Book Description
"[Our] passion led us down rivers so late in the fall that we had to break through half an inch of ice at the take-out. So early in the spring, that if we capsized, we had to clamber up three feet of ice still clinging to the river banks. We paddled rivers at flood stage, at bony low water, under the moon. We snuck down creeks barely big enough to turn around in, stroked across strings of mirrored lakes vivid with fall colors." -from THREADING THE CURRENT.
Over the past twenty-five years, Alan Kesselheim has spent countless hours paddling along the blue veins of the continent. He has taken trips ranging from afternoon jaunts to year-long journeys, from social outings to white-knuckle adventures, in landscapes stretching from the canyons of the Rio Grande to the shores of Hudson Bay. In Threading the Currents, he explores how his great love of the outdoors and his intense passion for paddling have shaped his life.
In a lively and engaging style, Kesselheim describes the highlights of his paddling trips with friends, family, and lovers. Some, like being stranded naked alongside a river, are humorous. Some, like being stalked for more than a mile by a determined bear, are frightening. Others, like his and his wife's surprise conception of their first child during a fourteen-month trek through the Canadian Arctic, are poignant. But all speak to the heart of things-to love and friendship, birth and death, anger and forgiveness, to the elemental joys and sorrows of life.
Part travelogue, part adventure, part coming-of-age story, Threading the Currents is certain to find a place in the hearts of outdoor adventurers, wilderness enthusiasts, and everyone who has worked to find a place for their passions within the demands of everyday life.
Customer Reviews:
A book of glistening eloquence.......1999-04-05
Among his Baby Boomer contemporaries, Al Kesselheim has distinguished himself as a gifted observer of the natural world, and an expert in reading the nuances of water, (both physically and metaphorically). While his previous books involve single nautical adventures, here he takes us on several. Not all of them, of course, involve life-changing encounters but each has meaning, meaning especially insightful for those of us whotoo often are bound to our offices and daydream of stealing away more time outdoors. Kesselheim'swriting is like the lakes and rivers he navigates--full of strong undercurrents that liehidden just beneath the surface of his narratives; pools and eddies colored with humility and reflection; big, sweeping landscapes that form an intriguing emotional backdrop. Threading the Currents is a fine read.

Definitely Worth the Price ... .......2007-08-04
As with any book, it depends on what you're looking for as to whether it is relevant to you. This one has a catalog of parts and suppliers in the back. It also contains useful tables of data such as cartridge case capacities and the like. In the front, there are several good articles, my favorite of which is an investigation of which handloading techniques bear the most fruit in accuracy. This article and the data tables alone made the purchase worthwhile to me. This book won't teach you how to handload although you will learn some useful knowledge about handloading from it and of course it contains some reference data (not load data though).
If you are looking for a book to teach you handloading, I would recommend two books: The ABC's of Reloading and Lyman's 48th Edition Reloading Handbook. Lyman's has load data, The ABC's does not.
Handloaders will love this........2007-01-11
This is a very thorough, well-written book. Full of worthwhile information.
There are better books out there........2006-10-13
The book is more of a sales catalog then a handloading digest. A lot of the information is from the product sheets you would receive if you purchased the products. Little is provided on actual reloading technique. It would be better to borrow a copy or find one at a library. After you peruse it once you will not need it again.
Good for Beginners.......2005-09-19
This is a good introduction to the world of reloading. Being new, I can't tell what other important facts it's missing yet, but it is a good introduction to the basic concepts. I can't picture myself referring back to this book very often, so it might be better to look to your local library or find a friend that has one lying around. The authors gives a lot of historical data of how reloading progressed, which is unnecessary, but could be interesting to some.

Great Learning Guide for Italian Grammer.......2007-10-17
I'm currently half way through this book, I hack away at it bit by bit in 1hr or 1 1/2hr segments everyday day or so. I'm an Italian destination specialist that is moving to Italia in one year. So of course I must learn the language. I do agree with another poster that on its own you can't learn the language with this guide. I started learning Italian August 2006, with the Rosetta Stone level 1&2, that took me 9 months to complete. It took me so long because I hand wrote and translated each and every lesson in addition to the audio learning software. I finished that in May 2007, I then started re reviewing Rosetta Stone little by little. But I found I couldn't get all the grammer correct. Rosetta Stone dosn't teach grammer all that much. Rosetta Stone has me speaking Italian but getting alot of grammer wrong. After returning from Italia again this August, I decided to futher my studies. I picked up this book along with the complete big yellow grammer book about a month ago or so. This book has really helped me grasp grammer and past/present/future/plural tenses so well and I'm only half way through it! My boss speaks Italian, so we together work over everything I don't understand on my own. But this lesson book is great. I'm so glad on a whim I just bought it! Cause I'm glued to it just about every evening for a little bit. Overall and excellent additional learning source
great for beginners, especially used with an audio course.......2007-08-08
I am using the Pimsleur series to start learning italian. Pimsleur is wonderful for getting you to say things, but it really skimps over grammar explanations, vocabulary, conjugating verbs, etc. This book really excels at filling the gaps. Pimsleur helps you say stuff, this book provides the skeleton that your speaking ability rests on. With exercises after each section, and short chapters that don't intimidate, I can't imagine a better book for a beginner. My advice is to thru the first 15 Pimsleur lessons (the first 30 would be even better) so you get a flavor for what the language sounds like without being worried too much by grammar. If you start with the book too soon your english-reading system will make it hard to pronounce the words correctly; an english speaker will read "grazie" as "grahzee" when it is actually closer to "grah tsee ah" and if you start learning words wrong from a book you'll have trouble correcting that from the tapes or even recognizing they're the same word! But this book is wonderful for explaining the subtleties you'll be wondering about after working thru some of the tapes, and it takes you far past what is presented even in the entire 90-lesson Pimsleur set.
Not as good as I hoped.......2007-07-18
Based on the positive reviews here, I was a little disappointed. What bothers me about this product is that it's not more systematic about teaching grammar and sentence structure. It starts out with a conversation, and then you answer questions based on the conversation. What you end up doing is *deducing* things about sentence structure, rather than learning them directly. What is really disappointing is the treatment of verbs. I see now that Amazon is recommending buying this book with a verb book, and I would say that is right on target! I already have a CD with some basic phrases, and a phrasebook - what I wanted was to start learning the rules of the language, and this includes conjugating verbs. Skimming through this book, the first info on conjugating any verb is not until Unit 4, p. 40, and it is only partial information! There, you will find "The Verb essere (to be): Part I," and it give present idicative for I am, you are and he/she is. The next verbs are not until p. 79, where you learn "it is raining/snowing." Are those really the most crucial verbs to learn? You have to wait until p. 106 to get the other forms of "essere": "we are" and "they are," along with the different present indicative forms of "to have." Why would anyone choose to put together a workbook like that?! Could it have to do with the fact that Barron's publishes both this workbook, and the separate book, "Italian Verb Workbook?" I'm guessing it does! I guess one could argue that a total of $21.70 for both of them, as currently found on Amazon, is not a bad deal. Still, it's irritating to me, because I thought I was buying a product that, while it certainly wouldn't take the place of an Italian class, would at least provide good coverage of verbs, which are essential to learning a language. Certainly, verbs are used in the conversations and exercises, and translated, but all the forms aren't presented together at once so that you can learn them properly until the pages I've indicated. Then, later on and throughout the book, there *are* more verbs. Still, I would have preferred more systematic treatment earlier on.
A caveat: I've only actually worked through a couple of pages of the workbook so far. Except for the frustration of not having better verb coverage, it looks OK. I would recommend the book *only* with one of the verb books sold at Amazon.
Buy This Book.......2007-02-19
In preparation for our one-month, self-conducted tour of Italy which my wife and I took last spring, I completed Danesi's "Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way," completed the first twenty chapters of "Italian Now!," and then finished the latter text after we returned home. "Italian Now!" was especially helpful because it forces you to write out many of the exercises and essays: in other words, it gives you thirty chapters of "hands on" practice to teach you the essentials of Italian language, and I've not seen a better beginning text--but I was glad that I had started with "Fast and Fun Way," otherwise "Italian Now!" may have been a bit too difficult at first. My only negative comments would be that I discovered a number of errors in the answer key and elsewhere in the text and, even though there are review sections at the end of each general section, I would have liked to have had more summary or comprehensive practice exercises that would have pulled everything together better.
Great Italian workbook!.......2007-01-10
I bought this book when I was using the Rosetta Stone program because I got halfway through Italian 1 and could not ask basic questions in Italian. This book was a great supplement. It helped clarify structure and grammar and made it easy to learn. I think it is a good supplement to another learning program that focuses on pronunciation. This book could teach you to read Italian and give the fundamental principles of the language but you need to learn how to speak Italian as well.

if i have a wicked stepmother, where's my prince?.......2007-10-18
this is a fun, predictable book. it's pretty obvious who lucy will end up with and some of her stepmother's antics really aren't believable. there's also a very sudden turnaround in their relationship. lucy goes from hating her stepmother and stepsisters to sort of liking them. it felt like the author was really trying to wrap things up. there is an abundance of art in this book.
Great.......2007-07-16
This book had me hooked from the first sentence. it was like a modern approach to "cinderella". She had problems with her family and her love life. and this book took you through all her ups. and her downs. The plot practically forced me to read it. But in a good way! i would recomend it!
If I Have A Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?.......2007-07-06
I started this book last night and stayed up until almost 2 in the morning reading it. Yes, it's that good.
I love how Lucy starts out as mega uncool and then goes straight to the top in what seems like overnight. With just one comment about basketball, she has the attention of the hottest, most sought after guy in the school who just happens to be big on basketball and the star player. At the same time, she makes two best friend. After that, though her life at home stays horrible, she spends her time gabbing with her friends, going to the A-list parties, shopping for dresses, and kissing her new boyfriend.
But then, on one date, Lucy realizes something isn't right. It seems their relationship is just about touching and basketball. Soon after, she begins having feelings for another guy, but she can't dumb her guy or she'll lose everything she gained, won't she?
This story is fun, unpredictable, and sweet. It really tells the life of the new girl and it's an amazing read. I definitely recommend reading it!
If I Have A Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?.......2007-06-05
As you can probably tell from the title, "If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?" is a Cinderella story- with a twist. Lucy Norton hasn't been having the best year since her dad got remarried and she had to move from California to New York. She has given up on making friends at her new High School, Glen Lake, and her home life isn't any better. With her dad in California finishing up a big case, her evil stepmother Mara, and her two annoying stepsisters,Emma and Amy (a.k.a. the princesses) are in charge. Lucy is forced to live in the unfurnished basement and is often ordered around and ignored even when her dad is home.Things start looking up for Lucy when an inadvertent slip of the tongue catches the attention of the most popular guy in school, Connor Pearson. Soon she is adopted into his crowd and busy with prom details. Meanwhile, she has to deal with her parents and Sam Wolff. Sam is a seemingly cocky and amazingly talented senior in her art class. She tries to befriend him but her first attempts seem useless. Eventually, the problems with her parents are resolved and she realizes Prince Charming isn't all he's cracked up to be. Luckily, she gets a happy ending with an unexpected prince. Although the plot line is predictable,Melissa Kantor, a teacher in New York and author of The Breakup Bible, did a wonderful job. This book makes you believe in fairytales and happily ever afters.
my new Favorite Cinderella Story!.......2007-01-26
"If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's my prince", a current day Cinderella story, is filled with humor and today's problems that teenagers face. This book is so unpredictable you won't believe it! Lucy starts off as the average new kid, in a big school, with no friends but a secret crush. Her mother died but her new stepmother and sisters are there. He dad is always gone to work. Does this remind you of Cinderella? When I was reading this book I was laughing so hard when she told her corny jokes that no one understood, such as: Who is going to win the basket ball game? I think the bears are Lucy answers. Really Lucy is a sports fanatic. I also laughed at how her quantity time with her step mom and dad was furniture shopping.
Some of the problems deal with drugs and drinking at her thirteen year old little sister's party. Other problems are girl problems like what am wearing to prom, and does he really like me? Lucy thinks she loves Conner, but will he be her prince in the end? Let's just say that this is the most unpredictable book I've ever read and love it. The way Melissa Kantor writes pondering thoughts like "Conner Pearson knows who I am, I found myself thinking. He knows my name. Of course, my name was just about the only thing he did know about he, but it was something. After all, what did Prince Charming know about Cinderella besides her shoe size?" Makes you want to keep reading forever.
I hope you enjoy helping Lucy go through all the problems, and laughs in her real life Cinderella story. I know I did.

Once upon a time, in the bubble-gum-snapping, glitter polish-wearing, lip-gloss-applying San Fernando Valley, a gentle girl named Barbie met a feisty fairy named Mab: "Maybe Mab was real. Maybe there really are girls the size of pinkies with hair the color of the darkest red oleander blossoms and skin like the greenish-white underbellies of calla lilies.... But it doesn't matter if Mab is real or imagined, Barbie thought, as long as I can see her." Mab, with her crabby commentary and no-holds-barred opinions, gives Barbie the strength she needs to face the horrors casting a shadow over her life in sunny, shimmering California. How else could Barbie survive her over-perfumed, over-tanned, overbearing stage mother, dragging her daughter to modeling agencies in the gold-plated hope of reliving her younger days as a beauty queen? Or the "cadaver-pale skin" and "fleshy mouth" of Hamilton Waverly, the "crocodile pedophile" photographer who makes Barbie feel "like the doll she had been named for, without even a hole where her mouth was supposed to be"? Mab glimmers and gabs by Barbie's side throughout her teen years as she becomes a successful fashion model, falls in love, and endures all the troubles that come along for the ride--in addition to facing the black secret of her past.
Francesca Lia Block, author of the magical Weetzie Bat books that are collected in Dangerous Angels, and the empowering, punchy Girl Goddess #9, has once again crafted a mystical tale whose ethereal, original language will wrap readers in its gossamer grip. Block carries us to the weeping heart of despair, but would never be so cruel as to leave us there: Barbie gets a new, skyward-gazing name, Selena Moon, and readers get a glimmersome vision of living happily ever after. (Ages 13 and older) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Maybe Mab was real. Maybe not. Maybe Mab was the fury. Maybe she was the courage. Maybe later on she was the sex...
A tiny fairy winging her way through the jasmine-scented L.A. night. A little girl caught in a grown-up glitz-and-glitter world of superstars and supermodels. A too beautiful boy with a secret he can never share...
From the author of Weetzie Bat comes a magical, mesmerizing tale of transformation. This is the story of Barbie Marks, who dreams of being the one behind the Cyclops eye of the camera, not the voiceless one in front of it; who longs to run away to New York City where she can be herself, not some barley flesh-and-blood version of the plastic doll she was named after. It is the story of Griffin Tyler, whose androgynous beauty hides the dark pain he holds inside. And finally it is the story of Mab, a pinkie-sized, magenta-haired, straight-talking fairy, who may or may not be real but who helps Barbie and Griffin uncover the strength beneath the pain, and who teaches that love--like a sparkling web of light spinning around our bodies and our souls--is what can heal even the deepest scars.

Cute but not for the young ones.......2007-08-06
This is a rather short book. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 14. I like the diversity of the book. I found Mab to be actually charming in that typical faery sorta way. This does go into detail in ways that some people might not like. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Too dreamy and vague.......2007-05-25
This book is about a young girl named Barbie blessed (or cursed) with beauty and forced into modeling by her controlling mom, an ex-model herself, living vicariously through her child. When she's 11 she meets Mab, a sarcastic fairy, who almost reluctantly becomes Barbie's friend. During this same time she's molested by a lecherous photographer. Her mother tells her not to cry, that life is full of problems and she had just better learn to deal with them.
Fast forward 5 years and Barbie's a rail thin, jaded model. Mab is still part of her life, encouraging her to have sex which I found bizarre seeing as she's only 16 but maybe I'm getting old . . .
This book was just "eh, so what" for me. I didn't connect with the character and the sparse writing style left me cold. The issues of molestation, teen sex, drugs, homosexuality, etc. seemed to be very glossed over but I guess that couldn't be helped seeing as the book was so short. Overall it wasn't a memorable read despite the dark subject matter.
cute and sweet.......2007-03-17
Nice quick read. Not totally fluff though, so it's a little different than other books in this genre. I'd recomend this book. The cover art is amazing!
Bad book!!.......2007-03-03
After reading good reviews and liking the idea of the story I just couldn't get into this book. I was really excited and was very disappointed! It was vague and just didn't flow. I tried and tried and couldn't get through half the book.
Child's inner strength.......2007-02-28
Barbie's mother always wanted her to be a model, to fulfill the dreams she could never fulfill herself. So it is no real surprise when Barbie ends up at photo shoots, getting head shots done so she will be able to be a famous model. Her mother doesn't seem to realize that Barbie's photographer has molested her. This is the sort of thing that would make a child fall apart completely--but Barbie has Mab to keep her together. Mab is a tiny little fairy, a tempermental, moody little thing who tells Barbie she is a queen. Mab hates Barbie's mother and says all of the things about her Barbie wishes she were strong enough to say.
Even when Barbie grows into adulthood, Mab is still there for her. Barbie becomes a famous model and has hurtful relationship after hurtful relationship. Her mother is still running the show. Then Barbie meets a wonderful guy who really seems to like her and want to take care of her. She also meets up with a boy she recognizes from years ago, a boy who was photographed by the same man Barbie was photographed by as a child. The boy seems to have the same pain inside as Barbie has. Can she help him? Can tiny Mab solve everyone's problems?
Although these characters went through a great deal, I liked where they were at the end of the story. They seem to have gotten things worked out for themselves, and I had hope for their futures. I loved the descriptions, especially the way the cities were compared to people. I didn't like the leap in the story from Barbie's childhood to her adulthood, with nothing in between. And I found it hard to like a lot of the characters a lot of the time.
