Explosions of extraordinary violence, are blasting through the Universe every day. If one ever struck our Solar System it would destroy our Sun and all the planets. For years no one could work out what was causing these awesome explosions. Now Maurice van Putten and other elite scientists think they have identified the culprit. It's the most extreme object ever found in the Universe; they have christened it a 'hypernova'. For decades scientists were baffled. Especially disturbing was evidence that these explosions might be coming from the furthest reaches of the Universe, billions of light years away. If this was so, then for us to see them on Earth they had to be on a scale that was beyond our comprehension. According to some, these explosions were so huge that they might even violate the most sacred law in all science: Einstein's famous equation relating mass and energy, E=mc². That law underpins nothing less than our understanding of how our Universe works.

It was not until 1997, when a satellite pinpointed the exact location of these bursts, that scientists began to solve the puzzle. It seems these huge explosions are caused by the death throws of stars twenty times the size of our Sun, which burn themselves out and explode, creating hypernovae. What then unfolded was a chain of events, which would ultimately point towards some of the most exotic wonders in the Universe: stellar nurseries (where new stars are born) and black holes. Observations show that--instead of fading away, as an explosion might be expected to--radiation continues to emerge from the area of a hypernova. This ongoing emission is characteristic of the process of star birth. Astronomers conclude that the hypernova grows rapidly along with other normal stars in a nursery, but burns out when its contemporaries are still in their infancy. Find a hypernova, and you have also tracked down a part of space where stellar synthesis is underway.

This book gives a very complete lesson on ski prep. It is easy to read and well indexed, serving as a shelf reference when needed. The wording is descriptive enough, but for the true beginner, illustrations are lacking. If you get a chance to observe someone else actually go through the procedure of ski prep, this book will complement your lesson extremely well.

I thought that I knew a point or two after taking the Swix waxing course, but I have now learned that I am still only an amateur when it comes to waxing to perfection.

Complete but lacking.......2001-10-19

It's a good book but it assumes you now the basics of ski waxing. I was trying to obtain a book to learn how to wax skis,and I am still looking. It's worth buying for the advanced procedures covered but you will have to find another book to learn how to "wax skis".

The book is for all people in cross country skiing, not only for trainers, also for competitors, for every serviceman and for all amateurs. Only someone who has such a experiances from his work can write a book with knowledge for all. Or like Peter Hale wrote:" Since few skiers can just walk into a World cup or Olympic waxroom to see what's going on, this book is the next best think." I think that all we working in CC skiing can say just:" Thank you Nat for such a great present!"

It's the best practical book of cross country skiing I've ever read.

The Wax guide........2000-08-24

This is really the only waxing book for serious skiers. Perhaps a bit much for a novice. Given evolving waxing technology the reader will have to also read the latest wax company literature to stay up to date.

Teacher and novelist Lamb was invited to head a writing workshop at York Correctional Institution in 1999. Lamb maintains that there are things we need to know about prison and prisoners: "There are misconceptions to be abandoned, biases to be dropped." However, as heartfelt as his appeal is, nothing speaks more convincingly in this book than the stories themselves.

Those collected here are disturbing and horrific. They reveal, often in graphic detail, the worst kind of abuse: incest, drug addiction, spousal violence, parental neglect, or incompetence. They're also testimony to what social workers and health care professionals have confirmed for years--that those who populate our prisons are often victims first themselves. Thus, the telling of these stories serves as a form of therapy. Never stereotype.......2007-09-11

After reading this book, we have to be reminded that not everyone in prison is a bad person, although all have done bad things. All of the stories were heartwrenching, but one of the most disturbing was Diane Bartholomew's. What she must have endured during her marriage to an physical, mental and sexual abuser. These stories were haunting and very moving. We all have a testimony, but these women shared them with all who would read them. Powerful reading.

Fantastic Book.......2007-08-29

I am an avid reader and belong to a book club so I have read many good books but this was one of the best. I liked the author's previous book, She's Come Undone, so I knew his work when I purchased this one. It was lengthy, 891 pages, but it carried me along until the last page was read. Good writing and good storytelling made this a powerful essay on human strengths and weaknesses.

We need more often to be reminded that people whom we stereoptype/label/classify are actually persons, looking for their lives to be lived long after we (amateur social analysts, all) have made our judgments and assigned others to categories that we can either dismiss or simply feel superior to. Wally Lamb and his hard-working partners have brought us vibrant humanity between book covers. Real-life experiences in skillful language. Nice job!

Great Book Couldn't Put IT Down.......2007-05-15

I really enjoyed this book. It gave a lot of insight into the lives of imprisoned women before there incarceration and afterwards. Changed my outlook on those imprisoned not only by their incarceration but by their lives.

The KGC was a highly secret organization started shortly before the Civil War for purposes of uniting the southern U.S., Mexico and certain nearby lands to exploit the economic resources in the golden circle which was a 1200 mile circle with Havana as the center. This circle had abundance of natural resources and slave or near slave labor. When the CW started the tactics changed, but the eventual goal remained the same --a fascinating study.
