Book Description

An insider's guide to understanding and eliminating accounting fraud
How do these high-profile accounting scandals occur and what could have been done to prevent them. Hidden Financial Risk fills that void by examining methods for off balance sheet accounting, with a particular emphasis on special purpose entities (SPE), the accounting ruse of choice at Enron and other beleaguered companies. J. Edward Ketz identifies the incentives for managers to deceive investors and creditors about financial risk and also shows investors how to protect their investments in a world filled with accounting and auditing frauds.
J. Edward Ketz, PhD (State College, PA) is MBA Faculty Director and Associate Professor of Accounting at Penn State's Smeal College of Business. He has been cited in the press nearly 300 times since Enron's bankruptcy, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.. He has a regular column in Accounting Today.

4 out of 5 stars Competent analysis of off balance sheet accounting.......2005-10-26

An expert describes some the main devices used to distort financial information for public consumption, focusing on those which hide debt. I found it both informative and highly readable. Some background in business accounting is helpful but not necessary for the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Accounting for the Investor.......2003-08-03

While experts wring hands and say "mistakes were made," this book gives average investors the "how to" in order to make sense of annual reports and balance sheets. It seems to blow the lid off of the various methods that managers used to hide bad debt and shaking investments. Undoubtly, good for most investors who want to avoid a repeat of Enron. It also offers a pretty explanation of why major accounting and auditing firms can't be trusted. At last, a book that allows investors to keep their investments and earn money--instead of CEOs and corporate executives. Favorite Chapter: How to Hide Debt with Pension Accounting.

    Book Description

The objective of Off-Balance Sheet Activities is to gain insights into, and propose meaningful solutions to, those issues raised by the current proliferation of off-balance sheet transactions. The book has its origins in a New York University conference that focused on this topic. Jointly undertaken by the Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research and New York University's Salomon Center for the study of Financial Institutions at the Stern School of Business, the conference brought together academic researchers and practitioners in the field of accounting and finance to address the issues with the broad-mindedness requisite of a group whose approaches to solutions are as different from each other as their respectively theoretical and applied approaches to the disciplines of finance and accounting. The essays are divided into two sections. The first covers issues surrounding OBS activities and banking and begins with a brief introduction that places the essays into context. OBS activities and the underinvestment problem, whether loan sales are really OBS, and money demand and OBS liquidity are examined in detail. Section two, which also begins with a brief introduction, focuses on issues of securitized assets and financing. A report on recognition and measurement issues in accounting for securitized assets is followed by three separate discussion essays. Other subjects covered include contract theoretic analysis of OBS financing, the use of OBS financing to circumvent financial covenant restrictions, and debt contracting and financial contracting. The latter two contributions are also followed by discussion essays. This unique collection of papers will prove to be an interesting and valuable tool for accounting and finance professionals as well as for academics involved in these fields. It will also be an important addition to public, college, and university libraries.

                Description:
By studying the Hong Kong banking industry, the objective of this study is to examine the role of information complementarity and market competition in governing the diffusion of off-balance-sheet (OBS) financial innovations. Specifically, two OBS financial innovations are information complementary if the adoption of one lowers the uncertainty of adopting another. In addition, market competition may speed up the diffusion of OBS financial innovations because competitive firms are able to capture the full profit potential from successful innovations. A simultaneous equation model is devised to estimate the impacts of information complementarity, market competition, and a number of other factors on the diffusion of OBS financial innovations. Results of estimation suggest that information complementarity and market competition are the primary driving forces behind the diffusion process.

                    Book Description

A provocative and compelling way to look at the future world of work
What will work be like in the future? Futurists often try to answer this question by looking at how the Internet and technology have changed our lives, but in The Internet Weather, James Moore asserts it's far more useful-and even essential-to view the future by examining those things that don't change: the human desire for time, privacy, trust, and truth. Understanding this, Moore says, can help managers change the way they manage, and, in doing so, retain employees and improve their businesses. In this riveting book, Moore shares insights gleaned from his consulting career and imparts advice he has given clients to help them change their behavior and improve business and personal performance. He also questions assumptions about the New Economy and offers predictions about the future of work to help managers see where to focus their energy and attention.

                    5 out of 5 stars Compelling.......2002-03-12

This is a delightful book: it is smart but easy to read. The author burns images and analogies into your mind that are unforgetable. In particular, I cannot forget his treatment of time and privacy. These are the best descriptions of the problems of privacy in the internet and in the compression of time that I have ever read. Overall, this book makes you think but flows easily and conversationally. He is dealing with big issues in an accessible way.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2002-02-25

What a great book. This is fun book that also makes your think. Mr. Moore has an easy, conversational style that is both engaging yet provocative. I will never think about time, truth, trust and privacy in the same way again....I learned a lot

                    5 out of 5 stars Business Truths.......2002-02-25

Mr. Moore provides a superb framework for understanding how to create competitive advantage in a time of unrelenting pressure on our time. As an E-commerce manager, I found myself challenging my current priorities against "the verities of time, truth, trust, and privacy." This book is incredibly thought provoking.

                    4 out of 5 stars Provocative.......2002-02-19

This book is interesting, well-written, provocative . . . and ultimately, disturbing. Its immediate relevance is to managers in businesses relying on information technology, but the trickle down effect will affect many.

                      Book Description

U.S. agencies having responsibility in foreign assistance programs long have recognized the need for a handbook on horticultural crops in the Tropics. Information on the subject may be found in various scientific textbooks, treatises and papers. It is to fill the need for consolidated information in ready reference form that this Handbook on Tropical and Subtropical Horticulture is issued by the Agency for International Development in consultation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Based upon an extensive survey of available literature, this manual is designed for the use of US. A.I.D. technicians and contract personnel, and for Peace Corps volunteers engaged in rural development. It is written in layman's language so that it may be understood by the non-specialist who yet is called upon to work with farm families in solving their agricultural problems. Nevertheless, research workers and students also will find it of value because of its up to date and extensive bibliography. It also serves as reference and guide for teaching courses.

In addition to U.S. A.I.D. and Peace Corps personnel, there are two other groups to whom this Handbook can be of great help. The one group is composed of missionaries living with rural people and concerned with agricultural education in the Tropics. Often lacking an agricultural background, they must search for practical information on tropical crops to help local farmers increase agricultural productivity. In the other group are employees of large agricultural companies. Some of these are foreign, others are local technicians. Perhaps their first aim is to promote the use of a specific agricultural chemical, for example, but since they have close contact with farmers, they are called upon often to answer questions pertaining to other phases of agriculture.

There has been a dearth of agricultural research people in the Tropics and a shortage of funds for basic and applied research. In general the quality of research work has been good, but quantity and coverage are limited. The Handbook indicates in the first chapter those fields of endeavor where work is needed immediately. Major fruit, nut and tree crops are discussed in the second chapter with emphasis on such important points as spacing, pruning, fertilizing, budding, and disease and insect control. A few Temperate Zone fruits are included to stress that they can be grown only at higher elevations in the Tropics, due to chilling requirements. Crops are listed alphabetically and scientific names are given for reference purposes.

The Handbook continues with a description of all major vegetable crops. Information is presented on seed storage, vegetable varieties, fertilizer recommendations, plant spacings, temperature requirements, soil and cultivation. Major diseases with their control are presented in a table for easy reference.

Herbicides are being used extensively in temperate regions for weed control. They will come into more use in the Tropics in the future, especially if labor costs continue to increase. Accordingly, a table lists recommended herbicides for each crop. Likewise, a table is presented to indicate major insects and how they can be controlled. Pictures are included for identification purposes.

                            Book Description

It is well known that stellar winds are variable, and the fluctuations are often cyclical in nature. This property seems to be shared by the winds of cool and hot stars, even though their outflows are driven by fundamentally different physical mechanisms. Since very similar models have been proposed to explain the cyclical wind variations observed in a wide variety of stars, the time was ripe for astrophysicists from many different sub-disciplines to present the state of the art in a concise form. The proceedings will provide a useful, up-to-date overview of the observations, interpretation, and modelling of the time-dependent mass outflows from all sorts of stars.

                              Book Description

The ultimate guidebook to fishing one of the world's most beautiful backcountry spots.

Fishing Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is not merely a reference guide. It showcases the uniqueness of Alaska while emphasizing the universal passions that make the sport of fishing so compelling. With stories and anecdotes to complement the detailed specifics on stream access, timing, tactics, and equipment, this fascinating book will appeal not only to those planning a visit but to all those who have a love of fishing and only dream of going.

Atcheson provides information on both fly fishing and conventional spin casting in both fresh and salt water. He covers every style of fishing—from jigging for giant halibut off the coast, to float tubing for grayling and monster rainbow trout on quiet mountain lakes, to pursuing all the species of salmon that run up the streams of the Kenai Peninsula to spawn. He supplies detailed information on the well known "combat zones" that are so renowned for their large salmon and trout that anglers line up shoulder to shoulder in their pursuit. In addition, there's hard-to-find information on those out-of-the-way, beautiful stretches of water where one can still enjoy the beauty and the blessed solitude of the Alaskan wilderness. 30 black and white photographs, 5 illustrations, 10 maps, index.

                              • The only book dedicated to fishing this region—one of the fishing world's most fantasized-about venues.
                              • Detailed information on stream access that allows an angler to fish Alaska without spending thousands of dollars on lodging and guided fishing.
                              • Specific information on the timing of the different runs of salmon and trout in each body of water.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for planning a trip to Alaska for fishing.......2006-08-31

I think this book would be helpful in planning a trip to Alaska to fish. After reading about the crowds fishing from the roadsides I believe I will hire a guide and a boat for my trip. Without reading about it I would probably have been disapointed in having to do "Combat Fishing" at the road crossings.

5 out of 5 stars Fishing Kenai Peninsula.......2006-02-02

Intend to spend a week fishing the Kenai this Summer. This book gives me the information I wanted to wander on my own and feel that I will still catch fish. Well organized both in terms of fish to expect, but also well broken down by areas. The author provides sufficient information on those fishing Alaska for the first time to feel relatively comfortable that they will be prepared with the proper equipment and knowledge to have a successful trip.

5 out of 5 stars A True must for Kenai Area Fishermen.......2005-01-07

If there ever was a perfect recipe for an area fishing guide, this is it. Beautiful photos, great maps, fantastic stories that bring the areas alive and just plain great advice. Atcheson, has created the mold that I wish others would follow for the other states and regions I fish. He covers the whole gamut of the Kenai Peninsula, not exhaustively, but by picking a handful of representative locations, fishing styles and target species. Then he gives away his fishing secrets like an old and trusted fishing buddy. In fact in his intro he says the book's first objective is to tell you where to fish. He claims to do this to improve his fishing Kharma, and I hope it is working.

He doesn't spell out exactly what hole to drop which lure into, but he does give some great suggestions based on fishing, scenery, and wilderness experience. And in an area where 90 percent of the fishermen are going to 10 percent of the fishing areas, he gives some great alternatives to being shoulder to shoulder on the Russian or lining the Kenai. He does cover those areas well, but he suggests other options like hiking up to the Russian Lakes and fishing their outlets for trout.

Whether you are a tourist planning a trip to the Kenai or a resident of South Central Alaska, you should get this book. It has a lot of great area experiences that get overlooked in the shadow of the Kenai, the Russian and the saltwater charter fishing options. Try one of his hike in float tube lakes some time.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-08-11

I picked up a copy of this book when I was on vacation in Alaska fishing the Kenai. First off, the author is an execellent outdoors writer and really makes you wish you were there. As far as fishing info, the book gives a great overview of the most productive techniques (which are used by practically every guide in the area) used to catch each type of salmon and trout in the area. It gives good information about all the local rivers, streams, and lakes, and most importantly timing information on salmon runs and most productive trout periods. The first section on Lake Fishing is a bit more geared toward local anglers with access to a canoe, but I would definately recommend this book for anyone planning a fishing trip to the Kenai Peninsula.

5 out of 5 stars More than an excellent & useable guidebook--its a great read.......2003-01-26

I read the book while on vacation in Mexico and found myself thirsting for the clean waters of Alaska. The author is obviously a devout fisherman. Woven throughout the book are comments, observations and short essays that address the intangable elements of fishing that can result in a love of the sport. Atcheson has not forgotten what the essence of fishing is all about and he can be downright poetic at times. This is not to imply that important planning details and valuable local knowledge is glossed over. On the contrary, Atcheson hits all the bases and offers many fishing techniques, super maps, and detailed information on many quiet out of the way trout and salmon hang-outs and the large rivers. This book is educational and packed with advice and seasonal information that is applicable and unique to fishing in Alaska. A really good book that delivers years of local knowledge and a better understanding of life below the surface.

The reason there are no good books on comedy is because it is an inherently impossible field to "break down" and "explain." These guys do an okay job of relaying the history of comedy, but they do nothing to actually explain anything.

Besides that fundamental flaw, these guys are simply too old and the book reads like my grandfather's "1001 Polish Jokes." This advice would have been pretty helpful is honing your standup routine for Ed Sullivan but in 2007 it just seems pathetic and lame.

3 out of 5 stars Dated, but useful.......2007-09-13

If you can get this book cheap, then I would recommend it simply for the fundamentals. However, it is a painful book to read; it is very old (1987) and, ahem, in some ways politically incorrect (but then again, everyone is so damn sensitive these days). I first read this book in 1989 - and it was useful. I picked it up again this year (2007) and realized two great lessons: 1) That some forms of comedy are classic and will always work. 2) That times change and humor does as well ... what might have worked for you two years ago may need to be reworked and changed around.

                              5 out of 5 stars Well done!!!.......2007-07-26

This is a good book for anyone who wants to learn methods and concepts on comedy writing, or even how to construct material/jokes for their own personal life. This book is aimed toward people going into stand-up or comedy writing, but it is also very useful for people who just want to broaden their sense of humor. This book is broken down into different concepts and joke types, and each joke type is explained on how it is constructed. This book also has exercises on how to observe things differently, particularly how to "find the funny" in everyday things, and to take these observations and turn them into tools for laughter. I recommend this book to anyone entering the field of comedy, and also to people who would just like to expand their sense of humor. There are also some very good jokes inside! Very enjoyable read!

5 out of 5 stars What other comedy books don't tell you.......2007-07-13

And it's not because they are withholding the information either!

Breaking down comedy into a scientific method is not an easy process. PLUS, there's a lot more to it than just understanding the core structure of comedy. With that being said, I think you'll find a lot of gems in this book that will make you funnier in your every day life.

Not just for writing comedy, this book will help you be funnier in general in your interactions with your friends and co-workers.

A lot of it deal with content. As this book was written for Comedy WRITING, it was written in mind that you cannot use your personality, way of acting as a shtick. So it relies heavily on the CONTENT... it's very potent, because communication is said to be over 90% body language.

If this is true, and you learn (and you can) to be funny with the remaining 10%, IMAGINE... how funny you could be if you started working on your general ating shticks and personas.

I've used this book to see how I could use it in my every day to be more interesting in general I think it will serve you well if that's what you're looking for.

4 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL FOR ACTORS.......2007-03-09

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK OVERALL. AS AN ACTOR I HAVE FOUND THE TECHNIQUES HELPFUL FOR MY ACTING AND SCREENWRITING AS WELL. YOU REALLY NEED TO BE PATIENT WITH THIS BOOK AS IT IS LONG-WINDED AT TIMES. IT'S QUITE THROUGH THOUGH AND DOING THE LITTLE HOMEWORK EXERCISES IS IMPORTANT. THE FUDAMENTAL CONCEPTS ARE HERE AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES, IF THERE WILL BE ON.

5 out of 5 stars Tasso of Tarpon Springs.......2003-03-03

What a great book. All ages can enjoy this lively story. Each chapter builds the suspense of the story and you won't want to put it down. The history that was portrayed was very educational and helped give a better understanding of the times that Tasso lived. The Tarpon Springs community in Florida shouls be very proud of this book. The vocabulary is so descriptive you can easily imagine walking with Tasso and Willie. I highly reccommend this book for fun and learning. Wish the author would write more, a series would be fun!!

someone cause of their height and color. But it also show as much kindness as posible to make friends and shows just because someone is new never mistreat them for something they aren't or you think they are give them a chance. And treat people with the highest respect. And never lie or misjudge them because most of the time you can tell so bekind.

Preachy, dull, AND stupid is a deadly comibnation. AN ALIEN SPRING is designed to teach the kids a lesson about life, supposedly using an exciting science fiction format.

In the opening scene, a corn field burns to the ground in the night. Then there's the new kid in school, Edward, who people think is a weird alien. A wave a illness hits the town, and bofore you know it, the townspeople are off to play "lynch the stranger". But it all comes out O. K., because Mark, our hero, trusts his feelings, and helps Edward and his brother escape.

The writing is crashingly dull -- primer-like simple sentences, one after another.

                              And the stupidity abounds...

Mark is supposed to be on the basketball team. But he never goes to practice, never has a game, and basketball season should have been over for several months when the story takes place. He's also supposed to be the handsomest boy in the school. But when the story starts he doesn't have a girlfriend, and hadn't even thought about going to the prom. Mark's Dad is supposed to be unemployed becasue nobody will give his a job after his "nervous breakdown". But at a critical point in the plot, somebody loans him a helicopter. He's too crazy to get a job selling insurance, but he can borrow a helicopter?

Sorry, but this is one of those "let's teach the kiddies a lesson" that got shoe-horned into the bare threads of an attempted plot. There's no attempt to resolve anything -- we never learn if Edward and his brother really are aliens, or just "strangers with ways different from ours".

And if you know anything about life in the country, which the author obviously doesn't, you are put off right from the first when you realize that the termpurature required to burn down a field of green spring corn would be so great that the entire area would be set ablaze.

I liked this book, because there were a lot of the adventures and real life. This book was pretty good, but I like romance stories better than mystery. I think this book is more for teenagers, because the characters are young students.
This book was about two boys. The main characters were Edward and Mark. Edward was a new student in school and no one like him, because he was strange. But Mark was different, he was trying to make friendship with Edward, because he knew how it is like to be alone.
I recomend this book for kids who like adventures and mystery.

I think that this book was very interesting, because it has many secrets that I wanted to know. In every chapter something really interesting happens and you really want to know what is going to happen next and you want to read this book foward. This book teach us a lot of things what is very important to understand, that we could learn from our mistakes and don't repeat them again and again. The very important life lesson that we learn from this book is that "you don't have to be rich to be happy" (Marks mother). I liked that book because, I liked the events that had happen in this story. I very wanted to know why this boy Edward couldn't talk and is he an alien or not? Every body in Marnard and in school were very afraid of Edward. I liked how the book was typed, because it was easy to read. I think that the mystery books are my favorite and I enjoyed this book very much.
