        Book Description

        Sugar is a major crop for many less developed countries, but major barriers exist to its international trade. Both the EU and US distort the world sugar market through various internal policies. With the growth in production of other sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, the controversy surrounding international sweetener markets has further increased. This book addresses these issues and reviews world sweetener markets, with particular chapters devoted to important players such as the US and EU, as well as other producers such as Australia, Brazil, Cuba, Eastern Europe and India. Topics such as international trade negotiations, trade liberalization, US policy reform, and regional integration in Latin America and the Caribbean are also addressed.

            Book Description

            Accretion disks are the focus of a great deal of current rresearch, and selected papers by a number of internationally acclaimed authors are included in this volume. Recent observations have revealed a variety of accretion phenomena that cannot be accounted for by the standard picture of accretion disks. Advection dominated disks are replacing the standard model, and the first extensive examination of their various aspects is included here. Papers also address some more fundamental issues concerning basic physics of accretion disks. In all, this text is an up-to-date overview of the best of the current research in accretion disks.

              Book Description

              The new edition of this comprehensive text continues to provide a detailed and up-to-date account of research on visual perception, while maintaining the emphasis of earlier editions on the functional context of vision. Reflecting recent theoretical developments, the book is organised around the distinction between two broad functions of vision, to provide awareness and to control action. br In Part I, the account of visual processing in the brain has been extensively updated, and evidence from neuroimaging and neuropsychology has been integrated into a critical account of the 'two pathways' theory of visual cortex. The revision of chapters in Part II has given particular attention to recent advances in integrating psychophysical, physiological and computational approaches to problems such as the perception of surfaces and of motion. With the help of new illustrations, full introductions are provided to the key mathematical concepts used in these areas. In Part III, three new chapters draw on evidence from both animal and human behaviour to cover optic flow and locomotion, the timing of actions, and perception of the social world. The concluding chapter considers critically the wider theoretical implications of the distinction between awareness and action as separate functions of vision. br i Visual Perception, Fourth Edition /i will be an invaluable resource for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology, biology, physiology and neuroscience, as well as researchers in the fields of visual neuroscience, visual perception and animal behaviour.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-09-28

              This is a great book for graduate studies of perception. It is very detailed in covering important topics and it is up to date with most recent research. The amount of detail sometimes can be overwhelming, so I wouldn't recommend it for undergraduates. The authors sometimes get side tracked into lengthy discussions of a particular subject, but overall it's a good book. I received it within days of my order and for a better price that I could get in the book store.

              4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but the best out there.......2002-07-12

              I have used this book for over ten years now as one of the texts in an intermediate level cognitive science course on perception and action. Each year I review the new offerings in the field, and each year I come back to this book as the best available. Its greatest strengths are (1) the thoroughness with which it covers both the theoretical disputes and the empirical literature on vision, (2) its broadly interdisciplinary nature, including work from the neurosciences, artificial intelligence, and human and animal behavior, and (3) its emphasis on the deep connections between how we see and how we move. This combination of approaches is simply not to be found in any other book on vision. Understanding the last of these -- that the way we see is thoroughly integrated with how we move about in the world -- will change your view of a great many things about human nature.

              What keeps it from being perfect? The writing style of the book is clunky at times, and sometimes the exposition isn't as clear as it could be, so that readers who are new to the subject may have to work hard at some points to understand some of the more complex material. However, you'll be rewarded for your efforts if you make them. All in all, a great introduction to a fascinating set of issues.

              5 out of 5 stars You gotta read it!.......2000-06-11

              Whatever your interest area is, related to perception, of course, here you can find a very complete guide to visual perception; not very simple, neither too deep, just what you need for becoming almost an expert in a short time.

                Book Description

                Clubs don't play the game, the golfer does! The only way to achieve lower handicaps is to improve the function of the golfer, the person who actually swings the club. Proper self-conditioning is vital to reach peak performance. Whether you are a golfer, a golf pro or a fitness professional, this book is key to improving the game of golf.

                You will understand:
                - How tight muscles affect the swing and what to do about them.
                - Why warming up before playing can dramatically enhance play.
                - The correct way to train for improved flexibility, strength and power.
                - The difference between functional strengthening exercises for golf and bodybuilding-type exercises that are not beneficial for the game.
                - Why breaking the Flexibility - Stability - Strength - Power formula can break your body!

                Golfers using the Whole in One formula have often added over 30 yards to their drive within three months! Why be on par with other golfers when The Golf Biomechanic's Manual gives you the very tools to excel above the rest?

                5 out of 5 stars every serious trainer or golfer should buy this.......2007-06-27

                Train smart guys! This manual is fantastic. If you're gonna train, you should seriously take this into consideration, at least as a template. The bread and butter is the fact that he addresses postural distortions and biomechanical tests, which I can say 80% of the trainers in the US don't do.

                5 out of 5 stars quality and timeliness.......2005-09-19

                the book came as represented very new wonderful condition and timely; but with a 30% discount which was hard to find elsewhere

                5 out of 5 stars An extremely well written book with the layman in mind!.......2004-03-08

                The Fitness Professional will find themselves refering to this book ever so often as it covers all areas from the reason why one should be conditioned for this sport to flexibility tests, the importance of stretching and how to warm up for golf (- an area most often skipped by golf enthusiats) functional exercise (- and the importance of it) strength & power exercises. An important aspect is also that exercises should be progressed from flexibility to stability to strength and finally power to enhance performance and be injury free. The diagrams are excellent for convincing and explaining to clients. Infact the concepts in this book has carry over to any other sport that requires you to move as an integrated whole!!

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-03-03

                If you golf or train golfers this book is a must. Hands down the best most complete book on golf conditioning on the market today.

                5 out of 5 stars A Hole in One!.......2004-02-27

                Paul Chek's Golf Biomechanic's book shows us there is more to a sport and how to get more from your game with functional core and coordination exercises corectly. I use this book to show my clients where they are lacking in their swing and when their muscles are not `turning on'. The diagrams are detailed and correct for amateur and for the elite athlete.
                At my clinic, JS Strength and Health, I also use Gold Biomechanic's for the elite Equestrian riders. Because strength and coordination can be weak at any level and this book show us parallels between many sports.

                  "Self-publishing," say authors Tom and Marilyn Ross, "is a perfect example of the American dream." The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing, then, is an aspiring self-publisher's dream. "This isn't a book of fancy theory," as the authors put it; "it's a practical handbook of state-of-the-art specifics." In 521 pages, it lays out everything you need to know to publish your own books, from start-up considerations to the possibility of selling to a big publisher: how to choose a name for your press, how to get an ISBN, what cover designs cost, how to find a reliable printer, how to price your book, where to find lighter-weight shipping envelopes, how to generate working capital. The authors' encyclopedic grasp of the ins and outs of self-publishing is matched by their natural good sense about self-promotion. Turn your signings into events, they recommend; get your books into a variety of venues; use the books as fundraisers for organizations; get online and get reviewed online. The price of this book is negligible considering the cost of proper self-publishing (between $12,000 and $25,000), and, oh, the headaches it will spare you! --Jane Steinberg

                  I liked this book to most degrees. It has a somewhat dated feel to it, but it contains a decent amount of information that a brand new self-publisher or author needs to get the job done. My only qualm with this book is that it seems to be too much of a motivational speech--but that is a minor irritant that I'm sure some readers really enjoy. I like examples of what worked for someone--not what might work. Examples are the key, specific examples, and this book could have used more of them. I really prefer Morris Rosenthal's book about self-publishing--he gives a year in the life of a book (from beginning to finish in the publishing life). BUT, I think this book helped me, too, so I recommend it. 4 stars!

                  From the time I began the process to self-publish my book, The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing was in near-reach to me. This book goes over the many details needed to publish a book and opened my eyes to the very important and various aspects of marketing for both before and after the book is printed. I first read the book front to back taking notes and marking which pages I knew I would need to return to for different stages in the process. From the book's Self-Publishing Timetable, I formed and kept my own very long `What to do' list, and over the months, it felt good to be able to check off the items. I have been recommending this book to people I know who are also considering the self-publishing direction. The encouragement from Tom and Marilyn Ross to do it and do it successfully guided me to getting my math book into print last year.

                  I would like to have seen more information on audio book publications and more leads on audio publishers.
                  I purchased several books on this topic. The information is helful but I find out that there is a lot more to learn the more I read. You may want to explore what other useful information you may find online.

                  2 out of 5 stars Contains a mixture of solid information and heavy hype.......2007-03-23

                  Although there is quite a bit of good information in this book, it is also heavily, heavily padded out with hype, hyperbole, and rah-rah-sis-boom-ba pollyanna-ism. If you buy the book, first turn to page 43 and read the section on subsidy publishers, but as you read it, mentally replace each instance of "subsidy publisher" with "self-publisher" and you will get a remarkably accurate summary of the daunting challenges facing anyone who tries to publish their own work themselves in any fashion.

                  The fact is that many of those same caveats apply to publishing through a trade publisher as well.

                  Which brings me to the gist of my objection to this book. It is simply not a realistic presentation of the likelihood of success. Whether you subsidy publish, self-publish, found your own small press or work through an established trade publisher, you will find that the odds are very heavily stacked against you. All the rah-rah-sis-boom-ba in the world will not change that fact.

                  So read the book, note all the useful things that do appear here and there, and then go read some more books until you find yourself armed with a genuine, realistic, and sober assessment of what you're getting into in a field where only the very best and the very luckiest ever make it.

                    Book Description

                    The Romany people—popularly known as gypsies—are widely believed to be the world's greatest soothsayers and fortune tellers. This book-and-card set unveils gypsy secrets to help users foretell their destiny. The author describes several different ways of card-reading, all derived from Romany lore, ranging from a simple one-card reading to an intricate 36-card method of divining the future. This package contains a specially designed set of 36 cards plus a book that instructs on use of the card deck. Readers explore the symbolism contained in each card's picture and learn how to lay out cards to read fortunes. Among the 36 symbols are: The sun, designating happiness and good luck . . . Flowers: designating gifts from nature . . . The Sword, designating life's challenges . . . The Snake, designating temptation . . . and The Cupid, designating greed and lust. Inspired by Romany wisdom set down in the book, and using its 36 beautiful, nature-inspired cards, readers can gain insights and advice formerly possessed only by Gypsy seers.

                    "Gypsy Fortunes is an introduction to tarot reading using 36 gypsy fortune-telling cards instead of the traditional 78-card deck...The cards have simple and beautiful designs and each one is a powerful talisman of knowledge, and a key to wisdom." - From the companion book

                    According to author Lady Lorelei, the design of old gypsy catomancy decks can be traced to Marie Anne Le Normand, who famously predicted life events for Josephine Beauharnais. Young Josephine was a widow, but Le Normand foretold that she would marry a soldier who would later crown her Empress. Le Normand not only accurately predicted the marriage of Josephine and Napoleon, but also read the Emperor's palm--and his near future--with deft precision.

                    In 1940, Whitman publishers produced a 36-card deck called the Old Gypsy Fortune-Telling Cards, which were very similar to the images from Le Normand's deck. The Gypsy Fortunes deck simplifies the imagery with updated art, but the general motifs remain the same.

                    Like the Wisdom Well archetype set by the same publisher (Barron's Educational Series, Inc.), Gypsy Fortunes features a unique hardback slipcase. The set contains a glossy, full-color book of 96-pages glued to one side of the sturdy flap, while the boxed 36-card deck is nestled in a recess. A yellow ribbon anchored underneath the box of cards allows for easy extraction.

                    Lady Lorelei provides general background on the gypsies, including the unfortunate history of discrimination against them, as well as the cards themselves. She also outlines how to prepare for a reading and offers both sample readings and spreads.

                    Each card gets a thorough treatment in the Gypsy Fortunes set: a large, full-color reproduction of the card, detailed symbolism, upright and reversed meanings, and keywords. Lady Lorelei also connects each card with a Tarot card/s or suit and includes a sage Gypsy saying connected to theme. For example, for Card 23 The Mice--a card warning of theft of either material or immaterial items--the Gypsy Wisdom is "A thief believes that everybody steals."

                    Some of the intriguing cards from the Gypsy Fortunes deck include:

                    * The Sun
                    * The House
                    * The Sick Person
                    * The Scythe
                    * The Children
                    * The Letter
                    * The Cats
                    * The Broken Mirror
                    * The Heart
                    * The Train
                    * The Safe

                    Some cards in this deck bear direct correlations with the Tarot, such as The Lightning card with The Tower and The Cupid with The Lovers. Others, such as The Pig's connection with The World card or The Clouds with the 7 of Cups, are more oblique.

                    When I saw the Gypsy Fortunes in the store, I was immediately captivated. The everyday images seemed enigmatic and inviting. What could a flaming hearth mean? What about a train headed in the viewer's direction? The woman on The Letter--why has the envelope fallen to the floor...and what might the letter reveal?

                    Certainly, such familiar images beg for interpretation--especially without a context. As such, the Gypsy Fortunes would be an excellent set of cards for contemplative journaling, solution generation, creative writing and oracular insights.

                    Several personal readings proved eerily accurate and synchronistic, while a few seemed not to apply to anything in my life at the time--so the deck seems hit or miss for me. Granted, I didn't keep track of the reading to see if perhaps they would make sense in hindsight...

                    If you're looking for an unusual but accessible oracle--especially one that can be used in conjunction with a regular Tarot deck--the Gypsy Fortunes would serve admirably. The presentation is lovely, the construction sturdy, and the ways to use the deck virtually inexhaustible.

                    I love these cards! They're small in size as well as in number and easy to shuffle. They're simple to learn, and yet they can give readings that are as complex and deep as you need. The accompanying booklet is well-written and clear, giving a great deal of meaning in a small amount of text; the card illustrations are straightforward and vivid. Buy these, especially if you find Tarot decks cumbersome and a bit intimidating.

                    I needed an easy, quick way to become a fortune teller for our High School After Prom Party. This book was great and did the job. After using this for 3 years I am quite an accomplished (rookie) fortune teller. The kids loved it and you can be quite entertaining. What is amazing is how they relate their fotune to what is happening NOW in their lives. This set made learning to "read the cards" really easy and fun. A must for beginners.

                    Lady Lorelei of the Tarot Goddess Network, here. It's a wonderful little 36 card deck with all the innocence and charm of the original from 1940. The book covers an interpretation of each card, association to the tarot, the Challenge of each card, and some basic 1, 2, and 3 card readings. Not much magick and the 36 card spread was too big to be included. Enjoy!

                      The part I liked was when the girl had a dream that could make anyone invisible. She got scared when she thought her brother went invisible.Then she begged for him to come back.He was really hiding on the wall. His sister was glad but she still wanted to make him invisible.
