"Butch Cassidy and the Bank Rec Kid".......2002-02-15
Sticky recently did a fair bit of research on this book for a good friend of his. The multiple exercises in this wonderful book (when combined with a strict diet regime of sticky rice, sticky rice, and more sticky rice) are sure to restore the spark to even the dullest of minds and rekindle a love for that most noble of processes; the bank reconciliation.
Book Description
Profiles of more than fifty establishments that have supplied goods and services to royalty–and the merely discriminating–for more than one hundred years
"A gentleman," Winston Churchill once observed, "buys his hats at Locks, his shoes at Lobbs, his shirts at Harvie and Hudson, his suits at Huntsman and his cheese at Paxton and Whitfield."
Luckily for the gentlemen–and gentlewomen–among us, all of these shops and dozens more are still in business, providing the traditional British goods and food that they've been supplying Londoners for a century or more. More than thirty venerable stores, along with another twenty or so eateries, are profiled in The Historic Shops and Restaurants of London.
"The most beautiful shop in the world . . ." is how Esquire magazine describes John Lobb, Bootmaker's opulent premises in Mayfair. Less grand, but no less quaint, is Paxton and Whitfield, now on Jermyn Street, which dates to 1742 when cheese monger Stephen Cullum sets up his stall in Clare Market. (Now the shop sells the most prized artisanal cheeses in Great Britain.) Have a drink at the long, narrow little Grapes Pub. Built in 1720, on the site of a previous pub, the Grapes was a working class tavern that Charles Dickens knew well. As a child, he was made to stand on a table and sing to the customers. As an adult, he immortalized it as the Six Jolly Fellowship Porters pub in Our Mutual Friend. These are only a few of the many of the establishments described that are holders of the Royal Warrant, dating back to the 15th century and still granted today to recognize excellence and quality.
Bespoke shirt-makers, hatters, haberdashers, perfumers, bookstores, chemists, an umbrella maker, and chocolatiers are only a few of the small specialist shops included, most of which are located in the most quaint and beautiful settings in London.
Also included are traditional restaurants and bars, ranging from picturesque pubs and "caffes" to fish'n'chips stands and eel-and-pie shops.

Book Description
This new second edition of 'Managing People' provides a practical approach to applying up-to-the-minute management techniques, and is a vital source of information for professionals in the hotel and catering industry responsible for personnel and training.
Riley explores how aspects such as labour cost, utilization, labour market behaviour and pay are inseparable from the skills of people management. In the new edition he extends his ideas on productivity so as to encompass its relationship with functional flexibility. In a similar manner, thinking about motivating people is extended to include modern ideas about commitment. We all loosely refer to peoples' attitude but here he shows the complexity that lies behind them. It is especially of relevance for managers with responsibility for personnel and training, and degree-level students will also find its non-prescriptive, user-friendly approach helpful.
Michael Riley has extensive experience in the hotel and tourism industry and communicates in a way that reflects that experience.
Fully updated with three brand new chapters
Practical, user-friendly approach from a key author in the field
Ideal for both managers and students

Great Book.......2003-06-09
Interesting way of looking at things can give fresh ideas and thin book was a great read.
The perfect Book for the Busy Manager.......2002-12-31
Almost every book I've read about the hospitality industry (or "management" books in general) are boring. This dude has some style and flair. Just read "MYOB" on vacation in November 2002, and was impressed with the detail and the ideas Sullivan shares in the book. This guy is obviously in the biz. He covers marketing, service, selling, team, etc and while some of it is too basic for me, it served as a reminder for my younger managers. Best part is whether the idea was new or old you can use it right away. There's a lot of graphics and the layout pretty cool. It'll be a key tool for keeping a temperamnetal restaurant team together. I wish there's been more on Team Meetings and E-learning, but he refers you to his website for that information and it's free there, so that's worked out well. I've been running chain restaurants for 12 years and this is the best book on the basics of managing hospitality; that I've seen, anyway. I gave my 3 other managers copies for Christmas. The price is great for the amount of info you get in return. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on it.
Prepare your Service Business for the 2000's.......2000-02-29
MYOB: The heart and Soul of Hospitality is Jim Sullivan's new book, addressing the keys to Restaurant Customer Service-- from an experienced pro. Jim's humorous approach to a subject dear to any restaurateur or service person's heart is an easy read.
Heavy on specific examples and tips of ways you can change your service to improve service, sales, and profitability, MYOB is a primer for doing a service business right in the competitive 2000's. As numbers of eateries increase in the US and abroad, the key differentiation will be service received and Customers' value perception.
Sullivan combines a variety of methods that will energize salespeople in your operation.
I've recommended this book to people in other Service businesses, too, since it is so insightful into the service delivery. My friends in grocery, hotel management, retail sales, etc. have all purchased the book and gleaned successful selling/service tips from it.
If you're in a service business, this could be a MUST READ this year!
Mind Your Own Business: The Heart and Soul of Hospitality:.......2000-02-25
HOSPITALITY MUST READ! MYOB is written from the front-line operator perspective with Jim's passionate voice calling to that person inside. The person inside is the one that started in the Hospitality business and remembers how fun the "rush" is and all the special ingredients that led to choice of this industry.
Mind Your Own Business.......1999-11-24
I recently visited with Jim during one of his dynamic seminars at the Toronto, HOST EX - Restaurant Expo. I immediately ordered his book via Amazon.com and I just finished reading it! I couldn't put it down - I read it again - cover to cover! What a joy. Today - I am purchasing 8 copies for my Interns at Penn State. Jim - thanks for the continuous inspiration!

Beginners book to what you can find in the night sky.......1998-10-20
This chatty book is a great introduction to what you can see from your backyard at night. The author doesn't go into much detail as he discusses each object (the planets and a few of the more prominent deep-sky galaxies and nebulas.) There are a few sidebars that give interesting historical trivia. A great book to interest someone in astronomy or an arm-chair astronomer, but not a good book to use while actually looking at the stars. The b&w photos is the book are a waste of ink given that they are so dark. And, the star chart included is really nothing more than a constellation chart. Few stars are included and no deep sky objects. A nice chart for the wall, but not a good reference.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginner dog owners.......2003-03-26
This book is well indexed, as it may be easily read from cover to cover, or it may also be used strictly by section, allowing for quick and easy reference.
While the beginning portion gives great detailed physical description as well as AKA standards, I have found the vast majority of the book to provide very general information that can apply to just about any dog. While I have adopted an adult, most of the book talks to the prospective puppy owner/trainer. Thererfore, I do not feel that it addresses breed-specific problems that may exist in adult dogs adopted from unknown previous owners.
Book Description
Canoeists are increasingly discovering the deep satisfaction in creating their own equipment rather than adapting to the generic standards of boats and paddles available through retailers. Indeed, interest in making paddles and canoes is at an all-time high with recreational boaters. For the how-to beginner, a paddle represents the perfect challenge, both finite and functional. For the skilled woodworker, the opportunity to experiment with design and technique and thereby create a tailor-made product that perfectly suits a paddler's needs is a dream come true.
In
Canoe Paddles: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own, longtime canoeist and woodworker Graham Warren presents detailed blueprints for making paddles that you will cherish and use with confidence. From his insightful look at the way a paddle works when it meets the water through the selection of the best woods, adhesives and tools, Warren takes the reader on a veritable paddlemaking odyssey. You will learn how to make a paddle with a single blade, a bent shaft or double blades; how best to protect a paddle with oil or varnish; what to look for when test-driving your paddle; how to decorate it; and how to care for and repair it. Warren also includes an appreciation of the evolution of the paddle, and a special chapter by renowned canoe-building teacher David Gidmark celebrates paddlemaking in the native tradition.
Canoe Paddles is thoroughly illustrated with photographs and drawings.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-10-16
The book does exactly what it says, tells you about the history of different paddles, tells you how to make simple paddles, then tells you how to make complex paddles, and finally tells you how to traditionally make paddles. Ity really hits the spot for me as someone who likes making stuff, but am not quite ready to make my own canoe yet! I loved this book and am going to give it to my oldman.
A very usable guide.......2005-11-17
I actually made a canoe paddle, and plan on making some more. My new paddle served me admirably on an extended trip. This is as complete a treatment of the subject as one could hope to find. Making a paddle is a reasonably complex process but the authors explain every step with well-illustrated clarity.
Up the creek without a paddle?, Get this book.......2005-07-20
A fine, clearly written book on paddle making. The author covers wood, tools, paddle types and includes plans for a number of differnt models including a child's paddle. Most require the use of some power tools but if you're stuck in the woods, paddleless with only an axe and a crooked knife you can construct a paddle. No crooked knife in your kit, you say. Instructions for making one are included, although you might need the help of a blacksmith buddy.
Great Book for making Canoe paddles.......2005-05-05
Great Book for making Canoe paddles also on making anything out of wood. I found the easy to read and how much depth it had. You could take a brief look at this book and come
out with enough information to make a good paddle.
Great Book!.......2001-12-02
This is one of the best wood working books of any kind I have read. Lots of detail and many tips. The paddle building skills mixed with the Native American history of the paddle was very interesting. I can't wait for their next advanced book!
Book Description
Writers looking for more than elementary synonyms found in a standard thesaurus will find exceptional and thoughtful alternatives in this advanced thesaurus. Neither weird nor arcane, each listed synonym is carefully chosen, defined by a "clarifier," and used in an example from the popular press that demonstrates its contemporary usage. Words that may not be exact synonyms but anticipate what the reader was really looking for are also included; for example, in the listing for amusing, the word witling is featured, explained by the clarifier as a "person who tries to be amusing but isn't." Aimed at readers who want their writing and speaking to stand out, this thesaurus ensures that a synonym sought is a synonym well thought.
Customer Reviews:
Thinker's Thesaurus.......2007-09-13
When it comes to lexicons I am a true logophile. I know good dictionary when I see one. Words are my hobby. This thesaurus is perhaps the best one that I have discovered. It is much more sophisticated than the average thesaurus. If you want an aid to help you augment your vocabularey this is the one.
Robert Simmons
Not worth it.......2007-07-03
This book present only a narrow range of synonyms, most of them unusable in modern writing.
A thesaurus that really makes you think.......2007-06-04
Being a connoisseur of words and language, I picked up The Thinker's Thesaurus, thinking it would be this month's edition to the coffee table, good for an occasional glance or two. Since cracking it open, it has spent more time in the palm of my hand. After feverishly devouring it the first time around, I found myself starting all over again, like hitting play on the DVD remote again immediately after watching a new favorite movie. Professor Meltzer's entries, while esoteric, never seem altogether unfamiliar; he has an uncanny ability to mine through our often frustratingly byzantine language and emerging with not just one, but several options that are vastly superior to the quotidian rhetoric near all of us use on impulse. This is not a collection of cute words and phrases meant to briefly titillate the suburban party goers at the coffee table in between sips, as so many of these types of books are, but rather a treasure trove of synonymous upgrades that serve as a reminder of how often and easily our communication skills range from mundane mimicry to outright misused.
A note from the author ..........2007-05-05
I felt compelled to respond to a few reviews of my book which seem to suggest that the synonyms used are archaic, or somehow not "real", or that to use them is pretentious.
First, as emphasized in the Introduction to the book, there is not a single synonym used in the book which is archaic or obsolete. Every entry is a completely legitimate and current word. Any word listed in the dictonary as archaic (or not listed at all) was excluded.
Second, I was bemused (and amused) by the reviewer who commented that she couldn't believe that the words are used by journalists "because I haven't found a single word I had heard before yet." The fact is that every single one of the over 10,000 words in the book is accompanied by an actual example of the word in current usage by professional writers from widely read magazines like Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report, widely-read newspapers like USA Today, The New York Times, the Washington Post, as well as various books and novels.
Third, with respect to her comment that the words seemed unfamiliar to her, that is the whole point of the book--to expand your vocabulary. As noted in the Introduction, if you want a thesaurus simply to remind you of words you already know but have momentarily forgotten, this is probably not the thesaurus for you--that's what every other thesaurus is for. This thesaurus is intended to introduce users to new and wonderful, but (I emphasize again) completely legitimate words.
Finally, we all have a tendency to think that the words each of us know and use are "acceptable" words, while we scoff at words we don't know, as if to suggest (like some reviewers have) that the writers of those words have no business using them, because they are somehow elitist or pompous. The problem is that each of us sets ourselves up as the proverbial "reasonable person". But of course, there can be no one reasonable person. Take for example, the "nix" reviewer, who talks about "Latinate polysyllables". Clearly he is comfortable with those words even though they may not be familiar to everyone. No doubt he would look down on those who would prefer that he wrote "Latin words of more than one syllable", or those who would prefer that he used a simpler word than "boorish". In other words, he has subconsciously set himself up as the "reasonable man", just as we all tend to do. However because there can be no one reasonable man, the only solution is to look to the dictionary as the ultimate determiner of words. So long as words are in the dictionary, are not listed as "archaic" and can be found in current usage, there should be no hierarchy of legitimacy among them.
Nix.......2007-04-29
If pretentious writing, substituting Latinate polysyllables for ordinary language, is desired for a reference, this one does about as well as any. The practice of using French in English prose as "intellectually smart" is boorish, but this reference will advance that end. The difference between "sophisticated" and "archaic, obtuse, and foreign" is a difference some of us consider worth keeping.
