent pool. Talent Balancing draws from the author's 35 years in the field to present a fresh and practical approach to recruiting in today's volatile and uncertain environment. In particular, Talent Balancing will help entrepreneurs and managers without formal recruitment training navigate organizational politics, analyze current and future staffing needs, and execute a successful plan. Whether you are ramping up a new team or department or filling a temporary spot, Talent Balancing provides a wealth of insights and tools to ensure that your organization meets both immediate and long-term goals.

5 out of 5 stars Are people truly your most valued asset?.......2006-06-22

Talent Balancing is for employers who want to pay more than lip service to the line, "people are our most valued asset." My experiences at four Fortune 100 companies has shown that this philosophy and culture of "people first" is often poorly reflected in practice.

This book is a must read for business leaders, hiring managers, and HR professionals. Stedt writes in a very easy to follow style, and his book is complete with checklists for quick referencing later. Talent Balancing offers a thorough guide to finding, growing, and retaining talent. Sometimes, that talent is hidden right under our nose in an employee originally earmarked for other business purposes. It's up to business leaders to uncover the many talents of their employees to unleash their full potential and productivity, and in turn unleash the power of "talent balancing."

5 out of 5 stars A thorough insightful and practical resource!.......2006-03-28

Jim Stedt's book really helped me modernize - not just in thinking about how to build my staff and teams, but how to use modern tools to recruit and manage them. I've shared it with our HR department and also with many job hunters. Staffing is an age-old task but it's a new marketplace with new methodologies for connecting supply with demand. No job hunter, recruiter, interviewer or hiring organization should tackle the task without Talent Balancing - it will pay for itself over and over!

4 out of 5 stars Henry A. Rider, Jr. , President, Process & Quality Consultant.......2006-03-23

This is an excellent source. It is a practical reference for anyone establishing, maintaining and/or developing an organization. This book is a quick read that is enhanced by effective use of case studies. The information contained is contemporary and includes details of search methodology. The sample forms and checklists are a good starting point for the practitioner. It is evident that the viewpoint of the writer is that of someone that is experienced, "hands on" and operating in today's environment. This book is a solid addition to your technical library.

4 out of 5 stars Finding the staff you need.......2006-02-26

Having trouble finding and keeping the talent you need at your company? This book addresses the issues of how to recruit the right employees for your company. For instance, I have seen companies that hire good people, only to lose them by not giving them the right challenges and career paths. Or the people that are hired turn out not to have the skills that needed to be checked before they are hired.

I particularly like the forms and checklists in the book that help you through the recruiting process.

Ernest Hill really went over the top with this book. Once I started reading it, I just couldn't put it down. The book dealt with real life issues that most people encounter everyday. I give Mr. Hill five stars.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW ON BOOK.......2007-05-03

The book made me laugh.Mr. Hill's character development is wonderful. He made me change my mind about the characters several times. His insights into the meanings of love, laughter, and the pain of change are excellent. The wisdom of the people brings new excitement to the reader. This is a remarkable story. I thank the author for coming to class and telling us more about his lies.

4 out of 5 stars Review By: Trevor T. Morris .......2007-05-03

I recently was in a discussion group with the author and my class on the book It's all about the moon when the sun ain't shining. I thought this book was very interesting and would suggest it to anyone who like to read a good book especially one based in Louisiana. The author who turned out to be quite a character explained different details from the book which i found to be quite interesting. I loved the book!!!

"In the dream I see the yellowing Mississippi sky...I feel the edges of the wind, quick and rough a and nearer than l ever believed it could be, cutting an undertow in the now unbreathable air, It is close now, stealing by degrees across the pasture that spreads like a dark, lake behind the store, its black belly bulging straight out as it begins to feed on scrub pine, then on the girded steel of the supermarket, on /be cars once parked in even rows, on living tissue pliant as clay. if there is time, then there is nothing to do but run."

At 4:33 P.M. on March 3, 1966, an F-5 tornado, the deadliest category, struck central Mississippi, killing fifty-seven people. Fourteen of those victims died in South Jackson, thirteen of them in a newly built shopping mall, the Candlestick Shopping Center. In minutes, what had been a row of nearly maintained shops was transformed into a scene of unimaginable devastation. Lives were changed forever. A World Turned Over recounts what happened on the day of the Candlestick Tornado, as it came to be known in Jackson, and how its aftermath still reverberates today.

Returning to the neighborhood where she grew up, Lorian Hemingway remembers the Jackson that she knew: a Southern town defined as much by its warm creeks and catfish ponds and the smell of clay in the air as by its inhabitants -- families with a deep sense of place and of community. When the tornado struck, it destroyed more than buildings and it reached beyond the deaths it caused. For those people who, like Hemingway, grew up there, Jackson changed in an instant from a safe and familiar place into an alien landscape of death and destruction.

Hemingway vividly re-creates the day of the tornado, drawing on both news stories and interviews with survivors. She tells us about Donna Durr, who with her baby was lifted in her car seventy-five feet up into the vortex; Juland Jones, who worked at the local hot dog shop and was the only African-American to die at Candlestick; eighteen-year-old Ronny Hannis, who survived to help rescue others, oblivious to his own life-threatening wounds inflicted by broken flying glass and debris. Returning to the scene more than thirty years later, Hemingway finds many of the survivors and their families still in Jackson, their memories now as much a part of the landscape as the creeks and fields. "A place does not love you," she writes, "only people do, but a place gives up what it is made of in an elemental rush, so that once you breathe it in, the chemistry in you changes."

As lyrical as it is haunting, A World Turned Over is an unforgettable story of awesome destruction and the extraordinary resilience of ordinary people, a moving exploration of faith and hope in the face of tragedy.

                            2 out of 5 stars Could've been a better, shorter book.......2006-02-05

The story of the Candlestick tornado and the people who died as a result of it is sad and shocking, and compelled me to keep reading, but I often found myself skimming through parts of this book. Why? Because the author kept repeating the same information and ideas. The book would have been much more readable and would have had a stronger impact if the repetitive passages had been edited out.

If you have a strong interest in learning more about the sad events and loss of life at Candlestick, you may want to read this book. Be prepared, however, to wade through a lot of excess prose.

I'm afraid I agree with Mr. Rubendall. As a weather afficianado I began WORLD TURNED OVER with enthusiasm, but Ms. Hemingway's self-important florid prose and sticky nostalgia eclipsed the real tragedy that cost many of her chlidhood acquaintances their lives. In dwelling overly long on her own recollections and, one suspects, in trying to ape the style of her famous grandfather (a lack of contractions doesn't make writing more profound, just more pompous!), Ms. Hemingway actually does the Candlestick tornado, its victims, and its survivors, a disservice. The book would have been much better off written in the analytical style and format of, for instance, Sebastian Junger's PERFECT STORM, or Erik Larson's ISAAC'S STORM; more journalistic integrity and less faux lyricism would have benefitted Candlestick's survivors and victims and made this a much more engaging read. If you're fascinated with weather, you'd be better off with the above books--or nonfiction accounts provided by tornado survivors--or just watching the Weather Channel's Storm Story account of the Candlestick tornado. My apologies to the author, but WORLD TURNED OVER was a real disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars A piece of history for a fellow Jacksonian.......2003-09-21

I discovered this book through a mention of it in the New York Times Book Review. It caught my eye because I grew up in Jackson, MS. I had heard about the Candlestick Tornado many times in childhood, but knew little about the details. I really enjoyed Ms. Hemingway's ability to evoke the Jackson environment. We also ran behind the fog machine as children, although I lived in North Jackson and there we called it "the mosquito man." Ms. Hemingway writes lyrically, and her descriptions of the people and families affected by the tornado are quite affecting. I had tears in my eyes several times. The only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 is because the book is a little repetitive, and because I wish she would have told us a little more about the aftermath, how the shopping center owner was able to afford to rebuild his building. A few facts and figures would have added to the book for me. Although I live in the North now, I can say that fellow Southerners will recognize immediately how well Ms. Hemingway describes Southern culture, both then and now. Northerners may learn a thing or two about Southerners by reading this book.

                            5 out of 5 stars lushly written.......2003-09-09

Lorian Hemingway's "A World Turned Over" is beautifully, lushly written. In a dreamer's evocative prose, she tells the story of the severe tornado that struck Jackson, Mississippi, in the spring of 1966, destroying the Candlestick Shopping Center. Hemingway, a girl of 10 at the time, had moved away shortly before the storm came.

More than thirty years later, she returned to there to claim her own memories, and to record the recollections of people whose lives had been forever changed, some by the loss of a family member, some by witnessing sites that burned upon their souls. When they see the sky taking on that peculiar yellow tinge, when they hear the sirens, their bodies respond with pounding hearts, shallow breathing, goosebumps. They react not only to the sight and sounds, but to their own memories.

Suffused with that sense of place which other southern writers also express so well, with the scents, sounds, sights of that region called "home", Hemingway's book will transport you to the Jackson she knew as a child, and to that March afternoon when the familiar world was turned upside down.

This book deserves a wide readership! Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars More childhood memoir than disaster book.......2003-04-01

This book seems out of place in the "disaster book" genre. The author seems more concerned with reliving her childhood. Not a very good read.

5 out of 5 stars Looking out the window at those rabbits.......2007-09-14

Ok, so I was looking out the window and watching these rabbits hop by and got to wondering how one would go about catching one. It just seemed like something that one really ought to know, just in case...

So I ordered this book and it was exactly what I was looking for. I enjoyed the author's style and practicality. Probably won't ever use this information, but now I think I know exactly how to catch that rabbit if I needed to. Of course it might take me a few trys and that rabbit may be more warry than it looks, but at least I'd know where to start.

Now I'll have to find a good book on skinning and cooking rabbits, just in case... ;)

                              5 out of 5 stars A lot of information.......2007-07-26

This book has more information on traps than any other book I have read. The instructions are clear and there are plenty of diagrams.

                              5 out of 5 stars A wealth of knowledge.......2006-12-08

The title to this book is somewhat misleading. It is not a trapper's bible. This book covers do-it-yourself snares, homemade box traps and path guards. However, it covers these topics better than I have ever seen before. I learned more about these topics in the 1 1/2 hours it took me to read this book than I did in 4 years of online research/fooling around, etc.
The basics of snaring are explained extremely well. The illustrations are wonderful and more than adequatly explain every point. Many of his tricks and sets of snares are so clever you wonder why you never though of them.
His box trap plans are pure genius and wonderfully explained. I havent found another source for such amazing trap plans or ideas.
Basically, this book will teach you everything you need to know about snaring. The only thing it leaves out is instructions on what to use to attract and where to set(with some exceptions). He does explain some but not much, it's generally common sense (although you can never assume things like that).
IF YOU ARE GETTING INTO SNARING OR JUST WANTING TO HAVE SOME FUN, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. IT WILL GIVE YOU A PROVERBIAL "CRASH COURSE" IN SNARING

An excellent source for the complete novice. Martin's work is clear, complete and even humorous. As someone who did not even know the difference between a trap or a snare, I can highly recommend this book as a first step in finding out. The illustrations are flawless. I am someone mildly concerned about the impact of Y2K and this book was a wealth of information on being able to provide meat for yourself in the event of emergencies. Happy reading!

I have read all of Mr. Martin's books and I highly recommend them. Trapper's Bible is excellent as well as Into The Primitive, both of which are available here at Amazon.com (a great book store I also recommend!) I also heartily recommend THE SHOT by Dale Martin which details the most talked about long range sniper shot of the Civil War. It is available at AOL Hometown with keyword "sniper". Great work, Dale !

I think this book was very emotionally moving,
                                  when her mother dies,
it makes you think about if you lost your mother,
                                  how you would feel.
