      Book Description

European Human Resource Management is an introductory text for students of human resource management. The book examines HRM from a cross-cultural perspective in order to determine whether there is one universal model of HRM or many nationally specific models that reflect a variety of cultural and institutional contexts. It is suggested that the answer to the question 'What is HRM?' is dependent upon the national context within which it is asked. What may be termed HRM in one nation may take on a very different form in another nation despite similarity in terminology. Eurpoean Human Resource Management shows how such factors as a nation's culture, industrial relations system, education system and legal system influence the ways in which the employment relationship is structured and conceived in seven European nations:- Denmark- France- Germany- Great Britain- The Netherlands- Spain- SwedenIn addition, European Human Resources Management considers the extent to which notions of HRM in these nations are converging or diverging. It suggests that whilst there is evidence of a trend towards convergence, differences in cultural and institutional contexts between nations continue to have a major impact on the nature of the employment relationship.

          Description:
Over the past several years, scholars have increased their attention to the phenomenon of accountability. These efforts come largely from social psychology, where accountability is viewed as a description of a category of causal factors of behavior in social settings. Indeed, the developments have been substantial, and studies have been fruitful. Undergirding these efforts are various conceptualizations of accountability which have elements in common, although they also have some points of difference and others of unclear connectedness. In an effort to provide a broad framework as a step toward a cogent theory of accountability, Frink and Klimoski [Frink, D. D., & Klimoski, R. J. (1998). Toward a theory of accountability in organizations and human resources management. In G. R. Ferris, (Ed.), Research in personnel and human resources management (Vol. 16, pp. 1-51). Greenwich, CT: JAI Press] advanced a role theory framework describing the accountability phenomenon. As a next step, this special edition of Human Resource Management Review (HRMR) brings together several authors with expertise in varied theoretical domains, and presents their views of how that framework may or may not be useful in examining their topic of expertise. As may be expected, the result is a creative and refreshing series of papers incorporating multiple levels of analysis and covering a spectrum of topics that are both novel for accountability perspectives as well as interesting and important for organizational scholarship and practice. This edition begins with this introduction piece which sets forth a synopsis of the Frink and Klimoski platform and then introduces the papers that comprise this edition.

4 out of 5 stars The republican and agrarian thought of Virginia's Cato.......2005-05-16

~Arator~ is very much a distinctive "series of agricultural essays-political and practical" written by Virginia statesman and planter of the Old Republic which was first published in 1813. John Taylor, also deemed the Sage of Hazelwood, dedicates a considerable portion of this book reflecting upon the socio-economic and political order of an agrarian republic which he sought to defend. In his book Arator, John Taylor speaks to a multitude of subjects and issues. He also offers practical and perhaps dated advice on farming (i.e. manuring, livestock, draining, etc.) as well which though extraneous may be a historical curiosity to some modern readers.

To sketch a brief biography of the man, John Taylor of Caroline, in the words of M.E. Bradford, "became the classic figure of `old republican' theory: the exemplar of an almost Roman virtus, the Virginia Cato, who soldiers, enforces the law, writes in its defense and of the life it secures, and serves the state well when called to office because he has something better to do-because there are lands and people of whose good is a faithful steward." He rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel serving in both the Continental Army and Virginia militia. He adopted the profession of his stepfather, and became an accomplished attorney. He turned his oratory abilities to the task of statesmanship and became a legislator in the Virginia House of Delegates and the United States Senate. He grew restless in the practice of law and politics and eventually retired to his plantation where he farmed. Though, he was not aloof from political concerns and discourse, as he wrote a number of books and political tracts.

John Taylor of Caroline dedicated much of his political life in defense of the Constitution as a strict constructionist and a principled republican. Likewise, he fought against the perceived depredations of the artificial aristocracy of "paper and patronage" that was wrapping itself around the edifice of the federal government like some sly serpent. He assailed the corrupting mercantilist system of patronage and privilege that the centralising nationalists sought to import from England. According to Taylor, if this moneyed oligarchy thoroughly entrenched itself than the inevitable dire results would be consolidation, empire, monopoly, special privilege, jobbery, patronage, legal plunder and theft by taxation. Taylor no doubt had nothing but disdain for Hamilton's scheming to conscript legions of children and women to work factories. He felt strongly that either imperial consolidation or disunion would be the end result, and in any case, it entailed the ruin of the republic. Taylor minced no words in his vehement denunciations of the "paper aristocracy." Taylor saw this mercantilist class committed to plundering the productive agricultural, mechanical and labour interests so as to endow opulence upon the manufacturers, financiers, speculators and stock-jobbers. This scheming oligarchy driven by material avarice was hardly averse to the creation of legal monopolies and the spoliation of the taxpayers so long as they were enriched through bounties, subsidies and interest from government debt. "Monarchies and aristocracies, being founded in the principle of distributing wealth by law, can only subsist by frauds and deceptions to dupe ignorance for its benefit; but in genuine republics, founded on the principle of leaving wealth to be distributed by merit and industry, these treacheries of government are treasons against nations" [p. 94]. Taylor remained a principled republican and resisted the temptation to mount a campaign of counter-plunder for the benefit of the agricultural class. Taylor surmised, "If a scheme could be contrived in favour of agriculture, similar to the protecting duty scheme in favour of manufacturers, it would enslave the farmers... The utmost favour which it is possible for a government to do for us farmers and mechanics is neither to help nor hurt us" [p. 95]. Thus, in his political capacity as a Senator who championed the agricultural and landed interests, he did fall prey to the philosophy of legal plunder, but preferred laissez-faire instead. Though, he recognised the need for a civil framework to protect property while prosecuting the twin depredations of force and fraud. He was eerily prophetic in surmising that the usurpations of this plundering class would ultimately led to civil war: "...it will begat new usurpations of internal power over persons and property, and these will begat dissolution of the union." Taylor committed his pen and oratory skills to confronting such despotism, and wrote a number of treatises, political tracts, and made some poignant filibuster speeches as a legislator.

History tends to vindicate Taylor's concerns in my humble opinion. Taylor though was a nimble Unionist, and saw it necessary to preserve the liberties of the people in their natural communities with the concert of thirteen separate commonwealths tethered together by friendship, mutual consent and the fraternal bonds cultivated during the Revolution. But just as the John Adams-the quintessential Yankee had spoken of States as being "nations," Taylor no less considered Virginia to be his country. One must surely be a Virginian, Marylander or Georgian as they are an American; and this was the understanding of patriotism that our forefathers embraced and espoused. In the early 1800s, John Taylor alongside John Randolph of Roanoke rose to become sectional leaders of the Tertium Quids (i.e. Latin for the Third Thing.) They represented the extreme conservative wing of the Jeffersonian Republicans. The Tertium Quids saw themselves as authentic expositors of classical republicanism, and their principles compelled them to oppose the artificial aristocracy and the compromises of both Jefferson and Madison, et al. within their own ranks. They were especially averse to the machinations of the High Federalists (i.e. the Essex Junto, Fisher Ames, Aaron Burr) who sought to disrupt and fragment the Union.

Taylor, the leader of the pastoral republicans looked to certain classical exemplars like Cato the Censor. Likewise, as an Old Whig he was no doubt influenced by Cato's De Agri Cultura and by Virgil's Georgics. These classical works connect virtue and the proper order of human life with the discipline of the farmer and husbandman. For this reason, Taylor tended to treat agriculture as a species of moral instruction. Moreover, agriculture represented a noble and honorable calling to Taylor. The landed farmer relied on prescriptive wisdom, experience, patience, hard work, and a profound sense of duty and reverence to the divine. Such a way of life cultivated independence which made for good solid citizens, or vir bonus-the plain good man. The Roman republic of hollowed antiquity called upon the independent freeholders-indeed farmers and yeoman-to provide for her defense. This militia consisted of citizen-soldiers which were always deemed preferable to standing armies or hired mercenaries. Taylor deemed the citizen-militia the "rock of our liberty." For Taylor, the classics offered a breadth of historical insight and wisdom, and he saw that the pursuit of empire undone the Romans. Taylor confronted the perils of slavery with surprisingly candid commentary, and like Jefferson, he saw the existence of that peculiar institution as a catalyst for sparking future conflict, and social strife. He was emboldened to admit that the continuity of slavery might very well kindle the judgment of God. "Virtue and vice are naturally and unavoidably coexistent... Perhaps the sight of slavery and its vices may inspire the mind with affection for liberty and its virtue" [p. 124]. The exploitation of slave labour by the landed interest, conversely reflected a subtle hypocrisy on the part of Taylor as he and other agrarians were so quick to condemn the spoliation and organised legal plunder perpetuated by the "paper aristocracy."

All things considered, this is a good window into John Taylor of Caroline's political thought which represents the "Old Country Whigs." His other books such as _Tyranny Unmasked_ and _New Views on the Constitution_ come highly recommended as well. If you're just looking for a cursory look at Taylor's political thought than I recommend that you check out New Views first. Historian W.A. Williams opined that Taylor made "the best case against empire as a way of life."

4 out of 5 stars Politics and farming: Old South Style.......2003-04-18

Arator is a series of essays that link farming and American politcs. Taylor's use of farming as a vehicle to discuss politics predates a similar move made 100 years later by the Nashville Agrarians (see I'll Take My Stand). I agree with other reviewers who state that Arator no longer gives practical advice on farming. But the sections on *why* farming is important should still be read. Students of Haiti/Haitian history should also read Arator. Taylor's discussion of slavery hinges on his perceptions about the Haitian revolution. It should be noted that the essays in Arator were serially published the same year Haitians defeated the French. And Arator was first collected into book form (widely read and went through many printing runs) at approximately the same time Haiti was becoming a united nation. So students of politics, of history, of the South, and of Haiti will find something valuable between the covers.

2 out of 5 stars strictly of interest to the historian.......2000-07-31

John Taylor may be well worth studying, but this book is not the way to do it. I can't imagine why anyone would think of publishing this book again today. It was probably a great series of writings at the time, but it's long since outlived any usefulness, and it's hardly gained any historical intrigue.

          3 out of 5 stars A classic source in American intellectual/political history........1999-07-27

John Taylor of Caroline was the most brilliant political thinker among the Jeffersonian Republicans (including Thomas Jefferson and James Madison). Unlike some of the others (such as Jefferson and Madison), he was a successful farmer whose primary interest was, well, farming. This book is about 40% political theory and about 60% practical (and now outdated) advice on farming. Read it for the thoughts of one of Jefferson's top lieutenants on the likely effects of the new American constitutional and economic order on agriculture, as well as for "Old Republicanism" (of which Taylor was the leading exponent, despite himself). I give it three stars only because the book will be of interest almost solely to historians and those of a historical bent.

                Book Description

Baptism for the early Christians was a subject of crucial importance, and its symbolism fired the imagination of writers throughout the Christian world. Arator, the Roman sub-deacon who wrote a verse-commentary on the Acts of the Apostles in AD 544, was no exception. The Historia Apostolica is a work of historical importance. Written at a time of crisis, politically and theologically, it is of interest as propaganda for a papacy under threat from Constantinople. But Arator's concentration on baptismal themes offers vital evidence of the transmission of exegetical ideas in late antiquity. This book is the first major work on Arator in English and the first ever to study the Historia Apostolica as biblical commentary. Passages of particular baptismal importance are presented both in the original Latin and in a new translation, and considered in the context of the writings of earlier Christian commentators. In short, this is a wide-ranging study of the popularity and potency of baptismal symbolism in the first six centuries AD.

                            Book Description

Latin Epics of the New Testament is about the growth of Christianity, and in particular the challenge of engaging with the Roman intellectual elite and its highly sophisticated Graeco-Roman tradition. In this culture epics like those of Vergil and Lucan were highly valued for their language,
their "heroic" themes, and their Rome-centered ideologies. Roger Green examines each of these epics in detail, showing how the three authors Juvencus, Sedulius, and Arator repackage the New Testament as epic, and try to make a bridge between two very different cultures. He explores the fascinating
questions of how these authors exploit epic themes such as gods, heroes, war, and fate, without playing down the very real theological concerns of their times. All these poets were popular in the Middle Ages and later, and are the pioneers of poetry that leads to Renaissance epic and the famous
                            poems of John Milton.

                              Book Description

This book describes the birth and early development of the International Astronomical Union, the world-wide union of professional astronomers that over the past 75 years played an important role in the development of astronomy. However, much attention is also paid to the Union's successful bridging political controversies and maintaining the ties between astronomers in times of war or heavy political tension. The book therefore is of interest not only to astronomers -- professional as well as amateur -- but also to students of the history of modern science in general. The author (born 1914), who earlier published a study of the history of the European Southern Observatory, is an emeritus professor of astronomy of the Universities of Groningen and Leiden, and has witnessed the development of the Union over the past 55 years, the years 1976--1979 as its President.

and took it for a ride.

Told with read-aloud gusto by master rhymesmith Lisa Wheeler and illustrated--with tongue firmly in cheek--by Kurt Cyrus, Avalanche Annie is the wildest, woolliest, most awe-inspiring, and goofiest tall tale since Paul Bunyan hitched up Babe the Blue Ox.

Spunky Annie Halfpint is not your average hero, but she will capture your heart (and an avalanche!). The author's creative language in this book immediately drew me into Annie's story. "Her voice booms soft as thunder. Her hair grows thick as ink. Her skin feels smooth as gravel. My daughter is a struggling reader, so I'm always looking for high-interest topics. After reading Avalanche! and Volcano! in this early chapter book series, she's now hooked on natural disaster stories. She zipped through both books in a couple of days--very unusual for her. They have a nice combination of real-life survival tales and interesting science, including how to avoid avalanches and what to do if you can't. Both books begin with survival stories involving kids her age--sledders trapped under an avalanche in Minnesota and a boy in Turkey who survived an earthquake inside a collapsed apartment building. Great stuff.

The 1985 Bears set a standard for success which hasn't been matched in the past quarter century. The Monsters of the Midway did not only demolish the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX, they dominated the NFL that season the way few teams have in the history of the sport. The Bears finished the regular season with a gleaming 15-1 record, perfect but for a slip-up on Dec. 2 in Miami. In a span of three games in November, the Bears defeated Detroit, Dallas, and Atlanta by a combined score of 104-3. In Reflections on the 1985 Bears, fans get a revealing look at Chicago's last Super Bowl champion through the eyes of the team's head coach. Coach Ditka vividly describes the emotion, humor, and inner turmoil of his team from quarterback Jim McMahon's arrival in training camp with a Mohawk haircut through the team's hit single, "The Super Bowl Shuffle" through their eventual Super Bowl triumph in New Orleans. Along the way, Ditka shares his memories of such characters as McMahon, Walter Payton, William "Refrigerator" Perry, Richard Dent, Wilbur Marshall, Otis Wilson and others. He reflects on his power struggles with both the front office and assistant coach Buddy Ryan. In the end, football fans will gain a new appreciation for one of the best teams assembled in the history of the sport, the 1985 Chicago Bears.

                                              Book Description

Sydney Schuster was an easy target growing up; the bullies beat him up every day. Now, he's a millionaire with bullies for sons. He was willing to accept that fate (albeit with bitterness), but an opportunity arises. Syd's former tormentor, now a priest, hits him up for the money to save his school. Sydney hits back with an offer the priest could not refuse.

With Syd's financial backing, Father John will run a new boarding school for ten inner-city teenagers. The kids, however, aren't just there to study. They're the guinea pigs in a social experiment. Their mission: to break the bully/victim cycle, without breaking a few simple rules. If they succeed, they win five million dollars-half a million per student. But if even one rule is broken, no one gets a cent. By the end of the school year, few rules remain intact. The question is, how much will the judges find out? And how much will they tolerate?

The Prize is a very thought provoking story. It begins with the introduction of two high school students. Syd is a bright, sensitive guy. John is the football jock, as well as a bully. What transpires between the bully and the victim leads to violence and many years of soul searching for Syd. The story then fast-forwards to forty-five years later.

There is a meeting between John and Syd. Their memories of what happened and why are vastly different. Syd still sees himself as the victim and John feels that Syd was a wimp that would have not been picked on if only he would have stuck up for himself. Joh challenged Syd with an entirely different way to evaluate his life.

Could there actually be some truth to the idea that Syd played a part in his own victimization? Could it be a fact that bullies and victims are co-conspirators in the tragic cycle of violence? I found that to be an interesting concept. Together, they come up with a plan to study the issues regarding the bully/victim syndrome. In a private school setting, ten students take part in a year long study to see if some will naturally become the aggressive ones, and others to be the passive. Will they be able to work out situations without adult guidance?

This is a very creative story that will leave readers with more knowledge of human behavior and many things to ponder. I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were so well defined that it almost read like a non-fiction. I highly recommend this book for teachers, parents, and counselors. However, I think it should be a required read for adolescents. It could help them grasp the basic tools needed to co-exist in this society. With school violence at an all-time high in this country, we need to look at books like this, which provide fresh insight to old problems.

I believe that "The Prize" was a wonderful, rich story. It was fast-paced enough that I couldn't stop reading it. The plot was great, and it also might've helped that the author was my sister's best friend's grandmother.

This book does what many today don't; it makes you think.

I found it similar to Holes. Even though it is targeted to teens, as an adult, I found it very enjoyable.

It is a "quick and easy" read due the compelling story line and characters, and it stays on track.

I work part time at my son's elementary school in the lunchroom. I have found that I react differently, (and I hope more positively, and proactively), since reading this book.

                                              I highly recommend this book.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Terrific book!.......2003-03-10

Because it speaks to the issue of bullying in a very different way, this is a compelling and entertaining story about life. When the book begins, we learn the story of a very bright but painfully shy young boy whose name is Sydney Schuster. Sidney is constantly taunted during his high school years, and even physically beaten by some of the other students. Not knowing how to handle this situation, he usually ran to a teacher to complain instead of standing up for himself. Of course, this behavior made him an easy target. Sidney was never able to change this situation, and suffered a great deal throughout his high school years.

Sidney grew up and became more successful than he would have ever dreamed. Since his own children became bullies during their school years, Sidney often wondered what actually caused a bully/victim relationship. One day Sidney was approached by John Murphy, one of his previous tormentors in high school. John had become a priest, and needed money to save his Catholic school. Sidney decided to make a deal with Father John about a different kind of school. It would be a boarding school for ten inner-city kids, chosen at random, who would act as guinea pigs in an experiment relating to the bully/victim cycle. These were tough kids; but, if they could manage to remain in the school for one year and get along with each other, they would win five million dollars ý half a million per student. There were a few simple rules, however, and if even one rule got broken, no one would get a cent!

***** I cannot say enough good things about this book. It should be required reading in our schools. The students in this experiment soon learn how hard it is to actually get along with each other and not resort to bullying. Winning the money was their dream, and - after a rough start - they finally settled on some rules of their own to accomplish this. The rules they drew up together, The Twelve Commandments of Proper Conduct, are listed near the end of The Prize. I only wish they were poster size! *****
