      Book Description

We live in a world of global food. The daily meals of people in both the developed and developing worlds are being transformed by the increasing ease with which food is being traded across continents. Affluent consumers' supermarket trolleys increasingly are being filled with an array of food products from developing countries while, at the same time, food exports from the developed world are supplanting and transforming dietary systems in developing countries. Some experts suggest that the enhanced tradability of food ushers in an era of increasing choice and affluence. Others point to problems of dependency, inequality and social dislocation accompanying these developments.

Cross-continental Food Systems represents a collective effort to document and understand these issues. Containing the contributions of twenty-six leading international social scientists from eleven countries, the book presents recent case study research on how and why the food system is being globalized, and what this means for people and communities in different parts of the world. The book covers debates on new structures and food products, as well as detailed accounts of fresh horticulture, tropical crops and livestock.

This book fills a major gap in contemporary scholarship on food and globalization. Its emphasis on case study accounts of the connections between trade and restructuring provides texture and context to these complex and important debates. Written and researched at a time in which national governments are seeking to negotiate new rules of global agricultural trade, this book is timely and relevant. It will interest researchers in geography, development studies, agricultural economics and political science, as well as professionals in the fields of trade and food policy.

4 out of 5 stars A detailed system useful against all defenses.......2006-05-31

As football book fans we are truly blessed to have a prolific author like Coach Leo Hand writing such great books for us on what seems like a monthly basis. Most new readers will be familiar with Hand's prolific work in the 101 series for the publisher Coach's Choice, but they may not remember his older books that he did with Parker Publishing.

While Coach Hand is typically not indepth in the 101 series (and obviously the format sometimes limits his ability there) here he is once again delightfully detailed.

I found so many great ideas (some old, some new) to attack the 3-3-5 defense which is all the rage in college and high school football these days. While Hand focuses on the I formation, this isn't your typical pro-set I formation with two wrs and a te, indeed Hand shows us other formations that keep the I formation concepts in tact while allowing the offense to give an appearance of diversity.

Hand presents concepts that are not only helpful in attacking a specific defense but that can also be used when facing other defenses. While you might not run an I formation or face the 3-3-5, I'm sure you can gain something from reading this book.

Thank you Coach Hand for all you've done for football and thank you for continuing to share your knowledge!

Just a note I'm pretty critical of football books so a 5 star is reserved for those books that I find are A+++ Perfection material, Coach Hand's work here deserves a 4.9. I highly encourage readers to check out not only this book and the 101 series he's done but his earlier work as well.

This is one of those books I use over and over again with my K-3 reading groups. The kids love the activities and I am happy with what they are learning. To be good readers, children need to be able to hear the sounds that make words, change sounds in words to make new words, and see the relationship between sounds. This book supplies you with over 60 exciting lessons for just that. The lessons are easy to do and many you can do without any materials. The book does supply you with the needed reproducible manipulatives, picture cards, and word lists

One of my favorite and easy activities in the book is called Rhyme Away. You draw the given picture on the board and erase parts of the picture as you read clues to the class. The students have to finish a rhyme phrase and then erase that picture on the board. That is a Level 1 activity in the book. The activities range in Levels from 1 to 5. There are activities for rhyming, blending, syllable counting, sound matching, phoneme isolation, phoneme counting, phoneme substitution, phoneme deletion, and more!

This book gets my full approval and I am so happy to have found it.

Legal decision makers construct their own case story version when judging a case. In fact, they reauthor their own version of the case story presented to them several times before arriving at the one they use to decide the case. Their individual stories influence the verdict as much as individual backgrounds and beliefs, or the attorney’s case presentation in court. This groundbreaking book offers straightforward steps for trial professionals to identify and use these stories to refine the most compelling presentation for listeners to judge. 5 out of 5 stars Great insight on the "How" the mind gathers.......2007-06-30

Oliver's book is a must for anyone advocating any position. I've often heard the mind doesn't know the difference between what you tell it and what one would call reality. Oliver's book explains the workings of the mind in how that impacts one's approach to being effective in a presentation. The story concept falls well into the arena of classical rhetorical research.

                    5 out of 5 stars Dean Nasser.......2006-08-14

This book shows that common sense still exists at deeper levels of thought and at deeper levels of analysis of human behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Breaks New Ground.......2006-03-24

Much like great athletes such as Wayne Gretzky, who was capable of seeing his game in slow motion while it seemed to speed by his opponents, Eric Oliver sees advocacy and persuasion in a different dimension than the rest of us.

This book is a logical culmination of groundbreaking work that Eric has done over the past decade-plus. His focus on stories--not the ones we develop in our case, but the ones the jurors develop in their heads--does more to shed light on decision-making psychology than anyone in our field ever has.

It takes a while to get through it, but once you've read this book, you'll never look at your cases in the same light again; the light in which you view them will be brighter and clearer.

Fans of Brock Cole's savvy, independent protagonist in Celine may be shocked by the raw young woman they meet in The Facts Speak for Themselves. The novel challenges our ideas about young-adult books and about young adults themselves: its story is gritty; its rhythm is oddly primitive; its level of honesty about people and events is unparalleled. Cole tells the tale of 13-year-old Linda who, when we meet her in the beginning of the book, has just come to the police station after witnessing the murder of a man--an adult who may be her lover. The situation is extreme; the nuances are deep. Linda struggles madly against everyone's presumptions about who she appears to be. She tries to tell the story straight, to let the facts speak for themselves. This important book will stimulate discussions in classrooms and between friends.

                    3 out of 5 stars A Child's Tale of Abuse.......2007-07-05

Linda is thirteen when her mother's ex-boyfriend approaches Linda's lover, who is also her mother's boss, and shoots him. Soon after, her mother's ex-boyfriend also shoots himself, leaving Linda as the only person who could really say what happened.

Because of her age and the complexity of the situation, including the fact that her mother isn't fit to take care of her, Linda ends up in a group home while everyone tries to sort things out. She meets with police officers and psychologists who put together reports on her. One day while the psychologist is out of the room, she reads the report and is offended by the way it makes her sound. She decides to write her own report of her life.

Linda's life was never easy. Her mother and father split up when she was a small child because her mother was having an affair. Shortly after that, her father died. The guy with whom her mother was having the affair was young--a college student, whose parents wouldn't let him marry her.

Things go downhill, through Linda's mother's depression and a brief stay with Linda's grandparents, then through a new husband who eventually loses his mind. Finally Linda's family ends up in Florida with her mother's new boyfriend.

Linda likes her mother's new boyfriend, and she likes the place they are living. One day while she is playing in the yard, a man stops his car to talk to her. Soon Linda and this man become lovers, and he gives her mother a job in his real estate company. Linda feels happy and secure, although her mother's relationship is going steadily downhill. But when Linda's lover's wife finds out about their affair, things go badly quickly.

I liked that this book was told entirely from Linda's point of view. It was less horrifying hearing her words directly from her, although it was still an extraordinary tale of child neglect and abuse. It was sad to read about a child who fell through the cracks so many times. There were several different times when someone should have picked up on her bad situation, but she always ended up being overlooked.

4 out of 5 stars The facts speak for themselmselves.......2007-03-08

This book had a nice flow, I finished it in about two days. Very interesting, but a little too explicit for innocent teenagers. Its a sad story, the way this young girl is unwanted by any female in her family. She is a pretty tough chic though, always finding a way to survive.

3 out of 5 stars good, not great.......2004-05-13

For me, this book follows the title to the letter. It is told through the eyes of Linda, a sexually active 13 year old of low to average intelligence. She has been forced to grow up at an astounding rate due to the indifference of her mother, raising her brothers and taking care of one of her step fathers after he has a stoke. She is unaware that any of the molesting and emotional damage to her is abuse.

I grew fond of her as the story unfolded but I never loved her. I don't think she quite had the charisma I wanted although I think she certainly had the potential

It might have been because of the way the story was written. It seemed completely stripped of emotion, as the title suggests. But I think this would make it much easier for people to read who haven't come across the subjects before. For example, when she is raped there is very little description other than, "When he was inside me I didn't like it. I hit him. I said hurry up."

I did enjoy this book but I think it seemed a bit mugged in places. It also doesn't use speech marks, which I found extremely annoying and confusing to read. I couldn't say what age range this book should be for. Perhaps 13 +. Some of the things in it might disturb some people but I honestly think it is told in such away that people won't feel nearly as horrified than of something which is told in detail and with emotion.

5 out of 5 stars painfully real bibliotherapy.......2003-04-01

: This book is extremely well written and affecting. Since this book contains a realistic portrayal of sexual and emotional abuse, The Facts Speak For Themselves would be an excellent choice for bibliotherapy. I would recommend that a teenager have someone trusted to talk over the subject matter of this book. In fact, this book could be so upsetting that a person who reads this book might need a professional counselor.

Evaluation: The Facts Speak For Themselves by Brock Cole contains a sad and powerful story. Cole writes in a beautiful and simple style that gives us access to Lindaýs inner thoughts. The protagonist in this book, Linda, is a victim of years of psychological, sexual and emotional abuse. This abuse is so normal for Linda that she does not recognize it as abuse. As she describes her situation Linda writes in a flat tone about taking care of her little brothers, being molested and watching the murder of her adult lover. It is heartbreaking to see adult after adult either abuse Linda or not offer her any help. Although this is a sad book, in the end Linda is removed from her situation and in a group home. Linda seems relatively happy in the home and she is grateful for the small things like having access to pencils. This ending puts a happy ending on the book that otherwise could make a reader lose all hope.

4 out of 5 stars the facts speak for themselves.......2002-10-25

This is a very good story told entirely from linda's point of veiw. With no father and an irrisponsible mother linda is left to take care of herself and the people who are forced on her by family. There is no one to fill in the gaps for the readers of what Linda doesn't understand which makes the book more realistic. It still gives you a very good idead of what is going on in Linda's life even though she doesn't tell you everything. This is a very good book although it does leave some things unresolved at the end of the book.

If I could mandate required reading for all American children ALL George Seldes books would be on the list; this one in particular. I would like to send a copy of this book to all Home Schooled children and tell their parents that unless the child read and studied these books they would not be passed to the next grade, or graduate. George Seldes is the only truly Honest writer of the 20th century. As an American I can state honestly, he is the only American Author that makes me proud to be an American.

                    5 out of 5 stars Out-of-print, but not forgotten.......1999-05-14

If there were an award given for journalistic endurance during the 20th century, and if it were given fairly, George Seldes would be the runaway winner. "Even the Gods Can't Change History" is one of a long line of books Seldes wrote on the stories he covered between 1909 and the late 1930s. It adds his commentary on more recent developments, including the Watergate scandal and media coverage of it, and journalism's sacred cows of the late 20th century. Seldes, writing while in his eighties (he died in 1995 at age 104), describes the hidden stories of the end of World War I and the U.S. role in deciding the outcome, the origins of the Cold War as French Marshal Ferdinand Foch began a campaign of public statements on containing Bolshevism, and accounts on post-war Russia, Italy, Ireland, the Arab world and Spain. The ongoing theme of George Seldes's writings is that of the failure of U.S. media to tell the story truthfully. For the facts to speak for themselves, they need to reach the people. Seldes's probe into truth in journalism is as vital today as it was when published in 1976. Though this book is out of print (sadly, my local public library had withdrawn it as well), with a bit of perseverence the interested reader can get much of Seldes's take on the same events in some of his other books. If you can't find "Even the Gods Can't Change History," try "Witness to a Century," another Seldes volume that covers the historic events in his impeccable reporting career.

From the supplier: Tort reform legislation that would put a cap on punitive damages in civil lawsuits is making progress at the federal and state levels, and trial lawyers are counterattacking. Trail lawyers claim that extant tort laws have no deleterious economic effects and that tort reform would restrict the rights of injured citizens. The truth is there is a tort crisis as tort reform litigation costs have increased 7.3% annually since 1986. The rate of increase is double the rate of inflation and would have been higher but for the tort reforms enacted by states since 1986.
