    Book Description

Americans today often associate scientific and technological change with progress and personal well-being. Yet underneath our confident assumptions lie serious questions. In Inventing Ourselves Out of Jobs? Amy Sue Bix locates the origins of this confusion in the Great Depression, when social and economic crisis forced many Americans to re-examine ideas about science, technology, and progress. Growing fear of "technological unemployment" -- the idea that increasing mechanization displaced human workers -- prompted widespread talk about the meaning of progress in the new Machine Age. In response, promoters of technology mounted a powerful public relations campaign: in advertising, writings, speeches, and World Fair exhibits, company leaders and prominent scientists and engineers insisted that mechanization ultimately would ensure American happiness and national success.

Emphasizing the cultural context of the debate, Bix concentrates on public perceptions of work and technological change: the debate over mechanization turned on ideology, on the way various observers in the 1930s interpreted the relationship between technology and American progress. Although similar concerns arose in other countries, Bix highlights what was unique about the American response: "Discussion about workplace change," she argues, "became entwined with particular musings about the meaning of American history, the western frontier, and a sense of national destiny." In her concluding chapters and epilogue, Bix shows how the issue changed during World War II and in postwar America and brings the debate forward to show its relevance to modern readers.

3 out of 5 stars A start but a lot more work needs to be done.......2007-03-18

Amy Sue Bix attempts to take a complex issue in American economic, business and technological history to show how it developed in this country. Overall the book repeats itself again and again on many issues. It focuses on the musicians put out of work by the talkies and the dual telephone system which replaced the operators. The arguments presented are well articulated but you feel as though you are getting the same information again and again. Although the book says it goes up through the 1980's the majority really focuses on the depression and the start of the war. This was a time period in which fear was rampant that jobs were being taken away by machines everyday. The cartoons are amusing but the process just seems to be repeating itself. The final chapter gets to the main point of the book and brings the reader up to speed from the 1950's to the 1990's and how technological progress affects jobs. Overall this book will only serve to show how unions have taken this issue and ran too far with it. There is little information that really handles this complex problem. This book is a start to a very complex topic but a lot more work needs to be done.

    Book Description

Rudolf Steiner, the often undervalued, multifaceted genius of modern times, contributed much to the regeneration of culture. In addition to his philosophical teachings, he provided ideas for the development of many practical activities including education—both general and special—agriculture, medicine, economics, architecture, science, religion, and the arts. Today there are thousands of schools, clinics, farms, and many other organizations based on his ideas.

Steiner's original contribution to human knowledge was based on his ability to conduct spiritual research, the investigation of metaphysical dimensions of existence. With his scientific and philosophical training, he brought a new systematic discipline to the field, allowing for conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer from childhood, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree, enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries of life.

Topics include: the evolving human being; cosmos as the source of life; plants and the living earth; farms and the realms of nature; bringing the chemical elements to life; soil and the world of spirit; supporting and regulating life processes; spirits of the elements; nutrition and vitality; responsibility for the future.

Before reading this book, I had been intrigued at the idea of Biodynamic Agriculture. My thought was to learn about Biodynamics from the source- Rudolph Steiner.
I couldn't even stomach reading this book. It is so New Age. It talks about plants and animals having spirits, and other things that are too dangerous to one's soul to read or mention. This book is incompatible with Christian values. I burned it.

Very satosfoed with this book. It's a bit citified for me, perhaps, but otherwise, it's a comprehensive treatise on Texas flora.

        4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2006-09-21

This is a highly useful, and useable, book outlining the native Texas plants that have significant gardening interest. I only wish I could have gotten a hardback version, because the binding is getting quite a lot of use ;) . It is well-illustrated, offers an interesting site-plan example for each of the various soil/climate regions in Texas, and contains a good deal of useful information.

My only wish would be for more information regarding adapting plants to areas outside of their original regions, especially how to accomidate them, if possible, in the Houstom area, because many of the native species listed seem to come from drier regions that don't have gumbo-clay soil.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to Texas gardeners and to gardeners elsewhere interested in utilizing these plants. Although I've heard it said that mixing native plant species with exotics will end with the exotics taking over, I nevertheless think that a wide variety of gardeners could use various plants in the book to replace a number of the exotic, high-maintenence plants that are unfortunately common, and less interesting.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for.......2005-04-29

Although does cover some of the material I was hoping for, it seems to mainly deal with landscaping (duh, read the title guy), I was hoping for a book that dealt more with native plants, covering more plants, more photos, less to do with landscaping, more to do with identification. Maybe that book exists somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars TX Native Landscaping Must Have Book.......2005-04-25

This is the best book I have found with information about TX native plants and it has great ideas for TX Native Plant Lanscaping for all regions of TX, from the Heat and Humidity of East TX to the heat, cold, and wind of the Panhandle. A must have information book in this era of water shortages.

And if you want landscaping plans for landscaping your Texas property with great species of native plants, this is the book. Sally Wasowski is the best! I'm so happy it's available again! 3 out of 5 stars Good overview and translation of classic oriental book.......2006-02-25

This book offers a good overview of the original bubishi. It will give excellent historical reference that will build up on your knowledge of martial arts history. A big part of the book is taken by ancient oriental medicine recipies which are interesting to read but little practical use for people not familiar or interested in herbal medicine. If this book is for history or martial arts techniques, it's better as a supplement to other books fully dedicated to each of these two subjects, it'll help building your rounded understanding of martial arts but won't teach you specific styles or techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Good book about history of Okinawan Karate.......2005-11-24

_The Bible of Karate Bubishi_ is a pleasant book to read. Patrick McCarthy is not the author, but the translator and commentator of a book whose original author & date of origin are unknown.

"Bubishi" is the name of a document that was read, copied and passed from master to student in the fighting traditions of Okinawa since the mid-1800s. The Chinese ideograms that make up its title can be interpreted as "a manual of military preparation". I cannot do better than Mr. McCarthy's description of Bubishi on page 27 of the book, so I will quote that here:

" Okinawa's Bubishi is an anthology of Chinese gongfu, its history, philosophy, and application. Focusing on the White Crane style from Yongchuan village, Fujian Province, this compilation also addresses Shaolin Monk Fist gongfu and reveals its relationship to Okinawa's civil fighting legacy of karate-do."
" The contents of this anthology's thirty-two articles include White Crane gongfu history, moral philosophy, advice on etiquette, comparisons of styles, defensive applications, herbal medicines, training mechanics, and Monk Fist Boxing."

McCarthy's translation is broken up into four major sections:
            - History and Philosophy
            - Chinese Medicine and Herbal Pharmacology
            - The Vital Points
            - Fighting Techniques

Part One: History and Philosophy has translations and commentary from the six chapters of Bubishi that dealt with history, philosophy, & etiquette for the martial artist. It also includes McCarthy's notes on possible origins of the Bubishi document in China, different theories on the origin of Karate-do, history of Karate-do from the Meiji era, and Okinawan Karate-do dynasties.

Part Two: Chinese Medicine and Herbal Pharmacology is a section that is often vague, but also shows McCarthy's dedication to this project. Ten of the thirty-two articles in the original Bubishi were devoted to medicine & healing. McCarthy spent a number of years consulting with Chinese herbalists to understand what plants were being referred to by the pictures & Chinese ideograms. This was no small task, as many of the ideograms had been miscorrectly copied at one point or another during the past century. McCarthy & the herbalists sometimes had to first figure out what ideograms made no sense, before they could start deciphering what the prescriptions should perhaps have been.

McCarthy is very honest about the facts that (1) no instructions for how to administer the herbs were included, so a person would need to take the list to a Chinese herbalist and have them help figure out what plants needed to applied externally, internally, eaten as a powder, drunk as an infusion, etc., and (2) the prescriptions in Bubishi don't match any current prescriptions in Chinese herbalism, so the information is presented to the reader as is, with no guarantees from McCarthy OR the experts who helped him about whether the prescriptions will be of any use at all.

In part two, only the plants' scientific names are given, and that is the main reason why I give this book four stars and not five. But I also realize McCarthy may have done that deliberately, to discourage experimentation by those who are not herbalists.

Part Three: The Vital Points contains translations of five chapters within Bubishi that deal with vital point striking. McCarthy also includes an introductory section on vital point theory and items of historic note such as the bronze man statues. McCarthy has done a great service to the reader by including both the original diagrams and also more detailed modern anatomical diagrams to show the locations of the striking points.

Part Four: Fighting Techniques includes translations of eleven articles in Bubishi on fighting techniques. McCarthy also includes some notes on Gongfu Quan, Qin Na, and short histories of six different Fujian gongfu styles, including Monk Fist Boxing and five variations of Crane gongfu. The Bubishi articles are very interesting, but sadly there are some where accompanying text and commentary was lost long ago, and all we have today are diagrams of stances & strikes. For those articles where accompanying commentary is available, McCarthy translates the original commentary (which is often in poetic language) and then adds his own notes about what is really meant by "Butterfly Fluttering" and "Blue Dragon Going Out To Seize".

Overall, _The Bible of Karate Bubishi_ is a book I enjoyed reading and found to be very informative.

On a personal note, I am writing this review as someone who typically doesn't read books on martial arts history. There are just too many arts where too much "history" has occurred between different teachers. Consequently figuring out what really happened, even a generation ago, requires reading seven different version told by at least three different people, with allowances made for whether a particular version comes from a personal memoir, a magazine article, or notes from a dojo lecture. And after all that, the reader still won't know if the art is any good, or what its strengths and weaknesses are versus other styles.

I read this book at the behest of one of my teachers, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I am very glad he recommended it to me and a number of other students.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Knowledge!.......2005-11-01

This book is excellent for all martial artiest to read! Mr. McCarthy does an excellent job translating and explaining the translation of the material that is present. This is a good soource for introduction into the vital points of the human body. It also possesses great amounts of history on the white crane systems.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile but Incomplete History.......2004-11-17

Karate students will enjoy this historical review of different styles, karate masters and basic techniques. Just keep in mind that more complete historical material is available. Structured martial arts have been around for thousands of years. Bubishi picks up some vague notions of how various fighting arts mingled with the native arts of Okinawa just a few hundred years ago. Also, don't expect to find useful medicinal recipes or self-defence techniques.

            Book Description

Fifteen-Year-old Sienna Scully is locked in a lonely world of her own. In awe of her father, an unapproachable genius whose towering bronze sculptures have brought him international fame; distant from her mother, who manages her husband's career, Sienna spends her days sketching in the woods, avoiding her parents' glamorous life.

Then Hugh Scully is diagnosed with a serious illness, and everything changes. As Sienna watches helplessly, her mother devotes the same energy to her husband's health that she does to his career, pushing him to try harder, to make himself well. But when Sienna's mother travels out of town, Hugh turns to Sienna, reaching out, asking her to be his companion on a journey first to the seductive world of the Manhattan gallery scene; then to a remote Maine island. And it's there Sienna realizes that Hugh doesn't intend to return; that her new found closeness to her father may have to last her a lifetime.

This book is a compassionate portrait of a complex father-daughter relationship, complicated by the father's serious illness.
This book should only be for mature readers because of offensive language and adult content.

5 out of 5 stars Must-Read for Teens With Terminally-Ill or Suicided Parent.......2002-05-27

I read this book because my 12-year-old only-child male godchild's father has a brain tumor and I wondered if this book might address any issues that he is facing. It does; in a beautiful and uplifting way that makes its dying father-character's suicide understandable and a kind of affirmation of life. It also treats with unsentimental compassion the mother's denial that the man she has held at the center of her world could be dying.

This story throws together the father and only-daughter characters in the crucible of the father's terminal illness in such a way that they finally connect and she accepts the humanness of her parents while *blossoming out of* her own perfectionism and fear to risk being human herself. Heartwarming. Moving. Courage-inspiring.

I read it straight through in one sitting. Compellingly written!

I was moved to tears toward the end, not by sadness but because I identify with the courage and vulnerability it takes to be human and to accept the limitations and recognize the oh-so-human, flawed love that we earthlings bring to our life-journeys.

5 out of 5 stars The best book you'll probaly ever read.......2001-03-09

I picked up this book by chance while wandering around my local library for a good book. Though I enjoy the romance genre more than others, this book touched me so much and had me crying so much from beginning to end. This book is for anyone especially for people who feel that they're parents don't love them cause as you'll read that your parents always love you they just have trouble showing sometimes as the main charcter of this book discovered. Go Pick up this book! Trust me it's amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Fade Far Away..........1999-10-11

I've picked up this book at the library and had to read it for my book report. For the first few days that I had the book in my hands, the story did not seem appealing to me probably because of it's cover, but when I decided to really focus into the book it offered me a lot. And Sienna the character was a strong girl who've moved on with her father's death. Its a must read and its also a book that you can relate to. I was in total sympathy and you will be driven in too...

5 out of 5 stars FFA is a gripping, sensitive exploration of a teen's growth........1999-09-04

Lantz's Fade Far Away is a sensitive, unsentimental exploration of a young woman's coming of age in relation to her father's sudden slip from vigor to a fatal illness. Issues such as her artist parents' emotional unavailability to Sienna, an "accidental" child born in their 40's, are shown from Sienna's point of view, yet the parents are not demonized: the emotional needs of all three family members are taken into account. This is a "novel of education" in that Sienna, through an unexpected journey with her father to an isolated family vacation spot, sees her father's needs and weaknesses over the course of several days, and comes to an awareness of her own needs in relation to him and her mother. The novel is, in addition, a real page-turner without in the least catering to violence or prurient interests; the central core is the careful unfolding of Sienna's self-awareness and the interaction with her father. In the course of this journey of self-discovery, the character develops an awareness of the complexity of family members' emotional interdependence, while maintaining an awareness of the essential independence of each of the people. The childlike need for creative expression, which is central to the vocation of any artist, is balanced with the adult need to deal with the given limitations of reality. Ultimately, the complementary poles represented by the need to "do your own thing" in the best sense and, conversely, the importance of acknowledging the needs of others, are balanced in this insightful novel.
