Don't underestimate the role played by loyal employees.......2007-01-17

This is one of the few books I've seen that attempts to link the important role employees play in delivering an experience that builds customer loyalty.

Well known author and loyalty champion Fred Reichheld's early work; The Loyalty Effect, certainly laid the platform that employee, customer and shareholder loyalty are all key ingredients to success, but most authors, include Reichheld himself, have tended to focus on Customer Loyalty as the key driver.

So this book looks at a much under-discussed aspect of loyalty.

Like many business publications today, the real high interest content is found in the first half of the book. In these 100 or so pages, Dennis McCarthy presents a well prepared case for building customer loyalty. His argument draws from many proponents of the topic and he supplements this with good additional data looked at from a new perspective.

All good stuff! His description of `expectation gaps and the intended customer experience' was one of those `ah ha' moments for me, which has instant application value. The book just paid for itself right then and there! I liked the themes around customer loyalty, the Loyalty Deficit Cycle and the commitment needed to deliver on the promise. And I liked the way the argument built to support the importance of having loyal employees to realize this objective.

From then on though, the book goes on to look at ways to engage employees through approaches such as Employee Empowerment, Flexi time and Work-Life Balance. But it really didn't established how treating employees as they would like to be treated, builds loyalty. I get the idea, but I didn't see the causal relationship that leads to employee loyalty and how one would measure it.

The book left me wanting more. Perhaps it was meant to?

Simple, values based and totally practical.......1998-08-24

Far too much resource is spent on building "whizz-bang" customer loyalty programmes that forget the basic premise - customer loyalty is built on the company culture. The Loyalty Link reminds us that customers deal with individual employees and those individuals must provide or exceed the service the customers expect if the company wants to retain them. Those same individuals will only ever provide or exceed that service level if they feel appreciated, supported, and well rewarded. McCarthy challenges the idea of companies who strive for customer satisfaction, stating that there is a wide gap between a "satisfied" customer and a "loyal" customer - one who will spend more with the company, refer others onto the company, cost you far less to service and be more tolerant when you do make a mistake. The Loyalty Link reinforces some management "concepts" (find what really motivates employees, empowering employees, self-managed team etc) which are not new, and takes a bold step further to say there is a real correlation between customer loyalty and employee loyalty and it is totally manageable.

A book I would recommend for all levels of management.

Author Tom Melham and photographer Farrell Grehan collaborate "synergistically" to give the reader a sense of who John Muir was and what drove him to be the preserver of nature that he became. Visiting Muir in his youth in Dunbar Scotland and traveling with his family to their new Wisconsin farm provides an early glimpse of the driving force smoldering within young John Muir to drink in nature for all its worth. With rich text and pictures Melham and Grehan follow Muir's trails across the continent. John's eventual focus on glaciers and the boundless energy and fanatical interest he demonstrated during his sojorns tells of the special man he was. The picture-stories help the reader to understand the greater call of the mountains that made Muir have to labor to the lesser call of writing to pen his passion for sharing and preserving. To have this book still in print and available to the public (I found my copy at a local auction) is a tribute to National Geographic. I recommend that you take up the adventure and read John Muir's America.

A good reference for katas.......2007-01-10

Like other authors, Nagamine starts on his beginnings as a karate man. While interesting I found the photos of katas more beneficial. Whether you come from a different style of karate, or are just forgetful of what the next move is, the photos will help you understand the basic movements a kata takes. However, this book will not teach you how to perform the moves correctly, and they will not be exactly the same as your instructor's.

Indispensible for Matsubayashi-ryu.......2007-01-10

Do not say that you study Matsubayashi-ryu unless you own and study this book. My instructor, a sixth degree black belt, carries it in his duffel bag. I do likewise.

The first section is a good review of the history of the matsubayashi system and of the principles of martial arts. The bulk of the book contains photographs of Nagamine, the author, demonstrating kata. I have been able to learn and practice kata between lessons without waiting to ask my instructor this or that question. Consequently, I have progressed very rapidly.

However, speed of progression is not the point of the book. The point is that karate is and should be practiced as a martial art. If you want to know what that means, you MUST read this book.

A Master's View of His Martial Art.......2007-01-10

Sensei Nagamine shares his heart, as well as his art, in this excellent book. The history of the martial arts development as well as its forms and function are presented in an easy-to-read format. For those who are students of the martial arts, especially Shorin-Ryu, this is an insight into the mindset of one of Okinawa's greatest teachers. It is a "must have" for the traditional student who wants to preserve the original kata forms and legacy of Grandmaste Nagamine.

Excellent book!.......2006-09-25

This book is really indispensable for those who want to study Karate-do seriously, especially Shorin-Ryu practitioners. It includes historical data (Nagamine Sensei was a researcher, himself) along with moral and philosophical aspects of Karate-do, besides the technical aspects. After that, Nagamine Sensei shows the Kata of his branch of Shorin-Ryu, the Matsubayashi (may be some differences with other Shorin-Ryu schools in several Kata) along with some essential explanations. Readers must realise that the only way to learn Kata is training in a Dojo with a Sensei. However, this book is an excellent companion to remember and review aspects of the Kata and -as said- enter the realm of Karate-do as an art and a way of life.

This is the greatest book ever written, in a nutshell, you can read this in 15 minutes.. I keep it around as a reminder of the Four Agreements... great gifts!! I order them several at a time. and give them away quite regularly, everyone loves them.

I absolutely love this little book. This is a summary of the full version but it is a wonderful way of encapsulating all of that in a concise manner. It's a nice one to have close by to read and reread again.

Loved reading the "Four Agreements" Book. These companion cards are a great addition to the book as they are bite sized reminders of the four agreements discussed in the book & they help you stay focused on keeping the four agreements in mind.

There are 48 cards in this deck--- with 12 cards focusing on each of the four agreements. The art work on each card is phenomenally beautiful and the cards are wonderful just to look at for their beauty. I find that if there is an agreement that I am having a difficult time practicing, then I can easily refer to the 12 cards that deal with agreement to help bring that agreement back into focus.

I liked this book even though it was not a sports
book. I think it was because it was an action book and was not that boring to me. I like action books too.

Greg went to Refuge Cove with his son. They had a house there. One day this person came up to their house, went inside and held a knife up to Greg's throat. He told him to give them their house or he will burn it down. Greg did not give up the house so the burglar burned down the house. At the end of the story they got a new house for a bargain.

Some people that would like this book are reader who would like an action book.
