Book Description

Hugely popular when it was first published in 1911, and regarded as a classic ever since, Where the Money Grows is an honest, humorous, and richly perceptive tour of Wall Street and its enduring customs, institutions, and characters. The Street, according to author Garet Garrett, is a world populated not only by bulls and bears, but also by "wolves," "hoodoos," and "invisibles." You'll meet them all in this immensely entertaining and revealing book.

Also included is a scintillating article, "Anatomy of the Bubble," originally published in the Saturday Evening Post. In piercing prose, Garrett unmasks the "debt" bubble and displays uncanny prescience. Debt, it would seem, can be every bit as dangerous as manias and other "irrational exuberance."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Good Quick Read.......2000-12-18

Overall, I believe that most Wiley Investment Classics fall into two different categories, books that are indispensable and fascinating reads, and books that are to be purchased, suffered through as long as possible, and then placed on the shelf for display. "Where the Money Grows" belongs in a third cateogry with "Where are the Customer's Yachts" by Schwed - this is a fantastic quick read with some very pointed insight on Wall Street.

This book is best if you actually work in investment banking, and are not an investor looking for financial wisdom. There are some great chapters on the types of people that you run into in the investment banking world, most of which are recognizable to anyone. The chapter on "Wall Street Habits" is a great commentary on the self-prescribed routines of most people in finance. These words still ring true some 70 years after they were first written. Other chapters on "The Hoodoo" about the bad luck deal guy that everybody in banking knows at least one of, are very pointed. Everybody knows the guy that just can't close anything, regardless of how they are involved. I also enjoyed Chapter 8, "The Invisibles," good for anybody who ever wondered who "they" are, as well as Chapter 11, "Taking Trouble Home" which brilliantly illustrates how people often removed from the market are able to see it with greater clarity.

This is a good little book - I recommend reading it.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A737873. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study is a qualitative examination of how live television news coverage during armed conflicts affects military operational security and U.S. foreign policy. Through a review of literature on the history of media-military relations, an examination of current military policies and procedures, and a comparative analysis of opinions expressed by military public affairs and broadcast media representatives, the author assesses how live television news coverage affects U.S. military operations. The author concludes that since live television coverage has become standard in today's low-intensity conflicts, the military must make contingency plans for broadcast media during wartime operations. Unlike the days of old when the military could limit media access to the war zone through pool arrangements or denial of entry, the media are now often in place and broadcasting even before U.S. forces arrive in the area. Wartime friction often occurs between the military and the broadcast media because of the lack of institutional understanding between the two entities. Reporters often have little military knowledge or combat experience and most military members are unfamiliar with broadcast media procedures. To alleviate this and to build trust, enhanced peacetime programs are necessary to bring the two institutions together for regular talks and exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Good for basic anatomy.......2006-11-10

Got this book for a college level human anatomy course. Compared with other similar level anatomy books this one ranks high. Generally easy to read and interesting enough to keep one reading. Overall its an anatomy book and as such it should provide a good overview of human anatomy with just enough physiology to keep one interested in the material and provide a greater insight into what it is your learning, thereby helping to keep the material relevant and easy to recall. And as such this book meets expectations.

The book was lost in the mail. I, however, received a full refund on my purchase. I did receive the atlas that went with it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best text books I've read yet..........2002-10-21

I have the new 5th edition. As a nursing student this text has been extremely easy to read and understand the concepts. It keeps you interested in the information with practical examples and lively dialogue and includes helpful memory tips. It also comes with a cd-rom and access to a web site that really help you study and review the material. My only complaint is the chemistry chapter (Chpt. 2) is a little long and dry but then that is probably due to the subject matter and not the author. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

This book was verey good for many of the areas that I wanted to learn about. It did lack a little in the basics and in defining word roots. over all this was one of the better anatomy books that I have used.

                    Book Description

The Soil and Health was published in 1945, just before agricultural corporations surged to global proportions. Sir Albert Howard's work is a major inspiration to the growing organic and sustainable farming movement and a thought-provoking reminder of a road not taken in developing mainstream agriculture during the past half-century.

The central tenet of Howard's philosophy is that healthy soil, vegetation, animals, and humans are connected and that undernourishment of soil is the source of modern agricultural and health problems. In Howard's estimation, heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers will ultimately lead to widespread disease and destruction of vibrant communities. As the environmental and social consequences of industrial farming are being hotly debated, The Soil and Health remains vital to understanding what is at stake in the battle between chemical and organic farming.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Early Book on Organic Agriculture.......2007-04-04

The Soil and Health is a wonderful book that is equal parts agricultural science and environmental advocacy, with just a dash of kooky Nature worship thrown in. Howard was a conventionally trained agricultural scientist in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century who was employed by the British government to bring modern industrial agriculture, based on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides to Britain's tropical colonies. Soon, though, he realized the value of more traditional agricultural practices from India and China, especially in keeping the microbial, fungal and invertebrate life in the soil healthy.

If you believe in the value of organic agriculture, it is somewhat sad to see how little has changed since 1945. Howard confidently predicts in his book that organic methods based on compost would soon sweep the globe. Things have changed some, though. We can now buy "organic" labeled products in most markets in America, and I believe that more people have an appreciation for the importance of treating the earth well. This book does an excellent job of establishing and reinforcing that appreciation.

                                Book Description

The nineteenth century began with reverence for nature and ended with the apotheosis of art. In this wide-ranging excursion through the literature, visual arts, and natural sciences of the era from Wordsworth to Wilde, Carl Woodring traces shifting ideas and attitudes concerning nature, art, and the relations between the two.

The veneration of nature as aesthetic model and ethical norm was gradually eroded not least by the study of biology, which revealed organic nature to be wasteful and murderous. Darwin's work verified the growing perception of nature as amoral by stressing the role of chance in natural selection, a further blow to trust in natural law. Once nature was not worth imitating, art by the century's close could be an end to itself, free of responsibility to the natural.

The author examines individual works by Romantic and Victorian poets; narrative prose from James Hogg and Mary Shelley to Conrad, James, and Stevenson; painters from Wilkie through the Pre-Raphaelites to Whistler--all within such general contexts as the picturesque, the sublime, natural theology, romantic irony, romantic Hellenism, realism, photography, aestheticism, arts and crafts, art nouveau, and decadence. Although Woodring focuses on events, movements, and creative minds in England, he also draws upon a range of seminal figures from the Continent and the United States: Alexander von Humboldt, Delacroix, Thomas Cole, and Hawthorne are prominent examples. Nature into Art will fascinate scholars and amateurs of movements in literature, art, science, and cultural history in the Western world after 1780.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Primer to get started.......2007-02-26

I have started fishing more with my sons, so I thought it would be useful to buy a few books to make sure that I know the lingo, and do not make a fool of myself. Cliff Hauptman's books is a nice primer with lots of useful information. In it, he discusses the basic equipment and tackle needed, and various types of fish that are commonly sought. I found the information quite useful, and well worth the read. Some of the pictures and diagrams are not the best, but I felt more confident the next time I went out on the lake with my boys. Plus, we caught more fish, which is always nice.

If you are new to fishing, and looking for a quick read to get started, then I recommend this book. If you are more seasoned, this is probably not a great choice. Good luck, and see you at the lake.

                                4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-07-06

I fished quite a bit growing up, but got away from it while in college. Recently I wanted to get back into it, so I needed some more grown-up gear. This book was quite valuable in helping me figure out what equipment I needed and what I didn't. The author's reccomendations of what lures to buy were especially helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Still in print means something.......2006-03-20

I was searching for another fishing book when I saw that Cliff Hauptman was still in print. Even though I was not a total novice, I learned a lot from this book. And panfishermen should note that this is practically the only book that addresses crappies, bluegills and like that.

I'm now an occasional fisherman, doing my best on extended backpacking trips to extend my diet with trout. Lightweight tackle is not a topic Hauptmann gives any ink to, and if you want to actually clean that fish you just caught, Hauptman is silent (but check out Mark Bittman's _Fish_ for good graphics and how-to).

Others have citicised the "cheesy" photos in this book. I don't get it. All the photos seem to be of Chris Hauptman and his wife demonstrating pole-handling techniques described in immediately related text--what more could you ask? Even though I'm a side-arm caster, Hauptman knows his stuff and makes it clear.

Negatives: Another reviewer liked the drawings of various fish species mentioned in the text, but the one on the cover is all anyone needs.

A good book for the beginning fisherman. I was disappointed that there was not more information on the presentation of the various artificial lures.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for every begginer!.......2005-09-14

The book is written in a style that is friendly to a begginer. There are a couple of chapters which actually narrate the experience of a fishing expedition. Way helpful. The book is not in depth, but the title does say "BASIC". A great How-to book.

The previous review is slightly mistaken about the area this book covers. The reason they dont have Transylvania mentioned on the cover is because the book covers Romania and also the seperate country of Moldova. So none of the regions of Romania are mentioned on the cover and the title as shown is accurate. Anyway, the book is great, I travelled around in the company of a Moldovan who was also impressed by the book. The only places it falls down are the details, and I can forgive this as the country is changing rapidly as it heads towards membership of the EU.

I thoroughly recommend this book, and indeed any in the Lonely Planet series.

This book came in handy during my entire stay in Romania. It also pointed out little known monuments. This is definitely a comprehensive book on many levels...I wonder why they left out Transylvania on the cover though.

Modern Day Romania is comprised of the former country Romania, Moldovia, and Transylvania.
This book is chocked full of information. This book is not intended to be a phrase book and it's entire emphasis is the unique sentence structure that the Romanian language requires.

I was there because one of the books I authored was translated into Romanian by the Sibiu Monetary Financial Commodities Exchange.

I found the author's tone supercilious and condescending, and the people I met and places I visited MUCH more warm and inviting than this book would suggest. The only place I found people a little "snotty" in the whole country was Bucharest - and they were nicer than the average Manhattanite, that's for sure! Your ideas about poverty and wealth WILL be challenged, your sense of humor will be expanded and thoroughly spanked, and if you don't try to buy everything that isn't for sale (or haggle over already [low] prices) you'll be amazed at how generous people are, too. Yes there are tourist traps galore, with inflated prices and rotten service, but not nearly as many as in say, the average coastal town in Maine.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide for an in-depth trip through Romania.......1999-03-17

After having spent two weeks last summer as well as several small ventures in and out of the country in the fall, I have to say that this guide is by far the best one to use for travels throughout Romania. There are a few inconsistencies here and there regarding buses, restaurants and hotels (most notably price-wise...quite forgiveable), but overall the book is extremely well put together and informative. I had the Rough Guide for Romania throughout my travels, but I always found myself using LP's guide instead. The only thing I would recommend for an improvement is the inclusion of a few more "off the beaten path" areas such as the Csango enclave in Moldavia and the Kalotaszeg region in Transylvania (the brief mention of the Kalotaszeg is rather insubstantial), as well as the oft-ignored Danubian town of Braila, which has a very pleasant and attractive town center. Perhaps it could use more expanded sections on Wallachia and Moldavia as well, since Transylvania is by far the most covered region in the book (an understandable decision, though it sometimes seems as though coverage of other areas is too skimpy in comparison). Regardless, for the first edition of the guide, LP has done an excellent job, and I'm sure the next edition will see a few more additions to fill out the book.

The guide section on Moldova is exceptionally helpful and accurate. It can be depended upon for correct and accurate information. A couple latebreaking items of information: The Wam's burger outlet is now closed. McDonalds has opened in Chisinau. The current enxchange rate is L4.58 = US$1. The exchange rate for the currency of Transdniestr (the Kupon) is now 846,000 Kupon = US$1.

I hve always been a of Lonely planet, and this book is no exception. The size is easy to carry around and it is filled with great information. The only down side is that there is little information on public transportation and the maps are only okay. Over all, the good wins and I found this book to be very useful. While walking down the street one day we even ran into the musicians pictured on the cover!

A great guide to the city for a first-timer. The walking tours were very useful in my exploration, and the recommendations were usually on point. The only problem was the restaurant recommendations, where many were full of tourists, all using the LP guide. But that's a minor problem for a useful, comprehensive guide to the city. I spent four days there and had a blast.

This book was small enough to carry around the whole time which is a big plus compared to those other bulky books. The map in the back wasn't detachable but it still really helped me in getting around. It very good in recommending what to see, how to walk around the city, and how long it would take to do all the things. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Pocket Guide.......2007-05-12

This slim volume contains pretty much all you need for a short trip to Budapest. There are plenty of maps, albeit very small. The highlights section is nice as well as the photographs and suggestions for walking tours. A great little carry along.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Literate Guide.......2006-07-20

I travel extensively and, after long experience, I find the Lonely Planet guides the best, so I now buy them automatically and am never disappointed. Still, they do vary in quality. The Budapest guide, however, is among the best.

I appreciate how well this guide is written. The introduction, which sets the tone for the book, is literate and is good writing, as writing. The history chapter, not too long, but also not too superficial for this type of book, gave me an insight into Hungary that I found invaluable in enjoying my five-day visit to Budapest. Although the edition is several years old (I think a new one is about to come out), it was amazingly up-to-date and accurate. I followed several of the walking tours in the guide, and they were all well thought out and enjoyable, with a great deal of relevant information about the sights I saw.

In short, this is about as good as a general travel guide gets.

I really liked this book. When Jessica joins Club X, Bruce Patman keeps fixing it so she is dared to do more and more dangerous things. But she getting her own back in the end! This book was very funny and exciting in the end part.I would advise anyone to buy it who hates bruce patman!
