    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars What a Great Reminder.......2006-09-22

Richard Battle does an amazing job of describing in this powerful book what makes him successful, not only in business but in life. It stands as an important reminder as to what we all need to be doing out there in the world to make our own positive impact.

His interlaced stories really bring his important lessons to life in a practical and easy to understand manner that people of any age can and will relate to. I found this book extremely inspirational and relevant to today's society as many of us have forgotten what character means.

I highly recommend this book. It will be an treasured item in my personal library and something I look forward to sharing with my two young boys as they grow older.

          Book Description

There is no doubt that irrigation makes a major contribution to agricultural production, making a whole range of crops viable in an otherwise unreliable climate and helping insure against drought. However irrigation does not automatically guarantee a profit and acclaim, it is a high cost exercise, using water from increasingly scarce supplies, and contributes to environmental concerns of the community. Many of the pressures facing some irrigators have been caused by a lack of understanding in the past of best practices necessary in design, installation and management.

Alternative methods of irrigation are presented, emphasising the characteristics of each that may make them suitable (or unsuitable) for particular situations. The range of crops under irrigation is very wide, and so too is the range of methods available to get water to them. Horticultural crops are included as well as broadacre crops. This section is followed by technical information of the various components that make up an irrigation system, and their installation.

Irrigation is concerned with providing the optimum soil moisture conditions for plant growth. So to is drainage, in that too much water in the soil will retard growth. Many of the concepts surrounding irrigation are applicable to a consideration of drainage, so the book discusses that technology as well.

            Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for domestic water pumps for farm and home use excluding irrigation pumps across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for domestic water pumps for farm and home use excluding irrigation pumps. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                          Book Description

First observed by Galileo, Saturn lies in the distant reaches of the solar system; it is the sixth planet, a gaseous giant between Jupiter and Uranus. It takes its name from the mythological father of Jupiter and Roman god of agriculture. Because of the famous circle of rings Saturn is one of the most well-regarded occupants of the galaxy. Despite their continuous appearance from Earth, the rings are actually space dust and debris trapped by Saturn's gravitational pull, a fact garnered from several satellite passes and telescope observations. The origin of Saturn's rings, however, remains a mystery. Apart from the rings, we also are aware of its moon system, with the most intriguing planetoid called Titan, itself having been the subject of science fiction speculation as a home to life. Saturn has been visited by Pioneer 11 and the two Voyager probes, with Cassini slated to arrive in 2004. Our study of this most intriguing planet will continue into the foreseeable future, with the hopes of resolving the mysteries it hides.

This book provides a thorough and interesting overview of Saturn, from its initial observation centuries ago to the contemporary satellite fly-bys. Anyone captivated by the mysteries of space and the wonders of Saturn needs to understand the background covered here. After the overview is a substantial and carefully selected set of abstracts of literature pertaining to Saturn, with easy access then given through author, title, and subject indexes.

This book covers the boreal forest, from the types of soil to the average temperatures and atmospheric content found at these higher latitudes. The book is more scientific and comprehensive than one would find in a Peterson field guide, for example, but is written in a similar vein. This is a very good place to start if you're interested in more esoteric subjects such as muskeg or the amount of carbon found in soils at northern latitudes. Pielou delivers another winner.

This is the perfect book for the serious amateur naturalist or the freshman Natural Historian who will be spending any time in the northern treelands.Pielou uses a combination of clear-non-technical prose and beautiful pen-and-ink illustrations to take us through the key species and ecological relationships of the region. What is particularly delightful about the book is that although one doesn't have to be a botanist to follow the discussions, one feels always that one is in the hands of a master ecologist and writer -there are always the questions behind the questions that lead us to further understand and appreciate what we are seeing. This is the shortest of Pielou's books that I have yet read, but it is just the right size to sling into your backpack as you head off for a field station this winter, or to have by your bed when you get back & want to look up "just whatever THAT was..."

4 out of 5 stars Seeing the Forest and the Trees.......2001-01-29

For one who lives, as I do, within the heart of the temperate rainforest, I cannot escape the din of poliotically charged rhetoric about what needs doing and saving. And rarely now do publishers resist the temptation of putting out one more tract. That is why it is so delightful to get hands on a slim volume written by someone who is really an ecologist - I do not mean an environmental advocate -- although Chris Pielou has been that too, but someone who has a real grasp of the theory and the natural history on which bona fide ecology depends.

In "The World Of Northern Evergreens" Pielou takes us on a trip into the forest, in order to answer "two simple questions" that really are one: how did this magnificent kind of ecosystem become what it is? She is so knowledgeable about the subject that she can gracefully weave in to an account of some creature or plant, just enough theory or metaphor that you can start to really "get it", and figure out what makes these places work. Only in her brief and wise epilog does she draw explicitly the lessons about the sensistivity, indeed the non-renewable nature of northern evergreen forests. The book has many beautifully clear pen drawings of the habitats and the organisms described. A lynx of p. 142 watches the reader so attentively that it was a bit unsettling!

Put this on you shelf and, more important, sling into your pack when and if you have the good fortune to visit these special places.

A beautifully edited anthology that will appeal not only to devotees of the sweet science, but to any fan of great writing. Silverman includes work by some of America's greatest essayists (Liebling, Plimpton, Mailer, Baldwin) and most popular fiction authors (O. Henry, Jack London, Dashiell Hammett, Damon Runyon, Richard Ford). The excerpt from Pierce Egan's 1829 classic BOXIANA (a favorite of A.J. Liebling's) is a special treat. The only thing missing is David Remnick on Muhammad Ali; but you can't expect everything from a 368-page collection. Highly recommended.

There is so much good writing on boxing that it's hard to know where to start picking the best, but Jeff Silverman did an amazing job of putting together a collection that honors the old warhorses and still comes up with new surprises. Some of the great writers of the 20th century are represented with their short stories -- Ring Lardner, Damon Runyon, Dashiell Hammett, Irwin Shaw and Jack London. It was fun to find that writers like O. Henry and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about boxing, too. In the non-fiction corner, selections by Frank Deford, Norman Mailer, George Plimpton, James Baldwin and Robert Lipsyte were all first rate, and some of the really old writing from the 18th and 19th century was lively and entertaining. With its sweep of boxing history and literature, it's a must for every boxing fan's bookshelf.

                              Book Description

College guides are a must for any teenager trying to choose the right school. Unfortunately, most guidebooks are vague, boring tomes written by administrators and journalists, instead of the real expertsÂ-the college students that actually go there. StudentsÂ' Guide to Colleges is different. Entirely student-written and edited, this invaluable resource cuts through the cant with comprehensive listings of the vital statistics and requirements for AmericaÂ's top 100 schools accompanied by three totally honest, fresh, fun-to-read descriptions penned by attending undergrads from different walks of life. Want to know how big classes really are? How rigorous the academics get? Or how greek or granola, chill or up-tight, homogenous or diverse, gay or straight, a campus really is? Lively, irreverent, and insightful, the StudentsÂ' Guide to Colleges is the only guidebook that offers multiple perspectives on each school and tells it like it is so that college applicants can make the best choice when deciding where they want to spend their college years.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2007-10-16

This book is so amazing (and I can justifiably say that because I am a prospective college student). This book includes 100 schools, and each school has 3 students that filled out a questionare about their college. This book is so great because it offers 3 different points of view, and not from people who are just telling you canned stuff about the college like admissions officers. It even has a question that asks what an admissions counselor might not mention on a tour. As a prospective college student, this gave me such a great view on the colleges I am looking at. The 3 reviews allows you to distinguish between those students that are exaggerating and those who are censoring. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the top schools- not just Ivy League (because believe me, I am not Ivy material and this book was still amazing) but any colleges. I read so much of this book, and I was able to throw out certain colleges and add other colleges to my list that had not been on my radar. Since I read all those reviews, I have a much better understanding of college life in general, and each college's student's life specifically.
I could rant and rave about this book forever, but I recommend you see for yourself. Look and make sure you are interested in at least one of the schools in the book, and, heck, you might be surprised to find a school you never would have thought of before--I know I did.

5 out of 5 stars Great secondary source of information.......2007-08-16

If you are going to get more than one college guide, I highly recommend this volume. For each of the top 100 colleges, it contains three long essays by students who attend. You should get a great feel for what its like to attend these colleges. One of the coauthors, by the way, was a prospective student being tracked in "The Gatekeepers"--an insightful book abut the whole college admissions process.

                              3 out of 5 stars Mixed!.......2007-03-13

My biggest problem is that most of the students were from the same state that the school is located it. Therefore, not very helpful for people out of state which we are. There was one section that was helpful--things that the administration probably wouldn't want you to know but overall disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful review for parents.......2007-02-07

I found a lot of information in this book, which is not found in some of the other college review books. Even though it is not realistic to get a complete picture about a college/university based on the opinion of 2-3 students, it is very informative to hear the students perspective. For some institutions the reviews were very uniform among the 3 students, and for some were completely contradictory.....but still quite useful!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful! The best!.......2007-01-29

This book is very helpful for getting the feel of a college, especially when said college is too far away for a visit. Each college is reviewed extensively by 3 different current students, who answer open-ended questions such as "What is the college's reputation? Is this accurate?" and "what would a prospective student not see on the college tour?" Reading the book feels much like chatting with the students in person. The size is more manageable than most guides (about 8 inches square by 1 inch deep) which means that one can carry it around in a bag and read it anywhere. I only wish that this book included more than 100 colleges; a few of the less-prestigious colleges I'm really interested in aren't included. All in all, just about the best college guide I've seen.

Out of the Night That Covers Me takes place a decade before the civil rights movement, but the spirit of the coming upheaval hangs over its pages as heavily as the humidity of an Alabama summer. Pat Cunningham Devoto's second novel revolves around two characters: John McMillan, a precocious, sheltered 8-year-old sent to live with poor relations after his mother's death, and Tuway, an African American with a foot in both the black and white worlds. Their stories intersect when the powerful Judge Vance takes an interest in John. He brings the boy to work at the Planters and Merchants Bank of Lower Peach Tree, where the mysteriously disfigured Tuway acts as his assistant. The judge, we soon learn, is no judge at all. Instead, his title is an allusion to his economic omnipotence: "He the one says if you get a crop loan or not. Round here, if you gets a crop loan, you can make it, and if you don't, you might just as well go on off down the road."

A suspiciously large number of black families have done just that, defaulting on debts and fleeing Alabama's cotton fields for the factories of Chicago. But who provides the money and means for their flight? As John learns more about the financial and political intrigues of Lower Peach Tree, he dreams of making his own escape from his abusive new family. The events that follow forge an unlikely alliance between the silent, wounded black man and the equally wounded orphan--and test their courage in unexpected ways.

As skillfully as Devoto evokes time and place, her novel is not without flaws. John's voice, for example, tends toward the irritatingly precious, and the writing sometimes falls flat. Yet the author movingly portrays the ways poverty can both pinch lives into meanness (witness the case of John's alcoholic Uncle Luther) and challenge people to face their problems together, as in the all-black community known as the Bend. If this juxtaposition of violence and cooperation seems a little, well, black and white, that's part of the book's charm; its moral sureties belong to a time when good and evil were as easy to distinguish in life as they are in fiction. --Chloe Byrne

An orphaned white boy and an eccentric black man forge an unlikely friendship in the segregated world of 1950s Alabama. The boy, John, whose beloved mother has died, now faces a loveless future with his alcoholic uncle on a sharecroppers farm in the Alabama Black Beltan abusive life he soon dreams of escaping. The black man, Tuway, works by day in the town bank. By night, he helps other blacks escape the poverty of the rural South to find a new life in Chicago. As he negotiates the schism between black and white cultures, Tuway is forced to include a desperate John into his double life. In a bid to change their livesand help others in needTuway and John take on the threats and challenges that foreshadow the great Civil Rights upheaval of the 1960s. My Last Days as Roy Rogers (Warner 1/99), Pat Cunningham Devotos critically acclaimed hardcover debut, won widespread praise in publications, including Booklist, Denver Post, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal among others.

In Bainbridge, Alabama, eight-year-old John Gallatin McMillan III has been the center of his mother's world, cloistered and pampered, until she unexpectedly dies. Taken away by his one remaining relative, his mother's sister, John soon learns that the new home awaiting him in Lower Peach Tree is a run-down tenant farm in the heart of the Alabama Black Belt. There he is thrust into a life alien to anything he has ever known, working long hours in the fields for his violent, alcoholic uncle. As John fights for his survival, he comes to identify with the struggles of the poor blacks he encounters and imagines that his salvation lies in escape to Chicago, just as they feel that their own survival depends on going north to a new life. Instead, a twist of fate brings him to the Bend, a black settlement that has become a refuge for outcasts. Here John meets Mama Tuway, a powerful black healer; Ella, a young mother damaged by the ravages of abuse; and Tuway, a man straddling the black and white cultures and leading a dangerous double life. But none of them--or anyone in Lower Peach Tree--will be ready for the brutal confrontation between blacks and whites, and how it will foreshadow the historic struggle about to sweep across the country. A powerful drama of prejudice and lost innocence, indomitable courage, and the secret corners of a child's heart, OUT OF THE NIGHT THAT COVERS ME is a testament to Pat Cunningham Devoto's extraordinary talent. Here is a writer who can make us smile and ache within the same sentence, and in a way no writer has ever done before.

5 out of 5 stars I Love to read Devoto!.......2004-09-23

After being captivated by My Last Days As Roy Rogers and passing it along to a chain of avid readers hungry for good fiction, I was thrilled to see another offering by Pat Cunningham Devoto. When I find an author who knows how to weave narrative and dialogue expertly so that I am swept into the story, I clamor for more. I devoured this book within 2 days and sent it on it's way down the reader chain of freinds.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful read by Pat Cunningham Devoto.......2004-08-05

I rarely write a review, though I read many. The review that takes the book almost page by page is not a helpful review to me. I would rather see that the reader was totally captivated by the book, the words, the story. "Out of the Night That Covers Me" is such a book. Ms Devoto's first book "My Last Days as Roy Rogers" was the same. A delicious read.

The name put me off and I still do not understand the title in relationship to the book and titles are important. But when I saw it was the same author I knew I wanted it.

Stories of the south are interesting because of the different lifestyles that southern's seem to have had (or so it seems to me) It is a thought provoker. I personally like a book that has substance that stays with me, one that makes me think not only of the past but of the future.

When I have a book that I don't want to end, I know I have read a book that I would recommend. This one is that and then some!

5 out of 5 stars Why Wasn't This Book A National Best Sellor?.......2002-04-24

I have read many best selling and award winning novels and found them wanting. One wonders sometimes - "Why did this book get an award." My question about OUT OF THE NIGHT.... is "Why didn't it get an award?" As a student of the South, this book gives an interesting look at the South of the 1950's and the changing social norms. Change is a major theme in the book and it would be interesting to discuss with a book club or with students the examples of change. The characters are well developed, although I thought some of the black characters were not as well developed. It would be interesting to do a comparison of Aunt Nelda and Mrs. Vance. Although they appear much different, they have much in common. And likewise between John and Little Luther. The book is magical and a wonderful read and would be excellent for a book club. It could give rise to great discussions and the edition I have has questions included. Don't start it unless you have time to read the whole thing. For those who liked TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD it's a must read.

Out of the Night That Covers Me is a wonderful, magical book. Ms. DeVoto's lyrical style has captured the essence of the time in a way that draws you right into the story and never lets you go. The characters--whom I loved--are so real, I'd know them if I met them on the street. This book should win prizes.

Upon seeing the title, I was not sure what the book would be about. It is the story about John who is sent to the South to live with his aunt's family once his mother passed away. John, always being one with his nose in a book, is thrown out into the sun to grow cotton. Eventually John decides to go to Chicago but never makes it, and lives in the Swamps.
This is a very good story with great descriptions of scenery and plot.
