Turns a tedious, dirty job into an adventure........2006-02-02

I don't know about you, but when I think about working in a fish shop, all I can think is; I'll never get that smell off my hands. I was in Seattle about 16 years ago and went to Pike Place Market. I don't remember seeing that particular fish market, but the whole market is pretty cool. This is a fantastic book. The thought of the motley crew of guys pictured in the book getting along and having fun is nothing short of amazing. The shop is proof that you can have fun, learn, and make a lot of money doing just about anything, if certain rules are observed. One of the main secrets of their success is the ability to be taught. So many people, especially after working in the same occupation for a number of years, or reaching a certain age feel like they know it all, and are not willing to try anything new. These employees each essentially 'own' a piece of the business. With ownership it's easier to accept responsibility and get a feeling of success and euphoria. This company also holds biweekly meetings, as well as huddles at the start and end of each day. The stories of each employee as portrayed inspired me, even if they were embellished by the author. The author did an exemplary job writing this book, and I would recommend it to anyone working for themselves or for an employer, after all, we are all working for ourselves anyway.

This is one of the most inspiring things I have ever read. The best part was hearing how one of the fishmongers used this 'fish philosophy' in dealing with a brain tumor. His attitude was admirable and all of the guys' stories were so neat. They really seem to live what they speak about. In visiting the market last year I was able to see that they not only have fun, play, make your day, and are 'there' but also have great fish. A Good Read!.......2004-06-03

While author Cyndi Crother acknowledges that another wildly successful business book about this fish market preceded her, she has insights to offer based on time she spent with the free-wheeling, fish-throwing denizens of Seattle's World Famous Pike Place Fish. Her book picks up on the spirit of past coverage, but she adds the fishmongers' philosophical ruminations to her own slightly mushy, eclectic New Age managerial wisdom. This is not for strictly business readers, but it will ring a chord with those who seek to balance life and work. It's about warmth, and treating people with sensitivity, and creating your own reality by aligning your thoughts and actions with your intentions. It is also about workplace comradeship, customer service and how to sell the heck out of fish all day long. It's all pretty entertaining, given the lively background of the fish market. We suggest you throw a line in the water; you might just hook something you can really use

Most inspiriational book I have read lately!.......2004-03-06

If this book does not inspire you to come alive and get going with your life, nothing will. And it is not some philosoper's old boring stuff; it is real life from ordinary fish mongers. It is down-to-earth information that is easily read, easily undetstood, and easy to apply to your own life. I plan to reread this little book several times a year to remind me what any person can easily do to become "great."

The whole idea of the Pike Place Fish Market is inspirational. If you have ever been to the market in Seattle, you will be quite inspired and maybe even a happier person right away because if it. The people who work there are inspirational. They are succeeding personally and as part of a team. They are very happy to be working where they are. They have a formula for success that is really working, and working for ordinary people. This is why they sell tons of fish on the Internet. This is why they perform training programs all over the country. This is why they sell so many books and videos and T-shirts.

If you do not check into this source of inspiriation you are losing out. I'm so glad I know about Fish!

Zapotec farmers in the northern sierra of Oaxaca, Mexico, are highly successful in providing their families with abundant, nutritious food in an ecologically sustainable fashion, although the premises that guide their agricultural practices would be considered erroneous by the standards of most agronomists and botanists in the United States and Europe. In this book, Roberto González convincingly argues that in fact Zapotec agricultural and dietary theories and practices constitute a valid local science, which has had a reciprocally beneficial relationship with European and United States farming and food systems since the sixteenth century.

González bases his analysis upon direct participant observation in the farms and fields of a Zapotec village. By using the ethnographic fieldwork approach, he is able to describe and analyze the rich meanings that campesino families attach to their crops, lands, and animals. González also reviews the history of maize, sugarcane, and coffee cultivation in the Zapotec region to show how campesino farmers have intelligently and scientifically adapted their farming practices to local conditions over the course of centuries. By setting his ethnographic study of the Talea de Castro community within a historical world systems perspective, he also skillfully weighs the local impact of national and global currents ranging from Spanish colonialism to the 1910 Mexican Revolution to NAFTA. At the same time, he shows how, at the turn of the twenty-first century, the sustainable practices of "traditional" subsistence agriculture are beginning to replace the failed, unsustainable techniques of modern industrial farming in some parts of the United States and Europe.

Most palynological studies of mangroves have been carried out in the Indo-Pacific region, but few have investigated these ecosystems along the southern Atlantic coast. This paper provides information on the palynology of a mangrove at Itanhaem, state of Sao Paulo, on the southeastern Brazilian coast. This mangrove occurs on microtidal flats adjacent to a fluvial-tidal channel mouth (Itanhaem River), part of an estuarine lagoon system established in the mid-Holocene. Pollen samples were collected from the surface and from bromeliad water in order to define the composition of modern pollen rain in the study area. The results show a strong presence of rain forest taxa in the mangrove pollen spectra, which differ from those obtained from northern Brazilian mangroves, which are characterized by higher percentages of the mangrove taxa Rhizophora and Avicennia. Based on palynological and ^1^4C chronological analysis of a shallow core measuring 135 cm in depth, the Itanhaem mangrove already existed by 1300 years BP and began expanding about 1000 years BP, reaching its present extent sometime after 300 years BP. Its evolution is related to the sedimentary filling of the estuarine-lagoonal depositional system. Two factors may have controlled the development of this mangrove: the relative increase of intertidal areas due to this sedimentary filling and the decrease in wave action and increase in pelitic deposition in the intertidal zone related to the partial closing of the estuarine-lagoonal inlets. These processes were favored by the advance of bayhead deltas and by the development of sand spits as a part of the regression of the Holocene strandplain.

Okay, so this is not one of sweetvalley's most loving, touching, mushing, exciting books. I almost fell asleep. However, if you are bored in the summer, and need a read, try this. Sure it will bore you, but it will give you something to do.
