Book Description

When It's Time to Say Good Bye to Your Pet.......2007-01-10
This book helped me cope with the loss of my friend/pet. It also helped me to look at death in a different way. And to help me realize that I could welcome another pet into my home. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is grieving the loss of a pet.
Different from the rest............2003-03-20
"Now that your loved one is gone, what'll you do?" I might suggest you first buy this book. When I lost my Bitsy, besides being devastated, I had burning questions - Where was she?, Was she safe?, Is she still around?, Will I see her again?, In this lifetime?, and the all-important, Why? My search has been ongoing for the past 3 years she's been gone. I have read nearly everything available written exclusively on the spirituality of animals and their afterlife as well as many books that may contain so much as a sentence in reference to their continued existence. When I discovered Anita Perry's Arf Angels and Other Heavenly Creatures I found a vein of gold in my mining expedition. While each of the stories offer the reader comfort in that we are not alone in our grief, (and in some cases in the decisions we've been forced to make), Ms. Perry gives us stories of purpose and hope. We are given the unique opportunity to look back on a life lived with purpose, give some meaning to the painful end process and banish some of our regrets. Each story relates to us how our individual lives are changed for having had our loved ones in them. The book takes for granted the grief is as real for our animal family as it is for anyone else. No words are wasted defending a position. For that I was refreshed and grateful. It's a matter of fact that animals come into our lives for a reason. It's a matter of fact that we usually survive them and have to come to terms with losing them. It's a matter of fact that our beloved family has an afterlife and find ways to let us know they are safe, that they still love us, and are around us even still. Reading these stories has given me comfort, hope, and peace. They will you, too. Now, Ms Perry, Will they come back?

An essential astronomy volume for the serious amateur.......2006-04-12
Because the author presents photographs of significant objects in the context of the night sky that realistically reflects how the amateur will actually perceive them is what makes this volume so valuable. Images from powerful observatory telescopes, as marvelous and instructive as they are, tend to raise our expectations about what we are likely to encounter with our relatively small telescopes. Instead the author opts for the subtle drama inherent within an "honest" representation of the proportions of our night sky. The b&w photographs by the author are surprisingly effective given this 'age of color'--indeed, when viewing the night sky through our modest telescopes, the overall effect is one that most resembles the b&w sphere. Again, this is consistent with the author's philosophy: color-sensitive film reveals a spectrum that our eyes themselves are not sensitive to viewing the sky through a scope. I am especially impressed by books that reflect an author's earnestness for the subject matter and approach itself, but this book ranks even high among this select group.
Beatiful pictures and accurate information.......2000-03-20
This book by Hans Vehrenberg is a compilation of a lot of very nice pictures of deep-sky objects taken with more or less modest photographic equipment before the digital processing era. It includes full explanations about each object.
This books shows what can be achieved by a good amateur astrophotographer.

Book Description
In her attempt to escape city life, a journalist confronts the natural and political forces that shape the California landscape.
In 1986, Penelope O'Malley moved to Malibu, at that time a small community of oddballs and cantankerous isolationists, hoping to find peaceful exile from Los Angeles and a life that had become too frantic and confused. She knew little then of the landscape that she hoped would inspire herwho owned it, what manner of flora and fauna it might supportand she wasn't much interested. Nor did she give much thought to the people who would become her neighbors. As it turned out, her life on this urban-wildland frontier was very different from what she had planned.
Malibu Diary is O'Malley's account of her years as a resident of this beautiful, beleaguered Southern California coastal community. Here, a landscape of rare and breathtaking beauty conceals geological and climatic treachery, and human presence endangers a rich but fragile ecosystem. Far from isolating herself from the ills of contemporary urban life, O'Malley found herself deeply engaged in a community where realtors lusted after the magnificent hills and beachfront, Native Americans fought to protect the artifacts of their ancestors, and locals, no matter how resistant to development, were forced to address such pressing urban issues as zoning and sewage treatment. Malibu's decision to incorporate introduced politics into the quiet village, and horrendous fires and floods caused destruction to property and the natural environment.
Malibu Diary combines environmental history, personal memoir, and a lengthy meditation on the complicated relationships between humans and the landscapes they destroy by loving them too much. It is also the story of a colorful community and the diverse people who have chosen to live there; of how change has happened--and why-- and what it has meant. And it is, ultimately, the story of many communities where people try to resist development, "assuming little responsibility to ameliorate the effects of our having settled here." As such, O'Malley sees Malibu as a warning beacon for any beautiful place where settlement is constantly at odds with the natural environment; where a lifestyle, however alluring, is made precarious by the very natural forces that create its charm. Malibu Diary is a powerful and provocative exploration of the tenuous interface between the urban and wild worlds, and of the nature of community in an increasingly profit-oriented society.

You can't see the beach for all the squabbles.......2007-08-08
The author of MALIBU DIARY, Penelope O'Malley, moved to that beach town in 1986, an urban refugee from deeper inside the Los Angeles city sprawl, and stayed until the late 90s. The book wouldn't have caught my eye or caused me to crack open my wallet except that I lived my formative years in Malibu - Zuma Canyon to be exact - from 1957 at age 8 to my departure thirteen years later, about the same length of time as Penelope's residence on Point Dume just across the Pacific Coast Highway. Despite her relatively late arrival, I hoped she'd tell me something I'd missed during the flood of teenage hormones.
Five years after O'Malley's arrival, Malibu removed itself from the governance of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and incorporated. Thus enabled, the citizenry began a period - still continuing to the present, I presume - of interminable tiffs, which is the subject of Penelope's "diary".
There is some useful historical perspective to be derived from the narrative, specifically a thumbnail history of the 17,000-acre Rancho Malibu Topanga y Sequit, one of the last intact Spanish land grants, as purchased by Frederick Hastings Rindge in 1892 and lost piecemeal by his descendents until only 4,000 acres remained under family control in 1961. Also, Malibu's unfortunate and regular association with major wildfires is briefly recounted, including the author's first-hand experiences with such in 1993 and 1996. (In 1958, I watched as the Liberty fire crested the mountains at the north end of Zuma Canyon. My Dad spent a good part of that night's wee hours serving refreshments to fire crews parked on the canyon's access road awaiting the blaze's expected approach. It never happened; the wind shifted.)
Otherwise, MALIBU DIARY is a narrative about disputes: residents sniping at the county fire department for it's handling of brushfires; a home builder locked in a legal battle with two competing and mutually antagonistic representatives of the Chumash Indian tribe over potential artifacts to be found on his construction site; the City of Malibu's stubborn row with L.A. County on which government entity should repair and reopen Kanan Dume Road, a major trans-mountain artery to the San Fernando Valley, after it was blocked by a landslide; the grotty warfare between adherents of the existing septic tank method of waste disposal and proponents of a new, city-wide sewer system. And perhaps the most rancorous and intractable of them all, the feud between wannabe developers of condominiums and apartment buildings, who cloak themselves in the sacred banner of "individual property rights", and the entrenched "slow growth" advocates of single-family dwellings that occupy the local high ground.
Such is this particular piece of Paradise at the rural/(sub)urban interface. It brings to mind the volume by social commentator and essayist Barbara Holland, Bingo Night at the Fire Hall: Rediscovering Life in an American Village, in which she describes taking up residence in an inherited cabin in the Appalachian mountains of northern Virginia only just now coming within reach of the westwardly spreading tentacles of the Washington, DC burbs. However, Barbara is, above all, a wry and gifted humorist. Conversely, Penelope O'Malley, a practicing journalist, reports with virtually no levity at all, and her book suffers for it; there's so much here to be gently ridiculed, but isn't. And, at times, she takes herself a little too seriously, as at the conclusion:
"I went to Malibu a white-robed ascetic, feet shod in sandals, so rawboned at first I never thought to pay homage. Gradually I transformed myself from a bruised and battered pilgrim to a creature tentatively on the wing. Although envisioning the grace of an egret, I was more like a ratty eagle with torn feathers, too long shut in the zoo. Suddenly free, navigating on faulty instincts, I needed not only practice but a flight plan. Today, offerings made, I am more sure of my mecca, bells and cymbals clanging."
Jeez, snap out of it already!
In any case, as a former Malibu inhabitant, I'm awarding four stars, both for the happy memories of the place of my youth MALIBU DIARY brought back and for the value the book might have for anyone considering a move into the line of fire, figuratively and literally. Otherwise, unless the reader is generally interested in the sorts of hot buttons that ignite the combative instincts within any village, town or city, pass on by.

Customer Reviews:
Useful resource for planning the hike.......2007-07-18
Especially if you plan to do a more extended tour of Mount Whitney (vs. the 1-day, up-and-back route) this book comes in handy to help make informed trail (= permit!) and camping decisions ahead of time. Once you've read it, suggest to save weight that you xerox and bring along only the relevant pages to your hike, as much of the book is about preparation, facts, and planning. It does not, of course, replace your topographic map. :)
We used it recently on a very enjoyable 4-day camping trip and ascent of Mt. Whitney.
We did enjoy the Appendix as well - especially with the "Facts, Figures, and Firsts" and the "Fourteeners in California" reference tables.
A mountain to climb?.......2007-01-20
Great book. I have 2 other guides for the same mountain, one is also really good, the other a bit so so, (lacking in depth of detail).
This one though is my favourite, I find myself refering back to it to confirm the other guides. This is the one that will accompany me in June 2007 when I trek the Circumnavigation Route to the summit. The background, history, geographical and the general information contained within sets this one aside as my personal definitive guide.
Best Whitney guide available.......2006-08-06
The author, Paul Richins, Jr., starts off this excellent back country guide with a brief introduction to the region, some cautionary commentary, and some real world common sense recommendations on what, and what not to bring on your trip(s). He then describes useage of the book and proceeds to detail the various routes. He covers the basics of getting to the trailheads, details various legs of the routes with common stops and starts and points out areas of risk where appropriate. Unlike other reviewers, I found his approach to be accurate on the trails I am familiar with, but I would caution anyone attempting these trips to thoroughly map out their trek using the most current topographic maps available.
I think the other reviewers that found fault with the book were negligent in recognizing that it is a "guide" book, not a scientific treatise. The trail and cross country conditions one encounters are not static and a certain degree of subjectivity must creep into descriptions that change from season to season. For that reason no one should ever plan a back country trip based solely on a guide book written years distant from one's own journey. Additinally, trail conditions should be verified at the appropriate Ranger Station, ideally speaking directly with field Rangers who have been in the area recently. Finally, current, up to date topographic maps and the ability to read them along with reasonably proficient back country skills are the bare minimums for any of the cross country routes and the multi day trail hikes detailed in the text.
With regard to the criticism leveled against the author's description of the "Meysan Lake Route", I don't know what these reviewers were talking about. First of all, if it's a "route" it involves cross-country travel and the author clearly delineates this in the description. Further, he goes on to describe it as a "strenuous" route and labels it class 2. A little bit of common sense gleaned from the telling data of a 8971' elevation gain in 12.1 miles should be sufficient for anyone attempting it. I've made this one and I might be more apt to label it class 3 as it is strenuous, if not downright grueling....it's also magnificent.
This book is as good as any guide book out there, is well written and contains a lot of information on this specific area just not available elsewhere. If you're going to hike in the Whitney area, it's a must have....just make sure you have the requisite skills to handle the adversity that comes with the territory.
Let's Climb NOW!.......2006-07-22
Excellent book - material presented in a totally unbiased and honest way. No sugar coating! Should be required reading before you are issued a wilderness permit. Thanks!
Lots of options.......2005-10-26
I actually purchased this book after I summitted Mt. Whitney. I wished I had found it ahead of time. Lots of great information. I had no idea how many trail heads there are. We backpacked on our trip and used the Main Mt. Whitney Trail, but I would really like to try out some of the other trails Paul suggests. Even if you don't plan to go all the way to the top of Whitney, many of the trails described in this book would be wonderful day or backpacking adventures. I found the Appendix information very useful, too, particularly the food and gear suggestions. The facts and figures section made me fully appreciate the accomplishment of reaching the summit, especially when I discovered that only 1/3 of all hikers reach the top. My only disappointments with the book are that I wish there were color photographs and more information about Mt. Whitney itself (such as history and factoids). Otherwise, this is an extremely practical guide for preparing and planning a trip to the tallest peak in the continental U. S.
Book Description
This brand new thesaurus from Oxford, the most trusted name in reference, is the first to be developed by writers, for writers. In addition to the more than 300,000 synonyms and 10,000 antonyms found in the thesaurus, each of our distinguished editorial board members (including David Auburn, Michael Dirda, David Lehman, Stephin Merritt, Francine Prose, Zadie Smith, Jean Strouse, David Foster Wallace, and Simon Winchester) has contributed frank, funny, thoughtful, and, most of all, word-wise mini-essays on words that they particularly love, hate, admire, or are just plain puzzled by. Even more helpful for writers in search of the perfect word, this new thesaurus contains nearly two hundred word banks, collections of nouns to add exact detail to your writing. (Was it just bread, or was it chapatti, rye, dal, or pita?) Brand-new word spectrums show where your word falls in a line between two polar opposites (passable is three-quarters of the way from beautiful to ugly). Other features include quick guides to easily confused words; helpful, real-world usage guidance to tricky sticking points of grammar and word choice; and careful, expert distinctions among awkward synonyms. All Oxford American dictionaries use an easy-to-use respelling system to show how entries are pronounced. It uses simple, familiar markings to represent common American English sounds. The Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus will unlock the power of language and is certain to be the thesaurus that says on the desk--and stays open.

worth the buy.......2007-09-02
This thesaurus contains a plethora of useful synonyms. However it is not a replacement for a good unabridged dictionary.Inclusion of spelling aid would upgrade it to five stars category.
Amazingly Constructed - Priceless to All Authors.......2007-08-21
I have used a number of Thesaurus versions in the past, but have never encounterd one so complete and helpful. Since my first published book, I have been studying a number of books to improve my writing skills. Too often prose becomes boring to editors, agents and readers alike. The Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus has helped me keep my work fresh and non-repetitive. I would have paid twice the price. Every writer should own one.Tommie & Grope
The Best I've Ever Used.......2007-08-20
Despite some reviews, not every thesaurus is for writers. Some are simply meant to give the average person a few alternatives, and are quite limited. This however is different. Exhaustive even. Something a writer can greatly benefit from when needing to express themselves in a totally unique way. Keeps one from becoming repetitive.
This is the one to get!.......2007-08-08
This is an essential for those days when you can't think of the right words. (And it's way better than an online thesaurus, or the lousy one that comes with MS Word.) This version is useful but, oddly enough, also really cool and fun. The Word Notes in it are great little essays that will completely sidetrack you from whatever you were trying to look up in the first place. Some of the contributors are among the best contemporary writers--getting advice from them just adds to the power of this resource.
INDISPENSIBLE.......2007-08-05
I asked for this book and received it as a gift and it was everything I hoped it would be. I took an intesive 10 week course that required write-ups of each day's lectures, and I used this book every day, and was never disappointed. I keep it right by my computer and have just really grown attached to it.
I haven't had a thesaurus in years, so I really can't compare it to what else is out there, but it never let me down and I highly recommend it.
I hope you like it as much as I do.
Product Description
The Best thesaurus I have ever owned. Great for college students or writers. Large book. Over 1000 pages. More than 300,000 synonyms and 100,000 antonyms.
