Quite enjoyable.......2000-06-25
I got this book some time ago when first getting into the subject of astronomy and found it to be a very good book. It isn't your simple answer type dictionary. It covers in detail the subject in which you are reading on. It gives the reader a good base to start on astronomy.
The only drawback I found is that it isn't a dictionary that covers all the terms used in astronomy.

Written with great authority........2007-05-11
The list of contributors to this book reads like a "Who's Who" of the world of Botanical Sciences. This is not, however, one of those stuffy books which are so hard to understand by anyone with less than a PhD to their name. Certainly not! This is a book for those with an interest in the Rainforests of the world (which should be all of us!) and is written in a variety of styles - each of which will allow expert and layman alike to appreciate the various messages which are here to be learned.
Packed with some of the most exciting photography I have seen in a long time (I especially liked the picture of the Giant Fruit Bat in flight), this is a book which is so expertly put together, I didn't find so much as a minor fault anywhere. For those readers who (like me) do not fully understand and appreciate the overall subject matter, the book commences with an excellent overview, which explains the Rainforest exactly as it should be explained. Then, having so skilfully set the underlying scene, each different contributor adds their own particular expertise on different aspects of the Rainforest until, segment by segment, we are presented with a complete understanding "and" appreciation, of what is probably the most important habitat on earth.
Rainforests of the world is a large subject which, in this case, is professionally and cleverly described and I congratulate the team on an excellent authoritative work.

Extraordinary photography--concise information.......1999-10-17
I am a teacher building an Ecology unit around Rainforests--I have checked out 32 library books to aid my students in their research. This title is definately the stand out!!!
This book is both an artistic and a literary masterpiece........1999-04-01
Not only will the astounding photographs enchant the reader but the text will also provide him with a collection of important information. The pictures will captivate the reader and further serve to impact oneself upon learning of the daily destruction of the animals and plants behind the images. The information of the text is well delivered and insightful and the photographs are a must see.
Highly recommended; as beautiful as it is informative.......1997-01-29
The photographs in this book have the power to transport you to the very lands it depicts; the rainforests come alive. These visual reminders only heighten the impact of the horrible statistics that detail the daily destruction of the world's rainforests

Book Description
Every week, hundreds of thousands of Northern Californians tune into Bay Area Backroads-the highest-rated local TV program in the San Francisco Bay Area-for fresh ideas on day trips, weekend getaways, and other local adventures. This portable deck of 50 fun outings, based on the successful Bay Area Backroads book by host Doug McConnell, makes it easy for native Californians or tourists to jump in the car, pick a card, and discover the road less traveled.
Customer Reviews:
Playing cards; not a book!.......2007-08-04
I thought this was a book until I received it in the mail. It's 50 "playing cards"; stiff paper looseleaf cards. I would have preferred a book and will have to be more careful next time I purchase from Amazon.com.
Free AAA Guide Book Better!.......2007-02-09
I love watching the Bay Area Backroads TV show. I thought the card deck would be as advertised, toss in your glove compartment and off you go!There are lots of cards of individual landmarks to visit and one fold out card with a very simple map, but you will still need a real map, lodging book and a restaurant guide to make a nice trip out of any one of the destination cards. I think I will stick to cutting the weekend trip guides out of Sunset and Via magazines. I was dissapointed with the card set.

The Definitive, Completely Up-to-Date Guide to Planning a Jewish Wedding
Since its original publication in 1986, The New Jewish Wedding has become required reading, assigned to engaged couples by Conservative, Reform, and Reconstruc-tionist rabbis alike. In this new revision, Anita Diamant, one of the most respected writers of guides to Jewish life, continues to offer step-by-step guidance to planning the ceremony and the party that follows -- from hiring a rabbi and wording the invitation to organizing a processional and hiring a caterer. She also includes:
- A new chapter focusing on converts, non-Jews, and same-sex couples
- Essential Web sites
- All new art, with examples of ketubot, invitations, and other wedding paraphernalia
- New poems and new translations of the seven wedding blessings
Complete, authoritative, and indispensable, The New Jewish Wedding is a must-have resource for anyone who wants a wedding that combines spiritual meaning and joyous celebration.
Customer Reviews:
A dissent from other reviews.......2006-12-20
My fiance and I bought this book at the suggestion of the rabbi who was performing our ceremony. He was raised conservative and I was raised reform but at the time of our marriage was not relgious at all. We both thought it a good idea to check out the book, mainly because the rabbi (conservative) recommended it. In particular, I was interested in learning a bit more to blend in with my now-husband's family.
I think the problem with the book is that it was amazingly condescending. Perhaps for people with absolutely no knowledge of Judiaism it wouldn't have been so. However, to me it oversimplified many concepts, seem to claim there was only "one right way" to have a Jewish wedding in some respects, and left out the key information we were looking for -- namely the appropriate processional and recessional formations for a couple without significant family issues or discord.
My suggest about this book would be to purchase only if you have little or no prior knowledge of Judiasm or Jewish weddings. Otherwise, it really did not go past the information we received from our Rabbi and our own personal knowledge.
She likes it, so it must be good.......2005-12-30
I got this book for my fiance on the recommendation of my Rabbi. She loves it.
This is indeed THE book to get.......2004-05-19
My fiance and I were looking for a book to explain Jewish wedding laws and customs. We bought a few different books, and I think this was by far the best.
I particularly liked its clarity and organization. While other books bombard you with random Hebrew and Yiddish terms (sometimes translating them into English and leaving out the original language), this book takes time to explain them. It distinguishes which Jewish wedding practices are law and which are custom. It talks about both Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions and makes it fairly clear which traditions are specific to one ethnicity and which are more universal. It addresses a number of mainstream American wedding practices (such as rehearsal dinners) that are NOT typically a part of Jewish weddings. And it educates in a way that makes me feel like I have a grip on the information, rather than throwing out pieces of information that make me go "Huh? What's up with that?"
There is a reason rabbis recommend this book. If you have any interest in learning about Jewish weddings, especially if you want to incorporate Yiddishkeit into your own wedding, this is the book to get.
Excellent resource ! My fiance has already read it twice!.......2003-03-14
I originally bought this book from amazon when I first got engaged. My fiance and I are both jewish and have been to many many jewish weddings, but I wanted to learn more. So, I found this book because of all the glowing reviews! And I would like to add another one!
As I said in the title, I read it once and since I kept telling my fiance little tidbits that I didn't know or things that were interesting, he asked to borrow the book. After his first reading he said that he wanted to review certain sections, highlight them and then pass this book onto his mother!
I really found Diamant's book to be greatly inspiring and full of explainations on what parts are necessary in a jewish ceremony and what parts are customs and why. She really appeals to a large audience because she does not assume you have to be orthodox to understand or take part in anything she discusses. This book has also inspired me to have a Friday night "Sabbath" dinner with close family before our wedding and integrate some rituals I didn't know about previously, like both mothers breaking a plate. (Read the book to find out what it means!)
And since I am having a long engagement, I am going to have to refresh my memory soon because when I read it I just remember saying out loud "Oh, that is so cool! I want that to happen during my ceremony too!"
BUY THIS BOOK! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Amazingly helpful book for the clueless.......2002-12-20
I married a Jewish man this August and this book was a lifesaver! My dear mother-in-law got me a copy and it proved invaluable. Anita Daimant is great at explaining things clearly and simply without condecension. Additionally, she understands that each person's experience within Judaism is different. She provides various translations for wedding blessings and poems which will fit almost everyone's experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially the non-Jew or newly converted, who are having a Jewish wedding.

Hangin out with Cici By Francine Pascal.......2003-11-04
Hangin' Out with CiCi
Francine Pascal's Hangin' Out with CiCi is a must- read. It is a non-stop reader. It has a remarkable setting with memorable characters. This incredible setting takes place around a small town with brick houses and old candy shops and not to mention stores with two dollar shoes. At first she starts out with the today time period and goes back in time when her mother was a kid, and then she has to wonder am I ever going to get home? The main character is Victoria, which she is a teen just like you and I, that is doing everyday things. When Victoria gets in trouble at school and gets threatened to have to go to a private school, her world turns up side-down. While coming home from Pennsylvania Victoria goes back in time to 1944 in her Mother's hometown. She then finds a new best friend named CiCi. Victoria learns a lot threw her friendship with CiCi.
This Book defiantly got me reading for hours. Hangin' Out with CiCi is truly an amazing story. Wouldn't it be neat to go back in time and learn about the family that you thought knew! Then while you were there with a family thinking I think I know them... but how? I am not really even alive? So you better watch out because the ending will just blow your mind! If you read this book it will not be a disappointment. This novel is for teenage girls that are looking for an exciting adventure or mystery that you could read over and over again. If you like this book then you might want to read some over books by Francine Pascal, like My First Love and Other Disasters, and also the great Sweet Valley High serious.
Francine Pascal at her best.......2003-03-24
These are NOT the generic romances that are the Sweet Valley High series.
"Hangin' out with Cici" has been republished, under the title, "My Mother Was Never a Kid". The two subsequent books in the series featuring Vicky, "My First Love and Other Disasters" and "Love and Betrayal and Hold the Mayo" have also been republished. All are available and I highly recommend them to people so they can experience a very different, fun, and refreshing writing style of Francine Pascal.
This is a three-book series that I read years ago. To their benefit, they DO NOT follow the romance boilerplates of the Sweet Valley High series. The main character, Vicky, who is an absolute hoot to be around, travels to a different time, and gets to meet some new people her age. She has a smart mouth that gets her into some trouble and into some interesting situations. By the end of the story, she has gained a deeper understanding and insight into the adults around her.
1 part realism + 1 part fantasy = ONE GREAT READ FOR ANYONE.......2001-06-29
This book is aimed at teens, but I say it's for everyone. (I still have my copy, tucked amid the more "grown-up" fare) Vicky's mom is giving her grief -- and then she gets blamed for something she didn't do! Bummer! Then, she enters this time warp, goes back to the 40s, and makes a friend who turns out to be her mom as a teen!!! EXCELLENT!! By thetime she gets back to her own time, she learns about her mom and about herself! This book is recomened to all mom's with daughters -- and everyone who is or has ever been a daughter. Imaginative, humorous, and moving, this book deserves 6 stars and it's a shame that it's out of print!!
I thought it was one of the best books I have ever read!.......1999-01-29
I thought it was great how Fancine described the relationship between daughter and mother, and also the sisters relationship. I thought that it was very real life. It has the everyday troubles of a teenager, and always getting in trouble at school.
