Did socialist policies leave the economies of Eastern Europe unprepared for current privatization efforts? Under communist rule, were rural villages truly left untouched by capitalism? In this historical ethnography of rural Hungary, Martha Lampland argues not only that the transition to capitalism was well under way by the 1930s, but that socialist policies themselves played a crucial role in the development of capitalism by transforming conceptions of time, money, and labor.

Exploring the effects of social change thrust upon communities against their will, Lampland examines the history of agrarian labor in Hungary from World War I to the early 1980s. She shows that rural workers had long been subject to strict state policies similar to those imposed by collectivization. Since the values of privatization and individualism associated with capitalism characterized rural Hungarian life both prior to and throughout the socialist period, capitalist ideologies of work and morality survived unscathed in the private economic practices of rural society. Lampland also shows how labor practices under socialism prepared the workforce for capitalism. By drawing villagers into factories and collective farms, for example, the socialist state forced farmers to work within tightly controlled time limits and to calculate their efforts in monetary terms. Indeed, this control and commodification of rural labor under socialism was essential to the transformation to capitalism.

The Soviet elite has undergone two major transformations in the twentieth century: Stalin's purges and replacement of old elite by Soviet trained proletarian modernizing managers; and, under Gorbachev, the current displacement of the modernizing managers by "politicians." This book is an analytical study of the Soviet political elite as a body, from 1917 to 1990. Focusing on the changing structure of the elite , it is based partly on Kenneth C. Farmer's database consisting of biographical and career data on over 1500 high-level leaders. Farmer also synthesizes the work of four classical theorists--Gaetano Mosca, Vilfredo Pareto, Max Weber, and Alexis de Tocqueville--with more contemporary theorists. The book's unique features include its scope, the central database (the largest on which any work has been published), and its creative theoretical approach. Farmer concludes that the dismantling of the personnel selection system with competitive elections deprives the elite of the ability to reproduce itself. New voluntary associations make possible the emergence of genuine "strategic elites." In examining the ramifications of this new system, this book is one of the first studies to apply a structural-anthropological theoretical framework to the phenomenon of Soviet elites. Scholars in the Soviet studies field will find this unique theoretical approach refreshing and thought provoking.

In this Symposium, researchers specializing in pulsation, rotation, magnetic fields and stellar winds are brought together for the first time in order to broaden our understanding of O and B stars. Thanks to advances in digital spectroscopy, new types of pulsating B stars have been discovered. The pulsations can be understood in terms of the recent revision of metal opacities, but the effects of rapid rotation and magnetic fields need further study. Observations in the UV and X-ray regions demonstrate that many B and Be stars show other activity, besides pulsation which is not yet understood. The reason for the enhanced mass loss in Be stars is a question which dominates the Symposium and which remains unanswered, although it is surely to be found in activity at or near the photosphere coupled with rotation. It is shown that the geometry of the circumstellar envelopes around Be stars is indeed a flattened disk as they can now be optically resolved. The variability of radiatively-driven winds from O and B stars are likely related to the rotation of the star. This underlines the central theme of the book: that the various phenomena seen in these stars cannot be studied in isolation.

This book is great! Me and my Jeep are loving it. Once reading the little part from the page I knew I had to have the book to atleast finish that story.

Good Information.......2005-10-26

This book has some very useful information and is very easy to understand. I thought that the extra equipment/gear lists were a bit long and for myself some is not realistic to carry. If the information in this book is combined with other publications a good list of gear to carry on a 4 wheel adventure could be developed. The additional resources listed in this book were also very helpful. For new and experienced off-roaders this book is a useful tool.

Good introduction.......2003-06-18

This book is a basic introduction to driving off-road. If you don't know what a locker is, how it works or why you might want one for off-road use, you'll find the answers in this book. On the other hand, if you've decided to save money on a locker by welding the spider gears together in your garage, this is not the book for you.

Having said that, I think it's a very good introduction and I knocked off one star for its only fault -- I found the organization a bit strange. If you read through the book cover-to-cover though, you'll know where to find what you need in the book. I'd give it four and a half stars if I could.

On Amazon's recommendation, I bought this book with The Off-Road 4-Wheel Drive Book by Jack Jackson, which is a very different animal. Jackson's book is for hard-core expeditions more than recreational off-roading. Many paragraphs start with sentences like, "As I forded a raging river during the rainy season in Pakistan, the engine suddenly stalled." If you're planning on crossing the Sahara, I'd recommend Jackson's book for you. Even if you're not, he does give good ideas for tough situations and you know you're getting advice that's been tested off-road in some of the worst conditions imaginable.

The bottom line: if you're just starting out, buy DeLong's book alone. If you find yourself venturing off-road more and more and you'd like to be more independent, buy Jackson's book as a follow-up.

An excellent addition to any personal library.......2003-04-09

recently purchased a Jeep with the intention of doing more 4x4 off-road exploration in the upcoming months. In my search for information I stumbled upon Brad DeLong's 4-Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving. This book clearly and confidently spelled out all that I needed to know to begin my adventures in a safe (individually as well as environmentally), respectful and confident manner. I was so pleased to find the author's compassion and sound respect for the environment and how he simply challenges his readers to have the integrity to do the same.

4x4 Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving is clearly organized into 14 chapters and several information filled appendices with resources for continued education. Packing Up - The Basic Toolbox, Rocks and Ravines - Basic Crawling, and Winches and Jacks - Up and Out are some examples of the chapters included. Each chapter presents basic knowledge and details on its theme and further clarifies the information with personal accounts that seem to wrap it all together for the reader.

This is an excellent addition to any personal library or bookshelf! Anyone who drives a vehicle with 4x4 and/or owns an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) will find useful information in this text and will benefit from its application at sometime in their life as a driver. Brad Delong presents information for all - from those experienced in 4x4 adventures to those with even a small bit of interest in 4x4s.

Simplistic, but then it's meant for beginners.......2003-03-06

I expected something different, so I don't blame the author, who has written a nice little treatise on 4 wheel driving for beginners. Absolute beginners. This book is a response to the recent popularity of SUV's, and to the fact that many folks have not a clue about what 4 wheel drive is or how to use it. It starts off at ground zero with the heartwarming little tale of a corporate lawyer and his management/executive wife buying their first SUV (awww...) and then taking it out for progressively friskier adventures until they get to really test themselves. Made me want to throw up, but then it's just not my style. If this is your style, if you honestly don't know which wheels get the power when one is stuck, if you have never used a high-lift jack, if you think a Land Rover is the functional equivalent of a Honda CR-V, then this is the book for you. The nutty title should have tipped me off, but I had my guard down and it slipped past me. It's foolish to think you can learn this stuff from a book, anyway...that right there is the BIG fallacy. Get out, get muddy and bust your knuckles and write your own book.

Very useful and highly entertaining book. Good explanations, clear examples and well written.

However, it has two problems that should cost a star each:
- The layout of the pages is quite bad. A reference book like this cannot afford this type of blunder. In all cases it is very difficult to quickly find the actual definition of the words under study. You need to read the whole thing to be able to find it.
- Some of the pitfalls are a bit ludicrous. Do people really confuse Libertarian with Libertine? Industrial with Industrious? Livid with Lurid? Ad hoc with Ad lib? De facto with de jure? In cases like this the author just shows examples of correct usage--perhaps because it would be very difficult to find examples of incorrect usage.

Compelling, but..........2003-03-17

14-year-old Tina Wiens has been growing up uncomfortably in her Mennonite community in Homer, Ontario. She has never been comfortable with her neighbor's narrow-mindedness, bigotry, hypocrisy, racism and disregard for the environment, and the older she gets, the less she can feel for the religion that they themselves can't explain or defend. When her sister becomes pregnant by a migrant worker from Jamaica, and has no intention of getting married, the whole problem comes to a head. Tina's family is quietly ostracized, and disapproval seems to follow her wherever she goes.

That is, until she goes to spend the summer with her Tante (Aunt) Tina. Tante Tina is different than the Mennonites: she laughs and takes breaks from her work, and seems to genuinely enjoy life. As the women of Tina's family move away from Christianity, they learn that there is an exciting world out there, one filled with color and joy, and unlike anything found in the world of the Mennonites.

First of all, I must say that I found this book to be compelling and powerfully written. The book kept me up reading at night, unable to put it down. The author has a way of making you care about her characters, and their trials and tribulations.

But, did I like the book? In a word: No. Perhaps Kathleen Wiebe was involved in a Mennonite community just like the one she describes, I can't say. However, I must say that the Mennonites I know are warm, caring people who are passionate about the world around them. The fact that the book conveys so much minutiae of Mennonite life leads me to believe that the author was intimate with it, but apparently something happened to turn her against it.

I've been told that in 63 B.C., the Roman general Pompey entered Jerusalem, and marched into the Temple. He came out disgusted, announcing that it was dark and empty. And yet, this was the same temple in which the Prophet Isaiah had seen the glory of the Lord. I believe that the difference was not in the temple, but in the observer. When Kathleen Wiebe looks at the Mennonite church, she finds it dark and empty. When I look at it I see many godly, loving people.

So, if you want a dark view of the church, and one girls transcending of its darkness and backwardness, then you *will* like this book. If, however, you don't see groups as entirely of one stripe, but composed of different kinds of people, some good and some bad, then you will find this book tragically one-sided.

Strongly recommended for young readers ages 12 and older.......2001-08-17

Fifteen year old Tina Wiens has been raised in the rural community of Homer, Ontario within a strict Mennonite tradition of hard work, no dancing, no dating, and a strong devotion to the church. Now that she is coming of age, Tina is beginning to resent such a restrictive existence. When her older sister becomes pregnant out of wedlock and is shunned by the church, Tina questions the beliefs she has clung to all her life. Tina escapes the tensions in her family and community by spending the summer with her father's aunt, Tante Tina, who has a farm along the Niagara Escarpment. There she works and carves out her own sort of independence and understanding of the world. But before she can be fully an adult she must confront a dark secret from her past that threatens to tear apart her family and her community. Willow Creek Summer is a superbly written novel strongly recommended for young readers ages 12 and older.
