The fourth edition is (1) a revision of the theoretical framework and the research evidence supporting this model of diffusion, and (2) a new intellectual venture, in that new concepts and new theoretical viewpoints are introduced. This edition differs from its predecessors in that it takes a much more critical stance in its review and synthesis of 5,000 diffusion publications. During the past thirty years or so, diffusion research has grown to be widely recognized, applied and admired, but it has also been subjected to both constructive and destructive criticism. This criticism is due in large part to the stereotyped and limited ways in which many diffusion scholars have defined the scope and method of their field of study. Rogers analyzes the limitations of previous diffusion studies, showing, for example, that the convergence model, by which participants create and share information to reach a mutual understanding, more accurately describes diffusion in most cases than the linear model.

Rogers provides an entirely new set of case examples, from the Balinese Water Temple to Nintendo videogames, that beautifully illustrate his expansive research, as well as a completely revised bibliography covering all relevant diffusion scholarship in the past decade. Most important, he discusses recent research and current topics, including social marketing, forecasting the rate of adoption, technology transfer, and more. Rogers, professor and chair of the Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico, explains how new ideas spread via communication channels over time. Such innovations are initially perceived as uncertain and even risky. To overcome this uncertainty, most people seek out others like themselves who have already adopted the new idea. Thus the diffusion process consists of a few individuals who first adopt an innovation, then spread the word among their circle of acquaintances--a process which typically takes months or years. But there are exceptions: use of the Internet in the 1990s, for example, may have spread more rapidly than any other innovation in the history of humankind. Interesting.......2007-09-12

This book is fascinating. It discusses the spread of ideas and products through communities, how they spread and why. Rogers breaks down the process and describes different categories of people depending on when they take up the innovation. This book is very readable, and although written by an academic, not written in academese. It covers various domains of interest (agriculture, sociology, marketing) and has something for everyone.

The one thing I think Rogers has missed is subjective norm. Not only do people weigh the relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability, but they also weigh up what they believe their personal network believes what they should do.

For instance, I will do something that someone important (to me)tells me to do, even if I personally find it silly, simply because I put enough weight and consideration into what I believe is their opinion.

Rogers gets close to that with the discussion of personal networks and adoption of innovations by organisations, but still misses the point. That is why this book only gets four stars, from me.

Very insightful. A must read for a variety of academic disciplines. I don't know that I've been in a professor's office at my university and not seen this book on the shelf!

As a physician who has had the pleasure to experience life-changing innovations in his medical career, the chance to read Dr Rogers book on Innovation has been a real delight. Technology has changed so much around us in the last half of the 20th century that we can scarcely describe what life was like before "the innovation".

To my friends who happen to be innovators, early adaptors, beta testers and entrepreneurs, I recommend the book to provide the scientific disicpline with its glossary, case reports, primary scientific citations and organization of innovation theory that ones needs if one is in an "innovation" field and wishes to communicate professionally.

To the casual reader who is fascinated by the world around him/her and wishes to explore innovation scientifically, then this should be considered the "primer".

There are several well written books on innovation but this is one of the most excellent piece of work on diffusion of innovation. Though if we look at history, research on the diffusion of innovations model began with the Bryce and Gross' (1943) investigation of the diffusion of hybrid seed corn among Iowa farmers. They explained how it came to attention and which of two channels (i.e., mass communication and interpersonal communication with peers) led farmers to adopt the new innovation.

But Rogers has further discussed the five characteristics of a technology acceptance - 1) relative advantage, the extent to which it offers improvements over available tools, 2) compatibility, its consistency with social practices and norms among its users, 3) complexity, its ease of use or learning, 4) trialability, the opportunity to try an innovation before committing to use it, 5) observability, the extent to which the technology's gains are clear to see.

As a pest control educator, I have LOTS of pest control reference books. "Truman's Scientific Guide" is my most used book. While others may have some higher levels of specificity at times, Truman's is the best overall!

I have several Spanish books and this is the one I keep going back too. It consists of basic, step by step ways to learn spanish. It's written in language very easy to understand. It's definitely a book you want to invest in to help you learn spanish. In fact, I'm ordering my second copy because my husband has adopted my copy.

I have sat around at Barnes & Noble flipping through all sorts of spanish books and finally came across this one. It's DEFINATELY the EASIEST to read. The chapters are broken up really well towards everday situations. Compared to other books this one has plentiful of variety of vocabs to learn (also has pronunciation for it to help you say the words correctly). So I'm really confident with this one!

I have been looking for a book to help get me over that little hump in learning spanish, and I finally found it. My wife speaks fluently, and has been doing her best to help me learn, but this has bridged the gap between repeating and actually learning. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to either build a base for spanish, or like me, to help get over the hump of just knowing basic phrases.

Don't waste your time or money.......2006-11-13

The other review was obviously written by someone related to the book. When you buy a Spanish learning book one of the most important things to look for is pronunciation. Well this book has very little of that, and when it does half the time it gives some pronunciation you cant even pronounce. Examples: "desperdiciar.....dehs-pehr-SYAHR." "naranja.....nah-RAHN-hhah". How the hell are you suppose to pronounce something with a double hh. This is a few but there are many more examples that are troubling. 1/4 of the book has pronunciations scattered throughout the book. The rest of it you have to guess how to pronounce the words. I have read 3/4 of this book and it has not been helpful at all in learning Spanish.

This is an excellent overview to learning Spanish and is one of the best books on the market. The author is passionate about his subject and understands how to make learning a new language fun.

The Everything series is well done and presents the information in a very accessible format.

Extraordinary and Original.......2006-09-12

Only Walter Wangerin, Jr. could've written a novel of such vast scope. This beautiful (and often frightening) tale of the lives of the Lakota tribe is woven with such mysticism, power and amazing imagery that it stands as one of Wangerin's most effective works to date. I've always been a huge fan of the author, but this book sat on my shelves for over a year. Not being at all knowledgeable about Indian lore and beliefs, I quite possibly assumed that I might not be as interested in this book as in other more "accessible" works by Wangerin. But at the end of the book, I truly felt...well...honored...that I had been allowed to have spent that time learning about such a culture..even in a work of fiction. There is so much dignity, beauty, and transcendent truth about the Lakota people in these pages, that I was overwhelmed. And Wangerin's lengthy and extraordinary "afterward" section where he details his own experiences attending a "Fire Dance" over a period of a few days is as moving as the novel itself. From a reader who has had nothing but the highest praise for many of Wangerin's other works, "The Crying For A Vision" stands as one of his masterworks.

Okay, that was different........2004-05-25

This powerful novel makes you feel like you are in a different culture. I'm no Lakota, and cannot speak to the authenticity of culture portrayed by this Lutheran pastor. All the characters, including the "villain", are multi-dimensional. It made me think about the meaning of success, relationships, loyalty, and societal change, among other things. Maybe the Lutheran/Lakota thing is why this novel (right word?) has not been more successful. I'm glad for the new edition, with a lengthy addition about Wangerin attending a Sun Dance. My son, a reader of integrity, liked it too, said it was now on his Top 5 List, if he had one.

Excellent Read.......2003-02-05

This book weaves a wonderful web of a Lakota oral tradition along side a capivating hero. It was so absorbing that I felt as if I faced the characters obstacles along side him.

Prophetic Mandate and the Artist.......2007-08-16

The best books I've read didn't end up in my hands by random selection, but they were recommended to me by a friend or teacher. Without the friend who sent me 'Crying for a Vision', I most likely would not have set eyes on the book. Steve Scott was unknown to me (I've never run across him in the underground music scene); and who would have expected a rock-n-roller to have much to say about religion and the arts? Steve Scott has a message, and he delivers it well.

The primary audience for this book is the Christian artist. That said, I am Christian but not an artist (at least not in the traditional sense); I work as a software engineer; but maybe I am a poet at heart: because Steve Scott's book nudged at my heart and mind. His book needs to be widely read.

The book titles itself a collection of essays, and you could pick and choose which to read in whatever order; but there is a flow and order in their presentation, and the collection is best read from beginning to end ... like a book of chapters. Some of the text toward the beginning was the driest for me (how to look at art so you can form a response, or rather, how different personalities and cultures respond to art). But don't stop too soon. This chapter is important background. Read it and move on to the meat.

You can consider the 'Crying for a Vision' book to be a guidebook for the Christian artist. Not a guidebook with all the answers, but an aid for you that asks so many questions. And if Steve Scott's writing doesn't provide you with all the questions, then the study guide appendix should satisfy. It is not a book to be blown through like a NY Times Bestseller novel. Take some time to chew on it.

One thing that I took away from reading this book is the importance of a sense of wonder. The writer who has most influenced me, G.K. Chesterton, had this sense of wonder in his life and in his art; so this element is often in my mind. Scott's book reminded me of the need for Christians to evangelize through this sense of wonder (the apostolate of wonder??) when he wrote: "I believe that Christian artists can take on the prophetic mandate in their work, and confront more deeply than others who try." It is needed in our post-grunge world.

Walking On Water Wasn't Built in a Day.......2007-04-28

Cards on the table. I am the editor of this book, but were I not, I'd still give it a five, since Amazon doesn't seem to have a six. Why does the editorial blurb say it's a new edition? The core of this book came out in Britain on Stride Books in 1991 as Crying for a Vision. It was already a collection of essays, but in the book they hang together remarkably well. I am one of the zillions of readers and listeners terminally affected by Steve Scott, who thereafter are never the same. Why do I say listeners? Because I found out about Steve in the liner notes of a Larry Norman record, and was knocked out when I heard him for myself on his Exit label mid '80s record, Love in the Western World (which came out on CD in a limited run in 2000). The band on that record was the 77s, and he wrote their early songs when they were still the Scratch Band. The producer was Steven Soles, of the Alpha Band with David Mansfield and T-Bone Burnett, and fresh from Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. My title comes from a Steve Scott song on this album that he got from beat/ zen poet Jack Kerouac, and Steve is in many ways his latter day descendent.

Steve's other albums work from his poem travelogues, The Boundaries, which he reads over tape loops of synthesized and world music. Four additional essays (Part Two) in this new edition show Steve's way of working, and provide samples of his writing. Part three provides a study guide for the book for use in groups and individual study. Steve wrote a new introduction, and in a brief interview comments on the "state of the arts". He also did a new interview about the book at alivingdog and has an essay in the new edition of It Was Good, a collection of ruminations about faith and art. Rock journalist Steve Turner, author of The Gospel According to the Beatles, probably said it best. Steve is a unique guy with a unique vision. So let me invite you, in my best Ed Sullivan voice, to meet him. "Ladies and gentlemen, Steve Scott."
