Fantastic source of information for productivity management.......1997-08-22

This book contains about 100 texts written by different people, with different profiles and recognized knowledge, experience and contributions in productivity management, like Peter Drucker, J. M. Juran, Jay Forrester, A. V. Feigenbaum, etc. The editors were able to put together a lot of information in a coherent way, that is easy and pleasant to consult and read.

The topics covered include the importance of productivity measurement and management, basic concepts, specific methods for different sectors (manufacturing, service, staff, profit centers, government, nonprofit), feedback and information system, sustainability and employee involvement.

Handbooks are often boring and unpleasant to read. This is an exception, with short texts and good graphic presentation. Of course this means that most information has an introductory charater, but many references are given to direct the reader to deeper studies.

I have used this handbook for some time before I decided to write this, and my objective is to share with others the satisfaction I have obtained from this excellent reference

An excellent productivity guide.......1997-07-24

There are no words to describe this book!!!. It covers every aspect regarding productivity improvement. It has lots of articles written by various professionals, and it explains in a simple way how to improve productivity, whatever it is services, production, etc. A must have for engineers!!!

The Survival Bible.......2005-08-01

If you are a federal organization and want to plan an A76 survival strategy this is a must read book, bar none. Any federal intern who works in EEO or Civil Rights, Human Resources, Manpower or Resource Management should be compelled to read this book. The book is not long and thus gets to the point very quickly. This is not one of those typical federal books chucked full of pointless pompous pronouncements about charts with the moving parts or bold new world.. again, this book is more of a work book.

Nothing to read.......2003-07-25

It looks like ISO 14001 requirements + ISO 14001 comments + a few words of own opinion + some procedures from imaginary company (It seems they have never been at work). So If you have visited any ISO 14001 course, you don't need this book.

I used this book for an environmental safety class in a graduate program. I was not familiar with this discipline before this class. In the first chapter the concept is layed out, however it was not an easy reader. Too many bullets and questions. It seemed to apply more for the safety manager already employed. The ideas were a little hard to grasp as a student without a lot of experience. The OSHA website helped me to get a grip on the ideas.

This straightforward book offers realistic insight into the hard work of farm life.

Fricke's sensitive descriptions of MidMissouri countryside are reminiscent for me. A city girl, I taught a year in a one-room rural school just across the river from the setting of the book. Much later, my husband, once a farm boy from the same county, became an ag professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He initiated a series of Feminine Farrowing Schools. In brief sessions, ag instructors trained women to work with piglets as the author had to learn on her own -- enduring plenty of criticism from her demanding husband.

Why listen to this amateur, when you can learn from the best?.......2007-06-13

With so many excellent books and DVD series on grappling available today, I do not think anyone should even consider buying this book.

The author, Mark Hatmaker, is a complete unknown in the grappling and mixed martial arts world. He never (never!) competed in MMA, and even he on his website does not claim to have won (or, for that matter, participated in) any grappling tournaments. Some people are better at teaching than competing, but they at least try to compete. Mark does not try to compete... and he does not have any successful students either. I suppose, those who can't do and can't teach either ... write books instead.

This book can easily show why Hatmaker hasn't been successful - he knows "moves", but he does not really know the grappling basics that would allow him to execute these moves against a fully resisting opponent. The picture on the front cover (the one you probably see on the top of this page), could be an illustration to "Common positioning mistakes on the white belt level". The most obvious tell is that his right leg is way too loose - the heel needs to be right up against the opponents body, squeezing it for control. It is extremely important to control your opponent in a No-GI match, since people get very slippery. No technical grappler of note would ever sit like that. I am not even talking about the fact that his left leg is completely out of position (was it an attempt to show the grimacing face of his opponent?) and that his right hand appears to have slipped off his bicep (which it was supposed to cup).

If you are not completely convinced, look at the photo on the back - Mark pays a lot of attention to his hand positioning... while being *completely* out of position himself, with his legs thrown loosely around his opponent, he is sitting away, and his chest is barely touching the opponents shoulder. This is so far away from the tight control of the opponent's body he should be showing, it is nothing short of amazing that Mark actually considered teaching grappling.

My advice - do not even look at this book, it will do you more harm than good.

Great Book for the Intermediate to Advanced.......2005-09-16

Let me just say this..... I really like this book.

It doesn't just pick up where the last one left off. It takes the game to a whole new place. The crux of this book for me, was the submission chains.

Hatmaker explains how to combined techniques into chains to keep the pressure on. Takedowns to controls, controls to submissions, subs to ther subs. Basically, he teaches you some chains and how to create your own.

This is a subject Hatmaker is well versed in. He is a more intellectual type than many of the naturally gifted World Champion competitors you can get instructionals from.

Hatmaker knows what works. And he knows what works for you and me, not Roger Gracie. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade my Jiu Jitsu in for the world. However, these books have given me a perspective that has helped me create my own style and helped me greatly in BJJ, Judo, Sub Grappling and MMA.

not for beginners.......2005-07-14

a alll around good but don't let this be your first book on submissions, its not geared towards beginners and will cause confuion

Not a useful book.......2005-02-09

Even though this book is inexpensive, I was very disappointed. Most of the moves are not true submissions. The neck cranks and chokes that are shown don't seem like they would work even on the untrained. The straight and bent armlock are covered, but nothing you haven't seen before. Bottom line: this book is cheap, but it will just take up space and collect dust in your apartment.

Solid Submission text.......2004-07-24

This text adds to what was in the first book in that it shows more submissions in different positions.

It has an intro that gives some training tips.

The pictures and text were good enough for someone with experience. I think any physical activity requires a coach to learn it, so needless to say, this book should be read along with real training to get the most out of it.

The only thing that bugged ME about this text was its lack of leg locks. All the leg locks here were just variations of the heel hook.

Title may be misleading.......2007-07-25

There are two common definitions of the word "acoustics." The most general is "an area of physics dealing with sound and sound waves" and the second is "the qualities of a room that determine audibility and fidelity of sound in it." This book is a very good reference for the latter, but if you're looking for the former, look elsewhere. Also, I'm not sure I would describe it as a Handbook, but rather as a reference text.

It is good for what it does cover and is relatively easy to read.

A book for the advnaced.......2007-07-09

A great book, but can be too advanced for some. A lot of physics is included - which is great - but perhaps some previous knowledge or some side reading is a good idea.

Good book.......2007-05-11

It is nice REFERENCE book for practicing sound engineer. If you in a process of setting up your home studio and need quick and meaningful start get Acoustics for producer and musician, includes SoundsAcademy Certification and it will take you inside the subject fast and straight to the point.

This book addresses room acoustics and in this regard is superb reference but many music related aspects of acoustics aren't there. For room acoustics treatment this book is very useful though.

A recording studio masterpiece.......2006-04-27

OK, so this does not cover ALL acoustincs. If one is interested in recording or playback acoustics, this is THE BEST. As an engineer and producer who has been involved in the construction of a dozen studios, I have the clients and architects read this before we start hard design parameters. For lay listeners, the chances are good your audio budget is better spent on acoustic treatment rather than a more exotic cable. For all of the above, this book will explain the what, why and how to get results. For professionals, it explains how to obtain designable results. I find it an easy read, and I refer to it occasionally, particularly when discussing room acoustics with neophyte "sound men" and audio engineers. I'd read it if I were you.

Have you got time?.......2006-03-27

Despite its title, this book should better be called Master Handbook of Room Acoustics, as it is primarily and almost solely dedicated to the acoustics of enclosed rooms. With its over 600 pages you will need a large hand, and plenty of time to read. But the information you gather when reading the main text, could have been presented in less than half the number of pages. Despite - or is it because - the abundance of words and excursions into anecdotes, the explanations are sometimes missing the clue. The last few chapters have been written by others authors, and are more to the point. Besides, these co-authors use the SI system, while the main text is using American units. A bit out of time, I would say.

Title doesn't properly reflect subject matter.......2004-11-23

Not that this is really a bad book, maybe a little dated, but the title really doesn't reflect the subject matter. This book deals more with the math and science (formulas and equations) behind "live" studio recording philosophies/practices than it does 'Audio' "PRODUCTION". There is some useful information for someone wanting to design their own multi-faceted video and audio recording studio (in the professional realm), but hardly anything geared towards home studio applications. Part of the reason I bought this book was because I saw it had a section on acoustics, and I am currently trying to read up on everything I can about acoustically treating my home studio. The "acoustics" chapter of this book dealt almost entirely with wind noise in air ducts and tonal vibrations due to large blower motors (that you might encounter in a large studio facility).

If you are looking for a more in-depth disection of the math behind condenser mics and line-signal paths, etc., then this is the book for you. If you are looking for real-world applications for the common "Home Studio" then I would suggest another read.

Save the Chickens!.......2000-07-20

I picked up this book on a whim after I saw the movie "Chicken Run." I am glad I saw the film before I read the book, otherwise it might not have made much sense. But since I knew what the movie was about, the book was very funny. It was not really so much for kids as adults, though I guess a smart kid could get something from it. It took the characters from the movie and made them even more "real." The best parts were the ones about the packrats and Mrs. Tweedy...they were my favorite charaters in the book. All in all a good thing for fans of Nick Park and "Chicken Run."

Charming Book Based on the Even More Charming Film!.......2000-07-09

This "Chicken Run" book -- a parody of the inspirational "Chicken Soup" series -- features several humorous stories "written" by the characters in the movie "Chicken Run." The book is humorous, but perhaps a little too sophisticated for kids. In addition, don't even think about trying to read it unless you have seen the film. Otherwise, it is nearly impossible to understand. On the whole, however, a charming and quick read that is suitable for intelligent children and adults.
