The FEL field has grown enormously over the last years, which is reflected in the number of papers presented at the 1998 conference. A few specific areas in FEL are particularly active. Several groups are investigating self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) as a route to 0.1 nm FEL. Although the technical challenges are large, a growing portion of the community believes this is a feasible goal and have begun planning 4th generation light sources based on this technique. Already, demonstrations of SASE by many orders of magnitude in an unguided (by external means) optical mode have been achieved in the IR with extension into the UV soon to follow. Other groups are extending the applications of FELs by evolutionary changes in the capabilities of user facilities around the world. Many of these utilize other sources of radiation synchronously with tunable FEL beams. An emerging trend is th use of Thompson scattered photons from the electron beam. Because of the Doppler shift involved, the photons can be up-scattered into the X-ray (keV) or even gamma ray (MeV) regime forming a useful picosecond probe for analysis of materials or nuclear structure. Other groups continue to extend the range of FEL operation and a new record was set this year for short wavelength lasing (210nm) as well as production of the highest CW average power yet for a FEL (311 W).

Interesting book.......2002-01-07

The falling season is a tough book to review, since I am involved in SAR work, not in Colorado though. First off the author is an excellent writer and keeps the book moving along. He gets into the personalities of the team members and when you do SAR work you realize that it is the interrelationships of the team personal that make or breaks your team. I think Mr. Clifford does a good job in detailing the day to day nuances of the characters in the book.

I also think that he portrays a realistic look at the tensions that arise between the NEEDED paramilitary Sheriffs department and the free-spirited rescuers. The facts are that the SAR Teams are going to become more and more under the direct aegis of the Sheriff departments. That means more liability issues will be raised and in turn more Certifications will be needed to be a member of any SAR team. While this may be a noble objective it also had the direct dilemma of ostracizing the competent members on any SAR team. I have seen it happen, so sometimes the net result is a SAR team will lose some competent people only to be replaced by individuals that have passed the minimum sheriffs department certifications. While technically these individuals are qualified to perform a rescue they are as inept as any mountain neophyte is and in most cases a liability to the team. But this is the wave of the future and a reason why the author sees SAR teams being staffed only by paid people.

One caveat for the any Non SAR person. This book does glamorize the work and makes it seem as non-stop action. I understand that the book has to do this otherwise it would be a bore to read. But real SAR work can be tedious and hard, no limelight, many days spent traipsing through buckthorn or on the side of some rattlesnake-infested ridge. You will come home on many days, dirty and tired, with fresh scrapes on your hands and faces oozing blood, just wondering just why you were assigned to search that area? But in the end it's always worth it.

The Soap Opera.......2001-08-03

This book starts with a great, well painted rescue. Most of the remainder of the book then focuses on the egos and personal conflicts of the team and sheriff. "He said this and she said that and I said this." As a member of a busy SAR team, I was amazed at (and saddened by) how poorly the team and Sheriff got along. I also question the pseudo-conclusion that rescue teams will become paid services.

If you are looking for insight into the personal relationships the make up a rescue community, you will like this book.

Good read, but a few inaccuracies.......2001-07-06

I read this book when it first came out. As someone who's familiar with Aspen's team, and who's been involved in mountain search and rescue in Colorado for many years, I found Hal's book to paint a pretty good picture of what it's like to be involved in mountain rescue work.

However, like a previous reviewer, I feel it's rather arrogant. Hal pumps-up Aspen's team while putting down other agencies, and I feel there are some questionable comments in the book related to this. There are many fine EMS agencies and rescue teams in Colorado (..and elsewhere) of the same caliber as Aspen's team. This book should have been more humble in that regard.

Otherwise, I recommend it for anyone interested in this topic.

An excellent account of the operation of SAR.......2000-07-16

Tha Falling Season gives readers an inside look at the operations of one of America's best rescue teams, Aspen Mountain Rescue. This fast paced book also lets us inside the personal lives of several key team members and shows us the triumphs and conflict that inevitably exist in such groups. Truly an excellent book for anyone interested in search and rescue and outdoor sports or mountaineering.

in Search and Rescue and this could have been any SAR team, any County, USA. The general press gets us wrong every time but Hal got it right. Thank you for a sometimes tearful, often funny and believable read of one of the many sides of a multi-faceted SAR team. PS: the past pres. should get over it!

Simple to understand, no stories, no adds, no bull. This little book just instructs you on how to put the bullet in the center hole. The book explains how you should hold the pistol, how to set up your stance, how to aim, how to breath, how to squeese the trigger, and much more. Short and to the point.

A worthwhile book especially for beginning shooters. His books would benefit greatly by including photos and diagrams that demonstrate what he is trying to describe in text. Mr. Stephens tends to repeat himself and spend too much time dwelling on the obvious. The biggest tips I gleaned were to work on avoiding "chicken finger" and fixating on targets too long. His tips and diagnostics for dry fire practise are worth the book's low price.

This book was not much help. My instructors already told me everything that was presented in this book. I had thought that there was some `SECRET' to being a great shot or MASTER HANDGUNNER and there is ... practice, practice, practice the CORRECT things...
I could have saved my money on this one and bought more ammo at the range! This could have been a pamphlet handed out at the range summarisng all the basics steps that your instructor SHOULD be telling you.

Just as it promises, this is a fine book to get condensed knowledge on just about anything. It also stimulates you to research further on the subjects that intrigue you. Hmmm, I might have to pass this on to my teenage son and see if it stimulates his curiousity beyond video games...

I read this entire book and it became a chore after a while. Another reviewer wrote "Fluffy and Bland" when describing this book. I think that is an apt description. The book reads like those "Factoids" in USA Today. I don't feel like I learned a whole lot by reading it.

I had a hard time getting through this book because, although it was entertaining enough I guess, it was mostly stuff that I had known at one time and forgotten rather than containing much that was new and fascinating. I was really hoping for some uncommon and entertaining tidbits to add to my collection of useless trivia, but was fairly disappointed.

When I picked it up, I was very skeptical. In this internet age I could simply search and browse for anything I can think of, or simply go to Wikipedia, if not a volume of Britannica. Luckily enough, the Campbell Soup like front cover gave me the final purchase push.

IMHO, it's not easy to edit a good book of this encyclopedia genre. Too long you will easily get bored. Too short you will deem it shallow and useless. Thanks to the editors, this 323 content page book of 15 topics delivers exactly the right stuff. It's concise, informative, interesting and definitely a page turner, a valuable attribute not commonly found in a non fiction type of book. Reviewer "Christina Lockstein" simply described it as the "Perfect Bathroom Book", a praise that I can agree no more. In short, highly recommended!
